Gray box replaces images
Adobe InDesign 13.0.1
Mac OS 10.11.6
Today for first time, I had three similar 8-page newspaper documents open and one of them displayed only a gray box where the front page photo (full page image) had displayed before. I tried checking all display settings and could not bring the image back. Meanwhile, other full page ads got gray boxes also. The other two documents displayed similar content with no problem.
I quit InDesign, and re-opend problem document. It then displayed all of the images properly.

Check your display performance settings first. If you use fast display instead of high quality - then gray boxes are normal and you will fix it easily.

I have the same problem. It is due in my case to disk/file protection issues.
It display perfectly in ID, but exports as grey box or X box (PDFs) -

I quite Indesign and the boxes remained gray. I could not delete them and replace the images. I could not delete the page they were on.

I resolved this issue with a Adobe Customer Support Specialist. The solve was simply saving the images that would not export from Indesign out of Photoshop again. The images were originally saved on my Dropbox, I created a small folder on my desktop to house the newly saved images.

I'm trying to export a magazine layout I designed in InDesign. Typically I place a rectangle on the layout first and place the image inside of it using the rectangle as a frame. When I export the file to save as a PDF all the images disappear and I'm left with just the frames (in a different color) and the text. Please help me!
