IDML: missing Font Style property in Character Style after export
Version: InDesign CC 2020 15.0.1
How to reproduce the bug:
1. Create a Character Style with "Bold" Font Style and apply it to a word/character range
2. Save in INDD file format
3. Export the IDML
4. Open the IDML and you will notice that the bold property for the Character Style was lostExpected result: the Character Style should be the same as in the original INDD file
Actual result: the "bold" property was lost during the export process. The INDD file is fine.
I verified that InDesign CC 2019 14.0.3 is not affected by this bug.

Adobe Fonts automatically substituting versions of fonts that are document-stalled
When I open an InDesign file that has been packaged with all the fonts (non-Adobe Fonts) included in the Document fonts folder, if I happen to have the same version of the font activated in Adobe Fonts, InDesign automatically, and without warning, substitutes the Adobe Fonts version. This is a major problem. The heirarchy should be document-installed fonts FIRST, then InDesign can look in Adobe Fonts and suggest replacing it. This should not be done without warning in the background. It means that the person who was working in a package workflow without using any Adobe Fonts can send a file to another person using Adobe Fonts, who unbeknownst to them, substitutes the font, then packages and returns the file, and now the font is missing from the new package when returned. This is a huge licensing issue at the very least.

Hard returns only (soft returns converted)16 votesHi,
Thanks for your patience all this while. We investigated on this issue and below are our findings. The problem with this bug is related to ages old standards difference between different operating systems.
On Mac (OS X and later) there is only one way to identify line end i.e by using a single character LF, while on Windows (and DOS before it) uses a pair of CR and LF characters to terminate lines.
Hence when writing them down to any text file these characters are written as such.
Windows, can therefore dedicate LF to understand soft return separately while Mac cannot do any
such thing. Because of this when we read it back from the text file the LF character is interpreted as line break (or new para) on Mac and soft return on Windows. These files require conversion when moved from one OS to another
Consider this article for more information: https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/mac-os-x/0596004605/ch01s06.html
A same analogy is found in excel when saved as a text fileThanks

Generic check mark reappears in PDF check box after exporting to Acrobat Pro
InDesign 14.0.2 and Acrobat Continuous 2019.10.20099
This issue is about the behavior and appearance of interactive check boxes in documents that have been exported to Interactive PDFs.
There is a difference in the way that check boxes created in InDesign behave and appear versus those created in Acrobat Pro. The Acrobat Pro Forms preferences are involved in this difference.
When, in Acrobat Pro Forms Preferences, under Highlight Color, the “Show border hover color for fields” option is selected, check boxes created in InDesign behave and appear in the following manner.
When a check box is made active, it first appears the same as the check box that was created in InDesign. When you tab to or select another check box, or when you save the selection in the PDF, the appearance of the check box reverts to a default generic check mark.
When, in Acrobat Pro Forms Preferences, under Highlight Color, the “Show border hover color for fields” option is not selected, check boxes created in InDesign behave and appear in the following manner.
When a check box is made active, it first appears the same as the check box that was created in InDesign and remains as such.
This degrades the purpose of using the highlighted fields, which is to call attention to fields that need to be filled.
When the check boxes are created in Acrobat, it makes no difference in appearance or behavior if the “Show border hover color for fields” is selected or not. They always appear as the checkbox style you have chosen to use. They do not revert to a generic check mark.
This is the way that custom check boxes created in InDesign should behave. Thus, they would allow the use of a highlighted field without the appearance of the “selected” custom graphic changing to an unwanted generic graphic.
Please refer to the InDesign Forums message at this link for examples:

Preserve Image Dimensions when Relinking and "Auto-fit" options do not seem to work.
I am using Indesign 14.0
When I relink files, Indesign changes the scale and placement of images automatically, regardless of whether the preserve image dimensions option in the file handling box is checked or unchecked, and whether the "auto-fit" button in the tool menu is checked or uncheked.
Preferences > File Handling > "Preserve Image Dimensions when Relinking"

InDesign 14.0.1
- Switch to InDesign from another program
- Select either Selection Tool or Direct Select tool
- Double click on the text to place a cursor among the text
- Double click again to select a word
Expected result: quick action from step to step
Actual result: a few seconds of lag

import pdf comments
- ID 14 Mac
- Copy text out of a comment to paste into layout
- Would expect that the cursor could be used to select all or part of an imported PDF comment
- In fact it is EXTREMELY difficult to get the palette to recognize that text is selected in the palette interface. The "Copy" popup does not appear a large proportion of the time, or you can't select the range of characters you need. Even though Acrobat is terrible at the same process, it is significantly faster to copy the needed range of characters from the comment in Acrobat and switch back to ID to paste.

InDesign Corrupt files
InDesign users all have to deal with corrupt files sometime during their career using this program. Usually meaning lost time and, more importantly, money. It would be nice if there was a way to have InDesign or another program scan and fix corrupt files (Adobe FirstAid). Dumping this corrupt file into this program would scan the file, find the cause of the error, and isolate it--almost like a virus scanner. Even if this means a page is lost or margins are messed up. It would be nice to at least get some work saved. For example, I throw in a file that keeps causing InDesign to crash. It scans the file. It finds that their is some markup code in a text box on page 23 out of 122 that is throwing an error. This text box is removed, maybe even a red box is put in its place so I know what has been taken out.

Auto-size text boxes with rounded corners expands randomly.
Version 2018, 13.0
Set a text box to auto size height and width (with no line breaks)
Make the corners rounded
As you can see in the attached jpgs of before and after, sometimes the box expands in width and sometimes in height, but randomly, not wrapping around the text correctly.16 votesHi,
Can you please mail me a sample document to reproduce the issue? I am unable to reproduce the bug.
Is the issue only specific to 13.0? What is the reference point for the autosize?-Aman

Multi-level lists
VERSION: 19.4
ISSUE: If you create a multi-level list (1, 1.1, 1.2.3, etc) and export as an accessible PDF the list structure is not correct and presents the incorrect "List level" to the reader when using any assistive technology.
EXPECTED RESULTS: When a new level of a list is created the sublist's <L> goes INSIDE the <LBody> tag to properly indicate the list is sublevel.
ACTUAL RESULTS: In the most recent build of InDesign, the <L> is just a sibling of the <LBody>. This is not only incorrect an a violation of PDF/UA-1, it also requires fixing EVERY TIME you use this feature in InDesign because it voices the incorrect level to the user when listening using assistive technology.

Scrolling is glitchy or nonfunctional in InDesign 2024
Scrolling with a mouse (not the trackpad) through a document vertically or horizontally works, but not always. Zooming in by holding Alt and then scrolling is unusable because trying to zoom in causes everything to zoom all the way out, and continuing to try to zoom in only works sometimes.
I have tried this with multiple mouses, and the issue does not occur in any other program, including InDesign 2023.
In the attached video, I am holding Alt and trying to zoom in.

Need Alternative Launch images
I do not think the launch images in photoshop, indesign and illustrator are culturally sensitive. They should not include any people especially not raunchy females (as in photoshops blonde superhero type) female. Who needs that in their life? It doesn't help people be happy with their own partner or spouse to have some perfect looking woman staring at them! They should be totally neutral - landscapes, nature, no people please!! I posted this as a feature request too to at least have the option to disable this launch image. Thank you for your consideration on this issue.

Graphics glitches galore on M1 MacBook Air + external 4K monitor
InDesign 17 on an M1 MacBook Air with Big Sur is barely usable with an external 4K monitor. There are graphic artifacts everywhere, especially near the margins/edge of boxes which makes it hard to know if anything is aligned properly. Everything looks okay on the laptop's built-in display but is distorted on the external.
Also, when scrolling, the screen updates sporadically and usually does the Windows 95-looking stuck window effect.
If I turn off the GPU it looks better when working statically but when scrolling it is even worse.

WorldReady settings go missing in [Basic Paragraph] style
Adobe InDesign (ME) 2021, 2020, CC 2019, ..., CS6
macOS and WindowsInDesign's WorldReady settings (Paragraph Direction, Kashidas, etc.) are being stripped from a document's [No Paragraph Style] style when opened on a machine with a missing 3rd-party plug-in (like Em Software's InCatalog). This appears to happen with any 3rd-party plug-in that adds a text attribute with a prefix that's lower than the WorldReady plug-in's prefix. While the following steps use the Middle Eastern app (English Arabic), where there's a UI to see the style's empty/blank WorldReady entries, we've confirmed that this problem affects all app variants (including English (Roman)).
To reproduce:
1. Install ME version of InDesign 2021 (English Arabic).
2. Install Em Software's InCatalog plug-in (http://emsoftware.com/products/emcatalog/ ) or any plug-in that adds a text attribute with a prefix ID below that of WorldReady's 0x50f00. (The SDK's BasicTextAdornment sample will work if its kBscTAPrefixNumber is changed to something like 0x43a00.)
3. Restart InDesign while holding down Shift-Control-Option/Alt (to ensure the session workspace's [Basic Paragraph] style is rebuilt to include the new plug-in's text attribute).
4. Create a new document and add a text frame containing a few paragraphs using the [Basic Paragraph] style. This text should compose as right-to-left (the ME version's default direction, as specified by WorldReady's kParagraphDirAttrBoss). Create a numbered list, since that's a great way to see the problem.
5. Save the document.
6. Quit InDesign.
7. Remove InCatalog (or whatever plug-in was installed in step 2).
8. Restart InDesign.
9. Open the document that was saved in step 5.Alternatively:
1. Install ME version of InDesign 2021 (English Arabic).
2. Restart InDesign while holding down Shift-Control-Option/Alt (to ensure a clean session workspace)
3. Open the attached SavedWithInCat(2021ME).indd file. (Well, UserVoice won't let me upload it. Ask & I can send directly.)Notice that the text frame in the opened document incorrectly flows left-to-right and the numbered list's numbers wrongly show on the left rather than the right. Edit the [Basic Paragraph] style and note that the WorldReady settings in the Middle East Character Formats and Indents and Spacing panels are blank/empty. (See attached before-after screenshots.) One would expect a style to survive intact even when opened on a machine with a missing 3rd-party plug-in, but instead some of its settings may be at risk of being lost.
We've used WorldReady as the victim here, but this problem affects any plug-in, Adobe or 3rd party, that adds a text attribute with a prefix that's higher than the missing plug-in's prefix (such as Em Software's InData).
Details: We've isolated what looks like a long-standing problem (bug?) with the SDK's AttributeBossList::CopyInto(), where it stops the copy when it encounters an attribute whose plug-in is missing. Instead, the copy should continue after the missing plug-in's entry order to produce a complete list of non-missing attributes. Copies produced by AttributeBossList's Duplicate(), ApplyAttributes(), and its copy-constructor are all affected.

Spellcheck is grabbing the comma after words, causing an error
Since upgrading to Indesign 2021 v16.0, when I run a spell check, if it catches a word it thinks is misspelled but that word has a comma after it, spellcheck also grabs the comma. If I attempt to Add that word to my user dictionary, I get an error "Words ending in punctuation other than ending periods may not be added into the dictionary". This never happened in previous versions of Indesign. See attached screengrab.

Indesign constantly comes up with a weird error when ever I click save while in a document - 'Indesign is unable to save this file. We tried, but appears to be damaged. click Ok.
Also I know in the previous version that whenever I zoomed in too much I would get constant crashes. Hope it's been fixed in the version but I won't hold my breath.

harfbuzz
Compile Harfbuzz with Graphite support enabled.
InDesign 2020 uses Harfbuzz for complex script rendering. Harfbuzz has the capability to use Graphite instructions for rendering complex scripts, but Adobe has compiled Harfbuzz without Graphite support.
Graphite is needed for rendering some character combinations used in languages which are not supported by other font technologies.
