Textbox use auto-size to automate border placement
Under "text frame options" we have "auto-size" which is an amazing feature, but not used to its full potential.
If we combine this with textbox borders, I could automate text boxes with Data Merge on a grand scale.
Most of the groundwork for this feature already exists. All that's left is to be able to set a rectangle to automatically resize to match a textbox.

Data merge should include a "Next Record" feature
Data merge should include a "Next Record" feature, like Word has. I want to merge data into InDesign, but I don't want to duplicate text boxes or pages. I just want to put the placeholders wherever they need to go (like in a table) and merge the data without having a text box for every record.

[ID-4258038] Change the Eyedropper Tool back to default on the tool bar instead of the Color Theme Tool.
The standard Eyedropper Tool used to be the default option on the Tool bar. This was convenient for sampling colors as well as text styles. Now, there is no way to change the default from the Color Theme Tool to the Eyedropper. The Color Theme Tool has its place in Illustrator, but as InDesign is mostly used for text, it is crucial that the Eyedropper Tool is quickly accessible. In my career, I have barely used the Color Theme Tool in InDesign, whereas I use the Eyedropper daily. It is frustrating for my coworkers and I to now change…

Table Cell Strokes
It is something of a chore to select individual strokes in Window 'Cell Options' – Tab 'Strokes & Fills'.
… you need to align exactly the cursor's hotspot (to the pixel) on the stroke you wish to select or deselect… and often need to click a few times if you're slightly off. I often need to have, let's say all horizontal strokes selected in a table… so I have to deselect all vertical strokes.Currently, we can double-clic to select, say the outside borders, or the inside.
But it would be nice to have buttons that would:

Endnotes--better coordination Word to InDesign
In the newer versions of ID, they very helpfully allow endnotes to be linked to the numbers in the text (so that, if you delete the number, the note itself is also deleted, and all renumber accordingly). However, when you import/place a Word file of text that has endnotes, the endnotes get placed into a separate text box, and it is obnoxious. I want to put the endnotes in the same text flow as everything else, but you can’t copy and paste because the notes are linked, and the numbers will get deleted from the text if you try to…

Drag an image directly from the links panel to the page.
There's something i'd LOVE to see in inDesign.
Imagine, you design a document, with different images, logos, etc. They come from libraries, folders, bridge, you name it.
Now you realize a logo you used on page 1 needs to replace a logo on page 24. But not ALL logos. And you want to do it visually by dragging and dropping.
You'd need to copy, paste inside, or use the relink command. And may be need to dig in your CC libraries to find it again.
Same thing if you'd like to place it somewhere else. You have all your links…

Interactive Form Fields need to be fully editable (i.e. Color, paragraph styles, Sample Text)
When exporting an Interactive PDF from InDesign, we still need to be able to assign Colors and Paragraph Styles AND retain the FPO copy we have typeset in the Text box.
For example, in my attached screenshot, when I choose to export as an Interactive PDF, I need to see all of the copy within the box show up exactly as shown. I have it set up so that it still feels slightly designed (despite being a form) and worded so that the client can follow along and replace certain parts with specific language. Right now upon export, this copy…

Convert PDF to INDD
Adobe Acrobat Pro DC can edit PDF's read images and text, and it is possible to edit, so why is this function not available in Adobe Indesign? Indesign has more control and the only feature that will needed to be added is detecting strokes/filled objects converting filled lines or shapes to one to the other.
637 votesConvert PDF to InDesign (beta) feature is available in InDesign 20.3 Release in English (North America) and English (International) languages.
More details on this feature are available at https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/convert-pdf-to-indesign-file.html
When a PDF is opened in this release of InDesign, an option to submit your feedback on the conversion is shown. Please let us know your feedback.

Keep an object in place when aligning with another object
In Illustrator if you have two objects selected, and then alt-click one, the object that was alt-clicked will stay in place when you align them together. Having this feature in InDesign would be helpful

Add the Ability to turn off hover scrolling
Hover Scrolling lets you interact with the dropdown menus without ever having to click on them. Sounds cool, right?
Normally, this is not a problem, because you can easily see what has been changed because you've got an object selected. But when working with conditional text, the conditional text indicator visibility is a GLOBAL setting, and thus, hover scrolling over it can change your document, even with nothing selected. And if you're not on a page with conditional text. you'd never even know that your document got changed, until you send it to print!
This has been plaguing…

Feature Request: AI-Powered Image to Alt Text Generation for Accessibility in InDesign
First of all, I want to thank you for the incredible new AI-powered features in InDesign, especially the ability to generatively expand images. This is a powerful tool that has significantly enhanced my workflow, and I greatly appreciate how Adobe continues to push the boundaries of design technology.
I would like to suggest a potential new feature that would further improve accessibility and efficiency in design. Specifically, it would be immensely helpful to have an AI-powered feature that generates alternative text (alt text) for images directly within InDesign. This would be particularly valuable for creating accessible documents, as alt …

Custom numbered footnotes
One feature is really missing from the beginning - and this a free style numbering (endnotes and footnotes as well).
So many times we get the Asterisk (*) as start, followed by numbered footnotes (1, 2, 3, 4, …). So it would be helpful to define something like this: *, # (<-- which means, first Asterisk and numbered from up there, etc.) Or *, o, # etc.
Example for placed footnote text:
- Temp o Temp 1 Temp 2 Temp 3 Temp . . .
It could be implemented in the footnote area of the text container (Command/STRG B) and…

Alignment-options when creating Forms via InDesign
Now it's possible to set fonts/typefaces but I am missing the alignment for the text (right, left, centered) and furthermore the format-selection (currency, numbers, date, percent ...)

Title.indb as a text variable accessible for any document part of the book
Title.indb as a text variable for any document part of the book. Sometime when a book is printed (especially direct to print proof) it's difficult to know (remember- follow) which version you're at without putting the info inside the book itself. Having a text variable that updates automatically would be nice, you place it - you forget it - one less thing to check when printing

Paste Variable text
In Find/Change have an option to paste a variable. I will often search for a word and then need to paste a variable. Currently I have to right-click the results, choose Insert Variable, and then choose the variable.
Do that 10 times when a writer forgets to use a variable, replace all would be great.

Add preflight correction options like converting text to paths from Acrobat to the PDF export dialogue.
I often have to open documents in Acrobat just to convert the text into paths. Doing it in InDesign is not an option for me as it I often need the text to be editable in the InDesign file after exporting.
This could be either a single checkbox called convert text to paths or even a new Tab called PDF Corrections beneath Advanced, Security, Summary, etc where all the pdf correction options from Acrobats preflight menu are.

Create a more functional font menu please!
Make the fonts menu more functional.
Show larger font samples
Let user see selected text or custom text as sample text (instead of just using "sample")
Ability to sort between serif, san-serif, decorative, handwritten, etc. Even if this means user needs to create "tags" to organize their own font libraries.See the typekit website or any website that sells fonts. Do it like that.
12 votesThe above functionality apart from having a different Sample text for font is now available in the latest version of InDesign i.e. InDesign CC 2018

The footnote in journal layout
Please add the ability to make the text of the footnote in a separate frame, that would be able to use footnotes in a complex, journal layout. Often there are situations when some text frames, each one has footnotes and the text of these footnotes were at the bottom of the page, separately, and the numbering in turn.
