reset cell shading
It would be helpful to be able to reset the alternating row/column shading. Similar to the way numbering can be reset in paragraph styles.
This way people can build in subhead rows or add more complex styling.

Indesign CS6 and prior one could easily make footnotes inline for multiple footnotes in a page. Now with the new Version it is gone.
Indesign CS6 and prior one could easily make footnotes inline for multiple footnotes in a page. Now with the new Version it is gone. Please bring back the simplicity of the footnotes and try not to mess up what works. Now the forced and default spacing between the footnotes does not allow for inline Footnotes. Even Peter Karhel’s script does not work.

Empower Indesign "Books" to export PDF's that display perfect spreads between "chapters."
PDF is the only way to view a complete "Book." But Indesign is designed only to generate single-page PDF's. That is fine for final output for print production, when one needs a single-page document. But it fails during the design process, when one needs to show the clients a whole book (with complex visual/verbal design) as spreads. What happens now is that a left-hand chapter-ending page will appear as a single page in a spread-displaying PDF. And the right-hand chapter-beginning page will appear as a single page. The internal pages of the chapter will display as spreads. The PDF looks…

Updating numbers only in a table of contents
We should have two options when it comes to update a table of contents.
1- Update entire table
2- Update page numbers onlyWord allows it. Why don’t InDesign too?
I’ll be waiting for this change in next update! It’ll change my life!

Adding feature for first page number in Text Variable
We work a lot in typesetting Journal which need to mention page number for each article. The 'last page number' in Text Variable are very useful and I wish to have an option for first page number in the feature. In current situation, I have to change the first page number manually if the pagination changed.
Thank you.10 votes -
Add Endnote Support for InCopy
Please add endnote support for Adobe InCopy. Without it, InCopy sadly is pretty much useless.
InDesign Footnotes are too inflexible and working with manual Footnotes is not really feasible in larger documents.9 votesEndnote support was added to InCopy in version 2020.

TOC Page number BEFORE and align number RIGHT automatically
InDesign has offered the ability to put the page number before the text entry in a generated table of contents for quite some time. However, if you have more than 10 pages, pages 1-9 don't align right (as they should - or if more than 100 pages, 1-99). It would be great if you could have that done automatically without adding a tab stop in the paragraph style and manually adding a tab before each page number.

Change PDF page number / .ai artboard number without placing the file each time
In a similar sense to the Object Layer Options, it would be awesome if there was a context menu option to switch to a different page number in .pdf and different artboards in .ai files.
This way when inserting a multiple page PDF For example, I can copy the object then go into the context menu and select the next desired page. Currently I spend more time looking through the OS filesystem to place the same PDF again.

Dynamic baseline related unit of measurement
Please consider the addition of a dynamic unit of measurement that relates to the document’s baseline. Such a unit will make it possible to express various parameters throughout the design as a multiplication or division of the document’s baseline.
We would for example be able to express a header’s leading as twice the number of baselines, or a paragraph’s space after in any number of baselines.
The unit’s relation to the document‘s baseline means that it’s dynamic: whenever you change the baseline, all values expressed in this unit will change accordingly. There will be no more need to adjust these…
144 votesHi All,
This indeed a great suggestion. I wanted to understand a little more about this request.
1. The way this request is described its majorly about figuring out how to change the various text attributes in a single step rather than having to change multiple styles to make that happen. It would helpful if you can mention which all attributes you all would want to be dependent on the baseline (space before/after, size, leading any other).
2. Which kind of documents (magazines, brochures, books etc.) do you see this to be more important for you.
3. Wouldn’t a similar method (not sure if we could base it on baseline though!!) for changing the layout also help, if you could define the sizes of objects in relation to the page size. Do you think extending this feature to the layout also makes sense.
4. If you can share some files… -
Soft version of "Update Table of Contents"
If there is a Table of Content, with some correction in it (for example line breaks) and after that, there is a small correction in the content area, which followed by loosing one page. Therefore it would be great, to just update the Page-numbers, instead updating the whole ToC.
(sorry for bad english)

Live references to images/figures
I need each image to have a caption which begins with "Figure 1: blah blah" and if I move the image, the caption should automatically re-number. I think I have the automatic re-numbering working using paragraph styles, but doing that seems to prohibit the other things I need to do, such as...
I need to have each image coupled with an in-text reference, like. "As seen in Figure 1, blah blah blah." And if I move the image, again, not only would the caption re-number but the in-text reference to it would re-number automatically, too.
Finally, that in-text reference…

Allow negative indentation!
Please allow negative indentation!
That would make all kinds of hanging bullets, chapter numbers and outdentations easy without any workaround (like "indent everything but the headlines and lists" ...). It would make text layout faster, purer and cleaner, as the type area could be correctly defined just for the copy text.
I think this simple change should be easy to implement and bring enormous relief for our craft.

Allow multiple character styles to be applied to characters
Allow multiple character styles to be applied to one character.
There should be an »appearance« panel as in Illustrator, which reflects the hierarchy of multiple applied character styles to one character/a text. This would ease the work with XML and reduce the number of character styles needed. Nowadays you have to trick with GREP styles etc. to apply multiple character styles to one character.
With such a feature, I could define »italic« and »bold« and has no need to define »bold italic«. This will even end up in better HTML export: instead of <span class="BoldItalic">blabl</span> there could be the much…479 votesThanks for the suggestion. We have started to explore this feature. New “Hide Spread/Show Spread” feature: automatic page number adjustment
I was excited to discover the new 'Hide Spread/Show Spread' feature in InDesign. Page numbers on visible spreads don’t adjust automatically when other spreads are hidden in the document. Thus the feature becomes useless for any document that uses page numbers – at least within my workflow.

Bullet lists: add option for custom spacing of first and last entries
In a paragraph style defined as a bullet list, you often need to have more space BEFORE THE FIRST item or AFTER THE LAST item. This is possible in CSS and would just need a couple of extra fields added to the "Bullets and Numbering" section in the "Paragraph Style" panel.
The only option now is to create additional styles or to use overrides.
2 votesUse the Indents and Spacing section of the Paragraph Style dialog to specify Space Before and Space After. Use the option “Space Between Paragraphs Using Same Style” to specify the space between the bulleted list items.
For example, if Space Before is 6 pt, Space After is 8 pt, and Space Between is 0 pt, the bulleted list will have 6 pt before the 1st item, 8 pt after the last item and in between the bulleted list items, space will be 0 pt.
Hope this helps.

Page number ranges in TOC
Table of contents don't have the ability to add page ranges.
So the contents look like this:
Section A . . . . . . . 1
Section B . . . . . . . 5
Section C . . . . . . . 9
When they should look like this:
Section A . . . . . . . 1-4
Section B . . . . . . . 5-8
Section C . . . . . . . 9
All this needs to be implemented is to have the second number be one page less than…

Improvement Indesign Accessibility Features
I use Indesign to create accessible PDFs but there are a few features that should be there.
TABLES
Automatic Header Column and Header Row tagging. At the moment Header Column is recognized but not Header Row. If this was implemented you could go a step further and add ID tags and scope automatically. This would be a huge time saver since this all has to be done manually in Acrobat. It would also be nice to have an option to specify the Title of the table as a caption tag.FOOTNOTES
At the moment you have to add the…43 votes -

In the paragraph options, we should have an option for how long the last word in a paragraph must be in order to turn down to its own line. Wording could be "minimum of __ characters on last line" And allow us to turn this feature on or off in addition to specifying the number of characters on the last line.

Ability to change the page of the linked pdf
I would love to see the ability to change the page number of a linked pdf in the links palette - as it stands you have to relink file, click 'show import options' (which then remains on when you don't want it to) navigate to the pdf then click through what page you want to display. It's slow and clunky. A simple icon next to the link where you could select the desired page would speed my workflow up massively.

Custom Stroke Styles
inDesign has a number of Easter Eggs in the stroke styles: Woof, Rainbow, Rasta, Happy, and Lights. So obviously there is a way to create custom stroke styles, but it is locked and inaccessible. Please let us import our own vector objects into the stroke styles panel.
