2. Image mislocation (Myanmar, Khmer, Lao, Thai)

   Image mislocation (Myanmar, Khmer, Lao, Thai)

   In Myanmar (Burmese) Unicode, there is an error where the image overlaps the text.
   In the example, the red box should not overlap the text.
   For reference, Khmer, Lao, and Thai have the same problem.

3. Ordinals do not work

   The OpenType function „ordinals“ does not function correctly.
   When I type English ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on), the option „ordinals“ should move the text characters to the top. When the number is at the beginning of a line, it works. But if there’s another word before the number, it puts only the first character to the top and leaves the second on line. I tried with different fonts, and only with one of the fonts it works as expected. What’s wrong???

4. text looks different in the same file from Mac to MacBook

   The same file look very different while opened on my Mac as well my MacBook Pro, – both have the latest version installed and the same fonts, etc, as I work from/with both computers via an external SSD.

5. Baseline of text shifts

   In the last two versions (Am now at latest v16.0) of InDesign this has been happening to me: my fonts baseline shifts mid word, randomly.

   It follows through in exported PDF.

6. Issues with MacOS custom keyboards and InDesign

   The users have InDesign V16.1 installed on macOS Big Sur (11.4).
   They use custom software keyboards (created with Ukelele) to type Native American language characters (Salish via IPA). They use custom fonts that have the required glyphs for the language. OpenType marks are used for composing characters. The fonts are both Unicode and OpenType compliant. Frequently a properly composed character will consist of a primary glyph (such as "K") followed by a combining glottal and a wsuperior. If each key of the custom software keyboard has only a single unicode code point assigned, everything works fine. However, if the custom software keyboard has more than one unicode code point assigned, then only the first unicode code point glyph is accepted and displayed by InDesign. This is consistent and repeatable in InDesign. With all other tested apps (Word, Pages, Mellel, OS Finder, etc) both the custom fonts and custom keyboards work fine (a single keypress, with multiple unicode code points assigned) displays all of the glyphs assigned to the keystroke.

7. PDF conversion

   Still does not work with a simple remittance envelope we have - see attached screenshot. After the conversion, the entire document is black and all the fonts are missing. After every update of InDesign we try again and get the same results.

8. Placing MS Word documents

   Hi,

   I am designing a Journal in InDesign with over 50 articles. All the articles are done with MS Word with footnotes etc. After placing about 45 articles I found that in some placed articles the fonts have changed in certain pragraphs. Since I noticed this at the tail end, I did some experiments and placed the next article with the option "Redefine InDesign style" selected and the exact fonts were placed. But to my surprise there are 90 errors in the already placed 45 articles.

   How come InDesign change the structure of the previous 45 articles when I am placing the 46th Article?

   How can I avoid this?

9. Paragraph-style grep functions are unreliable

   inDesign paragraph-style grep functions are unreliable. I have two examples with differing issues in a monthly publication.

   The first is a query for web addresses and emails based on common TLDs. I have used it for years.
   \b\S+(.com|.org|.gov|.edu|.net|.UK|.ca|.uk|.ly)((\s)|[^>])\;:\s(.\s)(\,\s)]+)

   In the same document, on the same text, the style change query works, and then doesn't work in another paragraph style. To make it more confusing, if I remove the pathname variables it will then work. If I past the variables back in, it will still work.

   Even simple match queries will need to be edited into different syntax to work from one pstyle to the next.

   The second is just "what’s up with the ampersand?!"

   If I type in one ‘&’ I can come back to find ‘&&’. It happens a lot! It can keep compounding to make 3 or more. It work the same way even if I treat it like a metacharacter.

   Anyone?

10. 17.4 hangs opening files

    Updated to 17.4 to benefit from purported improvement on ID hang on files with missing fonts. Now opening any file causes a hang.

11. IDS on Windows: Extreme slowness in ExtendScript execution via SOAP connection (with weird workaround)

    SETUP

    • IDS Server 14.0.3.433 running on Windows Server 2019 (build 17763.864)

    • Local connection using "sampleclient.exe"

    • Two test scripts (attached):
      Slow script: "adobe-ids-win-slow.js" (approx 275 KB in size)
      Fast script: "adobe-ids-win-fast.js" (approx 275 KB in size)

    PROBLEM

    There are two scripts to compare. They are both of identical size, does nothing but declare a variable and return a string value. However, while execution of one of the scripts take a fraction of a second, the other script typically runs for > 10 seconds before completing.

    TESTS AND OBSERVATIONS

    1) This takes excessive time to run (typically 13 seconds on my test machine):

       C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop>"c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CC Server 2019\sampleclient.exe" -host localhost:8190 c:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\adobe-ids-win-slow.js
       Script result (std__string): Done
    

    2) This completes quickly (typically in less than 0.1 seconds):

       C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop>"c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CC Server 2019\sampleclient.exe" -host localhost:8190 c:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\adobe-ids-win-fast.js
       Script result (std__string): Done
    

    3) Adding the "-server" flag to the slow test will make it run fast, since the script isn't passed via SOAP but instead evaluated directly from local disk. This tells me the parsing of the ExtendScript statements isn't slow in itself so the difference seems to lie in the SOAP request handling.

    4) Now a really weird part: removing the very first space (before the comment on line 1) in "adobe-ids-win-slow.js" makes it run almost as fast as the fast script when repeating test 1) above. It turns out that "adobe-ids-win-slow.js" MUST start with a /* */-style comment in the very first byte to run fast; adding the space back, or removing the comment completely, makes it evaluate slowly again. I've tried other tokens such as semicolon, //-style comment, curly brackets etc but none had the same effect.

    5) In contrast to the change in 4), adding spaces before the comment, or removing the comment entirely, from "adobe-ids-win-fast.js" makes no difference in its evaluation performance.

    6) Another strange discrepancy is that even when "adobe-ids-win-slow.js" is modified to run fast using the change described in 4) above, the speed is still slower than the "adobe-ids-win-fast.js" variant. They both declare a string of same length but the data INSIDE the string is different, but while "adobe-ids-win-fast.js" completes in < 0.1 seconds the modified "adobe-ids-win-slow.js" takes closer to a full second.

    7) All of the tests above run at good speed (less than a second) when connecting to IDS 14.0.2.324 on macOS (tested with Catalina 10.15.7). The minor difference in speed between the slow and fast scripts seen in 6) is still present though, but is again eliminated if the "-server" option is used.

    OTHER COMMENTS

    I tried running Microsoft's Windows Performance Analyzer to capture what the slow IDS is doing during the long wait. I found that the overhead is located in calls from AFL (Adobe File Library) to the NT kernel, but without debug symbols I couldn't pinpoint it in more detail. My totally unconfirmed suspicion is that gSOAP/2.7 (as returned in the "Server" HTTP header in IDS connections) is applying some content sniffing to detect encoding, data format or other properties of the inlined script, but why this would only take place on Windows is a mystery, and it's also odd that the initial code comment would short-circuit this and improve performance dramatically.

    I've also tried disabling various Windows Security settings (Firewall, Virus & Threat Protection, Exploit Protection etc) in case that was interfering with network I/O but I've not found any improvement in that area.

    The slowness is not inherent in "sampleclient.exe" either since the root problem was first observed using our own HTTP client, as was the weird workaround of adding the comment string. I'm just using "sampleclient.exe" here to set up a self-contained test case.

12. some lines in textbook can no longer be read, whole line blacked out in Indesign 15.1.2

    After updating to InDesign 15.1.2
    some lines in some text boxes are blacked out, text cannot be read anymore
    I used Arial. A few other fonts show the text, but do not remove black line of unused text.
    I can make text white, it will then show up on black background.

13. Changing language setting of paragraph text causes turnovers to change

    Indesign Version 16.1 Windows 10 Home 64-bit

    Given some random body text, the default language setting was English: USA, if I want to change this to any other language like English: UK (for spell checking reasons) it causes the turnovers of certain paragraphs to change.

    Different fonts do the same thing, I primarily tested on a non-type 1 version of Melior and Helvetica but also tried some Adobe Fonts. However, different language settings cause different bits of text to change their turnover, ergo English: USA has different turnovers to English: USA Legal.

    Changing this setting in the Paragraph style or by selecting the text and changing it in the character box leads to the same output.

    I've added a photo showing an example of this, I'd attach a test document but can't.

    At text insertion through a clipboard the text after a strange dash is cut off.
    When placing through drag&drop everything is normal.

18. Export stops at 0%

    Exporting common documents often results in a "crash" at 0%. No error comes up, it just stays at 0% indefinitely.

    If I try stop the export I can't, if I try close InDesign I can't. I have to force quit the program and open it numerous times following in order to get all of my fonts back and registered... even if it's in a package.

    Extremely time consuming and painful.

19. Data Merge Issue with Chinese Characters in Adobe InDesign 2025

    Steps to Reproduce the Issue

    Open Adobe InDesign and create a new document.
    Prepare a CSV file with Traditional Chinese text using UTF-8 encoding.
    Use the Data Merge feature to import the CSV file into InDesign.
    Place the merged data field into the document layout.
    Preview or finalize the merge.
    Expected Result

    The Chinese characters in the CSV file should be displayed correctly in the merged document without any distortion or encoding issues.
    Actual Result

    The Chinese characters appear as garbled text (random symbols or question marks) during the merge preview and in the final output.
    Switching to different fonts (e.g., TrueType, OpenType, or system default fonts) does not resolve the issue.
    Attempts with different encoding formats (UTF-8, UTF-16, etc.) and alternative CSV/text file formats (via Google Sheets, TextEdit) also fail.
    Upgrading to Adobe InDesign 2025 (20.0) Traditional Chinese version does not fix the issue.

20. Random pdfs displaying weird text placement

    Since Adobe updated my InDesign to 2021, I have been having issues with fonts showing correctly in placed pdfs. Sometimes text will be completely removed. Other times text is displayed enlarged, upside down and reversed. It is not all pdfs. Sometimes it is just one page in a pdf that displays badly. Please fix this bug. It is very annoying when I'm trying to paginate and print files for clients.
