1. Split and even out footnotes in a two column layout

   We work on academic books, and academics love footnotes. When working with a two-column layout, the footnotes of each column appear at the bottom of that column. So far so good. But when there are a lot of footnotes things get messy, one column can be 50% filled with footnotes and the column next to it can have only 1-2 lines of footnotes (or even none). This doesn't look particularly nice.

   We are wondering if there is a way to even them out?

   I know it is possible to set the footnotes in one-column, but that doesn't look good. Would it however be possible to sever the link between the footnotes and the columns in such a way that the footnotes of one text frame are evened out over two columns. This would mean that if in the first column there are 15 footnotes and in the second column there are 5, they are middled in such a way that on the bottom of each column you have 10 footnotes. This would mean that not all footnotes would appear below the column in which they are invoked (since they can also be send to the other column of the same textframe) but they do appear on the same page. This will bother no-one and it will look a lot better.

2. Floating Paragraph Rules Panel

   A floating/dockable paragraph rules panel would be helpful when having to change a file with multiple paragraph rules applied manually and not in a style. As it is now I have to select each instance and open the dialog box and change the rule settings. Also, show both rule above and below at the same time in the dialog box! Thanks!

3. Add support for language based typographic rules

   Each language has its own set of traditional rules related to hyphens, dashes, quotation marks, punctuation, hyphenation, spaces etc. Most of the rules are pretty simple and it is very easy to apply them using a list of search-replace sequences.

   To significantly improve the quality of typesetting, Adobe should provide users a tool to clean up texts (remove additional spaces for instance) and create output matching the style guides and orthographic rules.

   The rules should be defined for each language and/or region. There are different quotation marks in German used in Germany or in Switzerland; in French used in France or in Québec province; in Spanish used in Spain or on Latin America; in English used in UK or in US.

   This is a list of before and after examples based on US typographic rules:
   don`t > don’t (use of correct typographic apostrophe U+2019)
   me – or him > me—or him (use of em-dash without spaces or with thin spaces)
   Go. Go now. > Go. Go now. (remove extra spaces)
   "Hello!" > “Hello!” (use correct quotation marks)
   Dr. Newton > Dr. Newton (add nonbreaking space after academic titles)
   1974-2001 > 1974–2001 (covert hyphen into en-dash in ranges)
   20cm2 > 20 cm² (add nonbreaking space before units, use proper superior numbers)
   etc. etc. etc.
   My own list contains around 100 corrections.

   There are several existing solution for CMS based websites (typogrify, WP-Typography). There is a stand-alone tool Typopo.org https://app.typopo.org/. So there is a good fundament for InDesign as well.

   I think users in 21th century deserve a tool to improve the typographic quality of the texts in one click.

5. Allow alternating row fills AND column fills in table styles

   Currently, there is no automatic way to have a table with alternating row fills AND alternating column fills; the table settings will only allow you to set one or the other, and you must manually change the colors of the rows (if you set columns to alternate in the style) or columns (if you set rows to alternate in the style) from there.

   It would be nice if we could set BOTH columns and rows to have alternate fills. For example:

   You have a table with five columns, ten rows. You tell every other column to be 100% Magenta. You then set every other row to alternate as well between 100% tint and 50% tint, using the column color by default.

   Now you have a table where every other column is magenta, and the rows alternate between 100% magenta and 50% magenta.

6. Quick change of tables column width and row height

   Please give us the ability to set column width and row height of a table in one step.

   Today I only can change one table column after the other if I want different column width. The same is true for table rows if I want different row height as well.

   With the script (AutoColumn) from Gerald Singelmann it’s possible to change at least all column width in one step. I didn’t found a script for row height till today.

   I attached a video (AutoColumn.mov.zip) where I demo the script and perhaps this explains it a little bit better.

   This script saved me tons of hours of manual work.

   It would be very helpful and time saving to have such a concept for tables in InDesign as a native feature!

8. "Split Column" within a table cell

   I'd like to be able to use the "Split Column" feature within a table cell. I can do a work around sometimes by creating an extra column and making the middle line invisible, but when I've got three columns above one merged cell, I can't get things centered.

9. Control paragraph rules when same styles

   I love being able to control space above/below in Paragraph for consecutive application of the same Paragraph Style.

   I would love to similarly apply a rule above only to the first paragraph in a sequence or a rule below only on the last paragraph in a sequence, with an interface on the Paragraph Rules pane of the Paragraph Style definition similar to the "Space between paragraphs using same style" field in the Indents and Spacing pane.

   This will greatly simplify and enhance my options in an automated XML workflow with multi-paragraph fields in a newspaper production setting.

10. Disable paragraph border end rule across columns in InDesign

    We have option to merge paragraph border for set of paragraphs in InDesign. This results in enabling top and bottom rule for 1st and last consecutive paragraphs only.

    In this case, when a paragraph breaks into next column, then bottom rule will not enable for 1st column(screenshot 1). But if whole paragraph goes into next column, the bottom rule enables for 1st column (Screenshot 2).

    Expectation: But our client has requested to disable the bottom rule in 1st column regardless of how the paragraph breaks.

11. Paragraph Rules in Find/Change and a new Panel?

    Please add Paragraph Rules to the Find Change dialog box. I often need to change rule thickness or color to paragraph rules that are not in a paragraph or character style. Manually changing each selection takes quite a bit of time and should be automated.

    A floating/dockable paragraph rules panel would be helpful when having to change a file with multiple paragraph rules applied manually and not in a style. As it is now I have to select each instance and open the dialog box and change the rule settings.

    Also, please show both rule above and below at the same time in the dialog box when you access it from the menu!

13. Auto resize table when adding/removing column

    Toggle an option so that when adding or removing a column in a table the column widths are restored to the total width. Now when adding or removing a column i have to manualy resize the columns until i can use 'Distribute Columns Evenly' and fill up the entire textbox again.

    It also would be useful to just click 'auto resize' to equaly fill up the textbox by resizing the table.

14. Automatic tables by adding 'Column Space'

    This would be a major improvement of tables in InDesign that would be the envy of any other program and I think it is possible for InDesign to do it.
    This feature would automatically make a table go to its text box width with even spacing between each column of text.:
    This is how it would be done with a new feature called something like 'Column Space':

    (1) You would make sure the table is within a text box to the width you want the table to go to.
    (2) You would then adjust the columns of text within the table to the widths you want them (as you normally would) but without using any cell indents to the left or right of each text column. (So the text column is exactly to the width of the longest line you have decided on in each column.)
    (3) Between each column of text you would add this new feature column, which I've called 'Column Space'*, and this would put even spacing between each text column and this would space the table out to the text box width.

    *This 'Column Space' would act like a word space in justified text, i.e. by adding a Column Space between each column of the table these special columns would behave like a word space – the columns of text would be spaced out evenly to the text box width (just as words are in justified text).

    This would resolve the fiddly, trial and error issue of having to adjust table column widths to make the table go to the width you want it. This would automatically sort out the spacing between table columns automatically and accurately.

    If, like me, you are working on a book with that might have 75 large tables within it, this would be a huge time saver.

    This would be a major improvement of tables in InDesign that would be the envy of any other program and I think it is possible for InDesign to do it.

15. Rules for master page

    It would be great to have rules for master page. For example if I have a template for a product data sheet with a master pager for the first page, a master page for content and a master page for the last page it would be great for InDesign to automatically apply the desired master page to the proper pages. With this option the template would be easier and faster to use

16. no vertical justification on last column

    Implement a setting which will prevent the last column being justified vertically. Currently you have to add a separate text box that is set to align top to prevent this

18. Support headlines in separate column (sideheads)

    It's a pretty common layout to have headline paragraphs in a separate column and their corresponding body paragraphs to the right. (See attached images for examples.) This layout is currently only supported by creating tables, but this isn't semantically correct for the content.

    It would be great if InDesign supported assigning paragraph styles to specific columns, e.g. H1 spans columns 1-3, H2 is column 1, body copy spans columns 2-3.
