Restart footnote numbering flexibility
Currently, regardless of whether the "Restart Numbering Every: ...." checkbox does nothing to force footnotes to continue across multiple, unthreaded frames. I would have thought that if you didn't tell it to restart, it would not and would continue to increment each time if found a footnote - but that is not the case. We have various footnote scenarios based on our different clients:
For some, they want the footnotes numbered consecutively throughout their report. Others want it restarted with every major section. But these reports are complicated - hundreds of pages - and it is very inconvenient…

Footnote Numbering Across Independent Text Frames
Currently, footnote numbering continues only within threaded text frames. It would be extremely helpful if footnote numbering could optionally continue across separate, unlinked text frames within the same document. This would allow for more flexible layout designs without breaking numbering consistency.

Footnote numbering options for EPUB export
When exporting a single story into EPUB (2 or 3), the footnotes are numbered from 1 to x over all xhtml files with no chance to control their numbering. The footnote numbering options from within InDesign (per page, per section, etc.) should be respected while exporting.
Alternatively there should be some appropriate options in the export panel.

Automatic footnote numbering in a book
Dear Sir, dear Madam,
Please make the numbering of footnotes automatic from chapter to chapter in a book, as for the chapter's first page.
It is very tedious and risky to do it manually, which seems the only option today, even in the last release (16.0).
Thank you.

Footnote starting feature
I have a suggestion
I would like to see an option to restart footnote numbering. An option to number footnotes according to paragraph style would be good.3 votes -
Restart footnote/endnote numbering after chosen Paragraph Style
Please add the possibility to reset the numbering of footnotes/endnotes in the paragraph style.
This should be a Paragraph Style Option.
If someone works in just one long tread, it would be much faster to reset footnotes or endnotes numbering automatically after specific paragraph style instead of making sections once and once again (after every reflow) .

Synchronize footnote settings in books and number across document
Regarding using books and footnotes: I really, really wish the footnote settings were something you could synchronize when synching your book. Also, I wish there was an option to continue numbering throughout the individual documents. Currently, if you do not have your whole document threaded, it will restart the footnote numbering, so I have to set it to restart numbering at each page (or section).
I frequently have books with a dozen different chapters and would like the footnotes to number sequentially within each chapter; and it would be one less thing to remember to edit if…8 votes -
Footnote numbering for Persian and Arabic ePubs
It is a significant undertaking when one needs to convert an Arabic/Persian (RTL languages) book into an ePUB. In addition, the software capabilities diminish as the number of readers decreases. The InDesign Development Team has done a decent job making the InDesign 2022, version 17.3 (Eng/AR), work well. However, there is still a lot to accomplish in non-native languages to be processed.
One major issue with InDesign is that the only option for footnotes is using Latin numbers (1,2,3,...). When a book is written in Arabic/Persian, the same kind of numbers are needed (۱، ۲، ۳،...). When creating a…

It is SO important to have footnotes continue the numbering throughout a whole document without restarting the numbering every text frame
It is bad document design to have the whole document in one single text frame (a nightmare when doing changes and everything moves). At the very least each chapter should start with a new text frame. So it seems crazy that you can set footnote numbering to restart every page, spread or section but when none of these are selected the numbering should flow through the whole document! NOT restart for each text frame. Thank you.

Continuous numbering of footnotes and endnotes; endnotes to separate chapter
PLEASE add these features to the footnote and endnote functionality of InDesign:
- Continuous numbering of footnotes and endnotes throughout the various indd files within a book document
- Ability to put the endnotes of the different indd files within a book document in a separate .indd file at the end of the book; numbering continuous OR per chapter.118 votes -

Footnote Improvement: Footnotes do not always get consecutive numbers. Footnotes within quoted material retain their original numbers.
This post is similar to "Custom numbered footnotes." Footnote Improvement: Footnotes do not always get consecutive numbers. Footnotes within quoted material retain their original numbers. To allow this, all Adobe needs to do is to create a second kind of footnote, the non-sequential footnote. The existing footnote style has a counter that increments by 1 every time the user inserts a footnote. Create a non-sequential footnote style that requires the user to enter the desired footnote number, and do not let that footnote increment the counter in the existing, sequential footnote style. Then the…

Multiple footnote referencing
I thought of a way to implement multiple references to the same footnote without breaking HTML links between footnotes.
You could allow for the creation of multiple footnote links from the text into footnotes that point to the same footnote, with a sequence of different secondary designations. For example, footnote 1a, 1b, 1c... all could point to Footnote 1. Then, in the footnote, you could open with 1 a b c ..., with the different letters providing alternate linkbacks to the other places in the text.
This is how Wikipedia handles multiple referencing to the same…

Custom numbered footnotes
One feature is really missing from the beginning - and this a free style numbering (endnotes and footnotes as well).
So many times we get the Asterisk (*) as start, followed by numbered footnotes (1, 2, 3, 4, …). So it would be helpful to define something like this: *, # (<-- which means, first Asterisk and numbered from up there, etc.) Or *, o, # etc.
Example for placed footnote text:
- Temp o Temp 1 Temp 2 Temp 3 Temp . . .
It could be implemented in the footnote area of the text container (Command/STRG B)…

Restart footnotes after a style
In addition to being able to restart footnotes every new section, page, or spread, add the ability to restart footnote numbering after a paragraph style of your choosing. Let's say I wanted to have footnotes restart each chapter and each chapter began with a numeral with the paragraph style named "chapter number," then I wouldn't necessarily have to watch or redo my sections, they would just automatically restart (at 1) after each "chapter number" style.

“Split Footnotes” under Numbering & Section Options
Hello,
I want to ask for a little function tweak of “Split Footnotes”.
By now, you can only adjust “Split Footnotes” for the whole document.
This is difficult for documents with many pages! Sometime there are some footnotes in a chapter that you want to break over to the next page because they are to long. But the rest of the footnotes should be only on one page.
It would be nice to setup “Split Footnotes” as an “override” of the global function in the Numbering & Section Options in the Pages panel. So you…

footnote/endnote styles
Ability to define footnote/endnote styles (as opposed to the formatting styles contained within the the footnote/endnote definition) and synchronize these across the book documents. Would save a lot of time in books with many documents.

No way to sync footnote options between documents.
I have a book consisting of several documents. I can sync styles between documents, but not footnote options. Syncing styles does not sync footnote options.
Having to set footnote options for each document that has them is onerous.

Allow to use a footnote multiple times on one page
I'm working with tech documents and spec lists that often have one footnote applying for several items like:
Item A
Item B (footnote 1)
Item C (footnote 2)
Item D (footnote 1)
Item E (footnote 3)Instead of having footnote 1 listed twice (which looks very odd and consumes space), it would be awesome to have some slick way to deal with this without the need of working with crossreferences and alike.
I'm aware of adding a superscript 1 for the second appearance but it doesn't automatically counts up when adding a new footnote prior to…
