Shortcuts messed up after update to CC
InDesign CC 12.1.0.56 (2017.1)
MacOS Sierra 10.12.5(1) The default super- and subscript shortcuts (cmd+shift+= and ctrl+cmd+shift+=) do not work on mac num keyboard. Had to change shortcuts.
(2) When using the default shortcut for italics (cmd+shift+I) the text is changed to "Heavy Italic" instead of "Italic" with the (legal) Avenir Next font family.4 votes -
Locked objects get selected
Not sure why adobe changed the lock of an item. It used to work perfect to lock my background objects. Now, it I have background objects; they still get selected even if they are locked; it's such a huge inconvenience and waste of time to sort selected objects. Please fix or put back the lock object.
4 votesOption ‘Prevent Selection of Locked Objects’ (under Preferences > General) should be checked. When this option is checked, it does not allow locked objects to get selected.

import options are collapsed (CC2017)
when importing a file, the import options are collapsed, so you always have to check if the "import options" are marked. can reproduce. should be uncollapsed like the versions before.

Change to gap tool made it useless for measurement
PRior to the latest update I could use the gap tool to hover between items and see in a moment the distance between them. Now the text color is so pale I can barely see it when hovering. Probably not an intentional change.
4 votesWe have made improvements to the readability aspect in the Control panel fields when using the Gap Tool in InDesign CC 2018. You will see a marked change as compared to InDesign CC 2017.
Closing this thread as we are no more hearing from users about this issue. Thanks,

Running Header Removes ZWNJ (Zero-width non-joiner) Character (U+200C)
I want to use Running Header to have the section name at the top of the pages.
The section title has Zwnj character (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-width_non-joiner) but running header removes this character (U+200C).

InDesign interface has issues after exiting touch mode
To replicate the bug, have at least two documents open.
After using touch mode and then switching to normal (essentials), the status bar at the end of the current document (contains pages, etc.) will look a little rough. In the document that was not focused, the entire status bar background is missing. In addition, on that document the scrollbars disappear and flash while you scroll, which is a little disturbing for your eyes.4 votes -

bugs with version 21.4
Since version 21.4, there have been a lot of bugs and slowdowns while working.
The process freezes very quickly, and I am forced to force-quit the application to close the software.3 votes -
Drag/Drop Link Causes Loading (Spinny) Wheel - Must Force Quit InDesign and Restart on Windows
Occasionally, mostly when placing photos of PDF's via drag/drop, and at other random times, InDesign will be stuck, and the mouse cursor will be stuck on the loading/spinning wheel. I will have to open the Task Manager, force quit InDesign, and re-open. When I re-open, it will typically load the document exactly where I left off. Sometimes it's saved my work and other times it had not.

InDesign 21.3 (2026) Share for Review Comments Unmapped on Desktop
This is an ongoing, years-long problem. When people comment via an Indesign Share for review link, the list of comments appears on the desktop app as unmapped/no pins. However, if you view the link online, you can see the same comments with pins where the commenters dropped them. It's a much more cumbersome workflow having to go to a different window to see all of the feedback. I don't know why this continues to be a problem.

ID grey screen after awake
Already an older version of ID had this bug, but years ago the screen was white grey, now dark greay.
- Mac sleep, 2. Mac awake, 3. all ID screen is dark grey, even if refreshing or changing zoom or position. 4. I can select elements, but I see only the blue selectors, not the content or background. 5. need to quit ID and to restart to work as usual. 6. not seeing the content I sometimes do not know If I should save or not – risking to loose the work.

Wheel of death when placing images
Lately, the spinning wheel has been appearing, especially when I place a photo via drag-and-drop, but also when I use the "Place" command from the menu. When the spinning wheel appears (and stays there), I can close or save the document, but the undo/redo functions no longer work, other functions work limited. After closing all documents, I have to force-quit the application; otherwise, InDesign won’t close. When I reopen it, sometimes it loads previously closed documents with recovery, even though I closed them myself. The "CPU Preview / Preflight Off" mode doesn’t work. I work with local documents (I don’t…

21.2 Acting Strange
I updated to 21.2 and ever since then, I have had these things happen:
1. Freezes (beach ball spinning)
2. Unable to "undo" (the undo is greyed out and Indesign seems to have no memory of the last event
3. Icons get stuck. When I change tools, it still is showing the magnifying glass tool not the selection or type tool. But I acts like that tool is active (so can type text, but shows magnifying glass icon)
4. Is crashing A LOT! And it has been years since I have had any issues with Indeisgn crashing.Anyone know what…

Losing the ability to use 'undo' [Command-Z] function.
I'm frequently losing the ability to use 'undo' [Command-Z] function. It's not all the time, but when it happens I can't undo anything. I have to quit InDesign and re open it to fix it. A few hours later it strikes again. There doesn't seem to be anything obvious triggering this. It's not crashing, it's just not functioning.

close
Freezes when I try to close the program. It will either not close at all, no matter how many force stops/close buttons I hit, or it will completely crash instead of closing safely.

"Repair file" Pops up when trying to 'Save' a file... InDesign closes without saving
When opening an InDesing file with the new 2026 version, the file opens without any issues at all.
No missing links, no missing fonts. Opens OK.When trying to save that file, which was created by previous InDesign version (2025), InDesign encounters an issue while saving. A pop-up asks if I want to "Repair the file". I hit the "Repair" button. InDesign app closes abruptly.
So, I used another way to save the file without 'Saving As', nor replacing the file.
I opened the exact same file made with a previous version of InDesign, hit 'Save as', select IDML, and…

Ongoing performance issues with large InDesign files
We’re running into frequent slowdowns and crashes when working with large InDesign documents (lots of pages, linked assets, complex styles, long text flows). It’s happening across multiple machines, not just one setup.
At Tech Formation, we support teams that depend on InDesign for real production work, and these issues are starting to affect delivery timelines and workflows.
It would be great to know whether this is a known issue and whether there’s any workaround or logging we can enable to help diagnose it.3 votes -

Tables and text randomly disappear in Adobe InDesign document
While working in Adobe InDesign, tables and text frames intermittently disappear from the document, even though their frames and guides are still visible. As shown in the attached image, content that should be displayed (tables and text) is no longer visible on the page layout.
This issue occurs during normal editing and navigation of the document and does not appear to be related to hidden layers or visibility settings. The problem affects document review and editing, making it difficult to verify content accuracy.
