Assemble book for printing
I use French InDesign 2020 in Windows 10 environment, mainly for book editing.
There is an annoying bug when I assemble the book for printing. InDesign asks for a location to assemble the different files, incorporate the fonts, images, etc. It proposes as folder name "Dossier Book name" (Dossier meaning Folder in French). It is not possible to save in an existing folder (created for instance by a former assembly), the programme asking for a non-existing folder. Share Illustrator Gradients with Indesign via CC Libraries
According to many sources online, in the old days, you were able to copy and paste gradients from Illustrator to InDesign. Now, when I copy an simple object with a complex gradient, it comes into InDesign split into many tiny objects, each with its own swatch. Totally unworkable.
Really, I should be able to save a gradient swatch to CC Library so that I can access it across Creative Cloud. Because that's what Library is for, right?
I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature that should be there.
7 votesYou can add the object having the gradient swatch to the CC Libraries as a ‘Graphic’ in Illustrator. Then you can choose Place Linked/Place Copy in CC Libraries to use that object in InDesign. At this time, it is yet not possible to add Gradient/Pattern swatches to CC Libraries in Illustrator, so you have to add the object to the CCLib and then place that object in other apps like InDesign.

Microsoft Publisher to InDesign
We often are provided with Microsoft Publisher files to work with from our customers and need to work on these within InDesign. As we are running on MAC we can't open them. Would be great if InDesign had a built in method of reading .pub files.

When relinking files, prefer to show entire filename instead of path
When relinking files a dialogue oops up where the relinked file is selected. At the top of the dialogue the path to the file is shown. If there isn't enough space for the entire path, including filename, it is condensed by removing some text in the middle. If there is enough room to show the entire filename that should be shown. The path to the file is not as important as the name of the file, especially when relinking multiple files which are often in the same folder and I am already looking in that folder.

InDesign Book (indb) icon
The icon for indd and indb are almost identical. when looking at a folder full of indesign docs it can be a bit difficult to quickly recognize the book file.
Would be nice if the book file was a different color.

XML structures and footnotes/endnotes
This is a point which was subject of lot of discussion since years in several forums. Even this uservoice mentions it (partly) sometime but obviously it hasn't been considered at all.
In InDesign, a footnote can't contain xml structures.
In InDesign, it is not possible to map an xml element to the footnote object.
This is really weird, since:
a) mapping XML element to an InDesign object is something exiting already for tables thanks to attribute aid:table. So why not having set an attribute aid:note, with values "footnote" and "endnote" and implementing this?

A way to chose where you would like to save your links, INDD file, etc when "packaging" a file.
When working on projects with multiple large books, we would appreciate a way to "package" a file, yet save all of the links for each book in a Master Links Library folder, fonts in a Master Fonts Library folder, and PDFs in a designated folder.
Additionally, it would be awesome if there was a way to preflight a file and ensure that all links are linking to a specific master links folder.

DATA MERGE
Importing an image via .CSV or .TXT file requires the use of an absolute @IMAGE link, it would be very convenient, for file sharing purposes, for this link to recall the files from the folder where the INDESING file resides, using a relative @IMAGE link, using a relative @IMAGE link.
EXAMBLE:
Volumes:BK2:PACK HD:CLIENT:PROJECT 1:PACK:LINK:file.ai (ABSOLUTE LINK)

Collaborate files in the start "Workspace" (quick shortcut)
In the Workspace "start' you can show your indesign files from de cloud. Called CC-Files. I like this feature. It works fine, but don't work with shared (collaborate) folder.
I see al my cc-documents in the cloud, except the files in the shared (collaborate) folder.Please make it possible. Otherwise, the idea of the cloud does not work.

Robust Indexing Software
We need a more robust indexing software for those of us in book publishing (nonfiction). Due to the finicky nature of having to manually find and enter every index entry, InDesign's indexing software is only plausible for simple indexes that are done infrequently. Because of this, my publishing company adopted a plug-in, Sonar Bookends, a long time ago. Sonar works quite well, but this has made our use of InCopy impossible, as Sonar Bookends was not designed to work with InCopy and is causing it to regularly crash. master page & character style search function
Add On for Organized ID Files:
Search function for Master Pages and character/Paragraph... styles. In addition to the suggested folders, a search function would be great.Edit 1.1.2021:
For very large Indesign files and especially for accessibility productions, it would be an immense advantage and make work easier if you could find the sample pages as well as the format templates (paragraphs, characters, tables, etc.) more quickly using the search function.

Export a specific color separation directly to PDF without having to print to file first.
Let's say you have a file that's CMYK plus one spot color (let's say Pantone 123). You want to create a PDF file for print that is only the separation of the Pantone 123 spot color. What I have to do now is create the color separation first by printing to file, then distill the resulting .ps file.
Can there be a way to directly export the color separation by using Export to Print PDF?
Maybe there is a way to do this already, but I have not been able to find any info online on how to do this.…

EPUB CSS output could be improved quite a lot
So I’m currently in charge of Readium CSS, which is a project related to Readium 2 (link: https://github.com/readium/readium-2), a complete rewrite of Readium SDK, which you may know in the form of a Chrome app – this Chrome app is actually advised by InDesign engineers in the InDesign forums whenever a rendering issue pops up so I assume InDesign engineers know it exists.

Share for Review - Option for reviewers to toggle single page and spread view.
It would be great if the review online interface had the option to view the project as spreads or as single pages.
My coworkers who review prefer to make notes/revisions as single pages, but the publications I create are designed as spreads. It's a pain to go through and share as single pages and then move them back to spreads as I work. It would save me from exporting extra PDF samples to show full layouts when there is so much back and forth.

Toggles in Dashboard for published content
Introduce zwo Switches/toggles for "Hide the Share and Embed code" and "Allow PDF-Download" within the dashboard for an already published document so it doesn’t have to be republished every time one wants to change any of these options?

Update Book panel
Please update the Book files to work more like FrameMaker.
For example, one can group files together, use folders (to treat separate files as one chapter), set the pagination settings separate for each file (start on right, start on next, make page count even, etc.)
InDesign hasn't had any major long document feature updates for some time. (Endnotes doesn't count as a long document feature since they do not currently work for a book. <g>)

Style hierarchy
It would be nice if you could easily see as one of the views of styles (paragraph, character, and object) a hierarchy of which styles are based on each other. Like a cascade of styles. I work on long documents and books that use LOTS of styles and besides the normal view and alphabetical view, it would be nice to be able to "sort" by hierarchy, perhaps with the swivel arrow, like when you have different styles in grouped folders. Set asset path base location in preferences
Allow the user to set the base relative path location in preferences instead of having them set to absolute all the time. This will allow complete folder structures within Create Cloud Folders to be shared to other user without all the assets link breaking all the time and will avoid the need to send packaged files all the time.

These messages sucks. Why keeping the reasons in secret?
Which file cannot copied? On which page/object failed the export?
Users spend many working hours to find the problem, which ID have to know, but don't publish.1 vote
