Add a counter symbol similar to the "current page number" marker.
It would be very useful to be able to insert a special character (similar to the "current page number" marker) that makes a digit counter, starting with 1 and then iterating upwards for each time it's inserted.
I know there's a workaround to sort of do this with numbered lists, but that's very limited, especially if you want the counter anywhere except the beginning of a paragraph.
I'm currently working a book that has many images with captions, that ends with the number of the image, like this: "Lorem ipsum dolor… [15]". If "15" where a simple character that counted upwards…

Allow Author to mark comment as complete without removing the reference.
Currently, if I (the author) mark something as "resolved", it removes the comment and prevents the person who created the comment from being able to easily see what they have done and how it was resolved.
it would be nice for people invited to review to see what past comments they have made (maybe grey out a comment that is marked "Resolved" so that they can go back to that page and see. Then, if it is not done to satisfaction, they could un-resolve it.

Color-code paragraph styles
I'm working on a huge training book with dozens of styles. I've stashed them in style groups, but it is still a chore, even inside a group, to scroll, scroll, scroll to try to find the style I need -- and it is also a chore to switch among the style groups themselves -- as many of the styles are used on every page due to the nature of the material. It would be SO VERY HELPFUL if one could color-code paragraph styles (a la the Layers palette) so that when there are this many styles, the ones a person…

Show cross-reference destination document in the cross-ref panel
I work with a lot of guides and need to use a lot of cross-references in my files. When these files later get used as a base for new files and saved under different names, or content is copy-pasted from one file to another, the cross-references point to the old (wrong) destination. I know you can select a cross-ref and change its destination document from the palette menu, but first you need to know that there is such wrong reference, but it is difficult when the cross-reference colour indicator is green and you think everything is fine. I would…

A shortcut / button that automatically expands your selected shape to fill the page
I find myself drawing many rectangles a day to create backgrounds for a document. It's obviously no problem at all, but seems the process could be sped up if I could just use a shortcut that automatically resizes a selected shape to fill the page, and it would also remove the potential for error if you haven't quite lined up the rectange correctly. Maybe there's already a solution for this?

Allowing the Data Merge feature to tile pages for final Print or PDF.
Allowing the Data Merge feature to tile documents for Print or PDF. I would love to take my 8.5 x 11" , file with one image and some copy being pulled from a data source to be able to print or PDF right from the data merge dialog box and specify to place 4 or more up on a page.

Auto Layout of text frames (ala Figma auto layout)
Currently InDesigns' text frame fitting options are really powerful... but it would be amazing to pinch some of Figma's functionality, to supercharge them for dynamic layouts.
For instance, we often like to set up text variables on a master page, and have a layout which dynamically adjusts. Currently, we can use workarounds like whitespace to set spacing between elements, so that as the content shrinks & expands nothing overflows, and the spacing between these elements remains consistent. It's a limited approach, but better than nothing. You could take this further by having items dynamically align to layout grids…

Allow designers to "group pages" for to provide easier re-organization
Similar to grouping layers in photoshop and illustrator or styles in INDD, you should provide the folder option inside the pages panel to "group pages" to make sections easier to reorder.

Window decorators make moving the window difficult when smaller
When the window is small (eg half of my screen), the window decorators make it very difficult to move the window. In particular, the name of the program ("Adobe InDesign CC 2018") is inactive, but somehow I still can't grab the window there. It gets very frustrating to manage my screen, especially when I need several programs open.

Option to ignore the non breaking space and thin space of the font
Many fonts created by English-speaking designers are poorly adapted to French typesetting in terms of the width of the non-breaking space and/or the thin space. It should be possible to ignore these spaces and use InDesign's default spaces.

Folders in Pages Panel
Folders in Pages Panel would be most excellent!! So multiple chapters/sections of long documents can be combined and closed up for quicker navigation.

Please let apps remember dialog box size & position
Please make CC-apps aware of user display setups and changes, single or multiple screen resolutions. Hunting for them acress multiple screens, repositioning and resizing them each time is needlessly cumbersome and time consuming!
Default:
– in case of multiple screen setup: main screen (as specified in OS display preferences), centered.
– in case of single screen: centeredUser settings
– record and store user changes to dialog box sizes and positions with current screen setup. Store setups in prefs file.
– make CC app recognize changes in multiple screen real-estate and store and recall users dialog box positions…

Improve handling of long footnotes
Handling of long footnotes could be improved in at least three ways:
- Sometimes a footnote absolutely cannot start on the same page as its reference either because the given footnote follows so closely behind a very long footnote (or a dense cluster of shorter footnotes). Presently, InDesign simply stops setting text at that point, as it would when a hits a word it cannot fit into any subsequent frame in the story. Ideally such footnotes would be not only be permitted but be custom-labelable—e.g. “(from p. 17)”—but for now simply permitting such footnotes, elegantly or not, would be a far…

Pages panel for book wiev
I want the pages panel to display the whole book. Sometimes it is very useful to see the transitions between chapters before exporting to PDF. Double click a page and it opens the file.

Copy Artboard Size across CC apps
I do this a lot: I have a diecut in Illustrator and need to create the layout in InDesign. I have a little OCD (like most DTP/Artworkers :)) ) so I create the diecut in Illustrator and then fit the artboard size to the whole art. When I start creating the layout in InDesign, I create the document using the same page size as the Illustrator file. And I do this several times a day. :)
It would be great to have an option/button in Artboard Tool (Illustrator) / Page Tool (InDesign) to copy the size and be able to…

Cross-Reference feature
I'm an avid user of InDesign; currently working on a book-length document of about 150 pages. I often want to cross-reference something said earlier; however it is buried somewhere in the hundreds of paragraphs of the article story format. That means it's very hard to find that paragraph so that I can simply refer to the page number it's on (see attached file of image capture).
Here's my suggestion: Add a field in the cross-reference dialog box where you can copy in a few leading words of the paragraph you want to find, then have the paragraph text field…

InDesign's own favourite 'edit original' software
With the feature "edit original" in the context menu of images, InDesign opens the image in the OS-default software.
I Think it would be handy to choose a different default edit-software for InDesign only.
If i want to use this feature (especially with shortcuts) I have to set the default software for all images to photoshop (system-wide!). But I do not want to use Photoshop everytime as a default for every image, it's only necessary in InDesign.
It would be great if I could set a default editing software in the settings of InDesign, in wich I can set the…

Indesign 2024 not working with window-snapping apps
I recently upgraded to InDesign 2024. I use BetterSnapTool to arrange my app-windows in order to have a efficient and practical workflow. But InDesign 2024 does not work with BetterSnapTool (BST) or any other window-snapping apps due to this reason I received from the BST support:
"Unfortunately all window manager apps on macOS are affected by this, Adobe has broken their window resizing behavior in their recent updates. Their products do not respond correctly to window resizing requests using the macOS Accessibility API anymore. As of now I don't think there is anything I can do to fix this. If…6 votes -
Anchored illustrations
The layout of anchored Illustrations can NOT be moved around freely on the page it is anchored on. If you try to move the graphic around on the page or next page, the text is obscured or destroyed - the text is under the graphic. If you use the "inline" function the result is the same. The ability to move the "anchored" graphic anyway on the current page, page before it or the next page without the text being effected in any way. The TEXT should re-position itself around the image wherever move it.
