1. can't convert PDF files

   Indesign is currently failing to open PDF and Illustrator files. The Covert dialogue pops up and takes a very long time to process before returning a failure message. Error says "some features in the PDF" are to blame, but it's happening with even previously good files and .ai files as well.

   Issue initially presented on latest version (24.1.1); tried reinstalling, then tried uninstalling that and dialing back to version 21.0.2. Same issue every time, even on files I worked on previously with no issue. Have rebooted my system multiple times, no change. Sample PDF attached.

   Windows 11 enterprise x64
   AMD Ryzen 7 7700 8-Core Processor (3.80 GHz)
   RAM 32.0 GB (31.1 GB usable)

2. Color Issue on Appearance Panel

   When trying to change the color on the appearance panel, there is an audible sound on my MacBook, like I can't select it.
   I have an example, a regular rectangle, I tried to change the color under the appearance panel and it makes that sound and it won't let me change the color. Ive deleted and reinstalled inDesign, cleared settings, restarted the computer, and the issue persists. I've also opened different files, and new files for testing it and it still does the same thing. I'm on the lates version 21.4.1, not on a beta of macOS either.

3. Modal dialog boxes appear behind InDesign window on macOS + excessive resource usage

   I am experiencing two recurring problems while using Adobe InDesign on my iMac. The most disruptive is that modal dialog boxes are appearing behind the main InDesign window instead of in front of it.

   Problem 1 – Dialog boxes appearing behind the InDesign workspace

   When InDesign opens a dialog box, the dialog sometimes appears behind the main InDesign document/workspace window.

   Because the dialog is modal, InDesign will not allow me to continue working normally until I respond to it. However, I cannot see the dialog because it is hidden behind the main InDesign window.

   Initially this made it appear as though InDesign had frozen. If I try to quit InDesign, I receive a message telling me that there is an active dialog box, but there is no visible dialog box for me to respond to.

   I have now discovered a way to reproduce/reveal the problem: if I switch to another macOS Desktop/Space and then return to the Desktop/Space where InDesign is running, the hidden dialog box suddenly appears correctly in front of the InDesign workspace. I can then respond to the dialog and continue working.

   This is happening frequently and is significantly disrupting my workflow.

   Expected behaviour

   When InDesign opens a modal dialog box, the dialog should always appear in front of the InDesign workspace so that I can see it and respond to it.

   Actual behaviour

   The modal dialog sometimes appears behind the main InDesign window. InDesign then becomes effectively unusable because it is waiting for a response to a dialog that I cannot see.

   Switching to another macOS Desktop/Space and then returning to InDesign causes the dialog to display correctly in front of the workspace.

   I have found older Adobe UserVoice reports describing similar behaviour. I am submitting this report because the problem is still occurring on current Apple hardware and my current InDesign/macOS installation, so it does not appear to have been fully resolved.

   Problem 2 – Excessive resource usage and computer becoming very hot

   I am also experiencing unusually high system resource usage while working in InDesign.

   My iMac becomes noticeably hot and appears to be working extremely hard while I am using InDesign. At times this has become significant enough that I have stopped working, closed all of my applications and restarted the computer. On some occasions I have shut the computer down completely because of how hot it has become.

   This is occurring during my normal InDesign work and is becoming frequent enough that it is affecting my ability to work reliably.

   I do not know whether the excessive resource usage is related to the hidden modal-dialog problem, but I wanted to report both behaviours because they are occurring on the same system while using InDesign.

   System information

   Computer: Apple iMac, 24-inch (2024)
   Processor: Apple M4
   Memory: 16 GB
   Operating system: macOS Sequoia 15.6.1
   Adobe InDesign version: 2026

   Additional information

   This is not a conventional InDesign crash. InDesign remains open.

   The main problem is that a modal dialog can become hidden behind the InDesign workspace. Because InDesign is waiting for a response to that hidden dialog, the program can appear frozen or unresponsive and cannot be quit normally.

   Switching macOS Desktops/Spaces and then returning to InDesign causes the dialog to appear correctly in front of the workspace.

   Because this is happening repeatedly, rather than as an isolated incident, I would appreciate Adobe investigating whether this is a known issue with InDesign's window/dialog handling on macOS, particularly on Apple Silicon Macs, and whether the unusually high resource usage I am experiencing could be related.

4. Everything on my screen goes invisible

   When working in a document, everything on my screen goes invisible. It's all still there because I can select it and get the selection boxes but can't see it. This happens sporadically and there does not seem to be a certain thing that triggers it.

5. Data Merge with CSV file not working

   Using Indesign 21.5 trying to use Data Merge with a CSV file keeps giving me error that says "There is some error while parsing. Please check your data file."
   The exact same CSV file using data merge works in Indesign version 20.5.4 with no issue - all links/images import.

6. More robust solution for importing PDF comments

   The current solution doesn't work on the long run.
   InDesign crashes suddenly very often when trying to import PDF comments, with no warning whatsoever.

   Being caused by small changes in ID files, metadatas, auto-install updates of indesign etc. these PDF comments become impossible to use within InDesign after a couple of weeks or more.
   With 300+ comments, it takes ages to apply the modifications. Importing PDF comments is so time saving that not being able to use it is frustrating.

   • It would be at least great to accept the import and synchronized across the pages, if not on the text itself
   • It would be great to be able to import (as a safe workaround maybe) a .fdf comment file. Why the need to export/ import the pdf again?

   So far, as a workaround, I have to use a custom Apple script (via Shortcuts) that synchronize the active page from Acrobat to InDesign. It would be so much simpler to have this function natively.

7. Slow even with RTX 4070.

   I've used Adobe products for about 20 years, with all sorts of computers, good and bad, but it has always been a pleasant experience. But since 2-3 years ago, everything changed. I now really struggle on any app really even on top specs computers, in, photoshop, indesign, lightroom but especially Indesign. I have a Dell XPS with RTX 3070 desktop AND XPS RTX 4070 laptop. Both really amazing and new computers. Any other non-adobe software works flawlessly. Tried all the recommendation from Adobe, talked to technicians, still really laggy and worse with each updates...Unsubscribed after many thousand of dollars worth of adobe subscriptions...

8. Bug de l'outil de révision

   Bonjour à tous.
   Depuis ce jour, je rencontre un problème très pénible avec l'outil de révision. Un décalage s'est produit entre les marques de révisions qui avaient été créées et les pages auxquelles elles étaient attachées... De plus tout les révisions avec du texte sélectionné ou barré sont parties se logées en haut à gauche de la planche concernées... Un truc de fou qui me met bien dans l'embarras pour faire le gros travail de correction que j'ai à faire....

11. multiple files not placing correctly when placing multi-page pdf into frames

    I found this error posted as a bug; since that post was from 2022 with a version of inDesign well past I'm making a new post.
    Adobe InDesign version 21.4.1
    I need to impose several 2 sided cards for printing.
    File>Place... Select multiple pdfs - Open
    Place PDF - Choose All under Pages - Repeat for all placed items (doing 4 in my example)

    OK so in recording for this post I figured out that if I place on to blank pages, this didn't happen -- all pages of all 4 pdfs placed for 8 total. If I do my usual habit of placing the crop marks and a frame on a parent page, then place my multiple pdfs into frames on the main pages so I can step and repeat them all, it SKIPS EVERY OTHER PDF. :( Placing into an empty frame ensured correct placement and saved me a step.

    The unplaced pdf files show up in the links menu but are otherwise in an inaccessible limbo.

    Problem description

    InDesign repeatedly enters a save-locked state during ordinary editing on the macOS 27 beta.

    After several successful saves, an open and modified .indd document suddenly can no longer be saved. The document tab continues to display the modified-document asterisk, but the following commands are disabled:

    • Save
    • Save As
    • Save a Copy
    • Revert

    Closing the document is also unavailable or unsuccessful.

    When quitting InDesign, the application reports:

    InDesign cannot quit because one or more tasks are running in the background.

    The Window → Utilities → Background Tasks panel is empty. There is no task to cancel, no progress indicator, and no visible alert explaining the failure.

    Waiting does not restore saving. InDesign must eventually be force-quit, creating a substantial risk of losing work.

    Expected behavior

    A modified document should permit Save or Save As.

    If a save or other background task is active, InDesign should:

    • Show it in the Background Tasks panel.
    • Complete it or return an actionable error.
    • Re-enable document commands after completion or failure.
    • Allow the user to cancel the operation where supported.
    • Never remain permanently locked with unsaved changes and no recovery path.

    Actual behavior

    • InDesign recognizes the document as modified.
    • All native save commands are disabled.
    • The Background Tasks panel is empty.
    • The application incorrectly claims that a background task prevents quitting.
    • No recovery occurs.
    • Force Quit is required.
    • The only consistently successful rescue method has been IDML export followed by reopening and resaving the document.
    • The failure later recurs.

    Steps to reproduce

    1. Run InDesign on macOS 27 beta.
    2. Open an ordinary .indd file.
    3. Make text or layout changes.
    4. Save normally.
    5. Continue editing and saving several times.
    6. At an unpredictable point, make another edit.
    7. Observe the asterisk in the document tab.
    8. Open the File menu.
    9. Observe that Save, Save As and Save a Copy are disabled.
    10. Attempt to quit InDesign.
    11. Observe the warning that background tasks are running.
    12. Open the Background Tasks panel.
    13. Observe that it is empty.

    Frequency and scope

    The failure occurs frequently and has been observed:

    • In multiple documents.
    • In multiple InDesign versions.
    • With documents belonging to an .indb Book.
    • With individual documents opened without relying on a cloud or network path.
    • After IDML reconstruction.
    • In relatively lightweight files.
    • Without third-party plug-ins.

    It may affect more than one open document during the same InDesign session.

    Troubleshooting performed

    The following have already been tested without resolving the issue:

    • Deleted/reset InDesign preferences.
    • Moved files to the local Desktop/internal SSD.
    • Disabled Preflight.
    • Confirmed the Background Tasks panel is empty.
    • Exported files to IDML and recreated .indd files.
    • Tested multiple InDesign files.
    • Tested multiple InDesign versions.
    • Confirmed no third-party plug-ins are installed.
    • Confirmed the documents are relatively light.
    • Tested outside cloud/network storage.

    Book-file context

    Several affected documents are components of an InDesign Book (.indb). However:

    • The component files are independent native .indd files.
    • The issue affects multiple files.
    • Rebuilding the component documents through IDML does not permanently resolve it.
    • The same behavior appears in more than one InDesign release.

    The .indb context may be a trigger, particularly if numbering, synchronization or other book operations invoke an internal asynchronous task, but the visible Background Tasks queue remains empty.

    Technical interpretation

    The UI state suggests that InDesign internally believes a save or asynchronous operation is still active:

    • The document dirty flag remains set.
    • Save commands are disabled.
    • Quit is blocked.
    • No task is exposed in Background Tasks.
    • No error is returned to the user.

    This could involve:

    • A leaked or unresolved background-task state.
    • A save-operation flag that is never cleared.
    • File coordination or atomic-save behavior under the macOS beta.
    • An AppKit menu-validation incompatibility.
    • A document/book synchronization callback that never completes.
    • A macOS 27 compatibility regression affecting several InDesign releases.

    Because it reproduces across InDesign versions on the same beta operating system, macOS is likely an important factor. Nevertheless, InDesign should fail safely and provide a recoverable error rather than disabling every save mechanism.

    Production impact

    This is a critical data-integrity problem.

    Users may unknowingly continue working while the application is already incapable of saving. There is no warning when the failure state begins. The problem becomes visible only when the user attempts a save or quit.

    Force Quit can discard all work since the last successful save. IDML export is only an emergency workaround and is not an acceptable replacement for reliable .indd saving.

14. Indesign freezes and Crashes when attempting to delete a row

    I am having an issue where InDesign is freezing and crashing after I try to delete a table row.

    I am unable to attach a DMP file even though your documentation asks for it.

    Only thing that seems to mitigate it is copying the INDD file, but the issue comes back after I work for a while.

15. InDesign illogically selects guideline instead of a line drawn on it

    We use the line tool to draw change bars along a guideline in page margins. I just needed to copy one, but found that InDesign was selecting the guideline instead of the line drawn on it, which I was clicking on.

    Nothing was locked, and nothing was on separate layers, etc.

    Please fix this defect.

16. Error 18 - Publish Online Failure

    When publishing online, InDesign (latest version) is consistently giving error 18 and failing to publish. I've viewed the help center recommendations and have logged out and back in of the Creative Cloud and have changed networks with no success.

    In addition, viewing pages through EPUB Interactivity Preview is met with a blank pages.

    The ability to publish online is necessary to complete work tasks - a quick resolution would be very appreciated. Thank you.

17. Crash InDesign

    Hello,
    I have MacBook Pro M5 Pro with 48GB RAM, when I use InDesign, every time crash changing the icone of mouse, exampel import a photo che mouse is change and if I'm cancelling and going back don't work, Finally I quit InDesign, don't close, is blocked. I have force of close app and apper a error.

18. Completely incorrect alt text for white logotypes on a dark colored background

    I got an Illustrator file with a white colored logotype. I place this in InDesign on a dark background.

    Now I use Adobes in-build alt text generator, and the text is absolutely dumb.

    In my example (I tried it with several logotypes):

    "Zwei Erwachsene sitzen an einem Tisch und spielen ein Brettspiel mit bunten Spielfiguren in einem gemütlichen Raum mit Pflanzen und Bücherregalen."

    which means in English
    "Two adults are sitting at a table playing a board game with colorful game pieces in a cozy room with plants and bookshelves."

    No issues if the logotype is black on a white background.

    Black on white = correct alt-text
    White on color = totally wrong alt-text

    German version (but other users have the same behavior within the English version)

19. Exporting interactive PDF from Adobe Cloud creates button failure

    Windows 11, version 24H2

    We decided to move all our files from a SharePoint environment to Adobe's Creative Cloud storage. To align with accessibility regulation in many states, we've created buttons that navigate within the document to easily jump back and forth the pages. As a trial, we uploaded one file to run our process.

    Upon exporting, a security warning pops up stating that the document is trying to access a link (which is a link to the document itself). Then, an information box has popped up stating that "the plug-in required by this 'GoToR' action is not available." Screenshots attached.

    The action is mistakenly throwing a "GoToR" action when a "GoTo" should be the correct action as how the button has been programmed for internal navigation only.

    We have recreated this in other places and do not have this issue.

20. Invisible characters left behind after applying imported PDF comments

    Description:
    When importing PDF comments into InDesign and applying text corrections, unwanted invisible characters are frequently left behind in the text flow.

    These hidden characters cause significant disruptions in our typesetting and scripting workflows:

    Find/Change Failures: Because these characters are invisible, they break text strings without the user noticing. This causes standard text and GREP Find/Change queries to fail and return no results for seemingly identical text.

    Sorting Script Errors: When using scripts to sort paragraphs alphabetically, if one of these invisible characters ends up at the beginning of a paragraph, the sorting algorithm misinterprets it. This usually results in the affected paragraph being incorrectly pushed to the very end of the sorted list.

    Expected Behavior:
    Applying imported PDF text edits should only insert the intended characters and should not leave behind invisible artifacts that break text processing.
