Different line lengths with paragraph shading
Paragraph shading is great but even if you choose to set it to text instead of column, the length of each line is the same for all lines of the paragraph (the longest one). It would be great to have the ability to set it according to the length of each line. For now, you have to use paragraph rules wit a hard return at the end of each line.

Search QR Codes when Finding/Replacing
I'm not sure if this is categorized correctly, but it would be nice if we are searching to fix text in a document that it also search and replace text that is used in QR codes so they don't get missed and are more easily fixed.

a better way to make texts on circle or other form path (spline) for pictogrammes
when you have to do it but make a way to have it the most editable way because you have to make it to a lot of different languages. Maybe be a more efficient way with rules on path to automatically inverse it and center it on the center of the path and maybe an option to what part of the text is on one side and what part is on another actually if i do it correctly you often need two path one for top one for bottom part of circular text and when you whant to change one…

Paragraph styles for masters
You should be able to create a blank text box on a master and assign it a paragraph style. Then when you edit a document page based on that master, the text should be formatted according to the paragraph style. It does this already, for the creation of the page. But if you change the paragraph style of the master, there is apparently NO WAY for the new paragraph style to get applied to the document pages based on that master. Which is a huge oversight.

Smart Object typography in Photoshop Be Editable in InDesign
I work in sports so I have create schedule graphics. I love to format the text in InDesign and paste it into Photoshop as a smart object to build out my digital graphics but when I need to edit that smart object it kicks me into Illustrator to edit the text. I would love to be able to edit the smart object typography in InDesign where it was originally created.
(My work around has been to edit the text in InDesign and just re-paste into Illustrator.)

A search and replace that is a series of search and replaces
Often users need to run a series of search and replaces on a document. Why not create an S&R that runs a series of S&Rs in a user-defined order. It'd be great for cleaning up text. Also, allow users to decide if each S&R is run as "replace all" or with the user deciding each replace.
In addition, allow S&Rs to be run automatically when text documents (typically from Word) are placed. Choosing that would be one option in the Place window.

Hide table rows and columns
I would like the ability to hide table rows and columns, like can be done in Excel.
Even better than hiding them would be the ability to apply conditional text to specific rows or columns. Right now, if I need to hide a row, I have to cut it and paste it onto the pasteboard, then when I need it, I have to go back into the table and try to reinsert it.

Update links in the background
Links should be updated in the background. It is always annoying when you have to wait for an image to load (possibly off a server) and you have to wait for it. Maybe the frame to update should just be locked until updated but not the whole document.

Allow special characters to be added in front of note number when importing footnotes (e.g., tabs).
The "prefix" option for "document footnote options" should allow that, but only permits the few options in the pulldown menu. We should be able to insert any character before or after the footnote text.

Grep panel
Please create a palette for grep (like paragraph or character style). For example to add various style to single grep. Also add the option to link to grep non only character style, but also paragraph style and object style. Example: use a grep to find a text and formatting the text box. Thanks

Adding a dedicated Opentype window to InDesign, as is available in Illustrator (Alt + Shift + Ctrl/Cmd + T)
I think it would be extremely helpful to add a dedicated Opentype window to InDesign, as is available in Illustrator.
Changing more than one setting for a typeface - for example, removing ligatures and then enabling tabular lining - requires more than one navigation through the sub-menu within Character/Paragraph.
It seems strange that this is not a standard window in InDesign when it is in Illustrator, being that InDesign is the standard application for creating text-heavy page layouts.

Improvements to "space between" feature
Hello, InDesign people!
The new "space between paragraphs using the same style" feature is a wonderful thing, and it is useful, but I feel it could be improved upon. In practice, there may be several different paragraph styles that should be regarded as the "same style" for this purpose. For instance, say I am designing a book with poetry extracts (block quotes) mixed into the main text. Before we had the "space between" feature, I had to make a paragraph style for the first line of a poem (with space before), a second style for the subsequent lines (no…

Merge variables for color that can be used in styles and as swatches
Merge doc variables for colour.
An option on the colour swatch to add a reference to link to a merged variable from a csv for a hex, rgb or cmyk colour. This would allow specific swatches to update styles in a document for text color, lines, background colors etc if a document defined style uses that particular swatch.

I wish Cross References could be used as "callout" text.
I would like to be able to use a sentence inside a paragraph as a callout para so if the sentence is changed inside the paragraph the callout will change. You can do this only if you use the first sentence in the paragraph as the cross reference.

Spec Sheet for Paragraph Styles
I recently came across the need to print out a spec sheet of paragraph style settings from INDD. We're working with an outside vendor who is programming a proposal builder platform for our business development team. Basically, my design team created branded layout templates in INDD. We gave the vendor our native files, but their programmers need a written spec sheet of all the paragraph style attributes. From the paragraph style palette, when you go into each style, you can see the style settings, but you can't copy that text, nor export the settings as a spec sheet. I…

Make gifs great again
• Allow a preview of a live GIF while designing - currently when it is placed into a deck it is static and only reviewable by publishing online.
• Allow a choice of the GIF thumbnail that becomes the still image when an offline version is downloaded. Currently I'm at the mercy of whatever the very first frame is in the entire GIF sequence.
• Better yet, make Adobe Reader able to play gifs so the 'offline' version doesn't have to be a compromise of the original intention.

Cannot paste grouped object into graphic cell - when could previously.
Adobe InDesign CC, 2017.1 Release
Version 12.1.0.56 x 64 buildI used to be able to paste a grouped object (for example, an image with a bit of text overlayed on it) into a graphic cell in a table. Currently this is not working - I can put a regular image (just a linked image) into a graphic cell, but as soon as I try to "paste into" a copied grouped object, it does not even offer paste into as an option.
This issue is present in tables used by multiple users in different files - not a bug in…

Left / right justified paragraph control
Have the ability to give greater control to non-justified paragraphs.
As you have word and letter spacing control for justified text, have a similar set of rules that can be applied to line endings and the difference in line ending lengths for a left/right aligned paragraph. Potentially a rule to remove widows and orphans.

An actually useful AI idea: Accessibility/Reading Order
I find many AI features unhelpful - if I need text to image I can do it in Photoshop or Express, I don't need my layout program to do it. What I would love to see AI do is be able to analyze documents and automatically fix accessibility issues, such as reading order and export tagging of headers etc.
