Create linked text boxes and assign different colors for text in each text box.
Hello,
I would like to be able to create linked text boxes and assign different colors for text in each text box. The linked text boxes can have different background colors. You can create it manually by selecting text and changing its color, but what if an editor removes or adds a paragraph? If in box A background was white and text was black, and in box B background was black and text white, then if a paragraph in box A was removed, text from box B (white) will move to box A and will become invisible in box A…2 votes -

Text Variables in Floating Window/Pod
Text Variables needs a dockable window/panel/pod. Pull defining new variables out of the Text menu and put it in a panel that we can access without having to drill down through the UI.
Having Text Variables available in a panel in this fashion would let us place the cursor, double-click to add a variable, move the cursor via arrows and double-click the next variable. We would also be able to click several variable in a row without having the laboriously drill down through the UI to get to the list. This is very frustrating when you have several dozen variables…

Scaling with conditional text
When scaling a text box allow all hidden conditional text to scale. As of now only the visible text scales. This is extremely inconvenient when working with a lot of conditional text,

Apply parent pages based on text
I would like the ability to force a page to use a Parent Page based on the content of that page.
For example, a long document might have several chapters and the chapter title or chapter number uses a specific paragraph style. That style could include an attribute to apply a specific Parent Page to the page the text appears on, allowing the designer to automatically select the chapter start parent where appropriate. As the text reflows the parent would be removed or reapplied as the text moves from page to page.
Sometimes a paragraph might span a page break,…

Trim dimension text variable
Client: “THIS IS THE WRONG SIZE!”
Designer: “But I put the trim dimension text variable in the slug area! Oh, right. There is no trim dimension text variable.”

vertical text wrap
Currently, if you have text center aligned (horizontally) when wrapping, the text stays centered between the end of the next box and the wrapping object. This should happen in the vertical as well, but currently doesn't.
If there is text above a wrapping object, and the text is vertically center aligned, the text will either not move (if the wrapping object is lower than the text would end) or it will stay flush with the wrap.
In my case, the fact the vertical doesn't work the same way as the horizontal makes it extremely difficult to design with…

Smart Text Reflow + Data Merge
When using Data Merge, if text is too long to fit on the standard 2-page Master page spread, then InDesign should automatically create additional pages (either by repeating the Master spread, or allowing Master spreads to consist of more than 2 pages) utilizing Smart Text Reflow to continue the text thread instead of oversetting the text.
My personal use case: I am working with a teacher at a university to create a literature magazine, and need to compile multiple long-form submissions into one document. Since up to 200 students could be submitting work, it is important that this can…
5 votesHave you tried using the Primary Text Frame to accomplish this? Using Primary Text Frame allows automatic creation of additional pages/deleting empty pages.

Inline graphic text wrap
I'm a long time InDesign user but am baffled by the inline graphic options currently offered. That ID ignores text wrap settings of the pasted graphic is counter-intuitive, the need to place a paragraph causes unwanted spaces between paragraphs (should the graphic not extend to the full width of the text block), and the visual "anchor object" and "anchor position" options has the graphic jump all over the place without reflecting the usual anchor point behavior I expect. Thank you.

Threading Text
Add an option for threading text that once you've started the process you can just click ANYWHERE in the box to keep threading. It's very difficult to find that tiny red box in the corner when you want to thread 30+ boxes.

Lock text passages e.g. legal texts
We have a lot of texts for legal reasons in our sales brochure. Like somewhere in between. Now we have a workaround to put these texts at the end of a page at the same spot in every brochure but while editing it often happens that e.g. by accident parts of the texts get erased.
It would be so helpful to lock important parts of the text but keep them in the whole text "fluently" at the same time. It doesnt matter where the text is but it has to be there.
I hope I described my…4 votes -
Snap to frame edges/layers
In Photoshop, there are very robust options for snapping to guides, grids, layers, document bounds, etc. each of which can be turned on and off individually.
In InDesign, snapping is much more limited and it is only possible to snap to guides. This means that whenever snapping is desired, guides must be created, which is an extra step that could be streamlined by expanding snapping options to be more like Photoshop.

Import a multipage PDF into existing graphic frames
I need to be able to set up a document with graphic frames, then import a multipage PDF using a script which places each page into each frame. When the script encounters a page not containing a frame, it will miss it out and place into the next available frame.

Need to View and Edit Alt Text in InCopy
As an editor I need to be able to preview Alt text for Images and also edit that Alt Text if needed. Currently I need to go to Indesign to do that.

Text from a paragraph style used in a variable does not carry any character styling
Text from a paragraph style used in a variable does not carry any character styling.
Define a variable using the text of a specific paragraph style. Add character styles to the text (or use a GREP style) and when the text is
pulled" by the variable the character style is not reflected.Often this is used for running headers and footers. Example: if the registered trademark symbol is added to the text, it is regular case in the variable.
This also really screws up the ToC when the paragraph style is used in a ToC

Sequential frames
Having more options for frames to make them sequential, for instance if I have 20 text frames for 20 files or pages instead of clicking to insert into each frame if we were able to number them or perhaps a checkbox when creating them to create sequential ones, so that when we click the first one it automatically places the following pages or files into the next frames. Kind of like how you link text boxes to continue the text except with the frames.

Paragraph shading (and borders) should be able to clip/inset based on the text box
Paragraph shading extends outside of the text box. This is especially annoying when shaded text spans over multiple pages (see screenshot: AutoShading.png). It would be great if it could automatically clip and inset based on the text box—see screenshot: HowItShouldLook.png. The current solutions I can think of are really messy and easily negated.

Paragraph Border Controls when Split across Columns or Frames
There needs to be a control that "If paragraph breaks between columns or frames" restricts the paragraph border to: "baseline" , "cap-height" and perhaps a value offset for this. At the very least there needs to be the "clip to frame" option for paragraph border like there is for paragraph shading. However, the controls for baseline and cap-height would be ideal.
