Use the Articles tab to designate the reading order in a PDF
When creating an accessible PDF, InDesign should use the Articles Tab rather than the Layers Panel to structure the Reading Order. It reads properly but once you check the accessibility, the "Reading Order" panel shows a MESS. It's based on the Layers Panel which is madness to try and re-structure when creating a large form with hundreds of form fields. The Articles Panel is needed to set the tab order anyway. This would make the most sense to me.

Replace white background color with transparency
Quark X Press is able to replace the white background color of a placed TIFF image with transparency - this is the only feature I miss in InDesign.

lace Images Behind Text Without Outlines (Layers like Photoshop)
Description:
In Adobe InDesign, there is currently no option to place images behind text without converting the text to outlines or paths. In Photoshop, this is easily achieved using layer masks and clipping masks. It would be highly beneficial to have a similar feature in InDesign, allowing users to place images directly behind text that can still be edited (font, size, and content) without converting it to outlines.Benefits for Users:
Increased flexibility and efficiency when working with text and images
Ability to maintain the editability of the text (users can continue to adjust font, size, and wording)

Smart Layer Placement
Allow the designer to choose what kind of element belongs on the layer so that when assets are brought into the document they are automatically placed within the appropriate layer. For example, if the designer sets a layer to "Photography" then all raster-based imagery is automatically placed on that layer.
Other layer categories could be Type, Vector Art, Shapes (and by that I mean InDesign shapes), and more. Of course, once placed, the designer could then move elements to other layers as needed.
Additionally, if the document has already been created and elements have already been placed, then there could…

Multi-relinking with one click
In large projects like catalogues in different languages on own layers, I often have to relink a lot of identical signets (eps) with the appropriate ones in another language on another layer. Sadly it seems to be impossible to do that with one single click. I have to relink every single file separately. The command "Relink all instances …" only works at link folders but not on a group of selected links filtered with the layers in the links panel column. It would be great to relink only a selection of links of the same image with only one…

Allow designers to "group pages" for to provide easier re-organization
Similar to grouping layers in photoshop and illustrator or styles in INDD, you should provide the folder option inside the pages panel to "group pages" to make sections easier to reorder.

Find and replace also looks at Layer Names
I use layers for multiple versions and when modifying layer names (as a callout on the appropriate layer) would also like the Search and Replace Function to look at the layer names as well. Example - often same files are used from quarter to quarter and it is necessary to update the date on layer or a particular code included in the layer name.

Show All on Layer as well as Show All on Spread
There have been occasions where it would be useful to do this. Being able to hide certain elements on one layer and then elements on another layer but then be able to bring them back layer by layer without having to make new layers to put just these bits on then hiding the new layer.

interrupt the checking and reading of PSD, TIFF or other large embedded files
It took a good few minutes for my new computer to complete that process, and it would be worse for a older machine. Maybe we can have a option to cancel that process? InDesign froze in my old computer while waiting for these files to complete loading.

Make Layer Options work logically
In Layer Options we have the choice to Show the layer and/or Print the layer.
But when Print is unchecked, the layers doen's show either. Please make it possible to Show a layer, but don't print it. This comes in handy for guides / instructions or e.g. to visualize the window of an enveloppe.

Show which layer is printing in the slug area.
We often have to print specific layers to be sure our art is on the correct layer for printing. It would be especially helpful to us to see which layer is printed along with the page information.

Easy way to convert text to outline while exporting
Most of our printers still ask for fonts to be outlined.
Unfortunately the process to outline is very complicated and usually results in bullets, text box backgrounds and underline/over-lines disappearing. I also don't always want to flatten the whole document but simply rasterize the text. Especially when sending something to print that has different ink layers. Being able to outline text in the Export dialog box would be the best solution. This way I don't have to save a separate document or undo all my changes before saving so I retain my text in the Indd file.88 votes -
When you create a new layer, it should be selected
It doesn't make any sense to create a new layer and not have it selected. Obviously, if I'm creating a new layer, I want to put stuff on it. Make newly created layers selected automatically. For once, Illustrator gets this right and InDesign gets it wrong.

Changes to the tab order interface - make it work like layers pallet
It would be great if the tab order box that allows you to reorder their order could function like the layer pallet - allowing you to simply drag the order up and down as required while the document remains active.
This would allow complex interactive pdfs to have fields added and reordered with ease.

other default setting for layer options when placing PDFs
When placing a PDF, default setting for actualization is "keep user-defined visability ...".
Once switched to "keep PDFs visability ...", in the next document it is again on default "keep user-defined visability ..."
I would prefer to have "keep PDFs visability ..." as a stable default for placing.Example:
1. I added a new Layer to a PDF, but set it invisable by mistake.
2. On actualization, I accepted "new layers visible as in PDF".
3. Later, I remarked my mistake an repaired the PDF.
4. On actualization again, nothing got better ...I would prefer to know the PDFs…

one document multiple user
Allow different users to access the same document files simultaneously to edit. Like in CAD programms were you can lock layers or pages so you can have one project sharing file within your working group.

Same functionality for artboard import that Object Layer Styles has.
I use the Object Layer Styles feature (importing PSD and Ai files) very frequently, and it has saved so much time of not having to reimport a file over and over just to turn a different layer on.. However, if I want to show different artboards instead of different layers from a file, I have to reimport the file.

Eyedropper Tool and locked layers on top, theme tool
Hey, here is an idea; I have a layer with a photo and i have a layer with text on top. I lock the textlayer and select the eyedropper tool. I click on the photo and the colour is picked. Just like in illustrator...Wishfull thinking?
Here is another golden idea:
I have a photo of an interior, mostly brown- somewhat green and overal grey, but there is an amazing pop of yellow because there is one small flower on a painting.
I select the Colour Theme Tool, I zoom in on the flower, and click on it.

Option to search child folders when using Relink to Folder
Have a checkbox that tells indesign to also search child folders when using the "Relink to Folder" feature. To keep it from searching too far, you could also include a box to specify how many "layers" down to check.
