1. I opened my Indesign program and a message asked if I could provide input on how to improve Indesign. Here is my reply.

   I tried to write this response in the "Help Improve Adobe Products" window that opens up on launch of Indesign, but I ran out of space:
   
   Indesign has layer after layer after layer of instructions on how do even the most common things. The problem is that in order to understand one layer, you have to understand at least the terminology and concepts of the other layers. These days, when you open the box for many devices there is a quick set up document included. I recommend that you do something like that. But not with instructional videos. Someitimes you have to watch a video several times to learn a task you make only need to use once. Furthermore, the instructors sometimes use terms that are not known to the viewer. Sometimes their mouse moves too rapidly to follow.

   Here's what I suggest. Configure a very simple numbered sequence for a given task. Make it such that the viewer can do what he needs and then move on, ie without requiring a full education in all the capabilities of the task.

   I suggest you let me send you an example of what I'm speaking of. Perhaps an example of how to change the color of text without having to master the use of swatches.

   Please let me know if this interests you.

2. More control over file name when exporting multiple files (such as PNGs for an animation)

   When exporting images from pages on an inDesign document it names them like this

   document
   document2
   document3
   ..
   document9
   document10

   When you import these same images into Photoshop to make a stack or to start an animation the layers don't appear in the right order because photoshop obviously doesn't understand that the file without a number is the first one, and that document 10 shouldn't follow document1, so they have to be reordered manually. Could you not add a tool so we can ask or files to be called file001, file 002, ... it would save a lot of time

3. Ability to set a layer to high res preview permanently

   It would be great to be able to set a layer to high res preview permanently. So that everytime you opened a document it remembered that Layer 2 for example needs to be high res preview.

   Reason for this: I work with a lot of dies in packaging, and when I link to them they always lose the high res view, but I need the high res view for the die so I can precisely design.

   Yes, I'm aware I can copy and paste the die from illustrator into InDesign, but when you are working with numerous files, it's best to link to one die so it can be changed across all files as needed.

4. Frame / Cell strokes and border-radius more like CSS

   As an extension of the idea 'Allow different coloured/weight strokes for sides of a text box' - I would like this to apply to table cells as well.

   I use InDesign to do high-fidelity web UI mockups. It would be really nice if there were more options which corresponded directly to CSS.

   What we would need is the ability to set a per-object or global equivalent to "box-sizing: border-box", so that stroke weights don't add to the size of a table cell, but always render aligned to the inside.

   Secondly, give regular text frames the same editing ability as table cells, with per-side stroke colours and weights.

   Third, enable border-styles equivalent to CSS standards.

   Fourth, as a convenience, being able to set border-radius on table cells (or even just the outer corners of an entire table) without it affecting inner cell padding would be marvellous; currently we have to hack this by layering a transparent table over a rectangle with rounded corners.

5. Move page and articles between documents (accessibility)

   If I design a page of my document seperately, I want to be able to move the severed page into my document, and also import the articles included in that document.
   It should be optional, like the option to keep layers intact when copying objects between documents - maybe with a setting that allows me to say "copy articles" and a checkmark I can set.

   For expample:
   Right now, if I design a complex starting page for a long document seperate from the rest of the document (for example if a colleague creates the document), I have to re-do the articles after inserting the page into the other document.

6. Generated captions match FULL IPTC from Photoshop

   I’m trying to get those lines from Stock images I buy :

7. Clipping masks with varied transparency

   The ability to apply an image as a clipping mask to another image from within InDesign instead of needing to rely on other software like Photoshop would be really helpful.

   I have hundreds of pages that need editing together with 1 - 3 images per page. Each of these images needs a png applied to them as a clipping mask with the text positioned around them. Currently the only way to do this in InDesign is to import something like a .psd file that you can't make live edits on. Constantly flicking between different software to get the layout right for a page is really time consuming.

   Affinity Publisher allows this really easily by simply right clicking an image in the layers panel and selecting Mask to Below. It would be great to see InDesign implement this is such an easy to use way as well.

   The images show the base black and white png you should be able to apply as a mask to a normal image and the effect it should give you. Currently InDesign's clipping masks don't respect the full transparency of the png because all they really do is change the frame and create a hard border.

8. Don't automatically change view/zoom when editing layer visibility of linked graphics

   Editing the layer visibility of a linked graphic in InDesign causes the zoom level to be automatically adjusted to fit-to-page. This makes it difficult to see the preview image for small graphics that may be hard to see at the full page zoom level.

   If any automatic zoom adjustment is to be made at all (which it should not) it should be to fit the graphic to the window so you can see what you are doing.

10. Watermark-option when pdf-export (interactive) from InDesign

    When you export a pdf-file from InDesign (as an interactive pdf), there should be an option for watermarks.
    With this option you could save time because you don’t have to use Acrobat afterwards or create a new layer in InDesign.

    In Acrobat this option is already available, but with more opportunities (you don't need so many). It would be enough to have the following possibilities:
    - „text of your choice“
    - text scale
    - text opacity
    - text angle (0°, 45°, 90°)

11. Traditional Book Focus

    I write long traditional books with hundreds of black and white text pages. Adobe's focus as a graphics company may be why it misses some important issues for people like me. Editing hundreds of pages of text and incorporating feedback is extremely difficult.

    To accomplish this I have to get the full layout correct with many chapters all in individual files and then create a PDF version of the book. of course, when viewed two up the pages don' align properly if I don't insert a blank page as the first page using DC. Simple fix, give me a proofing copy to eliminate this step.

    Second, when I get that edited pdf file back I have to put the two side by side and go through the entire book chapter file by chapter file and painstakingly match the feedback to the chapter. Of course, you only let me view my pages two up so I have to tediously use my mouse to move back and forth even on my 32 inch screen. Let me view my pages in editing mode, one at a time and scroll down just with the arrow keys.

    Better yet, build a proofing copy of the book where I see all elements of the book together at one time and allow me to make all edits there.

    Even better yet, interactively layer the PDF edits I receive in this proofing copy so I have everything I need right in one document view to make all the edits.

    You need to give me more power to work on the book as a book and stop limiting me to working file by file. I have lots of chapters, front matter, TOC, Glossary, appendix, marketing pages, etc. It is a massive pain to deal with each of these as an independent file with independent formatting, even if you have improved the syncing of styles and master pages. I need one book wide set of styles and master pages.

    Finally, to end my editing driven mad rant, built on the editing copy discussed above, give me a full index generating tool with the ability to build a master multi-book list of terms. The only thing worse than editing a 300 page book is building the index. Your concept of coding each instance of the word manually in a 300 page document isn't even doable at this scale.

12. Show bleed between spreads or make it possible to mix spreads and single pages in the same InDesign document

    In a magazine you always have a combination of spreads and single pages for separate topics. In a InDesign document you can't work with a combination of spreads and single pages.

    In order to print a PDF by an offset printer, 3 mm bleed is required all around a page. Further it is required that all the pages in the PDF are exported as single pages with bleed and crop marks. This works fine for a spread that has one big image that overlaps both pages of a spread. But not for a spread that has an seperate page layout for the left and right page (because they have different topics). Then you can't have a correct bleed for the images that lie against the inside of the page edge. InDesign is using the part of the image on the other page in the bleed! See screenshot. It is not possible to fix this by changing the layer order.

    The solution is simple: InDesign must show the bleed between the pages of a spread and fill the bleed correctly when exporting to an PDF if you choose to export as single pages with bleed and show crop marks. Or it must be possible to mix spreads en single pages in a InDesign document.

14. Rethinking pages with an infinite pasteboard and multi-user collaboration

    Let us bring InDesign into an open and more collaborative world.

    The individual pasteboard and contained page structure of InDesign are very constraining. It is time for a different approach to how we do page layout.

    Let us move to an infinite style pasteboard canvas (a la Illustrator, or Adobe XD, Figma) where your imagination can run wild! Think of it as a blown-up version of the Pages Panel with the same click-to, snap-to rearrange functionality, but without the extra layer of InDesign UI baggage.

    • Pages would function the same way with a left-to-right, top-to-bottom order, snapping layouts into the proper page arrangement.
    • A visual thread can bind groups of pages together to maintain pagination and order.
    • The same thread could double as the indicator of the document's spine for printed matter and the starting point for the measurement ruler.
    • Master Pages would be more like how they are presented in the Page Panel, prepending the pages, but could live contextually, presented only when prompted.

    With this addition, it would be amazing to (fingers crossed) bring collaborative editing into the fold. Opening up the pasteboard makes working with other contributors fun, effective, and overall time-saving. Teams can work in tandem to concept out a project, work on specific areas of the design between page layout, copy editing, artwork creation, and overseeing the creation from afar. If anyone has used Figma, you know how great collaborative features would be if brought to InDesign. Forget about cobbled together documents with varying pages, typographic and object styles, and separate applications like InCopy. No more lone star designers feeling the weight of impending deadlines because “there can only be one” person in the doc at a time.

    InDesign would also become a better educational tool, allowing instructors to showcase typographic concepts and demonstrate page layout.

    A different approach to how we view layout structure and design in InDesign's, plus the ability to work together in a single document would evolve InDesign into a more intuitive and productive software.

    Let us bring InDesign into an open and more collaborative world.

15. Place Images Behind Text Without Outlines

    Description:
    In Adobe InDesign, there is currently no option to place images behind text without converting the text to outlines or paths. In Photoshop, this is easily achieved using layer masks and clipping masks. It would be highly beneficial to have a similar feature in InDesign, allowing users to place images directly behind text that can still be edited (font, size, and content) without converting it to outlines.

    Benefits for Users:

    Increased flexibility and efficiency when working with text and images
    Ability to maintain the editability of the text (users can continue to adjust font, size, and wording)
    More intuitive design options, especially for users familiar with both Photoshop and InDesign
    Reduces the need for complex workarounds and saves time by allowing direct, flexible adjustments to text and image placement
    Feature Suggestion:
    Introduce a new option allowing users to use text as a transparent "mask" through which an underlying image layer is visible. This could be implemented as a "Layer Mask" or "Image Mask" feature, functioning similarly to clipping masks in Photoshop.

16. Lossless GIFs, Further Customizable Shapes, Added Photoshop Tools, Improved Publish Online

    My wish is that InDesign is bolstered with all the presentation design features necessary to compete against Canva / Figma / ReadyMag / Google Slides. Here are just a few suggestions:

    1. GIFs (or any media) should not revert to it's original form when published online. GIFs with rounded corners, GIFs filling shapes, GIFs blended with other layers - should have all the same editing effects as a still image.

    2. All preset shapes should be able to be adjusted smoothly and intuitively into others - and still capable of being filled with imagery / text.

    3. PLEASE add more of photoshop's design tools to InDesign. Such as perspective warp / free transform / noise / liquify / 3D text elements. I'd love to be able to further customize the style of text and imagery all within InDesign without having to spend time creating elements outside it.

    4. Finally, please allow further customizing of documents when published online, such as: Scrolling horizontally / vertically through document, lossless effects, category jumping, customizable links, comment / edit suggestions on slides.

17. Please standardize key commands between the Adobe apps, specifically Indesign and Photoshop

    type layer commit in PS: Cmd Enter
    type layer commit in InDesign: esc
    (the above is maddening, since in PS, esc undoes everything in the type layer)

    scaling images in PS: with latest update, no need to hold Shift to scale proportionately
    scaling in Indesign: you must hold Shift to scale proportionately

    I'm sure there are others but these 2 are my personal grievances.

18. Hold Alt when dragging from Bridge/Explorer/Finder to pop the 'Import options' dialogue for that file placement

    QoL improvement - would allow you to skip using the menu interface when you just want to set PDFs/AI to include bleed or not - or when you want a specific page or layer from a paginated or layer file type.

19. Option to lock text box position only, with text remaining editable

    I would love the ability to lock the position of text boxes in a layout, while still allowing editing of the text contents. (Similar to the multiple types of layer lock in Photoshop).

    This would be useful for the template documents I make and then share with collaborators. Other users edit the text, but sometimes accidentally nudge text boxes out of place that should be consistent in placement. I use Object Styles to check placement, but it's time-consuming to check each text box in a document with 100+ pages.

20. Use Mobile Device to Show Palettes

    I posted this in the wrong place (XD). Sorry if I seem to be putting this on blast.
    I've been hoping for this for a long time, and I hope others agree.

    A feature that would increase my workflow in a major way is this:

    Is there a way you could create the ability to use a mobile device to display actionable palettes?

    I use a two display setup on my desktop. When I travel I have to use my laptop which means I can't have very many palettes available without using up my project workspace on screen.

    What if I could connect my mobile device via usb or bluetooth and have actionable palettes displayed there. I could have several palettes onscreen on a tablet, or on a phone, then I could just swipe left or right to the palette I wanted. I could then select the layer, color swatch, or whatever, and have that action occur on the app on my laptop.

    That way I can maximize my work-space on the laptop screen.

    I really hope others agree and this gets upvoted to implementation, it would be awesome.
