1. Workspace resets every time I open (InDesign 2026)

   On the new InDesign (v21.0) all of my workspaces have been reset and aren't saving properly every time I open a new document. I even set up my docked tabs and tab groups and saved them to a NEW workspace within a fresh 2026 file, and it reset to a default state next time it's opened. It seems to ignore all of the tools I've chosen to remove from their tab groups and opens with all of the default tools within those tab groups.

   The screenshot with all of the icons is what all of my workspaces revert to upon opening InDesign 2026, while the other screenshot is what I've saved my workspace to include.

   On the new InDesign (v21.0) all of my workspaces have been reset and aren't saving properly every time I open a new document. 2. Make it possible to anchor a graphic to the beginning of a paragraph without five or six tries and two or three zooms

   It'll go AFTER the first letter…it'll go some random place in the first FEW letters, but before the first one? Especially if the first one is a sans-serif letter "I"? HAHAHAHAHAH! No. Not without cajoling, retrying, zooming, threatening, and telling it what a good little cursor it is.

   I realize this isn't an exciting problem, but it's been literally decades of this feature being…what's the technical term…bad.

3. History panel erases undo option and history steps (behavior different from previous version) and

   The history panel seems to be limited to 5 actions. Additionally, with the latest update (20.2), if you access the history panel at all, it overtakes the Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Shift+Z function for undo/redo as it has worked in the past.

   When the history panel is opened, it selects the most recent action. Even if the panel is closed, whatever is done after this point erases all the other actions, so that you are left with "open" as the previous step. Edit>Undo (Ctrl+Z) is disabled, and you can no longer undo work.

   Additionally, steps will sometimes combine themselves without any user action. (i.e. while documenting this, in between image 3-4 no action was taken except to switch between InDesign and the screen capture program). Switching in/out of InDesign erases the ability to undo work.

   If you type 6-7 characters, you can no longer undo anything prior to that. Open the history window, select a step, then place something.... undo is now limited to the place action; all other history steps are erased (as well as Ctrl+Z undo/redo steps).

   This is a huge step in the wrong direction.

   There are seemingly no settings related to history (unlike in Photoshop where a number of steps can be preserved). Iteration/layout experimentation is critical in InDesign and this update removes the ability to do that without incessantly creating a snapshot every time you do something or type more than a few characters.

4. blank screen when switching displays

   When I have a file open in InDesign 2025 on my MacBook Pro (14-inch, Nov 2023, 15.3.1) and switch between using the built-in display and an external monitor, the document view becomes completely black/blank, though all toolbars remain visible and functional.

   Steps to Reproduce:
   1. Open a file in InDesign on a MacBook Pro.
   2. Close the MacBook lid, connect to an external monitor, and wake the computer.
   3. The InDesign window stays open, toolbars are visible, but the artwork area is completely blank.
   4. Selecting all (Cmd + A) reveals bounding boxes, but no image or text is visible.

   This also happens in reverse:
   • If I’m working on an external monitor, then unplug it and open the MacBook to work, the same issue occurs.
   • My MacBook is always closed when connected to an external display, and I use an external keyboard and trackpad.

   Expected Result:
   • The document area should remain visible and fully functional when switching between the MacBook’s display and an external monitor without needing to restart InDesign.

   Actual Result:
   • The document area turns black/blank, preventing any interaction with the artwork.
   • Toolbars, menus, and selection boxes remain functional, but the contents of the document are completely invisible.

   Temporary Workaround:
   • Saving the file, quitting InDesign, and reopening fixes the issue temporarily.

   Additional Info:
   • OS, external display firmware, and InDesign are all up to date and have been happening for over a year.
   • Issue persists across different external monitors.
   • Unclear if this is an Adobe or macOS issue.

   Clicking on a text box takes about 5/6 seconds before it selects it to move it.

6. [ID-4255594]Hidden spreads are included in Table of Contents

   When you hide spreads, their individual page numbers change appropriately, but when you look at the table of contents and update that, the hidden pages still appear and the page numbers do not match those shown on the pages themselves.

8. InDesign 2025 / v20.0: »background task« tries to activate font all the time

   Working with the font Minion Pro InDesign 2025 wants to activate the font in the background (shown in the background tasks panel) although it IS activated.

   Closing the document does not bother InDesign. It still wants to activate the font (see screenshot 2).

   Quit & Restart helps, but it should work correctly without it.

   When typing in width and height into Document Setup it does not hold the measurements and reverts to last document opened measurements.

10. Placed TIF files export as grey boxes when exported to PNG format

    InDesign 19.5, macOS 14.6.1, Apple M1 Max chip

    1. With no document open, set the default view to "Fast" by choosing View > Display Performance > Fast Display.

    2. Create a new document, and place a TIF image on the page.

    3. Choose File > Export, and select PNG for the export format.

    The TIF image will export as a gray box. It should export as the actual image. Even if you choose View > Display Performance > High Quality Display and export again, the TIF image will still export as a gray PNG.

    If you close the file, change the InDesign default display to High Quality, and then reopen the InDesign file containing the TIF image, the image exports properly to PNG format.

    InDesign 19.5, macOS 14.6.1, Apple M1 Max chip

11. Publish Online: if forbidden character in the document name, the name has to be filled in again

    To me it’s okay that “special characters” are not allowed in the title of a "publish Online" document.

    But if a user gets this message, his/her title is completely deleted and he/she has to fill out the title again. Although there’s maybe only one forbidden character in it.

    Annoying. Any chance to change this?

12. last letter in text frame disappears from PDF Hebrew

    We're having issues with the last letter or the punctuation at the end of a sentence disappearing when the file is exported as a PDF. Primarily happens with right-to-left language, we're using Hebrew.
    Been happening since the update to 19.0 onward.

14. Problem Selecting Hebrew vowels and diacritics

    Problem Selecting Hebrew vowels and diacritics especially when there are Hebrew and English mixed in the paragraph, it seems like there is no visual distinction to determine what is being selected. This is so frustrating, and makes it impossible to use in the long run.

15. Placing an ICML file in an InDesign file ignores multiple artboards in AI files if they are embedded

    If you have an AI file with multiple artboards which is an embedded anchored object in a text frame it will always revert back to the first artboard when you place the ICML in InDesign.

    1. Create a new InDesign file.
    2. Create an AI file with two artboards and one simple object in each.
    3. Create a text frame in InDesign.
    4. Place the AI file in the text frame and choose the second artboard.
    5. Embed the AI file.
    6. Export the text frame as an ICML file.
    7. Place the ICML file into the document (not check in/check out).

    What happens:
    1. The "Pages" panel will show the correct preview.
    2. The "Links" panel will show the correct preview.
    3.. The text frame that is created will show the first artboard.

    Images:
    1. AI file with two artboards.
    2. Embedded image of artboard 2.
    3. After placing the ICML into the InDesign file it has reverted to display artboard 1, but the previews in the "Links" and "Pages" palettes are still correct.

    If you have an AI file with multiple artboards which is an embedded anchored object in a text frame it will always revert back to the first artboard when you place the ICML in InDesign.

    1. Create a new InDesign file.

16. Indesign 2024 Unable to Recognize Variable Fonts from Documents Created with Previous Version

    InDesign 2024 (v19.0) fails to recognize variable fonts from documents created in previous version. Specifically, Helvetica Now Variable weights and widths are reported as missing. Running MacOS Sonoma (but the same system opens the file without issue when using InDesign 2023… can’t be an OS issue.)

17. Variable font changes to Italic when a custom axis value is set, without user input. Also, the Italic axis cannot be controlled.

    This may be related to a somewhat similar Illustrator bug:

    Summary:
    1. Variable fonts that have separate but related roman/italic font files are handled badly by InDesign (and Illustrator). In InDesign, if you set a custom axis value such as Weight or Optical Size, the font changes to Italic immediately. This issue occurs in fonts such as Roboto Serif and Apple SF Pro, which are well-tested, popular, and important by many measures. It also occurs in fonts that have internal data that is known to be good, at least as far as FontBakery testing shows. It doesn’t occur in single-font-file variable fonts such as Acumin or Inter, which have built-in "slnt" axes.
    2. As a secondary but related issue, there should actually be an Italic slider or toggle for a variable font, if that axis is specified in the font’s STAT table.

    Version of InDesign: 18.2.1 (latest as of May 25, 2023). Also tested in latest prerelease, v18.4.

    Steps:
    1. Set some type with a font like Roboto Serif [variable].
    2. Open the variable font axes panel, and change an axis like Weight. The font will change to its Italic version, without user input. There is no clear way to change it back to Upright, without selecting a named instance like "SemiBold" – but that largely defeats the purpose of the font being variable.

    Expected result:
    A variable font should be able to have a custom weight value, without snapping to Italic. Likewise, there should actually be an Italic slider or toggle, if that axis is specified in the font’s STAT table.

    Actual result:
    It is impossible to set an upright variable font with a custom weight.

18. Adobe Caslon Pro: Glyph as bullet does not function

    InDesign version 18.2.1 (Windows 10 x64). I would like to use a glyph as a bullet (the opentype digit 3 of Adobe Caslon Pro - an acorn). In the paragraph style box for my "Bulleted list" style, I am trying to add the bullet. When I click "add" and then click "ok," a standard round black dot appears in my list of bullet characters to choose from. If I try to add my preferred glyph (or any of the other opentype glyphs from the font's set, for that matter), the program tells me: "The selected bullet already appears in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box with this font and style association. Specify a different font or style, or select a different bullet." I also cannot add the glyph as bullet manually in the lists window. In short, adding a glyph as bullet is not functioning. There has been extensive discussion of this issue on the Adobe Support Community. Many people have suggested numerous solutions, but none have worked. 20. Numbering restarts from 1 after an unnumbered style in exported html

    1. InDesign 18.1 (since 17.2.1)
    2. Create a numbered list paragraph, insert a line of a different paragraph style not containing numbers, continue the numbered list on the next line, the number continues from the previous list. Export this file to an html file.
    3. Expect the number to follow what we see in the InDesign file
    4. The number restarts from 1 after the inserted line of a different paragraph style

    This issue has been resolved in the latest version of InDesign 2024(v19.0).  Please update to this version of InDesign from Creative Cloud Desktop application to get the fix.
