1. No Break slows down InDesign CC 2019

   When No Break is added to multiple words, it slows down InDesign CC 2019 14.01 tremendously.
   We use No Break very often in our texts, e.g. to keep web site addresses, email addresses and allergens together as this is a requirement from our customer.
   This was never a problem in older versions but something seems to be changed in InDesign.
   I added an .idml file containing an auto-size text frame with some text (allergens). Editing the text frame in an older version of InDesign works smoothly. Doing the same thing in CC 2019 goes very slow.

2. WordsFlow

   When deciding against using WordsFlow plugin by EmSoftware, not renewing from trial license, it continued not only to be on the main FILE menu but it also is preventing normal (InDesign) placing of graphic files into InDesign files by a popup window asking for license renewal information. If I cancel that window, it cancels the PLACE... operation. In other words, WordsFlow does not extricate itself from the program even if no longer using and registered AND after uninstalling from the Windows APP utility, BUT it continues to interfere with normal InDesign operation.
   How do I get rid of this?

3. Text justification algorithm is *really* sloppy.

   When the justification is set to "justified," when I add or delete text, text moves down from previous lines, making those earlier lines look really stretched out with huge spaces. This happens constantly. It looks really bad, and there's no logical reason for it.

   This happens whether "Hyphenate" is on or off.

   Each line of text should always hold as many words as it can hold (without shrinking anything to fit). What happens on any later line should never cause any change in previous lines.

   I'm using InDesign v. 19.3 x64 in Windows.

4. spacebar

   spacebar in indesign file doesn't work for typing a space. it works in other programs, and other indesign files. it works in command menus like the find menu. it does not work in this one particular document. I am not able to type a space between words. I have to hit CTRL+space to be able to type a space. this is a really difficult change in flow to get used to. I don't know if a hit a function that accidentally set this to be the norm. please help. I want to be able to type spaces normally...

5. Automatic insertion of columns upon text alteration, always in the same spot on the page; this occurs irrespective of style (paragraph, char

   Posted that this was happening last update: this column "Layout" occurs no matter what style (paragraph or character) is selected, and the column layout affects all text placed over the area where the automatic "columns" occurs, in other words, anything adjusted or placed over the area (positioned always two columns at approx 4" down the page).
   What seems to trigger the insertion of this four-line column layout is any text alteration - it gets inserted on random pages!
   I have checked all "unseen" screens, object styles, text box controls, preferences. I am completely flummoxed (user of Adobe InDesign over 25 years and PageMaker before that - NOT a novice...)

6. Text engine buffer breaks if text contains diacritics

   I regularily edit pages with fairly long text in Icelandic, a language which uses diacritics quite a bit. If the text gets to be more than a few hundred words, the text engine buffer starts acting up, especially when using accents. It will enter two or more accents in addition to the intended accented letter, sometimes mangling the order of letters too, always being laggy too. This is NOT a new problem, but I feel it has become much more pronounced in CC 2018.

   In the attached screenshot the intended text "fréttastjóra að gefa því" has appeared as "´fr´´éttastj´ór´a að gefa þv´í"

7. quote mark position in RTL paragraph when Arabic and English text mixed and line break

   InDesign 20.2 (ME)

   In a paragraph where there is text contained within opening and closing quote marks and that text has a mixture of Arabic and English words, if that text happens to be at the end of a line and automatically flows to the next line then the positions of the quote marks reverses and are incorrect. If I force a line beak then it fixes itself, but it leaves me with text in one line that is shorter than it should be.

   This problem also appeared a few versions back, can't recall exactly when, a year or more I think, but then seemed to be resolved in a later update.

   PDF attached to show the problem (InDesign file can't be attached for some reason?)

8. Selecting text on black background doesn't highlight selection

   Version: Adobe Indesign 2025 (20.0)
   The probled occured in a file that works perfectly in Indesign 19.5. However, when I open the same file in 20.0, the error occurs.

   Problem: When I try to edit text on a black background, the selected words aren't highlighted. It happens on some pages but not all. The layers aren't locked.

   How to reproduce:
   - create a master page with a black background
   - create several pages
   - add text boxes with white text in it
   - try to select the text inside the box

   Expected result:
   - selected text is highlighted in white

   Actual result:
   - on some pages, the text highlight isn't visible (although it is actually selected)

9. Not loading cloud links > files don't work!!

   I'm sorry for this words, but I'm really ****** with the new update on indesign:

   I'm sorry but the new Update for Indesign is total ****. It's not loading my links from cloud servers and also I cannot update it via the program. So I have to start searching EACH document in the file (are you totally crazy???) to find out which link is missing because it's on a cloud server. I don't know what you did there. But everybody right now is working with cloud servers and it cannot just me going crazy right now because the files aren't working and sometimes I'm not able to export files.
   Please please fix this quickly, its horrible!

10. share for review comments are unmapped

    my editors are able to add comments to a share for review pdf in a browser without choosing a tool. they highlight text and add a comment, click submit, and the comments come up as unmapped. i'm on InDesign 17.4.

    i was able to replicate this problem myself by opening the share for review pdf in my browser (both chrome and safari) and adding comments without selecting a tool. there should be a bubble tool or something for general comments. as is, users believe they are leaving comments on specific words.

    expected: users should not be able to highlight text and add a note to it without some sort of mark showing up in the the pdf itself so i can see where the change is supposed to be made. actual: lots of unmapped, useless comments.

11. Indesign 16.3.2, Keyboard shortcut for preview (W) changes text appearance (from left justified to right justified) — but prints accurately.

    Recent update to 16.3.2 — am working on an InDesign document that has a line of left-justified text.
    1. When I use the keyboard shortcut "W" to view the document in Preview Mode (without boxes/positioning lines) the text jumps to the right hand side of the page.
    2. When I click out of Preview mode (W again) it shows me the text where I placed it — left justified. I saved the document and reopened it and the bug is still there. When I make a pdf from it, or print the page, the line is correctly on the left. In other words, it's a visual issue only.

    1. If I make the text left justified again, it fixes the issue. I wonder if the bug is to show a previous state of the design? Except that I saved the document and the bug persisted.

    I can't send screen saves as the client is prohibits sharing any of their content.

12. Paste Discretionary Line Break Malfunction

    The discretionary break character is an awesome addition. But I think it came with a bug:

    When typesetting text that contains URLs, I use a GREP search to find all URL strings in order to globally apply a character style with Language set to [No Language] in order to suppress any auto-hyphenation.

    I then use some search-replaces to globally insert discretionary breaks in places I don't mind URLs breaking, such as preceding periods and hard hyphens. This technique can still leave too-loose or too-tight letter-spacing when URLs contain long unbroken letter strings, and in those cases I insert discretionary line breaks where I want them (often recapitulating hyphenation in actual words contained in URLs, or just wherever if the URL contains a long random character string of some sort).

    ANYWAY. Sometimes, unpredictably, if I use Type: Insert Break Character: Discretionary Line Break to insert a discretionary line break, then highlight the character and copy it, and then try to use Paste to insert the discretionary line break character elsewhere, instead of inserting the discretionary line break what happens is the letter immediately following the insertion point gets deleted.

13. Place and Link

    To the InDesign Product Team,

    I am writing to provide feedback on the Place and Link (Content Collector) workflow. While the ability to sync text content across a document is invaluable, the current implementation of the "Parent-Child" relationship is overly restrictive and creates significant manual rework for designers.

    The Problem: Currently, when a Parent object is updated, the Child object frequently reverts its font size, frame dimensions, and character treatment to match the Parent—even when "Preserve Local Overrides" is enabled. While "Style Mapping" exists as a workaround, it is an overly complex solution for a simple design need: keeping the words synced while keeping the design independent.

    The Proposed Solution: I request a more intuitive "Link Options" toggle that allows a Child object to permanently lock its local formatting. Specifically:

    Content-Only Sync: A high-level checkbox that tells the Child to only accept string (text) updates, ignoring all Parent-side attributes like point size, leading, tracking, and color.
    
    Geometry Independence: An option to decouple the frame's scale and dimensions from the Parent permanently, without needing to dive into complex sub-menus.
    
    One-Click "Stay as I Am": A simplified "Link Options" dialog where "Preserve Local Overrides" actually functions as a master lock for all visual attributes, rather than being overridden by "Update Appearance" or "Update Styles" flags.
    

    The "Place and Link" tool should function as a content-management bridge, not a formatting mirror. Designers need the flexibility to use the same text in a large headline (Parent) and a small sidebar (Child) without the software constantly fighting their layout decisions.

14. Before tag and after untag frame with different behavior

    If you tag a frame object (XML), this object does not behave the same after untagging as before tagging. In other words: tagging is not fully reversible. You can see a difference in the layer panel and in the exported PDF tag structure (Tagged PDF)

    How can this behavior be reproduced?

    1. Create a new InDesign document.
    2. Draw a placeholder (empty) graphic frame
    3. Assign any XML tag to the frame
    4. Remove the XML tag
    5. Export a tagged PDF
       

    What is the difference between the object before tagging and after untagging?

    The layer panel shows a different status.

    The frame before tagging is not assigned a tag in the tag structure of the PDF during PDF export. A tag is assigned to the object in the PDF structure after tagging and untagging. (see attached screenshots)

    What should be the correct behavior?

    Both states of the frames - i.e. without tagging and after untagging - should result in the same result in the layer panel and in the tag export for PDF.

    Why is this relevant?

    This causes a problem if these objects appear in the tag structure of the exported PDF. They are (empty) graphic frames, but InDesign assigns a Figure tag to them and they also have no alternative text. When checking the PDF for accessibility, an error is reported.

    These two states of the same object cannot be distinguished via ExtendScript. If an InDesign document is saved using IDML, these objects are converted back into “normal” graphic frames.

15. pen tool

    When modifying a container box by adding points with the pen tool, the points wont select individually and the pen changes to the hand tool and will only select the object in the container. At first I thought it might be my Wacom, but the mouse also will not select points as (option pen) or using the point selection tool.

    At the same time when trying to clip an object set to transparency, so an object below can be seen so I can clip around it. The object becomes opaque making the task impossible.

    I am running a the latest updates available an my OS is current with Mojave's latest update.

    Indesign has become unusably slow and I spend 5 times more time watching the beachball of death than getting anything done. My clients don't care, they only know I'm not getting their work done. After 25+ years as a hardcore Adobe Fan, I'm beginning to lose faith, and have had to look at other software for solutions for my company.

    Currently there are almost 1400 serious bugs listed for the current release of Indesign alone listed on the Adobe site. With a constant stream of updates adding more bugs before addressing the existing issues. If this is considered acceptable by Adobe for the sake of my clients and business I must look for other solutions. I'm not a new user. Far from it, and serious bugs making Adobe products unusable for days, and weeks on end has become the norm and not the exception.

    I don't need you programs to "Wipe my Butt" for me, I just need them to work like they used to. When the cloud goes down. Everyone goes down. More care is necessary before a new release.

    Sorry for the harsh words, but in '94 I was an original Beta Tester for PS3 and still have my original copy. I love Adobe!!! Please don't force me to go back to CS6.

16. IDS 2021 (16.x Windows) Locks up when loading indd file with missing font in paragraph style

    InDesign Server 2021 Windows Edition (16.x)

    We had several indd files that had a Paragraph Style listing a font that was not actually used anywhere in the document (no text in the file was using that font.). In other words, the Style said it used "font a", but there was never ANY text actually using "font a" in the file. "Font A" is a non-system font that was installed on the desktop. If you load the indd file in InDesign Desktop, no errors occur, and Preflight says there are no errors, as expected.
    If you remove the file from the desktop, and then open the indd file in InDesign desktop, you still get no errors and no preflight errors, even though the font is defined in the Paragraph style.
    If you then use COM to control InDesign Server (windows edition), and tell it to load the indd file. InDesign Server will lock up. No errors are shown on the console or event log, IDS just LOCKS UP..
    If you package the indd project and tell it to include document fonts, it will not include the font defined in the Paragraph style unless text using that font is actually in the document.
    I don't think InDesign Server should LOCK UP in this circumstance.

    We had this happen with some 60+ indd files, and it took a lot of trial & error to determine what actually CAUSED the lockup.

    To reproduce:
    1) Use InDesign Desktop to create an InDesign document.
    2) Define a Paragraph style using a font that is NOT installed on the InDesign Server.
    3) Define a text frame using that Paragraph style. Do not actually put ANY text in the frame.
    4) Save the InDesign document.
    5) Use COM to bind to an instance of InDesign server APPLICATION object (called "app" in this example.
    6) Use the APPLICATION instance to open the indd file in OpenCopy mode ((InDesignServer.Document)app.Open(<filename>, InDesignServer.idOpenOptions.idOpenCopy)
    InDesign server will never come back. It locks up.

    If you edit the indd file and change the Paragraph style to be a font that is actually installed on IDS, then the open returns an instance of the DOCUMENT COM object as expected.

    We had several indd files that had a Paragraph Style listing a font that was not actually used anywhere in the document (no text in the file was using that font.). In other words, the Style said it used "font a", but there was never ANY text actually using "font a" in the file. "Font A" is a non-system font that was installed on the desktop.     Current Problem:
    InDesign cannot break merged table cells across pages, creating significant limitations for complex hierarchical tables. When a merged cell spans more rows than can fit on a single page, the entire table becomes unviewable or requires manual workarounds.
    Real-World Scenario:
    • Level 1: A main category (e.g., "Strategic Goal") spans 30 rows

    • Current Issue: The merged cell cannot break across pages, making the table unusable
    Proposed Solution:
    Implement automatic cell threading for merged cells across page breaks, similar to Microsoft Word's functionality:
    • Allow merged cells to split naturally at page boundaries
    • Maintain visual continuity with repeated cell content or indicators
    • Preserve cell formatting and styles across page breaks
    • Optional: Add "Keep with next X rows" setting for better control
    Technical Benefits:

    Current Limitation:
    Table cells cannot have rounded corners or customized intersection points because cells share borders rather than having independent edges.
    Conceptual Innovation:
    Instead of trying to add "corner radius" to cells (which is geometrically impossible with shared borders), introduce Intersection Point Styling.
    Proposed Feature: "Intersection Styles"
    Similar to current Line Styles, add styling options for where cell borders meet:
