  1. Apple text replacement does not work in indesign

    Mac M2
    Sonoma 14.2
    Indesign 19.0.1

Mac text replacement does not work in Indesign nor Illustrator.

How can I change this? What is blocking this in the Adobe programs?

(EXAMPLE: on every other program on the Mac when I type wf, it replaces it with the word wayfinding)

  2. Importing text styles from previous versions of InDesign cause a freeze

When I try to import text styles from files I made just a couple weeks ago in August, InDesign immediately bogs down (slow mouse movement for 1 second), and then freezes.

I am able to successfully import text styles from InDesign files created with previous versions of InDesign (<14.0) when I install and run InDesign 13.1.1, but have been unsuccessful with v14.

  3. Spinning Beach Ball appears every time I try to highlight text

    1. InDesign 18.0
    2. Seems just clicking with the Text Tool gets a spinning ball. Even worse if I try to highlight after clicking. 30-60 second wait. 3, Expect to highlight text as in the past.
    3. Once the ball stops spinning, maybe one character has been highlighted.

    Troubleshooting steps:

    Tried resetting preferences. No change.
Checked for corrupted fonts and removed. No change. (I'm using fonts from TypeKit, which don't appear to be installed in FontBook.)
Uninstalled InDesign. Shut down computer. Reinstalled InDesign.
Checked for corrupted file. (Saved copy. No change. Saved to imdl. No change.)
Tried opening file on different computer. Same…

  4. Changing language setting of paragraph text causes turnovers to change

    Indesign Version 16.1 Windows 10 Home 64-bit

Given some random body text, the default language setting was English: USA, if I want to change this to any other language like English: UK (for spell checking reasons) it causes the turnovers of certain paragraphs to change.

Different fonts do the same thing, I primarily tested on a non-type 1 version of Melior and Helvetica but also tried some Adobe Fonts. However, different language settings cause different bits of text to change their turnover, ergo English: USA has different turnovers to English: USA Legal.

Changing this setting in the Paragraph style…

  5. Random missing text which does not affect the PDF output

    Greetings,
Please compare the two screenshots that I've posted. One is a shot from InDesign, and the other is a screenshot from the PDF output of the same text. As you can see there are some missing lines in when I look at the text in InDesign.
    Some notes:
    1) It always happens with list items (bullet lists, numbered lists)
    2) The random missing text parts changes as I change the magnification (zoom) level
    3) It happens on all my documents
    4) I haven’t changed anything recently. No InDesign updates, etc.
    5) The font used is Minion Pro and…

  6. Applying a different swatch not always working (bug?)

It happens every now and then that changing the color of text by selecting the text with the text tool and clicking on the desired swatch does not change anyting. You can select the desired color, but the text color stays the same. It does not seem to be document related and is not always happening. If you use the color picker to select a random color from the document, the problem disappears. You can find more comments and examples on this issue in the Support Community: https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign/can-t-change-colors-from-the-swatch-panel/m-p/11859690

  7. Find Glyph uses character style set in the Text tab

It's not possible to set a character style in the Glyph tab of the Find/Change window. But if you set a character style in the Text tab, the Glyph tab uses that style to limit the search scope.

    Steps to reproduce:

    1. Start a new document, add a character style. (Doesn't matter what formatting you add to the character style.)
    2. Place a text frame and enter 'xx'.
    3. Apply the character style you added in step 1 to the first x.
    4. Set the character style in the Find Format field of the Text tab of the Find/Change window.
    5. Go to the Glyph…

Need More Info  ·  amaarora responded

    Hi,
In step 4, are you setting the find format field to be the character style you have created in step step 1?
If yes, then InDesign will only find those “x” which have the character style same as in the find format field (=character style created in step 1 and applied to only first x)
    https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/find-change.html

Please can you elaborate a little more on the steps.

  8. Unable to drag nodes text frame

    InDesign 15.0.2, running Catalina 10.15.4

I can easily add/remove nodes to a text frame but I have tremendous difficulty trying to move a node with the direct selection cursor. When I click and drag the node, the entire frame moves, indicating the node never got selected. A node seems to only manage to get selected about 10% of the time. I am not doing anything special for that to happen. It randomly works and 90% of the time it doesn't. Very frustrating.

  9. Spacing text is different in InDesign 2021

When opening a document in version 2021 which is created in 2020, the text looks exactly the same, but when you try to change the spacing of a word, the whole alinea is recreating a whole new spacing. Looks like it has something to do with metric, but it's really annoying. Spacing one word means re-spacing the whole alinea. Anyone else experienced the same?

  10. How do you disable the new "Alt Text" icon that shows in the lower-left corner of image frames?

It's like the AI feature that was added in Illustrator. I can't find an option to disable it and it's very distracting. It looks like a mistake in the artwork and will stay the same size regardless of zoom level. Disabling the two Alt Text features in Generative AI preferences did NOT fix this.

  11. Data Merge to PDF ignoring text variables in tag line

    First encountered issue: https://community.adobe.com/t5/InDesign/Data-Merge-to-PDF-ignoring-text-variables-in-tag-line/td-p/10606867

Data Merge to PDF ignoring text variables in tag line

I posted the previous in Communities over 5 years ago on Sep 13, 2019 and it still hasn't been addressed.

Is there any reason that a file merged directly to a PDF (rather than to an Indesign file, then saved as a PDF) would refuse to parse text variables set in InDesign?

Document has text variables selected so that final will have a tag line with date and page count.

When I merge my data to an InDesign file, then save as PDF, the…

  12. Right-to-Left and Left-to-Right text boxes and style sheets are confusing

    Dear Adobe InDesign Team,

Please simplify how users specify left-to-right Western language text boxes and documents versus right-to-left Middle Eastern language text boxes and documents in the multi language version of InDesign.

There are no fewer that four places where paragraph direction and language specification appear in various places in the InDesign workspace.

Users would benefit from simplification of language-switching tools, because InDesign's interface does not readily expose what language text direction it is using and sometimes switches paragraph direction without users knowing what these international language settings are defaulting to.

My issue had to do with US English text

  13. Errors when using the Share for Review feature with highlight, strike-through and replace text.

    I have the InDesign v. 18.0
Everytime I use the Share for Review feature, no matter where I highlight, strike-through or replace the text, the place where I want to make the suggestion is never accurate. If I try to highlight a text, when I see it the InDesign program and click the review in the Review window, it just brings me to a different page. The highlighted text isn't even highlighted at all. Same with strike-through and replace text. Of course, I can see the comment within the Review window, but when I click it, it…

  14. A problem about converting right-to-left text to the newest version

    Hello,
I have been using Indesign v18.5 and created a lot of documents for a book in Hebrew and Arabic.
My paragraph styles have the property "Character Direction: Default" which, of course, organized my text as RTL for Hebrew and Arabic, and LTR for English text.
After converting the documents to the newest version (v19.0), some (and only some) of the punctuation marks (such as ".", "!", "?") and even some of the spaces, were placed in a wrong manner: to the right side of the text, instead of being placed to the left of the text as…

  15. Text of title of Open file dialog window is too close to the edge

Text of title of Open file dialog window is too close to the edge.

Though rather cosmetic issues, it’s annoying to the eye of a designer. ;-) (InDesign 17.2.1, macOS 12.3, Czech language)

  17. InDesign online help lacks an important point (bug in help text, not in the app)

You should mention in the online help text at https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/frames-objects.html#object_export_options_cc_cs6_cs5_5 that a vector object's alt text will not be included in the epub file unless you also set the export settings to rasterize the object. (Basically: you can't include a vector object to an epub file in a vector format. Not even it's alt text.)

  18. Accessible alt text for hyperlinks needs to be supported by scripting

With InDesign scripting, it's possible to search for "searchTerms" from one column of a tab-delimited file, then set corresponding hyperlinks from another column. This means I can set hundreds of hyperlinks in just a few minutes. However, it remains impossible to set the hyperlink's alt text with a script — that function isn't scriptable. So either I ignore this important accessibility requirement (not an option), or I still have to manually edit each hyperlink, one at a time, wasting many hours and introducing the possibility of errors on each one.

For example, a document contains hundreds of product numbers or…

  19. Footnote reference disappears when adding Unicode 1D513 into line

    I am using InDesign 14.0.2.

We are a book publisher, and we sometimes use a special character in some of our academic work: a gothic P—the Unicode character 1D513 (Mathematical Fraktur Capital P). See: https://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/1d513/index.htm

However, it does something very wonky with footnotes, which seems to be a bug. If we insert this character—Unicode 1D513—in the same line as a footnote reference, it makes the footnote reference disappear. The footnote stays in place. We have tried different fonts, but it doesn't seem to be font dependent. However, if it is in the same line, but after the footnote reference, it…

  20. Colours not previewing when changing Paragraph rules and text colours

When changing the colour of text or paragraph rules in my document, the colours are not changing on the page - they are still showing as white, even though both rules and titles have been changed to orange.

If I drag the text block off the page to the bleed/slug area, the correct colour change can be seen. When I export the pages to PDF the colour is also showing up correctly, yet I can’t see them when working in the document. See screen shot below.
