  1. [ID-4243320] Incorrect cursor movement in RTL text when Harfbuzz text shaping is used.

InDesign version: v20 (both Mac & PC)

In right-to-left languages (Hebrew & Arabic) the cursor movement went crazy:
    - Left key - goes up
    - Right key - jumps to the end of the line...
    We can't work that way

Note: both (23\25 indd) set to 'Visual' in preferences > right-to-left > cursor movement (of course, changing the setting to 'logical' doesn’t solve it)

  3. Tab indent of RTL Numbered List does not line up

See two screenshots attached, both are using the exact same settings, (Default, just changed to Hebrew numbering)
in InDesign 2019 (14.0.3) Everything is nicely aligned, vs in InDesign 2020 (15.0) it's jagged, and I'm not able to align it in any way (Tabs, Indenting, etc.).
I'm using InDesign 2020 תומך עיברית, on Windows 10

  4. Paragraph styles removed when importing docx files while doc files retain styles correctly.

Using the latest InDesign 2022 (17.2.1) for Mac (The Middle Eastern version--the one that shows English and Hebrew), both on an M1 Mac mini and a late 2015 iMac running Big Sur.

Import a docx Microsoft Word file into an InDesign file (tried with blank new document as well as one of our templates) with the import settings set to bring in all styles.

The file is imported but the import has stripped all styles from the document.

Resave the docx file as a doc file.

Import new file into ID, which results in all styles being visible as…

  5. There does not seem to be a way to activate the Japanese Paragraph composer in the English version of InDesign

I am an native English speaker and use InDesign primarily in English. I sometimes have projects in other languages; i actually read a fair bit of Japanese and noticed that the lines were breaking even wtih World-ready paragraph composer turned on. I then learned that InDesign has both Japanese paragraph and single-line composers, whhich appear to be accessible in PREFERENCES under Advanced Type, but this does not seem to do anything I need done with the text.

i was told I must install the Japanese language version of InDesign to apply this feature. It would be wonderful if that…

  6. World-Ready Composer Is messing up the kerning in Latin fonts

I have reported a variation of this—back with CS6—but it seems not to have been fixed. I assume it's a bug, but if someone can enlighten me about what I might be doing wrong and how I can fix this, I'd appreciate it.

I often work on books that include Arabic and Hebrew words and phrases in the middle of English text. They only way to get the Arabic ligatures to form is to use one of the World Ready composers. When I do that, though, the kerning around some English characters often—but not always—is affected. I have tried turning…

  8. [ID-4246352]NIKKUD (accents/diacritics) selection has become invisible

InDesign version: v20 (both Mac & PC)

Hebrew letters can use NIKKUD - vocalization diacritical marks (function like Vowels) under/above the letter.

    • In previous versions (-2023) it was possible to select only the NIKKUD (attached image) of the letter. (in order to specify the position of the NIKKUD using the Diacritic Positioning panel or to change color, etc.)
    • In the current version (2024-2025) the selection is on the entire letter, and there is no visual indication whether the letter or the NIKKUD is selected (attached image).

Note: Sometimes there are two NIKKUD characters and even in such a case in…

  10. Please change one word in the German Indesign

The German Word "Abstände" is used two times in the paragraph style panel but with two completely different meanings.

First use "Einzüge und Abstände" is in English "Indents and Spacing".

Second use "Abstände" is in English "Justification".

Please change the second one to "Blocksatz" or "Blocksatzeinstellungen" so that the German users will not be confused anymore.

Or contact a German speaking InDesign pro user for a better translation.

Just a small change to make a lot of (German speaking) people happy!

  11. English:UK spelling currently not picking up US spellings 'ize', 'izing'

InDesign is not currently detecting US spellings that use 'ize' in text that is set as 'English: UK'. (example 'organize'). We have checked to make sure there are no local overrides, such as paragraph or character styles set to 'English: USA' (there aren't), and that the undetected spelling has not been added to the custom dictionary (they haven't been). Failure to pick up 'ize' spellings is a departure from previous behaviour and is quite problematic for our workflow. Other US English spellings (such as 'behavior') are being detected.

  12. Copying originally English text in InDesign and it's pasting as Chinese characters

Really weird - been trying to copy and paste directly from an indesign file to external documents while sub-editing a page, and noticing it's pasting as a string of Chinese characters.

E.g. see attached screenshot is pasting as:

But only into certain programmes. Pastes in English in google search or directly into a google chat, but pasted into Whatsapp desktop or a fresh email or apple notes app (etc) it pastes as Chinese characters...

For reference, using InDesign 2023, font is Adobe Caslon Pro, language is set to UK English...

  13. A problem about converting right-to-left text to the newest version

    Hello,
I have been using Indesign v18.5 and created a lot of documents for a book in Hebrew and Arabic.
My paragraph styles have the property "Character Direction: Default" which, of course, organized my text as RTL for Hebrew and Arabic, and LTR for English text.
After converting the documents to the newest version (v19.0), some (and only some) of the punctuation marks (such as ".", "!", "?") and even some of the spaces, were placed in a wrong manner: to the right side of the text, instead of being placed to the left of the text as they are…

  14. quote mark position in RTL paragraph when Arabic and English text mixed and line break

    InDesign 20.2 (ME)

In a paragraph where there is text contained within opening and closing quote marks and that text has a mixture of Arabic and English words, if that text happens to be at the end of a line and automatically flows to the next line then the positions of the quote marks reverses and are incorrect. If I force a line beak then it fixes itself, but it leaves me with text in one line that is shorter than it should be.

This problem also appeared a few versions back, can't recall exactly when, a year or more…

  15. hyphenation not working properly in English

first, why can't I use a snipping file here? Neither .jpg or .png will work - your site denies these file types.

My hyphenation is really out of whack. If you look at the first line of text, it's crazy that it's wrapping the 1, for WW1 to the next line. If I add the No Break from the Character panel, it moves "World War" down to the second line.

  17. RTL Text Bugs Despite "Fixed" Notification

    InDesign 20.3.1.073

    Dear Adobe InDesign Development Team,
We appreciate your efforts in addressing the RTL text issues introduced with the HarfBuzz engine in InDesign 19 (2024) and the improvements made through version 20.3.1.073.
However, we must bring to your urgent attention that, contrary to your recent "Fixed" notification, several critical bugs remain unresolved, several critical bugs remain unresolved, impacting right-to-left (RTL) workflows (Hebrew & Arabic).

    Critical Bug:

    • #1: Disappearing Punctuation/Text in PDF Export with Drop Cap and Line Break When a drop cap is applied )in justified RTL text( followed by punctuation and a line break, the punctuation marks…

  18. Wrong font preview for RTL languages

There is a problem with the new fonts preview in version 14.0 of InDesign.
The 'Selected Text' preview is shown backwards (LTR instead of RTL).
This happens in spite of the fact that the text box is marked as a 'Hebrew' one.
I'm using a Mac running OS X 10.13.6 High Sierra.

  20. RTL options dissappeared in Indesign 18.3

Indesign 18.3 - Hebrew support edition.

Steps to reproduce the issues: Choose a text box, and try to set RTL. THERE IS NO RTL button! (Indesign 17.x had RTL and LTR buttons. But after upgrade to Indesign 18.3 - the RTL button dissappeared!)

Expected result: Should have RTL buttons just like Indesign 17.x

    Actual result: Missing RTL buttons.
