Functionality to apply kerning before the first letter in a line
Feature Description: This feature should work like in Illustrator or Photoshop (even After Effects can do it). Please see attached screen capture.
How it should work:
1. Insert the cursor before the first character in a line
2. Use the kerning in the character panel or with the shortcuts (ALT + arrow keys)
3. kerning should be applied
Why: This would be a productivity enhancement and make it much easier to optically align the first letter in a line manually without having to use the Optical Margin alignment that only works for a whole story.

Or even better, have InDesign do this automatically. Like Optical Alignment but not for the entire frame, just the first letter.

There's a simple work-around for this: insert a discretionary break character before the first letter of the paragraph, then, with the cursor between the discr break and the first letter, apply kerning.

In addition to optical margin alignment, this would be useful if you want to kern around drop caps! Bringing in the first line of a paragraph with a drop cap "A", for instance, or moving out the second line to accommodate the long swash of a "Q."

This seems like a no brainer given that the feature already exists in other Adobe software. Having to put a space before a line of text (and potentially an unnecessary soft return) that can be negatively kerned into just adds mess to the document and potential for error if the copy is reformatted at a later date.

Yes, please – that would be a huge improvement. In this context, I’d like to bring a long hold wish of mine back into memory: a kerning editor, which honors left and right text frame border, so I can define my own set of optical margin alignment.

I‘m already used and loving the „blank space“ and -200 spacing to get there - why the change 😭 joking - please add this already

Many users would appreciate that, I suppose.

Could prove useful sometimes, better than workarounds.
