  1. Allow Optical Margin Alignment to apply only to punctuation.

Optical Margin Alignment does a great job allowing quotation marks and hyphens to hang into the column gutters, but it also make characters like A, W, and T do the same, which is often too high a price to pay. Fix this by allowing an option it to only apply it to punctuation.

  2. Improve tables for tagged pdf and accessibility

Tables needs some improvement for better and accessible PDF output.

    1. There are no options for vertical table headings. I’m not talking about complex tables just simple tables with a custom amount of heading columns from the left or the right. InDesign should tag those cells as <TH> as it does for horizontal table headings or footers.
    2. Those simple tables and its table headers should get a scope attribute which says if the heading is used for a column or a row. The use of the either the scope attribute or id’s is a PDF/UA requirement.

  3. Multiple find an replace

How if you make 10 or 15 replacements at once? With replacing options each, or global replacing options, as a suggestion, the dialog is two columns, the left column contains the find text boxes, and the right column contains the replace text boxes. This will be GREAT and SAVES much time. Thanks Adobe Brains!

  4. Paragraph Border Controls when Split across Columns or Frames

There needs to be a control that "If paragraph breaks between columns or frames" restricts the paragraph border to: "baseline" , "cap-height" and perhaps a value offset for this. At the very least there needs to be the "clip to frame" option for paragraph border like there is for paragraph shading. However, the controls for baseline and cap-height would be ideal.

  5. Multiple styles per element with cascade like CSS

So many documents get output into electronic formats now. The limitation of only one style per element (paragraph, character, object) makes it difficult to map what is happening in InDesign to good HTML and CSS.

If InDesign allowed multiple styles to be applied to an element, with cascade rules like CSS, then electronic output would be easier and the quality of generated markup could be improved. In addition, being able to apply simple style changes to override more comprehensive styles would simplify documents and reduce the number of styles needed to make little variations of design possible..

  6. Paragraph Borders: Inset vs Offset or "Keep Within Frame"

LOVE that borders and shading are now built into paragraph styles; but, I would like to be able to create a paragraph border with an inset (instead of an offset), or something like the "keep in frame" option for paragraph rules. The result is a paragraph outline in line with the other paragraphs above and below it, but with an inset paragraph inside the border.

  7. Add more paragraph rule design options

I would be nice to have more creative options in paragraph rule designs. In the 15 years I've used InDesign, the rule design options have not changed.

  8. Allow bullets and numbers to hang outside of the text frame

There is currently no way to make a bullet or number hang outside of a text frame properly. The "optical margin alignment" feature control is iffy at best.

Attached are two photos that show what I mean.

In the first example, the "Correct" green bullets are not achievable in InDesign unless every other paragraph except for the bulleted paragraph has an additional positive left indent on all of its lines. It would be so much easier if we could just add a negative left indent to the first line of the bulleted paragraphs.

In the second example, a document that…

  9. Add features to draft legal briefs

Legal filings are just complicated, cross-linked books.

Lawyers have to follow court rules when typesetting appellate briefs.
    See e.g., http://www.ca2.uscourts.gov/clerk/case_filing/rules/rules_home.html
    https://www.supremecourt.gov/filingandrules/rules_guidance.aspx

WordPerfect has a few useful features: see "Legal Toolbar" https://www.wordperfect.com/en/product/professional-edition/#features

You should add a feature to create a Table of Authorities (ToA). The ToA lists each authority cited along with every page on which it is cited. The ToA has different sections for different kinds of authorities, e.g., cases, statutes, etc.

The best way would be to have InDesign identify authorities/citations. Most lawyers follow the Bluebook. https://www.legalbluebook.com/default.aspx
    Others follow the RedBook…

  10. underline outdent/indents

The border and rules have options to outdent or indent, but the underline style does not. Sometimes you need a character style to highlight a word, and the only way to do that is with the underline style. It doesn't look great when there is no space on either side of the highlight, so you need to add extra spaces before and after the word. Can this be added to the underline style options?

Maybe it should be a new feature called ”highlight.” It would work like Microsoft Word but with options.

  11. BETTER TABLE CONTROL FEATURES!!!!

this!!! Complete overhaul to tables in InDesign !!!!! https://forums.adobe.com/message/10898726

IT IS SO ON THE MONEY and I am sure there are other great suggestions here, but seriously indesign tables are pathetic

right now I am especially vexed by this fact that Joe Jacob writes:
"Why is it that the total width/height of a table cannot be constrained to the size of the bounding box it's in? Why, when the table exceeds these limits, does a column or row just disappear? "

"Why am I left just eyeballing it to make sure my table is neat and evenly spaced out? Why…

  12. split column gutters too wide - need a "negative" width setting

The split columns feature is great, and I use it often. But when I have only two columns of generally narrow width, the resulting gutter gap is way too wide. I can adjust it down to zero, as I have done in the attached image, but it would be so helpful to be able to go into the negative numbers (or use some other method) to bring these columns much closer together.

  13. No repeat option wanted for headers and footers in table options

When you've got headers and footers in tables, there is no way to prevent them from repeating at all.

There are currently three options in InDesign Table Options:
    1. Every Text Column
    2. Once per Frame
    3. Once per Page

I'd like to see an option for "NONE" or "NO REPEAT".

I can also think of "Once per Spread" as a valid setting, but NONE is the most important, since the current solution is to convert the headers to body rows, and that destroys the information about the header rows actually being headers.

  15. New language definition for URLs

URLs are not English, or French . . . they need their own language setting because the rules for breaking them at the end of the line are unique to URLs and do not follow rules for other languages.

Currently we have to use Break and Nobreak character styles and the discretionary line break character to force the URLs to break before the punctuation instead of after it, and to not hyphenate strings of characters.

Adding these codes often messes up the ability to use various scripts or plugins to generate hyperlinks. If InDesign had a URL language, procedures that…

  17. Rule Above/Rule Below dialog

Please make both Rule Above and Rule Below visible at the same time, rather than toggling between them. Oftentimes, both are used in conjunction with each other. And there's plenty of room to do so. If need be, the Keep in Frame checkbox can be moved up next to the button for rule on/off.

  18. Paragraph border and splitted columns

When working with the paragraph border option, its impossible to split the columns and make it look decent, without a huge workaround.

It would be great if the "split column" options could habe a checkbox like "do not split paragraph border" or so.

  19. Links panel: Place time

In "Links panel" we already have the option to add or change the columns displaying usefull info about the linked object. Choosing "Place Date" is an option to show the date when the object was placed.
Now... it would be neat if, in addition, the column could show the "time" as well.

  20. Improving the various options of footnotes

In one of the latest versions of InDesign, endnotes have undergone a significant upgrade as they have become live endnotes than static endnotes. But unfortunately, the footnotes are left far behind.
We really ask that you rewrite the footnote feature so that the following features are possible:
    1) Select all the footnotes at once (by Cmd + A or Ctrl + A)
    2) Option to split footnotes into a number of columns is different from the main text (not just span footnotes but complete control over the number of columns)
    3) Continuous footnotes in the same paragraph (run-in).…
