InDesign 2023 (18.0) Screen not refreshing
Half the time or more, page down/up and zoom do not refresh the screen. Attempting to select something just draws the rectangle around nothing. Finally through a variety of erratic body movements, thrashing and random gestures, ID wakes up. This is a huge step backward from v17. Productivity severely hampered.

Hyperlink alt text is ignored in the latest version of Indesign
When creating or editing a hyperlink there is an option to add alt text. If you add alt text to your link and export an accessible PDF the alt text is ignored. I have a document with a ton of hyperlinks that all need alt text which we have added but don't come through because of this bug. Now I'm forced to add them again to the PDF.
19 votesAccording to the ISO-32000, the Hyperlinks are NOT supposed to be populated into the Alt-Text field. They should be entered into the Contents Key (see attachment) instead.
InDesign currently does place them in the correct place [see screenshot attached].
While someone using Acrobat can also add them to the Alt-text field, this is technically less correct than entering into the Contents key but either will pass an Accessibility checker.InDesign implemented this correctly based on the above information (provided by Accessibility experts, like Dax Castro, thanks Dax).

We completed the investigation and came up with the following: Either the issue has been resolved in the most recent release of InDesign (Refer to InDesign Release notes), the issue was intermittent at the time of reporting and is no longer reproducible, or the InDesign version mentioned in the report is no longer covered by Creative Cloud Support Policy.
We would recommend you upgrade to the latest version as it is more robust. Refer to Share InDesign documents for review to easily share your InDesign documents with collaborators for feedback and review. If you are still facing this issue even after updating it Contact Adobe support.

Links export to PDF creates "Null Alt Text" attribute in tagged PDF
When an ID 15 file with hyperlinks is exported to Tagged PDF, unless you assign alternative text to the Links in ID, the Link tags will have a "null text" attribute which prevents the content of the Link tag from being read by a screen reader. This is a problem for several reasons. Not everyone chooses to add alternative text to hyperlinks. It's a UA, but not a WCAG 2 requirement. An automated accessibility checker like Acrobat's or even PAC is not going to flag this. Most people do not do a "Jaws check" of the PDF they are remediating and will never know that the links are not "reading."
Also, if you have a Figure which is hyperlinked the proper structure for that in a 508 compliant PDF is to place the Figure tag inside the Link tag and assign alternative text to the Figure tag not the link tag. Now with the null text Link tags, THIS will produce a "nested link" error from the Acrobat Checker. The nested alternative text for the Figure will not be read. Unfortunately, many people attempting to make 508 PDFs are unaware of what "null alt text" is and will have a devil of a time trying to resolve the error.
So, instead of making PDF remediation easier with this new feature in ID you have made things worse!
Ideally if no alternative text is entered in Indesign there should be no Alt text attribute of any kind in the Link Tag in the PDF.
I've attached several files so you can see what this looks like in the Tags panel, but to truly understand it you should try to "read" the attached PDF using a screen reader like Jaws or NVDA.

Variable Fonts don't display correct via PDF export
I'm very excited to see variable fonts in InDesign, thank you!
However, when using variable fonts in an InDesign document, exported PDFs show overlaps (as in the crossbar of /A), as well as inconsistent stem weights, spacing, and alignments in various glyphs. These issues occur in multiple variable fonts I've tested.
If I use static fonts or convert fonts to outlines using Type > Create Outlines these issues don't show up. These issues are present when viewing PDFs in both Acrobat and Preview (see screenshots attached). These variable fonts work fine in web browsers and other applications that support variable fonts (FontView etc).
Please fix this so that PDFs which contain live type show up the same as those where Type > Convert Outlines is used. Thank you.

Color theme tool pop-up window unable to be closed
I'm running Adobe Indesign 14.0.1
To recreate, select the color theme tool and click anywhere on a placed image, a small horizontal color theme menu pops up with five swatches and a few other buttons to the right of the swatches, and then never goes away. Ever. There is no option to hide or close the window and while I appreciate having a palette to pick from on my screen, I went with my own palette for this project and the color theme tool was unnecessary. There needs to be some way to hide or close this small window that pops up, like other toolbars that are able to be closed by clicking an X button somewhere on the pop-up, or under the window toolbar and checking and unchecking to toggle visibility.

Bad optical kerning for superscript "4"
When a superscript "4" follows a closing smart quotation mark, optical kerning is set to -60 or -70 depending on font. This is too close (basically a crash).
This is annoying for books with lots of endnotes, where superscript numbers usually follow quotation marks.

Data Merge not populating fields CC2019
I use Data Merge for variable data production every day. I am using IDCC2019 v14.0.1. iMac 27 inch late 2013. OS High Sierra 10.13.6. Processor 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5. 16 GB memory.
This problem started with IDCC2019. I link to .csv for data merge. When exporting to PDF, I choose a record range – for example 1-1000. In the PDF result, the first page is not the first record. It is a random record in the middle – for example, 319. It merges records 319-1000. Then the remaining pages of the 1000 page output are not populated – in the PDF, it will have only the placeholders, such as <<Name>> <<Address>>. This happens sporadically but frequently. I cannot say a similar problem never occurred with an earlier version of ID, but I do not remember ever having this precise problem before CC2019. To clarify – it successfully merges many of the records, but starts with a random record in the middle, not the first. Then the unpopulated records are at the end of the PDF output, and I am missing the records that should have been at the beginning. It is very strange. I cannot provide steps to reproduce the problem because it is a random ocurrence. For starters I would just like to know if anyone else has experienced this same problem. Thank you in advance.

Non-Printing Layers in Italics
InDesign no longer italicizes the name of non-printing layers in the layers panel. This made a scan of which layers were printing or non-printing quick and easy.
With the 2018 update, it seems like non-printing layer names just display as a SLIGHTLY lighter weight of the standard layer name type, making it hard to tell which layers are doing what at a glance.
An update that clearly demarcates non-printing layers would be appreciated.

Hyphenation settings see note references as a character
Hypenation settings consider a note reference as a character, so if you have a footnote callout at the end of a word and hyphenation settings are set to "before last 3" it will make 2-letter hyphenation.

Data merge not working for absolute paths on macOS
With the latest update of 19.4, image paths no longer work for merge documents. I installed the latest update, which went back to 19.3, and have had no issues; therefore, I have isolated the issue with the update. I currently usean Excell file with an image field and the path to the image associated with each record. I have not changed anything in the file but with the new update I get the error message indicating the file is missing.
18 votesThe fix of the issue is now available in the latest InDesign 2024(v19.5.0.084). We recommend you upgrade to the latest version for the fix.
Kindly update the data source file with the POSIX style path in Macintosh to work with data merge functionality smoothly. Please refer to the helpx https://helpx.adobe.com/in/indesign/using/data-merge.html to know more about the difference between HFS and Posix style paths.
You can get the actual POSIX path of a file by right-click it in the Finder while holding Option (or right-click, then press Option) > Copy as pathname menu. This can help you explore the correct POSIX paths to ensure you're using them correctly.
Note: Relative path as such /<foldername>/<filename> is no longer supported after the fix, as it considers the starting “/” as an absolute path. Instead, the recommendation is to omit the starting “/” and use <foldername>/<filename> instead or any of the other existing ways to access the relative path like ./<foldername>/<filename>.
If you are unable to see the update, go to the Creative Cloud application and click on the context menu on the top right, and click on Check for App Updates.

Bug when editing link text when changes are tracked
There it a bug which occurs when the following takes place.
- Track changes is activated for a text frame in InDesign.
- A user adds text that will include a hyperlink.
(See Image1.)
- A second user creates the hyperlink in the text.
- This user also then makes a change to the text that contains the hyperlink.
(See Image2)
- If the ICML file is exported for editing in InCopy and then placed again into the document the formatting will change in the places where the original content was added - which follow the change in the text which contains the hyperlink. Depending on how this occurs text content can also be duplicated following the original text.
(See image3)
Image3 shows that the default hyperlink styling (blue with underlining) now extends to the end of the original text. The hyperlink itself also extends that far.
This will happen in any place where a change occurs in text containing a hyperlink that was originally added by another user. It is not likely to occur very often (due to the nature of the steps that need to occur in a specific order) however the results could very big problems if they are not caught.

M1 Mac Graphic Problems Continue
As others have mentioned InDesign graphic performance on M1 Macs is unacceptable. This was marked as "fixed" but it continues with macOS Ventura 13.0.1 and InDesign 18. For example, the screen does not always redraw when scrolling or jumping to a different page until you move your pointer. Switching to a different program and then back to InDesign also fixes the problem for a while. It doesn't matter whether GPU Performance is on or off. This is the most fundamental functionality. Please figure it out and fix it once and for all.

GREP position marker "^" = Beginning of Paragraph (not beginning of a new line after a forced line break)
Dear Support,
with the GREP position marker "^" for "Beginning of Paragraph", the GREP-search should consider the position of the beginning of a paragraph.
But this marker does not only recognize the beginning of a paragraph, but also the beginning of a new line after a forced line break (SHIFT-RETURN).This is not correct: A forced new line is not the beginning of a paragraph.
The only correct way would be to consider the beginning of a paragraph (RETURN).Sometimes you can use "(?=\r)\w+" to look for a word behind a Return instead of "^\w+" to find only the hits at the beginning of a paragraph. However, a combination with the search for a paragraph format can be disturbing here: with the lookbehind combined with a paragraph style only those places are found, where two consecutive paragraphs have the same paragraph style.
Please correct the effect of ^ to only beginning of paragraph (and not forced line break).

Exporting accessible PDF – wrong BoundingBox
InDesign Version: All
Background:
An accessible PDF needs for all graphics and pictures a bounding box.
This is used by AT e.g. to set a focus to a visual impaired user.
Using the PDF export a bounding box is defined for all linked images.Problem:
Often the bounding box does not fit to the visible area.
AT user get wrong information, in fact the file is not accessible.Steps to reproduce the issues:
Place an asset, where only a part of the linked asset is visibily placed in InDesign, the rest is cropped.Expected result:
Bounding box fits to visible areaActual result:
The bounding box is bigger than the visible area, if the assets content is bigger than the area show.Workaround:
You can fix this in Acrobat theoretically, but this is nor real workaround as you only edit values and dont have visual feedback.Attachement:
