InDesign 2020 won't overwrite PDF
Since updating to Indesign 2020 I can't overwrite pdf files from the export menu it says 'file is still open' when it's not. Yet another thing broken on the yearly beta test.
Fix for this issue is now available in the latest update of InDesign 2020 – that is, InDesign 15.1.2
In the Creative Cloud Desktop application, click on the Updates section on the left. You should be able to see the Update available for InDesign. Please update your InDesign application to this version to try out the fix.

This issue is still present in InDesign 2024. Seems to only happen when saving files to an SMB share. When saving files locally there are no issues.
Probably in a related note, I also have to open my files 10-20 times because InDesign keeps opening them as read-only.

There is something that I noticed in this issue. If I have the file selected in my Finder (Mac) window, then the system thinks it's opened and won't overwrite. I need to select a different file or folder and then it will overwrite the file.
This helped in some cases, not all.

This issue seems to be present at my new employer machines in 2023. Seems like it may be more of an Acrobat issue than InDesign issue, but I'm not sure. Keeps telling me that the file is open, when I want to save update in Acrobat, but I know it is not.
Very frustrating and time consuming to save as a different name, delete the original file, then rename new file back to original name, just because it won't let me overwrite. Any suggestions?
Working on server setup at work, PC-based Creative Cloud version that is fully updated.

I agree, I've been having this issue endlessly for the last few weeks. Windows 10, all updates installed. Local machine not server based. Cleared preferences, uninstalled and reinstalled... keeps happening. Please help!

This is STILL an issue.

This is still an issue - a very frustrating issue to still be battling with. It seems as though it gets corrected and then something happens (other updates, I assume) and it starts happening again.

Thanks for reminding me that this issue has been fixed. You guys already sent me an email last December stating so. Did the issue come back?

Weird, this problem went away for me ages ago, probably in December 2019. I'm almost afraid to install an update on the off chance it'll return.

This would perhaps seem to be an Acrobat issue. If I quit Acrobat then the correct file shows.

This doesn't seem to be fixed at all.

It says "Fixed in 15.0.1" But where is it??? Search for updates says I'm up to date yet I do not have it??

I have the same problem here. At least it's possible to re-name the old file (I add "delete" at the end) and usually a day or two later it's possible to delete it.
But this is absolutely an issue that needs to be solved. -

Problème identique chez nous, et ce malgré le téléchargement des dernières versions.
C'est terriblement ennuyeux.
Des pistes pour régler le problème ? -

This still isn't fixed. It doesn't fail all the time, but every now and then for no known reason Indesign will just toss an error and fail to generate/overwrite for an existing PDF. The messaging isn't very helpful either... it just says "failed to generate PDF."
Annoying it also destroys the original file in the process... the file simply "vanishes"... not in the trash. It's as though the file ceased to exist entirely. Super annoying.
