  1. footnotes saving space

Can we make the footnotes text in 2 to 4 column, or run-in footnotes, because some books has too many footnotes, if a 3 or 4 word note occupies a line so we loose space. This will save space in long text books.

  2. [ID-4261542] Text variables to include auto numbers

When creating a text variable, it would be great to have it capture the auto numbering, e.g. if the heading is "1. Introduction" and the number is set as an auto number to the paragraph style, then the text variable that references that paragraph style should also pick up the number. At the moment, all you get from the text variable is "Introduction". Or at least have that as an option!

  3. Textboxes for footnotes

Let the user place footnotes in a textfield, for example in the marginaliia.

  4. Endnote citation order

Looking to expand the scope of endnotes and footnote to include multiple stories in a document so that the citation order follows reference where it falls on the page, not just a single story.

  5. Page numbering

Provide an easy application of styles to include zero as a second digit. For example, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 etc.

  6. Absolute page numbers as a text variable

I propose adding "Absolute Page Number" as a text variable. Similar to Last Page Number, "Absolute Page Number" would allow the document creator to place the absolute page number of the layout onto a page while also using another page numbering system (sections, roman numerals, etc.).

With long documents now both being used in whole or separated into parts by clients, this would allow InDesign users to fulfill the issue of having a page carry two numbering schemes at the same time.

  7. Better numbering of Exported pages

Once in a while, we need to animate pages of a brochure, or make end credits with more typographic features than After Effects allows.

When exporting pages from InDesign (e.g. as .jpg), those are numbered:
    Name.jpg
    Name2.jpg
    ...
    Name9.jpg
    Name10.jpg
    etc.

This results in a list of files that, when sorted/imported in alphabetical order, are not in the right order.

It would be nice, when the names are like this:
    Name00.jpg
    Name01.jpg
    ...
    Name09.jpg
    Name10.jpg

Even better would be when InDesign allows us to make a template for the output name, so we can decide ourselves how the sequential files…

  8. Static Endnotes

I need a possibility to turn off the automatic endnote function that appears in InDesign CC 2018. It may be practical for some applications, but it greatly impedes the flexibility of many designs. Can someone tell me if this is possible – the endnotes don't need to be dynamic for my purposes. The way they were imported when placing a Word document in ID CC 2017 was fine.
Richt now, the only way I know to work around it is to use Peter Kahrel's footnote to endnote script.

  9. Please add a way within a book file to update all document's tables-of-contents.

Please add a way within a book file to update all document's tables-of-contents.

Right now, when I make a change to one document that changes page numbering, I must manually go update the TOC of every document in the book individually. This feature could easily be added to the same "Update Numbering" command within a book document.

  10. Include chapter number in index

I'd like to include the chapter number as prefix for the page numbers in the index.

    Background:
I have a book with 60 documents. Each document has another chapter number and page numbering restarts in every document at 1. The chapter number is separately styled, so that it is an eyecatcher.

The index for the whole book is placed in document 1. For a useful index I need the chapter numbers!

    My current workaround is:
Before I update the index I enable the option "Include section prefix in page numbering" in EVERY document. Then I update my index and…

  11. Footnotes -- align to bottom of page

I have struggled for hours and searched everything I can find to learn if Adobe has EVER YET come up with a method to align footnotes to the exact bottom of a page or text frame. Mine ride a little high here, a little low there, depending on various things happening in the main text, so that I can't get a consistent align-to-bottom and always must deal with this. CONSIDER THIS. When inserting a footnote, automatically create a separate text frame that can then be manipulated -- its alignment set to bottom, for instance. Now, THAT seems a…

  12. Paragraph Style Option Dialogue Box - Bullets and Numbering

We had to change the font we're using for a checkbox in one of our paragraph styles. We have it set up under Paragraph Style Options / Bullets and Numbering. To add a character you want to use for a bullet character, you click add. There is no way to sort glyphs (by math symbols, greek, etc.) in the next window, and there are no scroll buttons. You have to grab the handle on the screen and scroll, and it jumps so fast, you can't navigate from one screen to the next. It just took me 20 minutes to…

  13. Allow import of endnotes as plain text

I have to be honest. The footnote / endnotes automation in Indesign is a complete failure. I absolutely HATE it!!! Please, allow me to turn this feature off, and import endnotes as plain text in the same text flow as the article. Seriously, the addition of the automated endnotes feature has damaged my relationship with Adobe. It is just terrible.

  14. Split and even out footnotes in a two column layout

We work on academic books, and academics love footnotes. When working with a two-column layout, the footnotes of each column appear at the bottom of that column. So far so good. But when there are a lot of footnotes things get messy, one column can be 50% filled with footnotes and the column next to it can have only 1-2 lines of footnotes (or even none). This doesn't look particularly nice.

We are wondering if there is a way to even them out?

I know it is possible to set the footnotes in one-column,…

  15. Great new palettes

I like Adobe add great features to InDesign:
1- Ligature Manager: to enable \disable specific ligature(s) in a document, since Unicode and opentype revolutionized the typography abilities.
2- Kerning Manager: to enable \disable specific kerning pairs in a document, since many non-latin font metrics are badly calculated.
3- Equation Editor: for maths, chemistry… etc.
4- Footnote Improvement: to enable user to add marginal footnotes, put footnote in columns… etc.
Very Much Thanks to Adobe Brains.

  16. Adds the option to create sidenotes on Indiesign

Adding a built-in option to create side-notes in Indiesign, such comments that come next to the text where they are numbered. In addition, there will be control over whether to insert a separator between them and the main text, as well as control of the numbering style, and the paragraph or character style applied to them. Adding or subtracting one comment will update the number and position of the other comments, and if one comment goes beyond the page boundaries - move its content to the next page.
Also, the designer should be given the choice of three options -…

  17. Allow footnotes to renumber in same document

When importing a Word document with footnotes or endnotes that are continuous, add feature to begin renumbering footnotes from 1 for each chapter or section. It does not work in the current versions of InDesign CC even with the preferences set to renumber with each new section when the text file is linked from section to section.

  18. Need a Tab with GREP/Style Change setting instead of just decimal

SHORT DESCRIPTION: A new type of tab which will accept multiple align characters in a GREP-like statement and/or align on a style change.

The video provides a longer description. In tables involving figures and footnotes, a decimal tab is often not enough. What if the footnote is a number, or the footnote is surrounded by parenthesis? These are things which our clients specify for tables in the financial reporting industry, but apply to other industries as well.

If we could specify multiple characters to align upon, in a GREP-like "or" statement, that would help. Or the ability to align…

  19. Make column rules continue in footnotes

If you have a text frame with multiple columns and the footnotes split into columns, the column rules do not continue in the footnotes.

  20. Table numbering and easier cross-reference/text anchor setup in tables

It would be nice to be able to automatically number a specific row by just pressing a button, instead of using the "End Nested Style Here" command and copying/pasting in the following rows. It would also be nice if the corresponding column would read the number and be able to set up a text anchor for a paragraph number cross-reference.
