  1. Smart Text Reflow + Data Merge

When using Data Merge, if text is too long to fit on the standard 2-page Master page spread, then InDesign should automatically create additional pages (either by repeating the Master spread, or allowing Master spreads to consist of more than 2 pages) utilizing Smart Text Reflow to continue the text thread instead of oversetting the text.

My personal use case: I am working with a teacher at a university to create a literature magazine, and need to compile multiple long-form submissions into one document. Since up to 200 students could be submitting work, it is important that…

  2. Indesign: Add Previous and Next Buttons in Text Variables input screen

Right now you have to open, save and close each text variable. Please add Previous and Next Buttons in the text variable input screen so you don't have to open and closes each time to edit/add.

  3. Object Styles: Size and Position relative to spine

When setting an object's position with this feature, one must choose left or right for X position. With Anchored Objects, we can choose for that to be "relative to spine" instead. So instead of "left" or "right", we can choose "inside" or "outside".
This would allow for symmetry on a spread. Example: an object could then extend from the spine, beyond the page edge, through the bleed, whether on a left or right page.

  4. Align to page when only one object is selected

It would be helpful if the align command defaulted to align to page when only one object is selected. There is no risk of confusion as an object cannot be aligned with itself :)

This would remove a lot of unnecessary switching back and forth in the align options, as the default use case at least for me is align to selection.

  5. Move page and articles between documents (accessibility)

If I design a page of my document seperately, I want to be able to move the severed page into my document, and also import the articles included in that document.
It should be optional, like the option to keep layers intact when copying objects between documents - maybe with a setting that allows me to say "copy articles" and a checkmark I can set.

    For expample:
Right now, if I design a complex starting page for a long document seperate from the rest of the document (for example if a colleague creates the document), I have to re-do the…

  6. Package certain pages from an InDesign file.

It'd be great to be able to package certain pages from an InDesign file. Eg.: four pages in the middle of a 230 page document. Package a working file, fonts, art, PDF etc.

  7. Link to a Specific Page in external PDF File saved on the local disc -> choose between relative/absolute link

It would be nice to have an option to open external file (pdf) saved on the local disc/folder on the specific page - the same way as url link ('#page=xx'). And it's also necessary to have an option select between relative/absolute link. If the file is distributed and the parent directory gets changed, it has to be still able to use the relative link (of course in case the original structure has not been changed).

  8. Adds the option to create sidenotes on Indiesign

Adding a built-in option to create side-notes in Indiesign, such comments that come next to the text where they are numbered. In addition, there will be control over whether to insert a separator between them and the main text, as well as control of the numbering style, and the paragraph or character style applied to them. Adding or subtracting one comment will update the number and position of the other comments, and if one comment goes beyond the page boundaries - move its content to the next page.
Also, the designer should be given the choice of three options…

  9. Indesign Autosave

An autosave feature in Indesign would be a great addition. This could be added under the file handling menu with some options for it. A slider that allows you to set the intervals of the autosave. It would be a great addition to the auto recovery, you'd be surprised how often people forget to hit save or close it and accidentally not save when prompted.

  10. Improve Screen Display Quality - 4K Related

I've recently upgraded to a 4K monitor. When working on InDesign documents, the type is not "sharp". I am running in the High Quality Display setting, the text and graphics are not sharp. If I run the display driver at 150% this problem exists, if I run at 100%, the type and graphics are very sharp - as expected. So this is a Windows related issue.

Could the 150% magnification be ignored for the page display, but remain for the toolbars, etc.

I have "old" eyes from too much time in front of these monitors!

    Thanks

  11. Make guides work outside of the page like Illustrator

Self explanatory really - Make guides work outside of the page like Illustrator, so you can lay things out on the pasteboard accurately before you put it on your document.

  12. Scale type to fill text frame

When preparing newspaper or newsletter style layouts, it's quite common to scale headlines to fill available space.
It would be great if there was a way to automatically fit type to the frame it resides in, by scaling font size. I'm sure this would be very useful for data merge scenarios too.

  13. Apply 2 Masters (spread) to a Single Page (tabloid)

There are currently no solutions that I am aware of to sync a Left and Right Master into a larger tabloid page size. This is different from simply using a parent relationship among several master pages. A larger page size (digital friendly) cannot be complied from smaller master pages (print friendly). The ability to apply multiple master pages or master page items as "zones" would probably be ideal as it would allow flexibility for more customization on different page sizes.

  14. Make it easier to reorder and group pages.

Not that I want inDesign to be Keynote, but they're kicking butt in the page re-ordering department. I make presentations a lot in inDesign, and re-ordering, nesting and duplicating pages is a huge pain.
In Keynote you can move them around, group them, duplicate sections, nest them and a few other things, with no problem. inDesign's pages window is due for a reboot.

  15. Would like to be able to apply formatting to text variables

You should be able to somehow apply formatting to text variables. (See screenshot: TextVariable.png). The running header on the right hand page is based on the "chapter title" on the left hand page, but the italics can't be applied. It would be nice if you could apply a GREP style, or even a nested style, to the paragraph style that is applied to running header.

  16. Allow placement of PDFs/images by actual page size, not their bounding box.

Enable an option to place or drag-and-drop PDF and image files based on their actual page dimensions (MediaBox or defined size), rather than defaulting to bounding box-based fitting—the following alignment of such is unnecessary hustle. Ideally with user-selectable placement mode (bounding box vs. full page).

  17. Text Box Auto Size Type

I think we should have the ability to lock a text box so as we type in it, it automatically typesets the copy to always fit in the textbox.

  18. Include The Page / Spread Geometric Bounds When Generating InDesign Snippets

We are parsing InDesign Snippets that are dragged and dropped onto our application.

Part of this process involves us translating the page item coordinates so that 0,0 is top left.

With the metadata contained in the snippet, it is not possible to perform this translation accurately since the snippet doesn't tell us the dimensions of the spread / page it belonged to.

We partially work around this limitation today by having a page item that is the full bounds of the page which is dragged and dropped along with the other page items. However, would prefer to have something more…

  19. Support "Go-to-Page Button" interactivity in a PDF

It would be nice to create a BUTTON that links to another page in the document (PDF).

Don't quite understand why this type of button interactivity is "dropped" in the first place.

  20. Real table footnotes (different from CC2019)

Since CC2019 the user is able to add footnotes inside a table. Such notes are added at the bottom, of the textbox. This behavior does not fit to many needs of designer how need real table footnotes.

    So what is the difference?
Real table footnotes stick to the content of the table.
In this case the note gives some additional information to the table specific content.
Therefore each table should have an own mechanism of numbering that does not mix up with the document footnotes numbering. Additionally the position of table footnotes is most often at the end of the…
