1. [ID-4219732]Slow performance

   Lately InDesign is nearly unusable. Almost every action from selecting objects, resizing objects, or moving objects comes with a really slow reaction time. Even when clicking between panels in the toolbar there is a delay of about half a second.

   I have tried ruling out potential issues like updating graphic drivers and embedding all resources into the document. Nothing works it seems like the application is just unstable. Please advise, I love to work with indesign but this is overall a very bad user experience.

   Customer comments

   • InDesign lags when rearranging text boxes, adding image frames, adjusting frames that already exist
   • Selecting an item (e.g. text frame) in small and really uncomplicated documents has slight but very noticeable delays/lags, almost as if the click hangs and makes the item drag a little instead of just being selected.
   • Performance degradation is observed if more than 1 document is opened
   • Creating packages (File > Package) takes so much time – especially collecting image files into the Links-folder. This behavior is generally observed with Illustrator files.
   • Performance degradation is observed while working on indd document and not with the IDML of the indd document.
   • Lag observed for almost every action from selecting objects, resizing objects, or moving objects

   Troubleshooting steps tried to resolve issues

   • Disable 3rd party plugins - One of the customer has tried with Suitcase Fusion but there was no improvement in the performance.

   Workarounds

   • Change the name of the image folder to disable the dynamic links to picture.
   • Exporting the document to IDML and working on it. Once the document is saved, the performance degradation is observed.
   • Disabling network and internet helps in improving the performance.

   Next Steps 

   • Please provide the number of links in the document when you start facing performance issues
   • Does turning off Links panel help improve performance?
   • Where do you link image from Local/Network/Shared Drives(One drive, Drop box etc)
   • All the machines mentioned in the UserVoice thread are intel based. Performance for Apple Silicon/M1/M2 machines is way better than Intel machines. Is there any user who is using Apple Silicon/M1/M2 and facing performance issues.

2. drop shadow issues

   Hello!

   I'm trying to do an A3 poster with two layers:
   Layer one: A rectangle a white-black gradient fill and some line option and drop shadow applied.
   Layer two: Some text frames with white text with black strokes.

   When I add drop shadow to the text it looks just as intended on screen.

   But when I print it out on a big, expensive Samsung X7600 Series printer, I get a kind of gradient color in bottom of text frames. As if I had applied some color to the frame.
   (Please see the attached file "indd cc print screen".)

   I have made sure to just apply shadow to text in the effects dialogue.

   It does'nt seem to matter what changes I do.
   The printed result is the same as in the attached file "printed scanned".

   Same error when I export to pdf.

   Why, but why!?

   What am I doing wrong?

   I'm using Indesign CC, ver. 13.0.1 x64 on PC. Swedish.

3. pannels

   sometimes panels like Links, Layer are not opening by command or clicking in Window menu, then I got a solution for this issue i.e. change the workspace to another and comeback to your old one, it will help you. But it'll be an issue for everyone else. So please solve this issue in next update.

4. Drawing glitches when placing transparent PNGs in RGB documents on monitors with specific color profiles

   Applicable to Any Version of Mac/InDesign

   When using an EIZO color management monitor with a profile created by ColorNavigator where "Reflect Black Level in Tone Curve" is enabled, placing a transparent PNG into an RGB document causes severe drawing issues, rendering the document almost unusable.

   This issue occurs only when GPU rendering is enabled and does not happen with CPU rendering. Additionally, it does not occur when placing a transparent PNG in a CMYK document.

   Even under the same conditions, this issue does not occur in Photoshop or Illustrator, only in InDesign.

   While creating a profile with "Reflect Black Level in Tone Curve" turned off can avoid this issue, this setting is crucial for accurate proofing in Photoshop, so turning it off is not a viable solution.

   This appears to be a problem with GPU-based rendering in InDesign. I hope this can be fixed.

5. Data Merge function "Remove Blank Lines for Empty Fields" deletes the wrong paragraph

   Open Data-Merge Panel
   Generate a merged document with click on the button
   Uncheck "Remove Blank Lines for Empty Fields" in Content Placement Options
   Press [OK]
   Repeat Step 3 this time Check "Remove Blank Lines for Empty Fields" in Content Placement Options

   Put the documents side by side
   Activate "Show Style override" in the paragraph panel
   Jump to page 2
   On the left side (Merged Document, Blank line intact) you can see the 2 markers followed by a paragraph symbol
   On the right side (Merged Document, Blank line removed) you can see that the 2 markers with paragraph symbol moved 1 line up behind the 7 and the other paragraph symbol is deleted
   Everything is o.k. because the paragraph style (07padresse) of the line "Mobile" and the deleted "Blank line" are the same

   On the left side you can see the 2 markers followed by a paragraph symbol
   On the right side (Merged Document, Blank line removed) you can see that the 2 markers with paragraph symbol moved 1 line up and the other paragraph symbol (blue highlighted on the left side) is deleted BUT this time the paragraph style of these 2 paragraph are NOT the same! The result is a bigger gap between the two sentence "Frau Marie…" and Tel: 012…" on the right then it should be as you can see on the left

   Expected result
   The Blank line (2 markers and paragraph symbol) should be deleted/removed

   Actual result
   Instead of the Blank line (2 markers and paragraph symbol) the paragraph symbol before that (blue highlighted on the left side) is removed AND the remaining paragraph also picks up the paragraph style from the "Blank line" (if there were text in my example you could see that as well)

   Workaround
   You can generate a merged document with Blank lines and delete/remove them with Find/Change
   Find > (markers) + paragraph symbol = <FEFF><FEFF>^p
   Change > to nothing
   This way everything stays intact!

6. Error(#14, #18, #22, #23, #33, #39, #40) while trying to publish your documents using Publish Online in InDesign

   Hi,
   I work on InDesign 16.1 on macOS Big Sur 11.2.1.
   Since April 2nd, error #18 PublishOnline has been occurring when I try to publish online any of my documents. I tried on several computers and it still failed at 98%. I also tried with a blank file and the problem was there too. My files work well when opened with another account.
   Please find attached a screenshot of the error as well as a test file. I tried every solution on the help center and it didn't work. Could the issue come from my account? What solutions can you suggest? It's my working tool and I really need a quick solution. Many thanks in advance for your help.

7. GPU Accelerated Preview Issues on Windows 11

   InDesign 2025 & 2026 (v21.0 & v20.5.1)
   PC running Windows 11 Pro
   CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D 16-Core Processor
   GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
   Display: ASUS ProArt PA279CRV @3840x2160
   RAM: 64GB DDR5 @6000 MT/s
   Storage: Samsung SSD 9100 PRO 2TB

   There are mainly 3 issues, that have not improved with the new version:

   1. Animated zoom is broken; it's laggy, and does not zoom in on the actual point of focus where you click with your cursor, making it worse and slower to use than CPU Preview's regular zoom, and in many cases it literally zooms you in on a point outside the artboard and out of your page. The same issue was described in an older bug and was marked as "fixed" when in fact it wasn't.    2. Panning/using the hand tool while zoomed in on a page containing pictures, with "Display Performance" set to "High Quality Display", with GPU Accelerated Preview is slow and causes massive stutters compared to CPU Preview, its stuttering is very irregular it ends up causing eye strain and headaches after long use. The issue is not present with "Typical Display", but at that stage the performance is the same as CPU Preview so makes you wonder what's the point.

   3. When working on a text layout and adjusting the flow of the text, when the end of the text moves from the last page to the page before, GPU Preview sometimes keeps a ghost of the last page containing text, even though the page before is now showing the updated content. CPU Preview shows it correctly. It can only be fixed by entering some new text into the original "last" page forcing it to refresh the preview.

   The first two issues are constant and are the most critical, as they make InDesign quite frustrating to use, and make GPU acceleration completely useless.

   I couldn't add a video of #3 as the content of the pages was confidential, but will try to take a video when it happens again on a different document.

8. Multi-state objects and animated elements not working on State 1

   InDesign CC 2019 14.0:

   I have a 4 state multi-state object. Each state has a full-screen image with a text title and description which animates in (Fly-in from top) for each state upon load. Left/Right buttons control the interactivity.

   However, when I add an animation to the text title/description in State-1 it causes the full-screen image to not load and the test/description text doesn't appear either. (Tested in Indesign in the EPUB Interactivity Preview panel and on iPad/iBooks)

   When testing it in the EPUB Interactivity Preview panel and I go to State-2 using the buttons and then return to State-1 the image loads and the text animates as planned.

   Why won't the animation show when State-1 first loads? I wanted to attach the InDesign test file to show the issue but it won't allow.

9. Text formatting can break backlinking endnote texts to endnote refs when exported to PDF (Print)

   Hi together,
   to explain the issue:

   Sometimes backling from endnote text to endnote reference number will not work.

   To make it work at all I found the following minimum requirements for PDF export:

   PDF Export (Print)

   Compatibility: Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4)

   [x] Create Tagged PDF

   [x] Hyperlinks enabled

   Even with that sometimes only linking from the endnote reference number to the endnote text will work, but not backlinking from the endnote number in the endnote text to the reference in the main text.

   What I found:

   If you want linking back from the endnote number at the start of the endnote text you have to be careful with formatting of that endnote number which in fact is a special character.

   WHAT WORKED:

   The endnote is using a paragraph style without any specialities. No overrides, no character styles applied:

   RESULT: No issue with linking back and forth between endnote reference number and number in the endnote text.

   Now I had the idea to format that special character, the number that starts the endnote text with a character style.

   RESULT: Linking from the endnote reference number to the endnote text worked. BACKLINKING DID NOT WORK.

   WHAT BROKE THE BACKLINKING:

   [1] Character style applied through a GREP Style

   [2] Character style applied directly as formatting

   [3] Properties directly applied as overrides without a character style

   WHAT FINALLY WORKED:

   [4] Character style applied as nested style through the applied paragraph style:

   Character style to 1 tabulator character

   I did not test on to eliminate other factors.

   Maybe one of the used properties are the real culprit?

   What I defined in that character style and also tried to apply as character override was:

   Character width and height: 70%

   Baseline Offset: 2 Pt

   Fill Color: "C=100 M=0 Y=0 K=0"

10. Disable cross-references

    InDesign is far too slow when you have too many cross-references in a single document - and by too many I mean not many at all (I have 30 in one of mine, and the document grinds to a halt all the time). Whilst opening every single document that is references helps a bit, this is far from a satisfactory solution. At a minimum it should be possible to disable cross-references whenever you want, to avoid the performance hit. It would also be a good idea to fix the cross-references issue completely, so that cross-references are not constantly being updated all the time.

11. Crash when exporting

    Every time I try to export my document to a PDF InDesign 12.1 crashes. I've quit and restarted the software, and restarted my computer. I have no pending updates. I'm not sure why the program crashes every time I try to export. I've tried to go around the issue by packaging the file, exporting directly to PDF, or getting a PDF from a "print" operation, but nothing seems to work. It crashes every time.

    To identify the cause of this issue, we had started our investigation with the aim to resolve it. You might have also received email from us seeking more details to help in our investigation.

    We’ve concluded our investigation and came up with the finding : Either the issue is fixed in the latest release of InDesign or the issue was intermittent in nature at the time of its reporting and is not reproducible now.

    We recommend you to upgrade to the latest version of InDesign 2020 (if you’re not already on it). It contains a lot of stability fixes.

    If you still face this issue even after updating to the latest version of InDesign, please submit the crash report to us. (The guidelines to submit crash are available at (https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/submit-crash-reports.html)

12. Double hyphen in words that already contain hyphen (minus)

    Since a few weeks (we think since the InDesign 16.1 x64 update), we see a major problem in a lot of our books:
    Words that already contain a hyphen (minus sign: -), and that are hyphenated automatically by InDesign, get a double hyphen!
    Normally, when hyphenated words are at the end of the line, the 'hard typed' hyphen gets replaced by the automatic hyphen (with the blue ~ added above it), but now the automated hyphen is added, so we get two consecutive hyphens (--). Sometimes on the same line, sometimes one on the next (see example screenshot).

    This is a serious and big problem, experienced by everyone in our team (10 people), on multiple different projects (using templates we use for years already).

    It causes a major liability issue towards our customers, when the books are printed this way! Please fix this.

    We are all on Windows 10 Pro and have the latest version installed (InDesign 16.1 x64)

13. OpenType features bug, missing glyphs on PDF export and convert to outlines

    I've run into a bug when converting text to outlines, and PDF export, relating to OpenType Features.

    I have a font, Chartwell, that has worked perfectly in InDesign for 13+ years. I recently received this bug report from a customer, but am able to recreate it on my end.

    In InDesign’s UI, everything still seems to work correctly. However, when exporting a PDF or converting the text to outlines, some glyphs disappear completely. (See image)

    The font uses complex Discretionary Ligatures to pull off substituting pie chart shapes. The issue doesn't appear for all discretionary ligatures, but something about this specific feature code is triggering something in InDesign? I’ve done some debugging, but can’t find the exact thing that is triggering it, although it may be related to changing text colors breaking context in a substitution.

    I believe the issue in InDesign, since this hasn’t been an issue in the past, doesn’t show up in Illustrator, and only happens on PDF export and creating outlines. I also believe I’m following the OpenType Feature spec correctly. (See second image for a simplified example of the feature code)

    I've created a simplified example InDesign file and OTF that shows the issue. I’m happy to send this over or talk directly to engineers, or help debug this further. Thanks

14. Footnote marker is replaced with an unknown character if preceded by a character with a specific Unicode pattern

    Footnote marker is replaced with an unknown character if preceded by a character with a specific Unicode pattern. Unicode pattern is U+##1a. Here are some of those characters:

    U+011a
    U+021a
    U+031a
    U+041a
    U+051a
    U+061a
    U+071a
    U+081a

    You could try the attached test file for placement in to an InDesign document. Unicode of the character following the footnote marker is : U+011a

    This happen when file format of the file is either RTF or DOC. Its not a issue with DOCX.

16. Find/Change saved queries lose numeric precision for indent values

    Version:
    Adobe InDesign 21.0.2
    macOS 26.2
    Issue also observed in much earlier versions (since CS5.5).
    Steps to reproduce:
    Create a document with paragraph units set to millimeters.
    Create a paragraph with a left indent of exactly 5 mm.
    Open Find/Change.
    In Find Text, set Left Indent to 5 mm by typing it manually.
    Run Find – the paragraph is found.
    Save this Find/Change query.
    Reload the saved query.
    Run Find again.
    Expected result:
    The saved query should find the same paragraphs as when the value is entered manually.
    Actual result:
    After reloading the saved query, the paragraph is not found.
    Additional details:
    Via the scripting API the difference can be observed.
    Manual entry via UI:
    app.findTextPreferences.leftIndent = 14.1732283464567
    After reloading saved query:
    app.findTextPreferences.leftIndent = 14.17322834
    The reduced numeric precision causes the query to fail.
    This appears to be a precision loss when persisting Find/Change query settings.
    The issue affects both UI and scripting workflows.
    Using paragraph or character styles does not prevent this issue, as it is related to how numeric values are stored and restored in saved queries.

    Adobe InDesign 21.0.2
    macOS 26.2

17. Alt key modifier keeps toolbar active after use when zooming in using scroll wheel

    Not sure when this started happening, I only know that it's started irritating the heck out of me quite recently. I'm on Win 10 using InDesign 14.0.2

    Whenever I alt+scroll using the mouse wheel to zoom in/out, InDesign switches focus to the toolbar so that the next keyboard press will enact the menu.

    It becomes an issue when for example zooming into an active text box, if you need to type F, E, L, T, O, A, V, W, or H, after using alt+scroll you end up bringing up the View menu as soon as you hit the V key.

    Another sequence could be, select rectangle tool, draw shape, zoom into check alignment (alt+scroll), tap V to switch back to selection tool to adjust size. DOH! there's that view menu again!

    Super frustrating guys!

    Hi,
    As per our understanding the issue is as follows:
    Launch InDesign.
    1. Press alt+scroll using the mouse wheel to zoom in/out.
    2. InDesign switches focus to the menu-bar so that the next keyboard press will enact the menu shortcut.
    3. Type F, E, L, or T after using alt+scroll

    Result:
    Menu entry is opened from the control strip (example View menu as soon as you hit the V key).

    Expected:
    Key press should select the suitable tool denoted by that key

    This has been the behavior since quite long and does not look like a break in behavior.
    Please can you confirm?

18. version 17.0 while launching shows blank black screen

    Screen gets stuck on black screen and no option comes up.

    InDesign version 16.0 works fine.
    Tried reinstalling the app but shows same issue.

19. Pages panel doesn't show scroll wheel

    The scroll wheel on the pages panel is not showing up and my pages are all off to the right side. Restarting indesign does not fix this issue and restarting the computer also does not fix this issue.

20. spinning beach ball when clicking into text box

    When clicking on a text box to edit text or move box, spinning beach ball delays response by 5 seconds to over a minute. Happens with text tool or select tools. Only way to solve this issue is to work offline. My internet is fine. I use many other apps besides indd and do not have delay issues. Never had a problem prior to the integration of Typekit in most recent versions. MacOS 10.14.3.
    Attached are some screen grabs showing recent freezes. Spinning beach ball is not visible, but that's what I am seeing. Thank you for your attention.
