1. [ID-4270896] Workspace resets every time I open (InDesign 2026)

   On the new InDesign (v21.0) all of my workspaces have been reset and aren't saving properly every time I open a new document. I even set up my docked tabs and tab groups and saved them to a NEW workspace within a fresh 2026 file, and it reset to a default state next time it's opened. It seems to ignore all of the tools I've chosen to remove from their tab groups and opens with all of the default tools within those tab groups.

   The screenshot with all of the icons is what all of my workspaces revert to upon opening InDesign 2026, while the other screenshot is what I've saved my workspace to include.

   On the new InDesign (v21.0) all of my workspaces have been reset and aren't saving properly every time I open a new document.    InDesign 2026 (macOS): every open CEP panel costs ~20–25% CPU continuously — the host redraws the panel at display refresh rate even when the panel is completely static

   Summary

   With any CEP (HTML) extension panel open, the InDesign process burns roughly
   20–25% CPU permanently on a 120 Hz display, with no user interaction and no
   activity in the panel. Each additional open panel adds the same again (three
   panels ≈ 75%). Closing the panel, or collapsing it to a dock icon, returns
   InDesign to its ~5% idle baseline immediately.

   Call-stack sampling shows InDesign's main thread spending ~67% of its time in
   -[MTKView draw] → PlugPlugOwl.framework, which on EVERY display-link tick
   allocates a new MTLTexture, runs a CPU pixel-conversion pass over the whole
   panel bitmap, and uploads the full bitmap with
   -[MTLTexture replaceRegion:mipmapLevel:withBytes:bytesPerRow:] — even though
   the panel's renderer (CEPHtmlEngine) is idle and has produced no new frame.
   The MTKView appears to be in continuous-draw mode at the display's native
   refresh rate rather than paused-and-drawn-on-demand.

   Illustrator 2026 on the same machine, with the same PlugPlugOwl 12.1.0.5
   build, does NOT show this: opening a CEP panel there adds no CPU at all. So
   the issue is in InDesign's hosting of the CEP view, not in CEP/CEF itself.

   Environment

   • Adobe InDesign 2026, version 21.5.1.73 (build 21510)
   • macOS 26.6.2 (25G83), Apple M1 (8-core), 16 GB
   • Display: DELL U2725QE, 3840×2160 at 120 Hz, UI scaled to 1920×1080 (2×)
   • CEP 12.1.0 (CSXS 12); PlugPlugOwl.framework 12.1.0.5 inside the InDesign app bundle; CEPHtmlEngine Chrome/99.0.4844.84
   • CEP PlayerDebugMode = 1 (unsigned development panels), but the panels used are ordinary HTML panels with no special CEF command-line flags
   • For comparison: Adobe Illustrator 2026 (30.8.0) — same machine, same PlugPlugOwl build — is unaffected
   • Persists after a full restart of InDesign: [ ] yes / [ ] no ← fill in

   Steps to reproduce

   1. Launch InDesign, let it settle, watch the InDesign process in Activity Monitor: ~5% CPU at idle.
   2. Open any CEP HTML panel. (Reproduced with three different in-house panels; the one used for the measurements below is a fully static page — no timers, no requestAnimationFrame, no CSS animations, no polling.)
   3. Do nothing. InDesign's CPU rises by ~20–25% and stays there for as long as the panel is open.
   4. Open a second and third panel: each adds ~20–25% more (≈75% with three).
   5. Close a panel: CPU drops by the same amount immediately. Collapse a panel to a dock icon: same — cost goes to zero.

   Expected

   An idle panel should cost ~0%. The host should redraw the panel's view only
   when CEF delivers a new frame.

   Actual

   The host redraws — and re-uploads the full panel bitmap to a NEW Metal
   texture — on every vblank, regardless of whether the panel content changed.

   Evidence

   1. It is the InDesign process, not the panel's renderer. With one static
   panel open (Activity Monitor): InDesign 50–58% (with sample running
   concurrently; ~30% without), the panel's CEPHtmlEngine process 0.8%. A Chrome
   DevTools Protocol CPU profile of the panel page over the same period was
   99.7% idle, and document.getAnimations() returned an empty list — the page
   produced no new frames.

   2. Call-stack sample (attached: indesign-sample-one-panel-open.txt,
   sample <pid> 5 at 1 ms). Of 3465 main-thread samples, 2310 (67%) are:

   -[NSApplication run] … __CFRunLoopRun → _dispatch_main_queue_drain
     → __23-[MTKView __initCommon]_block_invoke (MetalKit)
       → -[MTKView draw]
         → PlugPlugOwl +0xf0ea8 → +0xf03ec → +0xf07ec           (2302 samples)
             ├─ PlugPlugOwl +0xf0da4 → +0xf5b20/+0xf5b64/…   (1216 samples — a per-pixel CPU loop over the panel bitmap)

   The CEP CVDisplayLink thread in the same sample shows MetalKit's
   DisplayLinkCallback → dispatch_source_merge_data → _dispatch_runloop_queue_poke
   on every vblank — i.e. the MTKView is running with isPaused = NO /
   enableSetNeedsDisplay = NO at the display's refresh rate.

   For comparison, indesign-sample-panels-closed.txt is the same sample with
   all panels closed: the main thread is ~96% blocked in mach_msg and there
   are no PlugPlugOwl frames at all.

   3. The cost tracks the display refresh rate. Switching the display from
   120 Hz to 60 Hz (nothing else changed) roughly halved InDesign's CPU with the
   panel open (one measurement: 58% → 24%).

   4. The cost tracks the panel's pixel area. Resizing the panel larger /
   smaller moves InDesign's CPU up / down accordingly.

   5. A collapsed (icon-docked) panel costs nothing — consistent with the
   per-frame work being proportional to the view's size.

   6. Illustrator is unaffected. Same machine, same session, Illustrator
   2026 with a CEP panel open stays at ~2% CPU.

   Impact

   Every CEP extension — third-party and Adobe's own — costs a sustained ~20–25%
   of a CPU core per open panel on any 120 Hz display, which includes every
   MacBook Pro since 2021 (ProMotion). Users who keep two or three panels open
   have InDesign sitting at 50–75% CPU all day: lag, fans, battery drain, and the
   effect compounds with other work. Users are unlikely to attribute it to the
   panels since the panels themselves look idle and their renderer processes
   show ~0%.

   Related reports

   • InDesign 2022 17.3 – HIGH CPU when idle
     (community forum, Jul 2022 – Jan 2024, unresolved). Very likely this same
     bug seen from the outside: 30–40% idle CPU in the InDesign process itself
     (the reporter ruled out CEPHtmlEngine when staff pointed at it) on a 16"
     M1 Max MacBook Pro — a 120 Hz ProMotion display — persisting from 17.0
     through the 2024 release. The default workspace includes the CC Libraries
     panel, which is a CEP panel, so a user needs no third-party extension to
     hit it. Quick check for that thread's reporters: collapse the Libraries
     panel to an icon and watch the CPU drop.

   • High GPU load on macOS 26 Tahoe
     (Illustrator UserVoice, also reported for InDesign; status "Started",
     3 Aug 2026: "platform-level compositing issue … flagged with Apple",
     workaround in Illustrator beta 30.8.0.72). Adjacent but NOT the same
     issue — that one is WindowServer GPU with the app's CPU low, whereas this
     is CPU inside the InDesign process in its own MTKView draw. Please don't
     merge them; note that Illustrator 30.8.0, which carries that workaround,
     is the app that does NOT show this problem.

   Suggested fix

   In the InDesign side of the CEP view hosting (PlugPlugOwl's MTKView usage):

   • Run the MTKView paused (isPaused = YES, enableSetNeedsDisplay = YES) and call setNeedsDisplay only when CEF delivers a new frame (OnPaint), the way Illustrator's hosting evidently already behaves.
   • Reuse one MTLTexture per view rather than allocating and freeing one per frame, and skip the CPU conversion + upload when the frame is unchanged.

   Workarounds for affected users

   • Set the display refresh rate to 60 Hz (halves the cost).
   • Collapse panels to dock icons when not in use (cost goes to zero).
   • Keep panels closed rather than open-but-idle.

   Attachments

3. Puntero de mouse queda trabado con icono de reloj y permite trabajar a medias

   Apenas se abre el programa y selecciono una herramienta, el puntero queda trabado con ese icono, permite seleccionar menues pero no puedo hacer nada mas y es mucho peor cuando inserto una imagen, se crashea todo y es imposible tener un flujo de trabajo, no se soluciona incluso al reiniciar el programa. La unica forma de salir es a través de el finalizardor de tareas.
   No puedo deshacer ninguna accion y los menues que se abren estas en blanco.

4. Pointer disappears / shows unrelated shape after ~10–15 min of use — requires force quit

   macOS Tahoe 26.6.2
   Mac Studio, Apple M1 Max

   Description:
   After roughly 10–15 minutes of normal use, the pointer stops behaving correctly. No specific action seems to trigger it — it just starts happening during regular work. The pointer either disappears completely or displays a random shape unrelated to the current tool or action. Once this occurs, InDesign becomes unresponsive and the only way to recover is to force quit and relaunch the app.

   Steps to reproduce:

   Open InDesign and work as usual.
   Continue working for approximately 10–15 minutes (no specific trigger identified).
   Observe the pointer.

   Expected behavior: Pointer reflects the active tool/action as normal.

   Actual behavior: Pointer disappears or shows a random, unrelated shape. InDesign then stops responding and must be force quit.

5. Duplicated layers when placing Illustrator files

   When an Illustrator file is placed in InDesign, the tab with Layer options shows multiple versions of the same layers. The number of layers is multiplied by the number of artboards.

   I see this issue with newly created Illustrator files. The older .ai files are placed correctly.

   Our preliminary analysis indicates that this issue may be an isolated scenario. We have identified a workaround that can help resolve the issue.

   Please rename the following folders:

   – Rename the CEP folder to CEP.old from:

   • macOS: /Library/Application Support/Adobe

   • Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe

   If that doesn't help, rename the UXP folder to UXP.old from:

   • macOS: /Library/Application Support/Adobe and ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe

   • Windows: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe and C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe

   Once done, relaunch InDesign and check again.

   I am so incredibly frustrated and angry with Adobe right now that I simply have to speak up!

   I have been working with Adobe InDesign professionally for many years. But what has been happening with this software over the past two years is becoming absolutely unacceptable.

   With every new version, things seem to get worse, especially when it comes to PDF export.

   InDesign keeps crashing, and the worst part is that there is not even an error message! The program simply closes. No warning, no explanation, no indication of what went wrong.

   And this does not happen just once. It happens over and over and over again!

   I have a newspaper printing deadline tomorrow morning!

   I am under enormous pressure to finish the pages and deliver the print-ready PDF files on time. Instead, I am sitting here fighting with software that I can no longer rely on.

   To be perfectly honest, I am absolutely sick and tired of this!

   Adobe, before you keep introducing new AI features, effects, and whatever else you are working on, perhaps you should first make sure that your existing software actually works properly!

   What is the point of adding new features when I cannot even export a PDF file without the program crashing?

   I do not need more AI effects. I do not need more unnecessary features.

   I NEED STABLE, RELIABLE, PROFESSIONAL SOFTWARE THAT ACTUALLY WORKS!

   I pay for professional software, and I expect professional quality in return.

   I have been an Adobe customer for many years. InDesign used to be software I could depend on. But over the past two years, I have increasingly felt that something is going seriously wrong.

   The problems started gradually, but today has been an absolute nightmare.

   Constant crashes. No error messages. No explanation. The application simply disappears!

   Do you have any idea what this means for professionals who work under strict deadlines every single day?

   Do you understand how much time, energy, productivity, and peace of mind these problems cost us?

   I am not a casual user. I work professionally with InDesign, and my job depends on having reliable software.

   In newspaper production, printing deadlines are not optional. They are absolute deadlines that must be met!

   And when your software repeatedly crashes during something as fundamental as exporting a PDF, it puts our entire production process at risk.

   MY MESSAGE TO ADOBE IS SIMPLE:

   Stop focusing so much on constantly adding new features and start taking care of the basics!

   STABILITY, RELIABILITY, AND A FUNCTIONING PDF EXPORT MUST BE YOUR TOP PRIORITIES!

   I am not asking for miracles. I am simply asking for professional software that can reliably perform its most basic functions.

   After all these years as a loyal Adobe customer, I am now deeply disappointed, extremely frustrated, and genuinely angry.

   ADOBE, PLEASE GET YOUR SOFTWARE UNDER CONTROL!

8. InDesign Crash/Loading issues

   I've used InDesign for 13 years, and this has to be the worst version! The program will randomly crash. It doesn't load correctly at least 80% of the time. When the program is first launched, it loads the first screen, then it moves to a small box in the top-left corner. I try to maximize the program, and it minimizes to the taskbar. I have to open it again and manually resize it just to open the program. Then, if I don't wait long enough, the cursor gets stuck in the load cycle, and I can't use the program! It also does this in the middle of working! It's so frustrating that the program used to be better and now, thanks to DEI, we have ****! I've used this program for so many years for work, very successfully, but now, now it doesn't work at least 40% of the time, the program will freeze almost every time I use it. I've done everything on my end to ensure that it isn't my PC that is affecting the program. I've had computer techs look at things on my PC and have had no luck. It's the InDesign program that is causing all kinds of problems. The AI that is integrated now is also an issue. It's slowing everything down. There should be an option to deactivate the AI function! Just make a program that works, as it used to!

9. InDesign window opening between two monitors

   In InDesign 2026 (v 21.51), I'm having troubles opening files by right-clicking on them in my Microsoft File Explorer. I'll have InDesign running, but with the program window collapsed. Then when I try to right click an INDD file and select to open it with InDesign 2026, the program window pops up and opens the file, but the window is split between my two external monitors and the aspect ration is off. Then I end up having to shut InDesign down entirely to get it to revert back. This only happens so far when the program window is collapsed to my taskbar - but it's been happening for several months to no avail with prior updates.

10. Incorrect PDF Tagging for Tables Split Across Pages with Repeated Header Rows

    When exporting a tagged PDF from InDesign, tables that span multiple pages and use repeated header rows are tagged incorrectly.

    Instead of generating a single table structure, the exported PDF creates repeated <THead> and <TBody> elements within the same table:

    <Table>
    ├─ <THead>
    ├─ <TBody>
    ├─ <THead>
    └─ <TBody>

    This results in an invalid or semantically incorrect table structure for PDF accessibility.

    Expected Behavior:

    Option 1 (structurally correct, though not ideal semantically):
    Each table continuation on a new page should be exported as a separate table:

    <Table>
    ├─ <THead>
    └─ <TBody>
     
    <Table>
    ├─ <THead>
    └─ <TBody>

    Option 2 (preferred, semantically and structurally correct):
    The entire table should be exported as a single tagged table:

    <Table>
    ├─ <THead>

    In this case, the automatically repeated visual table header on subsequent pages should be marked as an Artifact and not be included as a second <THead> element in the tag structure.

    Impact:
    The current tagging can lead to accessibility issues, incorrect table semantics, and potential PDF/UA compliance problems for assistive technologies.

    When exporting a tagged PDF from InDesign, tables that span multiple pages and use repeated header rows are tagged incorrectly.

11. InDesign 21.1 x64 on PC: panels not expanding when clicking on the icon

    Panels sometimes do not expand when clicking on an icon in the right-hand column of panels. It seems random. Sometimes the panel you choose expands when you click on the icon (as it should), but sometimes you have to click the two little chevrons pointing leftward at the top of the column of icons, which makes them all expand and it's a mess to work with. Only the one you click on should expand, but sometimes it doesn't.

    This isn't a new bug. There were previous submissions about this and the issue was supposedly resolved, but it is NOT. The comments are closed, so I couldn't comment on there that the issue is not resolved. This has been happening ever since the first upgrade at the beginning of the year. I'm on the latest update and still having this issue.

12. Tiny bug within the German UI: GREP style sub menu is missing "aus"

    Please add the German word " aus" (more correct: a space and the word aus) after "Mehrere Zeilen" in the GREP style sub menu within the German InDesign.

    This " aus" (= "off") is missing since at least v2016!

    Screenshot 1 shows the english version, srceenshot 2 how it should look like in German(of course not in red color).

13. Linked Illustrator Files Not Displaying Correctly in InDesign

    We are experiencing an issue where Illustrator (.ai) files with linked assets are not displayed correctly when placed in InDesign.

    InDesign does not properly render or recognize the linked content inside the Illustrator file, which affects preview and output accuracy. Currently, the only workaround is to embed all links in Illustrator before placing the file, which increases file size and slows down the workflow.

    Please advise if there is a fix or recommended workflow for handling linked assets between Illustrator and InDesign.

14. Publish Online documents freeze on mobile when menu items tapped

    When accessing my Publish Online documents on my iPhone, my documents navigate normally... until a user taps on either the language or three-dot menus. Tapping on these menus on my iPhone does not result in the fade-to-black pop-up menus that appear when viewed on desktop; instead, the button color indicates an active state but the menu does not appear, and the document freezes. The user must re-load the page in order to navigate the document again.

    The page navigation buttons on the Publish Online menu bar work as intended without issue.

    The documents work normally otherwise. Here's a link to one document having the issue:

    This is on iOS 26.6.2, with both the Safari and Brave browsers. It's happening with the document linked above as well as a current document I'm working on. I'm Publishing Online via InDesign 21.6.

    Edit (11/2/2026): in testing, it seems like object animations are causing this issue... if I strip objects of their animations, the Adobe Publish menu items function normally.

15. Annoying tooltips in PDF comments panel

    This tooltip is completely useless and usually appears right on the top of the comment's text, so the user can't even decide that applying it will be a good thing or not (see screenshot).
    Please get rid of this absolute nonsense, or at least provide an option to disable it!

    3. Shadow should not change distance from object (except as a result of changing distance property in drop shadow menu)

17. Epub Export Via InDesign Images are Left Instead of Center Aligned

    Since installing 21.4.1 a week ago, reproducible Indesign export to reflowable ePub:
    all images align LEFT despite export settings align center and object export custom align center.
    I rolled back to 21.4, same result.
    Rolled back to 21.3, issue resolved.
    It's a bug.

18. Color Picker eyedropper freezes UI — invisible modal dialog blocks all interaction and saving

    1. Version:
       Adobe InDesign 21.4.1 / 2026 — macOS Tahoe 26.5.1, Apple Silicon M1 Max

    2. Steps to reproduce:
       Select an object with a fill color.
       Double-click the Fill color swatch in the Tools panel to open the Color Picker dialog.
       Try to sample a color from the document using the eyedropper inside the Color Picker.
       Nothing happens (the eyedropper does not pick up any color).
       Close the Color Picker dialog.

    3. Expected result:
       The eyedropper samples the color under the cursor and applies it. After closing the dialog, the UI is fully responsive again.

    4. Actual result:
       After closing the Color Picker, InDesign becomes unresponsive to all commands. Some UI elements are clickable but no action executes — menu items are greyed out or only trigger a warning beep. Menu commands (Save, Window > Arrange, etc.) do not respond. Attempting to quit triggers the warning "Die Anforderung kann nicht bearbeitet werden, da ein modales Dialogfeld oder eine modale Warnmeldung aktiv ist." ("The request cannot be processed because a modal dialog or modal alert is active."), but no such dialog is visible anywhere on screen or on any connected display. It appears an invisible modal dialog remains active and locks the whole application, blocking even saving.

    Workaround found: The document tabs remain clickable — clicking the tab's close (×) triggers the normal "save changes?" prompt, which allows saving the file before force-quitting. Without this, all unsaved progress would be lost.

20. [ID-4265002][ExtendScript] Folder.execute() no longer works in Indesign 20.4

    Folder.execute() no longer reveals the folder and activate the Finder. It does nothing. Tested on Indesign 20.4 on MacOS 15.5.

    Steps to reproduce:

    Expected result: activating the Finder, revealing the Desktop folder.
