1. Variable chapter number

   The variable 'chapter number' gives a problem, wherever it is used it is represented as '1'.
   Because chapter numbers and paragraph numbers are not included in the Continuous header, it is useful if it can be displayed separately.
   Is it possible to include this numbering in the variable in the future (as an option)?

2. Aligning objects keeps button selected

   When clicking align left edges / horizontal centres / vertical centres etc the button remains highlighted.
   Then when trying to use the keyboard arrows to move the previously selected object - object does not move with the arrow key inputs.
   This only happens on the top control panel rather than the separate align window.

3. Navigating through pages with keyboard shift page up / page down jumps multiple pages Indesign V19.x and 20.0

   Navigating through pages with keyboard shift + page up/down was already flaky in the last couple versions of Indesign jumping two pages at once, especially after opening a document. With version 20.0 it now jumps two and sometimes three pages at once and even back when it should go forward. Sometimes navigating stalls completely and ID is "thinking" for several seconds before it jumps huge amounts 10-20 pages or completely at the end /beginning of the document. This behaviour is not seen when navigating via the pages palette.

   The documents in question do not have large media files linked where previews have to be updated, they are mostly text on landscape 16:9 pages (think of presentation slides)

   We would need more info on when you are using shift + page up/down key and what is the expectation. Are you using these when in Presentation mode?

   Using page up/down key, does not solve the purpose?

4. Crash on Launch

   When launching InDesign and Illustrator 2018, I get the attached alert. Illustrator will always show this alert but does function. InDesign will always show this alert and it opens once. Thereafter it will crash on launch every time until I reinstall it and then I get one launch again and repeated crashes on launch until I reistall. This is on two separate Macs running HIgh Sierra

   We’ve concluded our investigation and came up with the finding : Either the issue is fixed in the latest release of InDesign or the issue was intermittent in nature at the time of its reporting and is not reproducible now.

   We recommend you to upgrade to the latest version of InDesign 2020.0.1 (if you’re not already on it). It contains a lot of stability fixes.

5. Book-PDF pixelated

   Hello Support Team,

   I have been having an annoying InDesign issue for quite some time:

   I have a total of four computers available (1x HomeOffce, 1x work, 2x from colleagues) on which InDesign is installed. In each case the same program version (version doesn't really matter in this case, but current on our systems is 19.0).

   On ONE COMPUTER, since installing InDesign about 3/4 year ago, I have the problem that the PDF output of a book always produces pixelated graphics.
   When I output single documents, the quality is correct, exclusively with the PDF output from a book it is bad! The quality of most graphics is about the same as the preview in InDesign. Just pixelated.
   On the three other computers, on which I can log in, the problem does not occur, exclusively on this one!

   I have compared all settings with my colleagues (who do not have the problem), but everything seems to be the same. I have also copied the configuration from the HomeOffice computer, but without success.

   My workaround:
   I either let the colleagues export the PDF file, go to another computer in the company (if the respective colleague is smoking or otherwise not at his place) or I make the PDF file next time in the HomeOffice.
   But as we get more and more laptops and the colleagues lock their devices or take them home, I'm slowly reaching the end of the workaraound ;-)

   Have already searched the internet more than once, but haven't really found a solution.

6. No warning about missing links when exporting to jpeg or png

   If I have a document with a missing link, I get a warning when exporting to PDF that there are missing links. If I am exporting a jpeg or a png of the same document, I don't get any warnings at all about missing links and simply get pixelated graphics in the output.

   Exporting to a bitmap image should have the same warnings about missing links that exporting to PDF does.

   1. InDesign 18.4 (Windows), but this has been the case for several versions now.
   2. Place a graphic, then move the linked file so that it shows up as missing. Export the page/selection as png/jpeg
   3. Before exporting, a warning should pop up to say that my export contains missing links
   4. The graphic is exported without warnings, with the missing images showing up in the output as their low-res previews

7. InDesign exports out incorrect pdf document when another InDesign file is open and detached from main panel

   This is a weird bug that I just found. I'm using a Mac and have 3 monitors. The OS and all Adobe products are up to date. I am not using InDesign Beta. I have two separate InDesign files open and the second one is detached from the primary InDesign panel and on the other monitor. I have the primary document selected and go to File > Adobe PDF Presets > Press Quality and somehow InDesign will export out the other document that is not selected and on the other screen. I have recreated this twice with the same result. This only happens when I have another document open and detached onto the other monitor. The pdf will have the name of the file that it should be. However, its content will be the other file. Hope that makes sense.

8. Footnotes won't number sequentially; cannot select multiple or all footnotes

   When I place a Word document with footnotes into InDesign, the footnote paragraphs become separated from each other. I cannot click and drag to highlight text from more than one footnote, and I cannot use Command>A to select all the footnotes. Command>A only highlights all the text from the single selected footnote. Furthermore, the numbered paragraph style applied to the footnote paragraphs won't recognize that there was a previous paragraph flowing to it, so each paragraph is numbered as number 1. Even though "continue from previous" is selected in the numbering options. Also, the numbering style from Word imports as just a text number at the beginning of the first sentence of each paragraph, rather than being converted into the numbering of the paragraph.

   When I place a Word document with footnotes into InDesign, the footnote paragraphs become separated from each other. 9. Multiple copy paste functions

   I have been using the Indesign program for a long time. He has made very good progress. This is what I expect from you. We can only paste one copy with the copy paste command. It would be great if it could copy multiple texts separately. For example, when copy-pasting 3 or 5 different texts, you need to do each one by one. It would be much more practical if we could copy them all and name them like copy 1 copy 2 copy 3 and paste 1 paste 2 paste 3 options while pasting. I wish you good luck in your work. Halil Ermis

10. space before and after ordered and unordered lists

    I'd like to space before and after fields added to the Bullets and Numbering panel of paragraph styles. I often prefer to base my ULs and OLs on my body style which includes the space applied to the end of the paragraph. I can remove the space but then my list item lack the proper spacing for the last item in the list. I fix this by creating a last item style and apply it manually but this is a real pain. It would be nice to have space before and after fields to adjust the padding around a list, independent of the Indents and Spacing panel in the paragraph style. This would allow me to create a single style to manage ordered and unordered lists and limit potential errors by forgetting to apply a separate style to the last item of the list. Sure, I might need to do a little math to add the correct amount of padding to match paragraph spacing but a single style for lists is far easier to manage then two or more styles.

11. Exported PNGs or JPEGs RGB Colors Slightly Different Versus Illustrator Export For Screens

    So here is the situation and setup.

    Illustrator File with Pantone Colors (Book LAB colors)
    Color Settings are synced via Bridge (NA General Purpose)
    Illustrator file is in CMYK Mode

    In Illustrator File is exported to PNG (via Exported for Screens)

    In InDesign the same Illustrator file is placed in InDesign and then Exported as PNG file.

    When looking at the attached image the RGB values are slightly different most noticeably in the red. When looked at with the eyedropper in PS the CMYK values read as the same on both but the RGB is slightly different.

    For example:

    InDesign PNG File Red = R255 G68 B56
    Illustrator PNG File Red = R239 G72 B62

    I tried saving the Illustrator file with and without an embedded color profile and no difference.

    So the question is, am I missing a setting or option somewhere or does InDesign just convert the Pantone/Lab/Values differently and if so should they not be the same across apps?

    Note: I did do a test where I converted the Pantone Colors in the FIle to CMYK Process Colors and that made the colors equal but for workflow reasons I like to keep one file and not have to create separate Non Pantone versions of the file if it can be helped.

    So here is the situation and setup.

12. In the Table of Contents panel, make the 'Include Book Documents' option persistent and part of the style

    I am writing a book, with 18 chapters, each as a separate InDesign document, but all collected in a single Book.indb.

    I just now returned to writing the book after a several months break. Wanting to update my structure, I did Layout > Table of Contents and clicked 'OK'. My Table of Contents disappeared!

    After investigating, I realized that the 'Include Book Documents' option in that panel had become unchecked.

    I checked that option, ran Table of Contents again, and found all my table of contents entries generated successfully. Yay!

    HOWEVER, when I went to regenerate the Table of Contents, all my table of contents entries disappeared again! Examining that panel again showed that InDesign mysteriously unchecked that option, even though all my other options in that panel were unchange.

    Please change that panel operation to remember the selection of the 'Include Book Documents' option.

    Furthermore, I'd like that option to be included in the table of contents style, so that other tables of contents generated from that style have that option checked.

14. STACK ORDER BUG: Deleting page 1 and 2 causes object to change stack order on subsequent pages

    Problem
    1. Discovery of text box missing from page 39 in printed Catalogue.

    Review
    1. Immediately review INDD document to attempt to recreate error and report to client preliminary findings.
    a. The bug effects the stack ordering of objects on subsequent pages. In the Food & Beverage case, this missing text box from page 39 was in fact simply “underneath” the background yellow box.
    b. Error occurs when splitting out the cover pages to a separate document (to allow for a spine), whereby Page 1 and 2 and last 2 pages of document are deleted. Software bug appears to only actually occur when page 1 and 2 are deleted (eg. Not 2-3 or 1 and 3, or 2 and 33 etc etc.).
    2. An upgrade to latest version of INDD (CC2018 previous version CC2017)) did not fix the bug/change the result when steps repeated.
    3. Further review of software bug reveals reports to Adobe dating back from users to at least as far back as 2012.

15. no correct hyphenation of German words with dashes

    In German we have many terms consisting of two or more words with dashes in between. Everybody would hyphenate these naturally behind the dashes. InDesign is unable to do so, but suggests multiple wrong or ugly hyphenations and leaves the dashes as if they were non-breaking hyphens, which they are not! I know this problem since several years. I had it in CS5 and 6 as well as in every later version and today in InDesign 2020.
    For example: In cookbooks there are often intermediate products consisting of two or more ingredients. Some (artificial) examples:
    Das Mehl mit dem Kakaopulver, dem Backpulver und 1/4 TL Salz mischen und unter das Ei-Butter-Gemisch rühren. Die Mehl-Aprikosen-Flüssigkeit unterrühren. Die Eigelbe wie im Grundrezept beschrieben unter die Butter-Zucker-Mischung rühren. Ein Drittel Eischnee mit dem Mehl-Backpulver-Ansatz unterrühren, dann die restliche Ei-Bananen-Milch mit einem Holzkochlöffel vorsichtig unterheben.
    „Butter-Zucker-Mischung“ everybody would preferably and correctly hyphenate (\) like this: Butter-\Zucker-\Mischung, but InDesign produces only something ugly and devious like But\ter-Zu\cker-Mi\schung and so to speak considers both dashes as non-breaking hyphen. My only solution each time is manual hyphenation or an own entry in the user dictionary. The effort is too much because it happens too often.
    In German you can combine nouns arbitrarily and optionally separate them with dashes, so that the text is more clear and comprehensible. As the given combinations of nouns vary all the time it is an unnacceptable effort to define a hyphenation exception for every one of them in the user dictionary. InDesign just has to acknowledge that hyphenating directly behind the dash(es) is the first choice instead of simply wrong!
    I cannot imagine that a general rule like this would create a problem in other languages and different contexts. Hyphenation directly behind the dash(es) is always by far the most aesthetic solution.
    The problem does not only affect cookbooks. There are millions of possible cases, such as: Stephen-King-Filme, Agatha-Christie-Romane, Freund-Feind-Erkennung, Ein-Aus-Schalter, Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, Tag-Nacht-Schaltung, Willy-Brandt-Allee (along with thousands of other street names), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität …

    RE: Index / Table of Contents

    When creating an Index, you are limited to populate ONLY one Index style format. MS Word, it is greatly inferior program, and yet you can create a General Index, a Index of Cases and Index of Figures. Indesign is the leading industry program for designers and writers, NOT MS word.

    What happens if have lots of illustrations, data tables graphs and flowcharts all numbered accordingly. For example, an illustration (Figure 20 or Table 7), maybe on page 40, but there are 40 mentions throughout the document. Thus, in Indesign, you can not create a proper index list every page number of Figure 20, or a table etc. If you to want create more Indexes like the Index format, you CANNOT, you are forced to use the Table of Contents style.

    We are in a climate where there is a strong demand for indexes that best help our customers to locate information in the books and magazines we produce.

    We need to improve the Index function with the ability to create multiple Indexes, that follow the actual Index format (not the Table of Contents Format). If you use Peter Kahrel’s script or IndexMatic they are very limited what you can do. IndexMatic creates a concordance and Peter's Script uses the Topic area of the Index panel, mixing in or amalgamating all the indexes. It ends up being messy.

    W should be able to create SEPARATE indexes using the Index feature: (1) INDEX OF FIGURES (2) INDEX OF STATUTES, (3) INDEX OF TABLES (4) INDEX OF FLOWCHARTS and (5) INDEX OF GRAPHS. All populate every page number of every mentioned item (tables, figure, statute, flowchart etc).

    When creating an Index, you are limited to populate ONLY one Index style format. MS Word, it is greatly inferior program, and yet you can create a General Index, a Index of Cases and Index of Figures. Indesign is the leading industry program for designers and writers, NOT MS word.

19. Printing scale issues when printing with different color output options for composites

    Hello everyone,
    spotted nasty printing bug.
    When printing using "scale to fit", OUTPUT->Color: Composite and OUTPUT->Color: InRip or just Separations then the prints do not match (crop marks, image etc.) between "Composite" and "Separations".
    Paper size and printer model doesn't matter.
    Versions tested: InDesign CS6, CC17, CC18 all on OS X 10.10, 10.13
    Test file attached.

    I am using InDesign for the first time in a few months.
    I am having issues with previewing my document.
    I am on a MacBook Pro 16 inch 2019, Version 11.3.1, using the most updated InDesign 16.2.1.
    Please fix!
