   InDesign Cannot Set Actual Text

   InDesign has no way of setting actual text. This can only be done in PDF. Actual text is set when acronyms are used. Access technologies such as screen readers cannot properly read acronyms such as USA. They voice them as words, like "Youusah." Actual text has to be set for the document to be read correctly. This is a painstaking process that requires InDesign users to learn PDF Remediation, a highly specialized skillset that is typically outside the role of the average Graphic Designer. Currently, the process for setting actual text in Acrobat is as follows: Find the acronym in the Tags tree. Open the Accessibility tool and choose Reading Order. Drag a marquee over the acronym and tag it as what it is – paragraph/text or a heading level. The Tags tree will collapse. Open the Tags tree again to find the new acronym Tag. Right click on the new acronym Tag and choose “Properties”. Type the acronym with spaces between each letter in the Actual Text field, for example “U S A.” Spaces will cause the acronym to be read correctly. This issue affects EVERY SINGLE InDesign user who is required to make accessible content. Please make setting actual text an option within InDesign so painstaking remediation is not required.

2. Group/Organize Parent Pages

   It would be very helpful for larger documents if I had the ability to group/organize the parent pages in their panel. I am currently working on an urban planning document where each section of the master plan (parks, housing, wastewater, etc...) has a different colored footer and chapter page, so I have 8 different footer parent pages and 8 different chapter pages, on top of the 10 or so general layout parent pages I create for our urban planners to use as templates. Consequently, navigating the parents panel requires a LOT of scrolling. If I could just group all my footer parents in a folder and all my chapter parents in a folder, I could cut down the real estate they occupy in my panel.

   I don't pretend to understand software development, but I suspect this would be a pretty straightforward feature to implement, right?

4. Toggle "Preview" ON by default

   I'd like to see the effect of what I'm doing e.g. in the Paragraph panel by default. Can't find this in the application or on Google. This could easily be an option in the Preferences.

5. Clearer comment navigation in share for review

   click on a comment and have the comments panel scroll to the comment clicked, make the active comment highlight more visible and don't unmap comments when the text is deleted but delete the comments with the text.

6. Placed Vector image line weight override

   I work primarily with line art vector files created for instruction sheets. We create the views using a 3D modeling program, save them as PDFs, and then edit them in Illustrator. The images are then placed in InDesign and scaled to fit the page along with the other content. The problem is that the scaled line art stroke weight will scale larger or smaller as it is changed.

   I'm requesting a simple option or override the line weights of the vector files to match... a style? Or even allow them to be edited via the stroke panel? Right-click on the image and select "Override placed stroke..." which opens a dialog box that allows the user to set that specific images line weight? ANYTHING would be better than manually adjusting each image's line weight so that they appear to be similar on the same page in InDesign. I feel like this one change would make so many people's workflow infinitely better. Thank You.

7. Overhaul Bullets and Numbering and add features to make it useful.

   Right now the bullets and numbering features are so limited and feel like an afterthought. Here is what I need in order of importance:

   1. The ability to format bullets/numbers so they ignore extra line spaces.

   2. The ability to align the bullets to the center. When one bullet's verbiage is longer than one line of text the bullet stays on the first line, what I need is for the bullet to be centered with all of the lines of text in that bullet, so if you had a bullet that was three lines long, the bullet would be centered to the middle; or if two lines long, the bullet would be centered in between the two lines.

   3. Give Bullets and Numbering its own window panel. Otherwise I have to hunt it down, google it, etc. Opening paragraph window and then clicking the hamburger icon is not intuitive.

   4. More customization of the bullet symbol. Allow me to easily customize color, size, and spacing from the bullets and numbering panel. Also include more stock shapes and options to choose from that aren't just derived from a font. Allow me to import my own custom shape to use a bullet.

8. Color/swatches Library

   In PS and AI, there're a lot of built-in color/gradient libraries, and when you want to select a color, you ca just append them or open a color library, but in indesign, there're no ways you can do so, a lot of the color selecting work is done by guessing unless you know which color you want to choose

   I hope there will be a built-in color library (if the interactive buttons can have a built-in library and why don't we add a sample color library?

   I know the "Official" way to do this is using Adove Color Theme Panel, but lets face it, this panel is takes so long to load the UI, and everytime you switch between different pane, it takes a long time to load the UI as well. not a good idea when you just want to choose color on the fly

9. Bullet lists: add option for custom spacing of first and last entries

   In a paragraph style defined as a bullet list, you often need to have more space BEFORE THE FIRST item or AFTER THE LAST item. This is possible in CSS and would just need a couple of extra fields added to the "Bullets and Numbering" section in the "Paragraph Style" panel.

   The only option now is to create additional styles or to use overrides.

   Use the Indents and Spacing section of the Paragraph Style dialog to specify Space Before and Space After. Use the option “Space Between Paragraphs Using Same Style” to specify the space between the bulleted list items.

   For example, if Space Before is 6 pt, Space After is 8 pt, and Space Between is 0 pt, the bulleted list will have 6 pt before the 1st item, 8 pt after the last item and in between the bulleted list items, space will be 0 pt.

10. Export All Alternate Layouts as PDFs With Layout Name

    I use the alternate layout tool a lot to group different sized content in the same InDesign file.

    While I know I can select the layout as a range during export, it would be a huge timesaver to be able to export all of my layouts as separate PDFs and then just add the alternate layout name to the end of the PDF file.

    Ideally this could be a check box in the export settings "export each alternate layout as a separate file"

    InDesign versions CC2018 and above have an option called ‘Create Separate PDF Files’ in the Export PDF dialog. Using this option, you should be able to export all your layouts as separate PDFs.

11. Add "Unmap All" to Map Tags to Styles

    In the Map Tags to Styles popup panel, please supply a "unmap all tags" button. Sometimes we use the tags to prestyle text, but then apply manual overrides, and want to retain the manual overrides when importing new XML. We currently have to manually remove all mapped styles from the tags before doing that, which can be very tedious when working on large numbers of documents.

12. Password requirements / limitation for publish online function

    We are facing an issue, that we have to use a specific password, which the customer define and we have to use for protecting the documents. It's not allowed, to use a different password.

    This password is longer than 20 characters, but you have rules for the password and one of it is defined, that the password has not to be longer than 20 characters.
    That means for us, we cannot share any Adobe files with these customer, which means, that we have to use competitor tools, which allows a password with more than 20 characters...
    Would be great, when you can extend the max. character amount to 32 or even more.

13. Allow key bindings, shorcuts and function changes for mice

    Similar yet from different worlds, AutoCAD is easy to navigate a layout by zooming in and out with the mouse wheel to where the curser is pointed, as well as to pan by clicking and holding the middle mouse button. Is there a way to do this already? However, it seems that InDesign only allows binding of Keyboard shortcuts. Mouse-bindings can further reduce stress and fatigue when working on documents for extended periods of (Coming from a Civil Drafter of 7yrs). It can also improve the speed of work completed by allowing the user to more fully tailor the InDesign experience to their style.

    Side note - using Esc to de-select tools (or default back to the select tool) would be super handy also, hahah (but I don't want to override any other command that Esc has in the program)

14. Please make the reflect tool work the same way as in illustrator!

    It works completely opposite of Illustrator which makes it super confusing if you're switching between them (i.e. to do the same transformation, you have to use a horizontal reflection in indesign and a vertical one in illustrator.) A preview like in illustrator would be great too.

15. Working with multiple files - When a file is closed, rather than skipping to the last file, got to the next file in order

    Description:

    I have multiple files open at once.

    When finished working on the first, if I close it, InDesign will skip to the last file that was opened, rather the next file in the order.

    See attached - I closed “untitled 1” and it skipped to “untitled 5” rather than going to “untitled 2” which is next in line.

    Why this would be valuable:

    This interrupts an expected workflow to InDesign's usual left to right UI direction.

    InDesign allows users to reorder the file tabs to suit their needs. Skipping to the end file in unexpected behaviour and switching back to the next file in order can be particularly annoying when you have a lot of files open and you need to select the one you want through the dropdown list.

    This has also lead to problems for me in the past when lot of the files look the same, and I've started to edit the wrong file.

16. A new Switch tool

    Instead of ctrl+c, and ctrl+v, it could be invented a new function that switches existing text from a sentence to another. I would find it particularly useful in tables.
    Ex:
    I would like green apples
    I would like yellow lemons

    Select green, ctrl+whatever, select yellow

    Now I have

    I would like yellow apples
    I would like green lemons

17. Making imported PDF edit more obvious in InDesign and fixing delays with mouse clicks

    As a book designer who works with many long manuscripts, I do appreciate being able to import PDF edits into InDesign. That is a great new feature in the last few versions.

    However, some edits are just too hard to spot in a spread. One can easily spot highlighted text (such as when the editors mark a phrase for deletion or replacement). But when the editors insert or delete commas and periods or choose a spot where they want to add new text, there is nothing obvious -- beyond a skinny, nearly invisible cursor -- to draw the eye. The thin cursor can be impossible to spot quickly within a page spread (the fact that it blinks doesn't seem to help), and when one works with books that are 200, 300, 400 pages and more, stopping to search every spread for a barely visible cursor, often multiple times in the same spread, becomes a major headache.

    Currently, I am unable to use the PDF import feature in InDesign without also having the same PDF document open for reference in Acrobat on my second monitor. Working back and forth slows me down, but it is only way I can quickly and confidently find the comma, period, and text insertion edits. Acrobat draws a bold, colored box around each area commented and makes the edit very obvious. This would be such a great feature to add to InDesign.

    Another headache that results from being forced to use both Acrobat and InDesign to ensure I spot all the edits comes when switching back and forth between the two. When one clicks on a comment in Acrobat, that program hesitates a beat before responding, which is annoying enough. But it is worse with InDesign. If you've hopped over to Acrobat and then come back to InDesign, you have to click twice on InDesign's PDF panel before the program will take you to the selected edit.

    I've used this two-program editing method with a great many books so far and still it does not come naturally to click twice on the PDF panel in InDesign, and the need to do so is a constant aggravation. This is nonintuitive in a major way.

    Together, the delays involved in all this back and forth are a huge inconvenience and would perhaps not even be necessary if InDesign somehow called out the edit/insertion points the same way Acrobat does, with a bold box drawn around them. At least one could spot the edits quickly and perhaps would not even have to have Acrobat open at all.

    But when the two programs do still have to be used in concert, it would be great if they each didn't delay in their response to the mouse click.

    So, please consider making these two improvements -- 1) add something like a box or other call out to imported PDF edits in InDesign, especially the small insertion points for commas and periods and 2) do something about the delayed response to mouse clicks in both Acrobat Comments and InDesign PDF Panel when switching back and forth between the two.

    At the very least, could you please consider making imported PDF edits MUCH MORE OBVIOUS in InDesign?

18. Share for review - Select range

    Hi, Loving the share for review feature, makes the proofing process so much easier, thanks adobe!

    Really missing one feature thouh,: our documents often have alternate layouts, and we'd like to have an option for reviewing just one layout at a time, same as the feature in the publish online-tool. Please add.

19. Add Sticky Notes to Incopy like in Acrobat

    The Layout and the the Editors work pretty close together in our company. The ability for the Editors to correct their text in the Layoutview is a nice thing for both... Layout and Editors. But we really miss the "Sticky Note" Feature known from Acrobat. When the Editors try to communicate, that they want changes being applied to the Design, thats not really possible with Incopy right now. For example, the editors would love to click the sticky note tool, so that they could place it right next to a picture and add their notes. For exmample: "make this one bigger", "Erase this on", "Please take Picture 678 instead", and so on.

    We would really need a sticky note feature.

When the Editors try to communicate, that they want changes being applied to the Design, thats not really possible with Incopy right now. For example, the editors would love to click the sticky note tool, so that they could place it right next to a picture and add their notes. For exmample: "make this one… more

20. Swatch-panner [mark] if colors are added with ink management

    If the colors are edited with [ink management]
    than it would be helpful if you can see it in the swatch-panel
    (Like the FullColor-marking behind the swatch)

    and
    Make [ink management]-setting a PDF-export-setting (in LowRes for example)
