1. Bug report (regression) — InDesign 2026: Fixed-Layout EPUB export freezes (Error -29) on a large image + a vector shape

   • Adobe InDesign 2026, version 21.0.0.192
   • macOS (Darwin 25.5)
   • Regression: the same document exports correctly in InDesign 2025 and earlier.

   Summary

   Exporting a page to Fixed-Layout EPUB fails with an uncatchable Error -29 "Uncaught exception" when
   the page contains a large placed raster image together with a vector shape from an
   Illustrator-style drawn illustration. The minimal reproducer is just two objects: one large image
   plus any single one of those illustration shapes (even a simple 4-point polygon). Removing the image,
   or removing the vector shape, makes it export. The error aborts the scripting engine (not catchable with
   try/catch); from a panel, the export call never returns.

   Steps to reproduce

   1. Open min_test.indd (one page: a large image + one vector shape). Or build it: place a large image (~5300×7900 px) on a page and add a vector shape that came from a drawn/imported illustration.
   2. Export to Fixed-Layout EPUB (File > Export… → EPUB (Fixed Layout), or doc.exportFile(ExportFormat.FIXED_LAYOUT_EPUB, file, false)).

   Expected result

   The EPUB is produced, as in InDesign 2025 and earlier.

   Actual result

   Export fails with Error Number: -29, "Uncaught exception."

   What was ruled out (controlled, single-variable tests)

   • The image: any large image works (56 MP alone exports fine); the specific file/metadata is irrelevant (pixel data byte-identical, metadata kept or stripped — still fine alone).
   • Cumulative load: 8 images totalling 133 MP, or a big image + up to 400 generated shapes, export fine.
   • Transparency, strokes, compound paths, bezier curves, rich-CMYK fills: a big image + generated shapes carrying any/all of these export fine (9 separate fabrication attempts).
   • Document context / page count / fonts: the page reproduces it alone as a one-page document with the document fonts substituted; other pages and text are not involved.
   • Shape complexity / count: a single simple real shape reproduces it just as a complex one does.

   => The trigger is the large image + a single real vector shape whose internal path representation
   (from an Illustrator-style illustration) cannot be reproduced by scripted/generated geometry. It is
   not size, color, transparency, complexity, count, fonts, or document context.

   Reproducer

   min_test.indd (attached) — a one-page document with a large image + one real vector shape — reproduces
   on export. Package it (File > Package) so the linked image travels.

   Workaround

   Downsample the placed image (changes the image enough to clear the export), or remove/relocate the
   vector illustration from the page.

2. Image placing issue

   Hi,

   Whenever I place two or three images, the software becomes unresponsive and gets stuck. I have to force-close the application and restart it to continue working.

3. InDesign v21.4 crashing every 5 minutes

   Since my update to v21.4 today, InDesign 2026 has been crashing on me every 5 minutes - once was under a minute of opening, while I was reading about a missing font.

4. InDesign crash issue when updating files

   When working on book editing in InDesign, placing Illustrator artwork into InDesign causes InDesign to freeze and fail to save when the Illustrator artwork is updated.

5. [ID-4243320] Incorrect cursor movement in RTL text when Harfbuzz text shaping is used.

   InDesign version: v20 (both Mac & PC)

   In right-to-left languages ​​(Hebrew & Arabic) the cursor movement went crazy:
   - Left key - goes up
   - Right key - jumps to the end of the line...
   We can't work that way

   Note: both (23\25 indd) set to 'Visual' in preferences > right-to-left > cursor movement (of course, changing the setting to 'logical' doesn’t solve it)

6. AI Alt-text generation german InDesign

   Since InDesign 21.2 Alttext can be generated by AI.
   Even if this does not work in a german version, the german interface for defining Alt-text looks destroyed.
   The input window is to large and has no frame on the right side.
   The text description for AI is to lang and cut off.

7. UNDO doesn't work and/with cursor issue

   Several times a day, at random, my cursor suddenly gets stuck on a tool (while remaining usable). Then UNDO stops working. At that point I can save my document and close it, but I'm forced to quit InDesign via Task Manager and restart it for things to work again.

   I updated to version 21.5.1 yesterday, but the problem persists.

8. [ID-4276616][Win]InDesign 21.x does not launch after Windows update due to corrupt VCRuntime

   Indesign and some other products are failing to open, and it all related to the Microsoft C++ Redistributable, we just have to repair it and it starts working again.
   Please work with Microsoft on the issue, something is happening that is making it very very hard to manage and work with InDesign because of the problem. I think it is happening with other Adobe products too

   Impact

   Cumulative update appears to be removing the msvcp140.dll, vcruntime140.dll and vcruntime140_1.dll from the C:\Windows\System32 directory

   Investigations currently by Microsoft

   The investigation is currently ongoing with both the Microsoft VC++ team and the MSI development team. Current findings indicate multiple contributing factors behind the reported VC runtime corruption and installation issues.

   Details requested by Microsoft to be collected by customer

   Capture additional logging via the [Introduction to TroubleShootingScript toolset (TSS) - Windows Client | Microsoft ( https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/windows-tss/introduction-to-troubleshootingscript-toolset-tss), to generate a DND_SetupReport and share it with sharewithID@adobe.com

   • Download and unzip toolset from:  https://aka.ms/getTSS
   • Launch an elevated Powershell prompt
   • Run the following to ensure the script can be executed: Set-ExecutionPolicy -scope Process -ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -Force
   • Capture the installation data by running the tss script as follows: .\TSS.ps1 -Collectlog DND_SetupReport
   • Zip the resulting C:\MS_DATA folder containing the files, and upload to the File Transfer site.

9. Object Export Options / addig Alt Text issues

   1) InDesign 21.5 on MacBook Pro Tahoe 26.6.1

   I'm experiencing various issues when adding Alt Text to images. The longer I work with the Object Export Options dialog, the more likely it becomes that one or more of the following issues will occur:

   A) The Object Export Options dialog is open and an image is selected. The existing Alt Text is highlighted and a new text is entered, but instead of replacing the existing Alt Text, the new text is inserted into a new text frame on the page.

   B) An object is selected and the Object Export Options dialog is open. Alt Text is entered, and then the next object is selected. However, the text displayed in the Alt Text field does not update, even though the newly selected object has different Alt Text assigned or no Alt Text at all. The Object Export Options dialog must be closed and reopened before it reflects the correct Alt Text.

   C) No object is selected and the Object Export Options dialog is opened. A graphic frame is then selected, but the Alt Text options remain greyed out and cannot be edited.

   D) When the Object Export Options dialog is opened with no object selected, all Alt Text-related options sometimes remain greyed out even after selecting different objects.

   Feature Requests:

   I) Generating Alt Text takes a moment, but there is no visual indication that the generation process is in progress. It is unclear whether clicking the button was successful until the generated text eventually appears. Please add a progress indicator or other visual feedback while Alt Text is being generated.

   II) Why is there no keyboard shortcut available for opening the Object Export Options dialog? It would significantly improve accessibility workflows and efficiency when adding Alt Text to large numbers of images.

10. Cursor changes to spinning circle, and undo stops working

    This keeps happening, sometimes it's a new document. Cursor is spinning wheel but still functions, undo doesn't work either!

11. InDesign Relink Search do not find files on SMB share

    We're experiencing an issue when attempting to relink missing assets stored on an SMB network share.

    Environment

    Adobe InDesign (Latest Version)

    Files stored on an SMB network share.

    macOS (Fully up to date)

    The Problem

    When a linked file is missing and we choose Relink in InDesign, searching for the filename returns no results, even though the file exists on the SMB share.

    However:

    Finder can locate the file immediately.

    Spotlight also finds the file without any issues.

    What We Have Tried

    We found a script that can be run from within InDesign. When the script performs a search of the same SMB share, it successfully finds the missing files.

    This suggests that InDesign itself can access the share, but the built-in Relink search is behaving differently from the script.

    Has anyone encountered this behaviour before?

    We're looking for a solution that would allow InDesign's relink process to locate files on an SMB share. Possible solutions could include:

    A preference or macOS setting we've overlooked.

    An enhanced version of the script that could automate the relinking process after locating the files.

    A third-party plug-in or utility that improves the Relink workflow with network shares.

    All suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

12. [ID-4273456] Press the opt/alt key after dragging, it duplicated to the incorrect layer

    InDesign 2026 （and earlier, too）I was found out in CS6.

    Issue:
    When drag and duplicate any object, the duplicate destination will be the previous active layer under certain conditions.

    Reproduction procedure:
    1 Layer panel "Paste Remembers Layers" check off
    2 Unselect, and duplicate the object Activate layers other than the layers of the object
    3 Start dragging and add the option/alt key in the middle of dragging
    4 After dragging, the object is duplicated to the layer that was active in step 2

    Ideal result:
    The uplication by dragging will be duplicated to the same layer as the original regardless of any setting.

    I really hope to correct it.

    理想の結果
    ドラッグによる複製はいかなる設定にも関係なくオリジナルと同一のレイヤーに複製されること

13. (InDesign)Problem with metadata after conversion v15 to v20

    After converting some old .indd files to v20 from v15 I see that custom metadata is completely wrong. I’d assume that during conversion InDesign finds old metadata packets and set incorrect values
    Here is the cimpress:Id value we have before conversion which is correct(pic1)

    But after conversion to v20(v19 works correct) I got something like this(pic2):
    To convert the file you need to simply open BEFORE_CONVERSION.indd in v20 Indesign

    Expected result is cimpress:Id have same value as pic1.png
    Actual result is pic2.png
    Is it possible to fix conversion process somehow, because it breaks a lot of flows and makes migration to the new InDesign versions impossible?

14. macOS system fonts in older documents

    When opening documents in 21.4.1.4 that were created in a version < 21.4 and that use macOS system fonts, those system fonts show as <Font Status="NotAvailable"/> in IDML exported from 21.4., and as FontStatus.NOT_AVAILABLE from the ExtendScript interface. They look installed and normal in Find/Replace Font.... Doing things to try to trigger a refresh, like app.updateFonts(), or typing inside a range of text in the document that uses the font, does not fix it; round-tripping IDML does.

    This affects some of our automated workflows.

    I'm not sure if this happens with every macOS system font, but I have seen it with more than one. The attached document, saved in 21.3, uses Avenir.

    I would suspect that this problem was introduced by the fix for [ID-4272938] After installing a Windows 11 update, InDesign is unable to find the Times New Roman and Calibri fonts

15. spinning wheel effing up programme v21.3

    This just started randomly happening in the middle of a working day and now won't go away.

    The spinning wheel appears when working on a file (normally placing images). I can close the job, but I cannot save (unless I "save as" again), cannot undo anything, and other menu items are greyed out as well. The programme won't close, and I have to force quit. Making it impossible to get through a job.

    No background tasks are appearing.

    I have had two remote sessions with Adobe agents, and both times they did something different that was supposed to "fix" the problem. Still having the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1st fix (completely uninstalled everything Adobe related on my computer and reinstalled everything. All preferences and saved settings removed. DIDN'T WORK

    2nd fix - updating graphics card that was out of date. Worked for the rest of the day and then started the following day again.

    This just started randomly happening in the middle of a working day and now won't go away.

    The spinning wheel appears when working on a file (normally placing images). I can close the job, but I cannot save (unless I "save as" again), cannot undo anything, and other menu items are greyed out as well. The programme won't close, and I have to force quit. Making it impossible to get through a job.

    No background tasks are appearing.

16. bugs with version 21.4

    Since version 21.4, there have been a lot of bugs and slowdowns while working.
    The process freezes very quickly, and I am forced to force-quit the application to close the software.

17. Table of Contents Generation Silently Excludes Content Despite Correct Styling

    Summary
    Layout > Table of Contents fails to generate entries for a specific chapter document ("1Part 1FTCIT 3RD ED.indd") within a book project, even though the target paragraph style is confirmed correctly applied, the TOC style's Include list is confirmed correct, and the issue persists after rebuilding the TOC style from scratch, rebuilding the document via IDML export/re-import, and testing with brand-new, untethered content. A control test in a brand-new, unrelated document with a brand-new paragraph style and TOC style generated correctly on the first attempt, ruling out the application installation/preferences as the cause.

    OS: macOS Tahoe 26.5.2
    Project type: InDesign Book (.indb) with 9 linked chapter documents, synchronized paragraph/character styles

    Expected Behavior
    Running Layout > Table of Contents with a paragraph style included in the TOC style's "Include Paragraph Styles" list should generate a TOC entry for every paragraph using that style — whether scanning a single document or, with "Include Book Documents" enabled, across every chapter in the book.

    Actual Behavior
    When generating from the book's Front Matter/Preface document with "Include Book Documents" enabled, only two of nine chapters (Part 7 and Back Matter) produce entries. The other seven, including Part 1, are silently omitted — no error, no warning, just missing entries. This was traced down to Part 1 failing to generate any TOC entries even in complete isolation from the rest of the book.
    Isolation Steps Taken (in order) and Results
    Confirmed paragraph styles are synchronized and named identically across all chapter documents via the Book panel's synced-style indicator and manual inspection. (No issue found.)
    Saved all chapters via "Save Book" to rule out stale/unsaved content being read by TOC generation. (No change.)
    Checked Book panel status icons for broken links or "needs saving" flags on all chapters. (All normal.)
    Searched for duplicate/similarly-named paragraph styles (e.g., a style nested in a group vs. a flat style of the same visible name) using Find/Change with Format-based search, scope "All Documents." Confirmed the target style ("Chapter Titles") is found correctly in every chapter, including Part 1. (No duplicate found.)
    Checked layer visibility, conditional text, and master-page overrides on Part 1's chapter title frame. Layer visible, conditional text set to [Unconditional], frame is a local page item (not an un-overridden master item). (No issue found.)
    Checked Book panel > Synchronize Options to confirm "TOC Style" was included in the sync categories, then re-ran Synchronize Book. (No change.)
    Rebuilt the TOC style's Include Paragraph Styles list by removing and re-adding the target style fresh from the document's own current style catalog. (No change.)
    Isolated Part 1 completely from the book: generated a TOC from within Part 1 alone, with "Include Book Documents" unchecked, so the scan could only read Part 1's own content. Result: empty — not even Part 1's own chapter title appeared, despite the paragraph being confirmed (via clicking into it with the Type tool) to carry the correct paragraph style, and despite Include Book Documents being off (so no other document could be responsible).
    Tested a brand-new, untethered text frame inside the same document, with freshly typed text and a freshly applied instance of the same paragraph style. (Still empty — rules out frame/thread-level corruption of the original title frame, a known InDesign issue with a similar symptom.)
    Rebuilt the entire chapter document via File > Export > IDML, then reopened and re-saved as .indd. Re-ran the isolated test. (Still empty — rules out low-level document corruption that an IDML round-trip would normally clear.)
    Built an entirely new, independent TOC style from scratch ("New," not "Edit"), including only the target paragraph style. (Still empty — rules out corruption in the original TOC style object itself.)
    Confirmed via Select All (Cmd+A) inside the empty TOC result frame that no invisible/mis-styled text was being generated — the frame is genuinely empty, not a display/formatting issue. (Confirmed empty.)
    Control test: created a brand-new, completely unrelated document with a new paragraph style and new TOC style, no connection to the book project. Result: generated correctly on the first attempt. (This rules out the InDesign installation and preferences as the cause — the bug is confined to this specific project/document.)
    Notes
    Because a from-scratch document reproduces correctly, this does not appear to be a universal, easily-reproducible bug — it appears to be tied to some state specific to this document or book file that we were unable to identify or clear through normal means (resaving, resyncing, style rebuilding, or IDML export/re-import).

18. InDesign deletes alt text when updating images - STOP IT

    Please stop removing alt text every time an image is updated. I worked for hours on that alt text and it has been completely deleted. More work for me now.

19. AI content labelling

    Hi, I just opened indesign to see my own work labelled as AI generated. I haven't used any AI tools to produce any of my data, yet it appears as such in many instances. Are these metadata stores upon export too? How is Adobe going to address this? This basically robs me of my copyrights. Would appreciate if this was only toggle on/off feature, and not the default.

20. Alt+drag duplicates only one object

    When two or more placed/linked files are selected and duplicated using Alt+drag, only one of the objects is duplicated.
