OpenType features bug, missing glyphs on PDF export and convert to outlines
I've run into a bug when converting text to outlines, and PDF export, relating to OpenType Features.
I have a font, Chartwell, that has worked perfectly in InDesign for 13+ years. I recently received this bug report from a customer, but am able to recreate it on my end.
In InDesign’s UI, everything still seems to work correctly. However, when exporting a PDF or converting the text to outlines, some glyphs disappear completely. (See image)
The font uses complex Discretionary Ligatures to pull off substituting pie chart shapes. The issue doesn't appear for all discretionary ligatures, but something about this specific feature code is triggering something in InDesign? I’ve done some debugging, but can’t find the exact thing that is triggering it, although it may be related to changing text colors breaking context in a substitution.
I believe the issue in InDesign, since this hasn’t been an issue in the past, doesn’t show up in Illustrator, and only happens on PDF export and creating outlines. I also believe I’m following the OpenType Feature spec correctly. (See second image for a simplified example of the feature code)
I've created a simplified example InDesign file and OTF that shows the issue. I’m happy to send this over or talk directly to engineers, or help debug this further. Thanks

InDesign becomes non-responsive
Since updating to 19.4, InDesign often becomes non-responsive during normal work. UI items become grayed out and I have to click on document tabs multiple times to switch documents. I cannot edit things – nothing happens when I click in a document. I have to save documents (thank goodness that still works) and restart InDesign to get it back to normal
4 votesWe have released InDesign 2025(v20.2.0.036) with many stability fixes. We recommend you upgrade to the latest version (if you’re not already using it) as it is more robust.
If you are still facing this issue even after updating it, please send the following information to santalwa@adobe.com :

Missing library links cause repeating error message
When links are in an inaccessible CC Library, instead of "Missing" (red dot in status column) the links are "Waiting" (stopwatch icon in status column).
This also causes repeated errors "This file is already open by another user or another application. This file may be stored on a network server and cannot be opened until the user closes it."
So far, the only path forward is to repeatedly dismiss the error and try to relink the artwork before the error re-appears. This has to be done for each "missing" link.4 votes -
slowdown
Indesign is slow on opening and closing documents. I have reset preferences, installed the app and reinstalled, disabled plugins...everything I can think of to make it better. It's almost unusable. The forums are no help, I've tried the GPU toggle and their suggestions. It just sits there. This video doesn't show the spinning beachball but I get when opening or closing documents. It has destroyed my workflow and speed. What is there to do?

Documents not showing when changing screens.
When disconnecting my MacBook Pro from my Apple Studio Display open documents are not showing on the laptop screen - only blank grey screen. I can mark its content but nothing but bounding boxes are visible. Have to shut down all documents and start all over.

current page marker font malfunction if 3 digits or more
The third digit and beyond in the "current page number" marker is distorted in certain fonts, and almost appears to be an old style number (shifted down and squished), even when I set the font's Figure Style to "Proportional Lining" under Paragraph Style > OpenType Features > Figure Style. In fact, it also seems to do it in automated footnote reference numbers, where control of the Figure Style doesn’t seem to work either. However, when I just type out the number using the same style, it appears correct. This issue appears to be in Adobe InDesign 2024 (19.3), but when I got back to ID 2023 (18.5.2) the issue disappears.
This is a HUGE issue because I am a book designer, and most of the books I design are go into 3 digit page numbers or more -- and if I can't control the look of the font, then it forces me to go back to ID 2023 to make it work. It doesn't appear to be an issue in all fonts, but for the ones I tested, it seems to be in ones that have Figure Style options under the OpenType options (such as Proportional vs. Tabular, Lining vs. Old Style, etc.)
- Version: Adobe InDesign 19.3 (v. Adobe InDesign 18.5.2)
- Steps to reproduce the issues: Create a document that is length of 100 pages or more. Add a "current page marker" on the parent page. (I made an example on pages 208-209 in the attached documents. Apply a paragraph style for a folio that has a font that has options. (I used “Adelle” from the Adobe Fonts library for my examples.) It seems like anything above 3 digits, the third digit and beyond are distorted or don’t seem to be the correct Figure Style.
- Expected result: I expect to be able to control the Figure Style of an OpenType font within the paragraph style and not have this distorted character on the third digit and beyond in automated numbering – both the current page marker and the automated footnote reference.
- Actual result: Distorted digits anything the third digit or beyond, even when the OpenType > Figure Style settings are changed.
- I have attached 2 test files and a screenshot, one from 2023 where everything appears normal and the other from 2024 (see pages 208-209 in both docs for an example of the difference).
I don't seem to be able to upload my test InDesign files -- so if somebody could please help I can send them to you.

Fix the touchpad
Just fix the touchpad please. I've already discussed it In detail on the Adobe community (https://shorturl.at/hAPZ8), but the touchpad is not working well at all. Now it's just less worse than 19.0 but still not working properly. You can't pinch to zoom, unlike Illustrator for example, and in general, it's not smooth at all. Trying to scroll through a project is a challenge; it scrolls in jumps with almost zero control over it. Centering the project on the PC is impossible without control 0.

Color Profile Warnings when copying Objects and Text within the same Document
Mismatching color profile warnings are very helpful when copying objects between documents with different profiles, which is why this is an always-on option for me.
However, for some time now, such warnings seem to pop up randomly when I copy text between documents with the same profile settings, and sometimes even when copying text from one text box to another within the same document.
My understanding is that this is a bug, as live text in an INDD cannot have different profiles. Is there a way to avoid these warnings and still get them when they are necessary (copying between separate documents)?

InDesign Window Keeps Moving
I keep running into issues with my InDesign application window moving around. The window continually resizes itself slightly or moves to the side of the monitor (cutting off access to some of the tools) when I haven't tried to resize it. This isn't a 'once in a while' issue; it's happening consistently, multiple times a session.
I'm running Indesign 2024 on a MacBook Pro with Apple M2 Pro Chip and macOS Ventura 13.5.1.
The issue also persists on my laptop monitor and when connected to external monitors (I run one 4K colour-accurate monitor and one standard 1080p monitor).
It would be fantastic to have my application stay in the same place so I could focus on designing, and I haven't found any suggestions for fixes!

Variable Font Custom Weights Not Available
InDesign 19.1. I recently installed a new variable font from Monotype (https://www.myfonts.com/collections/unitext-variable-font-monotype-imaging). When using the slider to adjust the weight variable, the font breaks and defaults to the regular weight.
The same font works fine on Illustrator. Other variable fonts on InDesign (e.g. Acumin Variable) also work fine, so the issue seems to be tied to this specific font and InDesign only.

InDesign V19.1 Updated Jan 18 2024 Bug: Double click on text frame moves the frame every time
With the new version 19.1, every time I double click on a text box to change text, after each double click the text box is moving a tiny bit. This happens every time in any document and after a program restart.

screen flickering sonoma
I know this is a known issue, but after 4 months, I would have hoped that a fix would have been developed by now. My fault for now researching before upgrading to Sonoma, but come on guys. I seriously can't believe how terrible my experience has been with both the new Macs and Adobe software. I have been doing design for 18 years, and have never had as much trouble in that time as I have had from both company's products in the last year. This is ridiculous! It is unfortunate for users that we have no other viable options to move to.

cursor stuck on hand
My system has just updated InDesign to 19.1 (08/01/24) and I now have a grabber hand cursor appearing every time I try and click on anything in my file.
This also happens if I have another tool selected such as text box. The tool icon appears but if I click on a text box the hand comes back. It's rendered doing anything in InDesign files useless. I can't find a setting for it and I have tried resetting preferences but it is still happening. My computer system is running Ventura 13.6.
Does anyone have a work around?

Incorrect reading order for anchored objects
InDesign is placing text and objects in the incorrect reading order when exporting to accessible PDF when an anchored object is anywhere but at the bottom of the page. Instead of placing the anchored object/group of objects in the correct order, it is placing them at the end of the reading order. An example would be an anchored group of a placed Illustrator graph and it's title text box.

Please Support Folder Tags for Mac OS
Finder Tags in Mac OS are used to quickly filter documents and folders in Application dialog boxes, as well as in the finder itself. Folder tags have never worked with InDesign, despite the function being supported by other CC apps. I use folder tags all of the time to organize artwork, as well as documents. Please fix this.

inDesign screen flashing on M2 Mac mini
InDesign screen flashing on M2 Mac mini.
The screen flashed when selecting text, moving objects, using marque select.
Turning off rulers helps a lot. I've read that turning on/off GPU performance will solve this issue. The option is grayed out within inDesign but is available on Illustrator and Photoshop.inDesign version: 19.0.1

Incorrect ligatures in InDesign 2024
In Indesign 19.0.1, ligatures are replaced incorrectly in German. Comparing these with the same document in 18.5.1, where they appear correct, this appears to be a bug in the new version. One screenshot is from INDD 2023 and the other from INDD 2024.
