Save Preferences
For about 14/15 years I never had to reset preferences in InDesign.
Since CC2017 it's more or less once a week.
Colors disappearing.. panels blind or empty.. tools not working.. font now showing.
Panels self increasing size...
But it seems we have to deal with it, so we probably need a way to SAVE PREFERENCES.
Save preferences in a moment everything work fine.. and restore it when (after just few days) nothing works anymore.
Every time people have to reset preferences, they have to restore everything. UI colors, workspace, Application Frame (that mac users normally never use) Old Dialog way (the new are unusable and way too slow).
Too many things to restore and too often.
Hi everyone,
InDesign provides an option to export and import User Settings, providing users with a smooth and enhanced experience to restore their custom settings if needed. The feature is now available in the latest InDesign 2024(v19.3.0.058)

1. Doesn't tell you where you should save the exported user settings.
2. Doesn't say if the 'saved' user settings will load when you re-open the program, WHICH IS A KEY ELEMENT. -

Wow. Isn't this why Creative Cloud exists?
Just spent about 30 minutes searching around to find that this just BARELY got implemented and the help page for it is outdated showing a feature that no longer exists. So clown, Adobe.

This would be a very welcome addition as it would make it a painless experience to reset InDesign and then just reimport all your preferred settings. Or sit at a different computer and get InDesign up and running in seconds the way you are used to it.

InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop all drive me insane between the laptop and desktop. The workspaces are never the same. Sometimes with an update the workspace I have saved disappears and I have to start all over again setting it up. Sometimes it transfers over. There needs to be an easy way to sync the setting for workspace and preferences across all devices and save a backup of it, so InDesign on laptop matches InDesign on desktop, even after an update. Same for Illustrator and Photoshop.

Where the heck is the guide? I'll do it manually but everything I find on the Adobe site talks about "syncing" that is "no longer available".

Every time I re-open Indesign I lose my preferences.
I lose my preferred measuring unit and language preferences, I lose my preferred workspace and lose all my saved template sizes.I have tried to re-install Indesign from the Creative Cloud app.
I have tried un-installing and re-installing absolutely every Creative Cloud application, including the CC app itself.
I have tried forcing Indesign to forget preferences at startup. No luck with any of those things.

I concur with the comment saying we need a robust system for syncing our preferences and presets between devices! Let me sync my settings between my laptop and my desktop.

If I want to adjust the settings in 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 – or anything else – permanently, I need to close all my files. This system is extremely frustrating to me. It would be a lot more convenient for there to be an option at the bottom of each of the 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 that would look like this:
● 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬
🗹 Only for this document | ☐ New documents based on this templateBy default, the box 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 would be checked. Once you click 🗹 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞, it will be like that for future documents! Then, you click 𝐎𝐊 or 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐥.

Totally agree!
This issue should be merged with this: https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601021-adobe-indesign-feature-requests/suggestions/33795448-syncing-workspaces-and-preferences

To get a space the way you want it takes time and effort. To not be able to save and sync our preferences after being able to in the past is like someone coming in your office and taking their hand and raking everything off your desk.... only that would take less time to put back in place than setting up your workspaces in InDesign/ Illustrator/ Photoshop. Going through and setting up your settings and preferences is a hassle but then having to recreate all the template presets on top of it, that is just too much. I thought the upgrades were supposed to help bring us things to help us and save us time. You had a useful feature, why would you take it away?

Same here. Panels not loading or unable to open them at program start. Restart required. Getting a bit tired of this. This has been going on for years now, same accounts for Photoshop / Illustrator BTW.
TIP: delete InDesign caches first, this often solves many problems.
On Mac delete them here:
User/Library/Caches/
Delete these folders:
1) Adobe Indesign
2) com.adobe.InDesignWhen this doesn't work then delete preferences, setup InDesign again (yes, sigh, again!). Quit InDesign and copy the Preferences folder to a different location. Find ID preferences here:
User/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version XX — in my case Version 14
When InDesign goes awry again (yes, again) just quit and copy the preferences folder you saved back to the system preferences folder, overwrite existing ID prefs folder and be done. For a while at least. This saves you some time setting up the whole application again.

This has been irritating us for years - it's not a new problem with CC2017. However, it seems to be fixed with CC2019 for us. We have been using it for a couple of weeks without it happening.

In addition to this: we need a robust system for syncing our preferences and presets between devices.

The work of maintenance to support a designer is being done. Restoration of the environment of the designer is very important work by the operational part. Building of the environment that you can restore more easily is expected.

Many Japanese users have complained about this, too.
All users customize their preferences. After delete preference files is done, our customized preferences also disappear (it returns to the default setting). Whenever we do delete preference files, we have to recover them one by one, again, and again, and again.... This recovery work is a huge problem. This extra workflow wastes a lot of our times always. I request new feature that restores the user’s customize preferences at the same time as delete preference files.Japanese translation:

I find it absolutely UNACCEPTABLE that Adobe has yet to create an easy, reliable and fast way to export/import ALL InDesign preferences and/or settings to another computer.
Really can't believe that I have to follow a guide and do it manual. Still can't understand why you have this great products and a lack of intelligence to provide easy support, easy backup, easy sync, easy FAQs and all that. You're a mess, Adobe.
