Variable Font Custom Weights Not Available
InDesign 19.1. I recently installed a new variable font from Monotype (https://www.myfonts.com/collections/unitext-variable-font-monotype-imaging). When using the slider to adjust the weight variable, the font breaks and defaults to the regular weight.
The same font works fine on Illustrator. Other variable fonts on InDesign (e.g. Acumin Variable) also work fine, so the issue seems to be tied to this specific font and InDesign only.

Variable font sliders are laggy
Variable font sliders are much less smooth in InDesign, compared to Illustrator. They are much laggier.
Attached is a screen recording of the Acumin variable font being used in Illustrator (top) and InDesign (bottom).

Variable Font not working in InDesign 2020
We came along a severe bug within InDesign 2020 and Variable Font.
These Blog Posts are describing it quite well:

and:
https://forum.glyphsapp.com/t/variable-fontz-in-indesign/13032Illustrator and Photoshop do not have this bug.

Please update to either of these versions of InDesign to get the fix.—

Variable font doesn't...vary.
I just installed the new Macklin variable fonts from Monotype. They work as expected in Illustrator, and the "regular" cut works as expected in InDesign. However, the Macklin Sans font dosen't work well in InDesign: the prebuilt weights are functional, but when one varies the axis sliders, they seem to have no effect. Bug in the font or in InDesign?

2021 variable font not printing
InDesign 2021 v 16.0 when I use the Acumin Variable Concept font in any style it doesn't print. I have no errors on the document just blank boxes where the text would be.

Variable font not working in Indesign.
Problem:
Variable font not working in Indesign.
Main problems with Monotype Helvetica Neue Variable, but sometimes others also cause problems.
(Note: via my Myfonts I received a new font-file and installed this - same problems - so it is not the font file which is broken…)
I discovered that the program/software/app Indesign itself is causing this problem - not only the variable function does not work any more - as soon as I try to use the variable function the whole document is not working properly: can't save, cant undo, etc !!!

variable font bugging out in InDesign
I am using General Sans variable font in Indesign which has not stopped working properly after packaging the document and prepping it to print.
Some areas of the font are showing as Italics even though they are not and should not be and there is no way to change them.
After researching it looks like variable fonts are not ready to be used in all Adobe programs for a seamless process.

PDF issue with WorkSans variable font
I'm getting a strange issue with the WorkSans static variable font when exporting a PDF. The font is from Google Fonts -- https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Work+Sans. The weight in the attached example is WorkSans Black. A strange overlap issue is happening in the crossbar of the A. The issue only seems to be occurring in that letterform. The only way I can seem to resolve this is by converting the font to outlines in InDesign, which is not ideal.

Variable Font Italic Slider Not Working Correctly
Adobe InDesign ver.19.0.1
The variable weight for CC Regeneration (distributed through Adobe Fonts) is not working correctly in InDesign. The italic slider is not adjusting all data points correctly and the capital "I" glyph is not affected at all.
The variable font works correctly in Illustrator.2 votes -
2021 variable font repeatedly unavailable causing InDesign to freeze
In InDesign (version 17.0.1), I am using Acumin Variable, which initially shows up with no issues. However, InDesign begins freezing and minutes later, a pop up notification says the variable font is unavailable. This has been on-going and other designers I collaborate with are experiencing the same problem with this font.

InDesign 18.3 Arabic variable font bug (MacOS)
In an Arabic variable font it is not possible to apply the font variation to a single glyph without breaking the shaping. In Illustrator 27.5 the expected behaviour (variation of an individual glyph without breaking shaping) works.

variable font using no font style after PDF export for fillable form
When using a variable Font (Acumin from Adobe Fonts) for a text field in a fillable form it isn't using any font style when exported to PDF.
Static fonts act as expected.

Variable Font (Source Sans 3) some Characters not available
macOS Ventura 13.5.2 (22G91), InDesign 19.0
Since the update to Indesign 2024 (or version 19.0), some letters can no longer be selected in bold or black for the variable version of the font "Source Sans 3". When adjusting the slider, they become thinner again (instead of thicker) from a weight of 600. It affects e.g. the small a, e and l, but not the i, s... etc. they are also not displayed in the glyphs. With font weights below 600 (up to and including semibold) everything works fine (variable and with font weights). This applies to both the TT-version…5 votes -
Variable fonts broken with World Ready Paragraph Composer
Using the World-ready composer essentially breaks the glyph width interpolation of Variable Fonts. The outcome is that text set in a Variable Font will receive the Variable Font's default style's horizontal glyph widths for any axis location, resulting in unusable overlap or gaps.
Attached you find a sample Indesign file with comparison and a screenshot thereof. This happens with any Variable Font I have tested so var, but to complete the same test case as included, download https://github.com/adobe-fonts/source-sans-pro/releases/download/3.006R/source-sans-pro-3.006R.zip and install VAR/SourceSansVariable-Roman.otf as well as OTF/*.otf files.

Variable Fonts: Align Stroke to Center shows overlaps
When using variable fonts, the Align Stroke to Center shows the overlaps in letters with live text (not good). If I use Align Stroke to Outside the overlaps arenʻt shown with live text (good) but once I use Type > Create Outlines the overlaps are shown (not good).
This happens in many variable fonts, for example Source Code VF Concept (see screenshot attached), but also true with my own variable fonts and those from other type foundries.
With the non-variable font version, the Stroke looks good in all settings mentioned here. The variable font version should…

Variable font changes to Italic when a custom axis value is set, without user input. Also, the Italic axis cannot be controlled.
This may be related to a somewhat similar Illustrator bug:
https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/46249144-variable-font-changesSummary:
1. Variable fonts that have separate but related roman/italic font files are handled badly by InDesign (and Illustrator). In InDesign, if you set a custom axis value such as Weight or Optical Size, the font changes to Italic immediately. This issue occurs in fonts such as Roboto Serif and Apple SF Pro, which are well-tested, popular, and important by many measures. It also occurs in fonts that have internal data that is known to be good, at least as far as …6 votes -
variable weight font issues - STILL with 20.1
Re-posting this issue with more screen shots. Variable weight fonts will work 50% of the time. The other 50% of the time, they do not and give you incorrect output or unusable output, with no error warnings. This example had the first PDF output substitute the blocky serif font Bitter with another font, without any warnings or errors. The second PDF output has the correct font, but the letter forms have issues at the vertices, which make them untrappable. Converting them to outlines and then merging the path objects is the only way to get correct outlines…
