InDesign 2020 won't overwrite PDF
Since updating to Indesign 2020 I can't overwrite pdf files from the export menu it says 'file is still open' when it's not. Yet another thing broken on the yearly beta test.
Fix for this issue is now available in the latest update of InDesign 2020 – that is, InDesign 15.0.1
In the Creative Cloud Desktop application, click on the Updates section on the left. You should be able to see the Update available for InDesign. Please update your InDesign application to this version to try out the fix.
Let us know in the comments section if you face any problem with the updation process.

It says "Fixed in 15.0.1" But where is it??? Search for updates says I'm up to date yet I do not have it??
I have the same problem here. At least it's possible to re-name the old file (I add "delete" at the end) and usually a day or two later it's possible to delete it.
But this is absolutely an issue that needs to be solved.
Problème identique chez nous, et ce malgré le téléchargement des dernières versions.
C'est terriblement ennuyeux.
Des pistes pour régler le problème ?
This still isn't fixed. It doesn't fail all the time, but every now and then for no known reason Indesign will just toss an error and fail to generate/overwrite for an existing PDF. The messaging isn't very helpful either... it just says "failed to generate PDF."
Annoying it also destroys the original file in the process... the file simply "vanishes"... not in the trash. It's as though the file ceased to exist entirely. Super annoying.
same here, company version - saving on desktop is ok - but can't overwrite server data
same here, 'InDesign is up to date and I'm still having this problem'
Yep, my InDesign is up to date and I'm still having this problem.
ALSO HAVING THIS ISSUE!!!! Seems to be just illustrator.
This problem just started for me. It says it's overwriting the PDF, but does not. It does overwrite when a copy with the same name is physically dragged into the folder. Adding this step to the process is NOT ideal.
I am running 15.0.1

I have the latest version and just got the same error again today. The PDF is not open anywhere and has been closed for 20 minutes. I do not have time to regularly close ID in order to reset this feature. What can I do?
The problem is back. It worked for a month
it's still a problem. Indesign 15.0.1 did not help. Mac OS.
Mac OS. After update to 126.96.36.199 we still have the same problem to overwrite PDFs on SMB shares. InDesign seems to hold the exported PDF open until you fully close InDesign.
I've updated to 15.0.1 as well and still have the same issue. I can overwrite a PDF that's been there for a while, but not one that was just recently created.

From The Netherlands: It seems to work very well!
2019 seemed to have been updated, but 2020 (15.01) is now working as it should. Thanks!
I just updated to InDesign 15.0.1 and it is still doing the same thing. Same message. If there is a PDF in the folder you can not over write it.
