  2. Exporting Emojis to PDF

I built a newsletter with the use of the new Apple Emoji "glyphs" in InDesign and when I went to export it as a PDF, it replaced my emojis with random images from my file.

I talked with Adobe support and learned that only vector emojis can be used in PDFs which is a bit frustrating! Can we update the PDF export capability to include these new emoji features, so we can use the glyphs like I think that they were intended? I'd be a happy camper!! Thank you in advance!

  3. Tab controls are buggy. InDesign CC 2018

When using the Tabs control dialogue box all sorts of problems begin to manifest. First, as you are working with the tabs controls page elements go sideways. Text overlaps, sometimes entire paragraphs preceding the area you are working in.

On occasion, the tabs simply don't line up to where you assign them, even when you do so numerically. (See screenshot)

Settings for paragraph styles take precedence over tabs settings (even though tabs traditionally were the opposite, taking precedence.)

  4. InDesign changing opacity for an unselected item

I am trying to place a slightly opaque rectangle over an image but when I select to lower the opacity on the rectangle, the image (regardless if it's above or below) changes as well.

What's more odd is when I select that photo after I do the action, the image says it is at 100%. The "change" has not been reflected. I have uploaded a 1-2-3 photo demo. Note the photo's slight change in transparency although set at 100%.

This happens when the photo and rectangle are in separate layers, as well. The two items are not placed within each…

The magic of InDesign’s effects all happens via Adobe’s transparency technology, which allows us to blend colors and detail from different objects. In order for it to all work there has to be a consistent color space for InDesign to use when it blends colors. This is called the Transparency Blend Space and it’s really important that you understand it in order to get the most out of InDesign’s effects. When we use transparency effects, InDesign compares different objects and combines their colors and detail. In order for objects to be blended, they have to be in the same color space. So when you apply transparency, InDesign converts everything on a spread to the Transparency Blend Space, regardless of whether that object is actually involved in the effect. And it’s important to note that when we say things are converted, we don’t mean that InDesign alters your placed files; they…

  5. Opening file in Adobe InDesign CC 2018 prevents same file from opening in InCopy CC 2018

InCopy CC 2018 users get kicked out of file if file is opened in InDesign CC 2018. InCopy CC 2018 cannot open files create in InDesign CC 2018. See attachment.

  6. Search field does not work in Open dialogue box

Simple search filename request in the Open dialogue box and the search does not work in InDesign. This works in EVERY SINGLE OTHER APPLICATION KNOWN TO MAN. Just not in InDesign. InDesign is becoming the most unstable app I have ever worked within in over 10 years. Come on Adobe - this is Mac App 101 and you are FAILING MISERABLY. Fix this embarrassment immediately.

  8. Scripts Panel Sorting

    InDesign 2017.1 (v12.10.56); macOS High Sierra 10.13

When I open the Scripts Panel, nothing is in order. It used to be in alphabetical order like the Scripts Panel folder in my user library.

  10. Drawing glitches when placing transparent PNGs in RGB documents on monitors with specific color profiles

Applicable to Any Version of Mac/InDesign

When using an EIZO color management monitor with a profile created by ColorNavigator where "Reflect Black Level in Tone Curve" is enabled, placing a transparent PNG into an RGB document causes severe drawing issues, rendering the document almost unusable.

This issue occurs only when GPU rendering is enabled and does not happen with CPU rendering. Additionally, it does not occur when placing a transparent PNG in a CMYK document.

Even under the same conditions, this issue does not occur in Photoshop or Illustrator, only in InDesign.

While creating a profile with "Reflect Black Level…

  11. Two Monitors - UI Window Always Loads Off Screen - Can't Resize Mac OS 14.5

This has been a bug for at least 5 years with InDesign (see link at the bottom of the post).

When a Mac user has two monitors, if the primary monitor is situated "lower" than the secondary monitor in a side-by-side configuration in the Display "Arrange" setting (see screenshot, main display is laptop, on right), then the windows will always load slightly off screen, locking the user out of moving them or rearranging them.

There is a temporary fix to put the main monitor "higher" than the secondary monitor in the horizontal arrangement.

However, this is an unacceptable long term…

  12. Multi-character input from Indic keyboards failing

Tested in InDesign 2023 18.5.1 and 2024 19.1, on Mac OS Ventura 13.4

Several Indic keyboard layouts include keys that input a sequence of more than one character as a shortcut for typing the common –ra,, r–, or other syllabic forms that Unicode encodes as a sequence of multiple characters. So, for example, the Mac Sinhala keyboard assigns the following multi-character sequences to individual keys:

    [`] = ්‍ර (rakārānsaya, U+0DCA U+200D U+0DBB)

    [Shift]+[`] = ර්‍ (repaya, U+0DBB U+0DCA U+200D)

    [Shift]+[H] = ්‍ය (yansaya, U+0DCA U+200D U+0DBA)

But in InDesign only the first character of each sequence is input, the second…

  13. Copy & paste within a numbered list can cause wrong numbering

If you create a numbered list which runs over 2 or more columns and copy some text within the list from one paragraph to another the numbering changes. In my example you have 2 times 1 in the list.

To make it even more crazy this only happens when you use the Adobe Single-line composer. If you work with the Adobe ParagraphComposer there's no problem at all.

If you change the text frame from 2 columns to 1 column and back the error disappears as well.

  14. InDesign and PDF comments: extremely slow

    1. Version of Adobe InDesign V 18.0
    2. Importing the PDF comments to indesign, some tags when selected, makes the program extremely slow, taking several minutes to release the indesign again.
    3. The expected result would be that it was a matter of seconds and not minutes.
    4. The basic ones work very well, but markings like geometric figures and annotations make the indesign very slow.
    5. And here's a link to a video to see how you need to switch from one appointment to another: https://www.dropbox.com/s/jzxsh7t9ci0a8y1/teste.mp4?dl=0

  15. Can't grab window

When working on an InDesign file, when I need to grab the InDesign window (by clicking and dragging) and move it, I usually have to make three attempts before my mouse "catches" the window. InDesign 17.2, Mac Studio OS 12.3.1. It's very random when it works and not works, but mostly it doesn't work on the first attempt.

  16. InDesign not displaying actual (print) size

InDesign 2021 does not actually show you the printed size of the document.

There are two potential (and faulty) options to achieve this currently:

    1. Set the zoom level to 100%: On various forums I've read that this should let you view the document at actual print size. A document that physically takes up 10x10cm on your screen, should print at 10x10cm.

In effect, that doesn't happen and the 100% renders my document at a way larger size than what it's actual size. (I'm literally holding up a ruler against my screen, and a 10cm wide page is about 20cm wide…

  17. Table header line (below) disappears half when editing text in InCopy

We encounter an unusual behavior with table lines.

When an editor edits text in InCopy and saves the changes, half of the line below the table’s headers disappears. See screenshots “Before” (expected result) and “After” (actual result) the editing. The structure of these particular tables is quite complex.

We use Adobe InDesign/InCopy, version 15.1.3 x64, in combination with the WoodWing Studio Editorial System.

  18. inDesign 16.1 - New version(s) do not keep color settings for documents

Just one more thing to check EVERY time I look at the document.

Reverts to ---- Emulate Adobe inDesign 2.0 CMS Off

    ISSUE
    A. Even after changing the Color Settings in an open document when I switch apps and come back the Colors Settings have reverted ---- Emulate Adobe inDesign 2.0 CMS Off ---- this is really, really annoying.

    B. Opening a document that had been saved in the current version - the Color Settings did not save with the document -

I just made my regular preference without a document open - quit the program reopened -- the Color…

  20. Hebrew Vowel Points Incorrectly Positioned

When keying (or importing) Hebrew text, InDesign often misplaces vowel points when two or more vowel points are attached to a single base character unless the base character and vowel points are keyed in a specific order. I don't totally understand it, but it has something to do with Unicode normalization. Microsoft Word gets around this problem, but I can't say how. It would be nice, however, if InDesign could get around it, too.

One Hebrew font, SBL Hebrew, has written Unicode features (?) to prevent the normalization problem, but most fonts cannot do this on their own in InDesign.…
