It'd be so much more efficient to be able to put in a default value in editable form text fields in InDesign vs Acrobat.
I work on a creative team building editable form fields in InDesign for interactive pdf export. It'd be so much more efficient to be able to put in a DEFAULT VALUE OPTION with the correct InDesign formatting in editable form text fields in InDesign vs the limited option in Acrobat.

Add the ability to data merge text files like images
I am data merging a document that includes both images and tables of information in adobe tagged text files. Currently, the @ symbol is used for image fields, would it be possible for the # or & to be used for text files?

Global Text Edit Across Multiple File Instances
A way to update one Master File, that populates multiple files.
One product > multiple instances
By changing text on "1" it would update the same text in the same spot for the different instances "1a,1b,1c"
1 > 1a > 1b > 1c

Copy/Paste text formatting
It would be nice to be able to copy and paste formatting from/to text like you can copy and paste settings from one photo to the next in Lightroom. This way you would not have to create styles for every formatting choice that repeats.

Make the color of the hidden conditional text indicator match the color assigned to the condition
Currently, the color of the hidden conditional text indicator is orange. But why orange?why not something more useful? We are able to assign specific colors to each condition, so why not extend those colors to the hidden conditional text indicator as well? Right now, in order to see which condition is applied to hidden conditional text, we have to hover over it and hope that the tooltip pops up. Like this: http://documentgeek.blogspot.com/2011/06/how-to-see-hidden-conditional-text-in.html
But if there are number of hidden conditions, that trick doesn't work. At the very least, color-code the eyeball in the story editor. In the…

Conversion of Text Encoding
InDesign is missing a built-in function to convert different Chinese text encoding, e.g. Big5 to GBK or vice versa
Right now, the only way to do it is to do the conversion of encoding elsewhere and paste the text back in InDesign. But then all formatting will be lost

Ability to sync text variables via Creative Cloud Libraries
Similar to another suggestion here requesting the ability to import .csv content as variables: it would also be useful to be able to insert a text variable into an InDesign document from an external source such as Creative Cloud Libraries. This would enable a simple central location for variable information (eg prices, product specs etc) that could then be used across multiple documents. Updating the central data would then update all 'linked' variables when an InDesign document is opened, removing the need to manually update and the subsequent risk of human error.

Text Variables should support super/sub script
Text variables should support incidental superscript and subscript. Currently, even with using GREP in the paragraph style which defines the super- or sub-script and placing on a master page, the text variable does not support these formats in actual placement on document pages. Very elementary feature that should be supported.

'Text-color' as a swatch option in Paragraph Shading and Paragraph Borders
Would allow you to apply a swatch change (manually or via a character style) to the text and have it propagate to the border/shade.
As an example - it would be good if you've got a black boxed number, that takes the border from the paragraph border and you want to overlay it on a dark image, and so switch the text colour to white.

artificial intelligence for text
Wouldn't it be a nice idea to have InDesign apply some artificial intelligence for looking at the text? Like what ChatGPT can do, but then integrated into InDesign. Checking the complexity, readability, Colorcontrast, tone-of-voice etc of your text. Would love to see that. Or suggestions on how to solve readability-issues for accessible PDF! Yeah!

Hide Selection handles en text marquee
When designing, the inverted selected text is disturbing. Please add a shortcut to switch it off temporarily (like in Ae and Ai).

The source of the alt text should default to the alt text from the image.
The source of the alt text should default to the alt text FROM the image. Don't make me have to change it for every image.

Swap graphics/images…
I know it exists as a script BUT i've been waiting a loooong time to get a very basic SWAP function between 2 inDesign frames'content.
Say I have 2 frames on a page, one contains image A, the other contains image B.
I select the 2 frames, in object menu, I have one option (usually grayed out if 0, 1, 3 or more objects are selected) (+ same in contextual right-click menu).
That option says "swap images" (in french "permuter les images").
Everything in one frame goes to the other.
That implies groups of items.

When you highlight text - then select something else - it would be really cool if the same text was selected when you went back to it
When you highlight a block of text - then select a different element - it would be really cool if the text was highlighted when you went back to the text box and selected it.

Justify: Text Automatically Resizes
Especially for headlines, I often will manually resize whole lines of text to fill the same width. I use this technique so much that I'd like an option to do it automatically.
This feature is actually offered on Instagram stories, albeit imperfectly (I've attached a screenshot). You can adjust the line breaks by changing the text size or adding the breaks manually.

Spell Check to start from selected text or text box
The ability to Spell Check to start from selected text or text box would be a real time saver.
Maybe add an on/off toggle to see spelling errors when needed.
I'm a horrible speller and sometimes just want to check what I just wrote not the entire document. I end up copying and pasting into Google which these days really confuses the (Artificial Intelligence).
Please consider this for Illustrator too.
Thank you.

Ability to define a swatch that has a transparent gradient.
I want to create a swatch in the swatches palette that goes from X% color to no color. The same end result as applying a gradient feather effect but in a swatch so if I apply that swatch to an underline option in a text frame that is sitting above a non-solid color/image, the fade goes transparent and we don't see it fade to white.

Refine "No Break" by providing suboptions
While hyphenation preferences can be refined at the Paragraph (style) level, Character (style) options only provide a boolean “No Break” attribute which prevents line breaks whatever the location of the text in the layout.
Note, for example, that “Hyphenate Across Column” is available as a paragraph option while the user may actually want to turn on/off column breaks from within a character style. The “No Break” attribute is then too harsh, since it fully disallows line breaking.
Suppose a ITEMS character style is associated to proper names or book titles. We may want to allow regular line breaking for these…

The 'character direction' function for Arabic text layout
The 'character direction' function does not exist in the new version of Indesgin (2024). As a result, I cannot layout an Arabic text correctly. How can I do this?

Text wrap around anchored objects needs to work according to settings, regardless of where the anchor is placed.
Text wrap refuses to wrap properly around my anchored objects regardless of anchor placement in the paragraph or text wrap offset settings.
This causes the anchored object to overlap the text and/or have inconsistent margin offset around the object. It's erratic and inconsistent among the various objects, even though they all have the exact same object style applied.
Some of the objects wrap a little better than others - at least they're not overlapping on top of text - but the wrap margins are still inconsistent. Not a single object wraps how I believe it should based on the style…
