Disturbed InDesign workflow with several Macs on Apple Server
All Macs in the network are running macOS High Sierra 10.13.1 and InDesign CC 2018 13.01 – Server is running OS X El Capitan 10.11.5 and Apple Server 5.1.5.
Prior to InDesign CC 2018 everything went fine. Now, users in the network (SMB share) are having issues opening/editing files saved by another user (with the same macOS and Indesign version, as mentioned above).
I knew that the initial High Sierra upgrade could break file sharing, but all Macs have the latest macOS security update installed (hence version 10.13.1).
Sometimes, if a user waits for up to 30 minutes, he/she can open InDesign files saved by another user without a problem. Nevertheless, this issue breaks workflow gravely.
Any ideas on this problem? Anyone experienced issues like this? Perhaps updating the server to High Sierra and a newer Server version could fix the problem?
Thanks in advance for your input.

Does anyone know if InDesign is more stable working on files over SMB shares yet? We had major issues a couple of years ago and went back to AFP, which is running fine but I am aware that AFP is deprecated.

Try AFP if possible (although it's deprecated). This even solved an issue where some Macs won't shut down (probably because they couldn't unmount some network volumes.

We are having the same trouble...Pages/Book saved by one user will not open on the network by another user. Says pages are still open. All computers OS and Indesigns are fully updated. The user that built the pages has to reopen them and resave and close...then the other users can open the files. Slows the workflow.

... and solved some other smaller problems.

My solution so far: I forced all shares in the network to be available via AFP only! No problems anymore so far. This even increased network speeds.

we are having the same problem here. We also can not open a copy of the files affected. This is really criplling us.
