Book numbering options in one panel
Please streamline book numbering options into one panel. It's beyond aggravating to go from Layout -> Numbering & Section Options, then to the Book Panel -> Update Numbering and fumble around with that until you get it right. If the suggested panel had a "Preview" box as well, you could preview your changes until you get your desired result.

Allow special characters to be added in front of note number when importing footnotes (e.g., tabs).
The "prefix" option for "document footnote options" should allow that, but only permits the few options in the pulldown menu. We should be able to insert any character before or after the footnote text.

To add an option to add a customized numbering format.
Is there the feature to add a customized numbering format? I do not think InDesign has thus I would like to request the feature. There are several languages in the world and their own alphabets. As there are already created numbering formats such as "a, b, c,...." that falls under English alphabets under 'Bullets and Numbering', there should be the feature to create such numbering format as per the alphabets of other languages too. Thanks.

XML structures and footnotes/endnotes
This is a point which was subject of lot of discussion since years in several forums. Even this uservoice mentions it (partly) sometime but obviously it hasn't been considered at all.
In InDesign, a footnote can't contain xml structures.
In InDesign, it is not possible to map an xml element to the footnote object.
This is really weird, since:
a) mapping XML element to an InDesign object is something exiting already for tables thanks to attribute aid:table. So why not having set an attribute aid:note, with values "footnote" and "endnote" and implementing this?
b) footnotes and endnotes…42 votesThanks for reporting the issue.
We will review it shortly.-InDesign Team

Page Numbering "Don't Include in Page Numbering" Option
I use INDD for proposals that include covers and tabs. Right now, it's pretty cumbersome to get the cover and tabs to not be included in the page count. Currently, you have to restart the number at a specific interval based on where the tabs are at and change your cover and tabs pages to include a Section Prefix as to not duplicate page numbers, so it's a little tedious. So my first three pages are called A1 A2 and A3...then 1 2...then B3 (for tab 1)...then 3 4 5 etc. Can we just have a "check box" under Numbering…

Make break line possible to numbering
When creating a numbered list, I would be able to force a break line after the numbering, as we are able to put tab or spacings

Add numbering page option: set single number for facing pages
Please add an option to number two facing pages like one. For example: normal numbering 1, 2, 3, 4. With new option p. 1 (1 and 2), page 2 (3 and 4). Thanks

"Create Outlines" should automatically "convert bullets and numbering to text" first.
Currently you have to remember to select "Convert bullets and numbering to text" before you also select "Create Outlines." This should not be a two part process as there would never be a time when a designer would suddenly want the bullets and numbers to disappear when making outlined text for a printer.

Spread numbering confuses clients
When publishing spreads, numbering is for spreads spread 1, 2 ,3 etc but paging in document is different. This confuses clients and spreads should be numbered as pages page 1, page 2-3, page 4-5 etc.

Table numbering for multipage tables
Need to repeat table numbering on every page of very long tables.
The publisher requires this type of table layout. The last page of the table should begin with the line "End of Table 1.1", all pages, starting from the second and up to the penultimate page should begin with the line "Continuation of Table 1.1". Now we have to do this by inserting an additional text frame on each page with a long table or an additional master page, but in the case of moving tables, we have to spend a lot of extra time

Using Unicode Indic Devnagri Script Font for Automatic Page Numbering & Numbered Lists / Paragraphs,
Hello Team, I am from India, and obviously we have to work majority of the times with Unicode Devnagri Script Fonts, (I prefer to use the Adobe Devnagri Unicode standard fonts )
Then Major problem / issue while using Automatic Page Numbering & Numbered Lists / Paragraphs, is even though we apply the Devanagari script on the Page Number on Master Pages, the auto numbering still shows the ENGLISH Script in the same font, the same goes for the Numbered Lists
And it looks very odd when we have a List Typed in Devnagari script but its numbered in English…

Chapter Number in ToC Numbering
I'm working with a long document and it really does not make sense to use section numbering so that I can insert a prefix to page numbers (and that has to be done manually for each section anyway). Why are there not building blocks for the ToC or at the least, the ability to insert a variable?

Footnotes from text that has been placed from a Word doc should flow continuously, so they can have numbering applied to them
When importing a document from Word that has footnotes, the footnotes are entered as separate imbedded text frames which I can't thread. If I try to apply numbering, they each are numbered 1. This is really frustrating. The footnotes should not be separated out into individual text frames, to keep them in the same text frame as paragraphs within the same text frame, or they should be allowed to be threaded.

Improve handling of long footnotes
Handling of long footnotes could be improved in at least three ways:
- Sometimes a footnote absolutely cannot start on the same page as its reference either because the given footnote follows so closely behind a very long footnote (or a dense cluster of shorter footnotes). Presently, InDesign simply stops setting text at that point, as it would when a hits a word it cannot fit into any subsequent frame in the story. Ideally such footnotes would be not only be permitted but be custom-labelable—e.g. “(from p. 17)”—but for now simply permitting such footnotes, elegantly or not,…

Differentiate and provide options for Section Numbering and Absolute Numbering when Inserting a Page Number
Currently, if a document is divided into different numbering sections, there is no way to provide a page number for the page's location in the overall document (absolute page number). This could be remedies by providing additional options. Ideally, the new workflow for creating page numbers would be:
Insert Special Character >
Markers >
Current Page Number >
Section Number / Absolute Number1 vote -
Footnotes
If you have a text with two or more columns the footnotes appear in the same column. That's great but it would be much nicer if you could have the footnotes under the colums ans as wide as both/all columns together. At the moment the efford to get this is very high and I have to use additional text boxes and I loose the connection between number in the text and footnote.

automatic numbering according to the position in the dokument
The automatic numbering by means of a list should have the following function:
Numbering according to position in the document
That means for example, the numbering is done in ascending order from top to bottom and from left to right.
At the moment the numbering only follows in the order in which it was inserted. This is very inflexible, especially when adding images with associated numbered labels.1 vote
