1. Linked Illustrator Files Not Displaying Correctly in InDesign

   We are experiencing an issue where Illustrator (.ai) files with linked assets are not displayed correctly when placed in InDesign.

   InDesign does not properly render or recognize the linked content inside the Illustrator file, which affects preview and output accuracy. Currently, the only workaround is to embed all links in Illustrator before placing the file, which increases file size and slows down the workflow.

   Please advise if there is a fix or recommended workflow for handling linked assets between Illustrator and InDesign.

2. Bug: PDF export, replacing text with blank pages mid-document

   This bug has been around for many years now, over many versions of InDesign, at least since 2020, and I think best detailed in the link below, but it seems others have reported issues of the same nature too, to which there are just no replies from Adobe.

   We work on hundreds of books a year, mostly straight text - novels etc - and have found that for no discernible reason, perhaps one time in a thousand, a book will be exported containing blank pages where there should be text, though retaining the book's cropmarks, just deleting the actual text itself. I can share files with any Adobe people who contact me but can't post them publicly for copyright reasons. It's not reproducible, and seems to fix itself even if the file is totally unaltered just by doing a second export. The problem is that it's hard to spot and extremely dangerous to have software that randomly blanks out a few pages for no reason whatsoever. I would expect either a warning or a failure to export if this was the case, but it's just silently generated, with the text blanked out here and there, which makes it completely unreliable and a critical and very expensive failure. Currently running on MacOS Tahoe 26.6.2, InDesign 20.5.2, but this is a bug going back at least 6 years and multiple OSs.

3. ID crashes inserting pictures

   ID crashes inserting multiple pictures, one by one.

   When the crash occurs, I can't do anything—neither save nor go back.

   Little bit annoying because it's crashing every twenty minutes.

4. SVG arrows point the wrong direction, so fix that

   We rely on SVG for our technical diagrams, but InDesign renders them incorrectly. For some reason, all arrowheads point due east in InDesign, regardless of the alignment of the line they reside on.

   Every browser I tried renders the attached SVG correctly. Let's get this fixed, guys. Thanks...

   Wait, you can't attach an SVG here? That's brilliant, Adobe. It's a fundamental format in the domain of these applications. So let me spend my time zipping files up...

   OK, no Zip files either? WTF? I can't wait to banish Adobe from our firm. Absolutely disrespectful, customer-robbing trash.

5. l'import d'image fait buger le logiciel

   Depuis plusieurs semaines, lorsque j'importe un fichier (jpeg, png, eps, ...) dans mon design l'application est ralentie voir à l'arrêt.; Le curseur se transforme en roue de chargement. Je ne peux plus fermer le fichier et l'application. Je suis obligé de passer par le gstionnaire de tâche.

   InDesign 2026 (macOS): every open CEP panel costs ~20–25% CPU continuously — the host redraws the panel at display refresh rate even when the panel is completely static

   Summary

   With any CEP (HTML) extension panel open, the InDesign process burns roughly
   20–25% CPU permanently on a 120 Hz display, with no user interaction and no
   activity in the panel. Each additional open panel adds the same again (three
   panels ≈ 75%). Closing the panel, or collapsing it to a dock icon, returns
   InDesign to its ~5% idle baseline immediately.

   Call-stack sampling shows InDesign's main thread spending ~67% of its time in
   -[MTKView draw] → PlugPlugOwl.framework, which on EVERY display-link tick
   allocates a new MTLTexture, runs a CPU pixel-conversion pass over the whole
   panel bitmap, and uploads the full bitmap with
   -[MTLTexture replaceRegion:mipmapLevel:withBytes:bytesPerRow:] — even though
   the panel's renderer (CEPHtmlEngine) is idle and has produced no new frame.
   The MTKView appears to be in continuous-draw mode at the display's native
   refresh rate rather than paused-and-drawn-on-demand.

   Illustrator 2026 on the same machine, with the same PlugPlugOwl 12.1.0.5
   build, does NOT show this: opening a CEP panel there adds no CPU at all. So
   the issue is in InDesign's hosting of the CEP view, not in CEP/CEF itself.

   Environment

   • Adobe InDesign 2026, version 21.5.1.73 (build 21510)
   • macOS 26.6.2 (25G83), Apple M1 (8-core), 16 GB
   • Display: DELL U2725QE, 3840×2160 at 120 Hz, UI scaled to 1920×1080 (2×)
   • CEP 12.1.0 (CSXS 12); PlugPlugOwl.framework 12.1.0.5 inside the InDesign app bundle; CEPHtmlEngine Chrome/99.0.4844.84
   • CEP PlayerDebugMode = 1 (unsigned development panels), but the panels used are ordinary HTML panels with no special CEF command-line flags
   • For comparison: Adobe Illustrator 2026 (30.8.0) — same machine, same PlugPlugOwl build — is unaffected
   • Persists after a full restart of InDesign: [ ] yes / [ ] no ← fill in

   Steps to reproduce

   1. Launch InDesign, let it settle, watch the InDesign process in Activity Monitor: ~5% CPU at idle.
   2. Open any CEP HTML panel. (Reproduced with three different in-house panels; the one used for the measurements below is a fully static page — no timers, no requestAnimationFrame, no CSS animations, no polling.)
   3. Do nothing. InDesign's CPU rises by ~20–25% and stays there for as long as the panel is open.
   4. Open a second and third panel: each adds ~20–25% more (≈75% with three).
   5. Close a panel: CPU drops by the same amount immediately. Collapse a panel to a dock icon: same — cost goes to zero.

   Expected

   An idle panel should cost ~0%. The host should redraw the panel's view only
   when CEF delivers a new frame.

   Actual

   The host redraws — and re-uploads the full panel bitmap to a NEW Metal
   texture — on every vblank, regardless of whether the panel content changed.

   Evidence

   1. It is the InDesign process, not the panel's renderer. With one static
   panel open (Activity Monitor): InDesign 50–58% (with sample running
   concurrently; ~30% without), the panel's CEPHtmlEngine process 0.8%. A Chrome
   DevTools Protocol CPU profile of the panel page over the same period was
   99.7% idle, and document.getAnimations() returned an empty list — the page
   produced no new frames.

   2. Call-stack sample (attached: indesign-sample-one-panel-open.txt,
   sample <pid> 5 at 1 ms). Of 3465 main-thread samples, 2310 (67%) are:

   -[NSApplication run] … __CFRunLoopRun → _dispatch_main_queue_drain
     → __23-[MTKView __initCommon]_block_invoke (MetalKit)
       → -[MTKView draw]
         → PlugPlugOwl +0xf0ea8 → +0xf03ec → +0xf07ec           (2302 samples)
             ├─ PlugPlugOwl +0xf0da4 → +0xf5b20/+0xf5b64/…   (1216 samples — a per-pixel CPU loop over the panel bitmap)
             ├─ PlugPlugOwl +0xf0874 → -[IOGPUMetalTexture replaceRegion:mipmapLevel:withBytes:bytesPerRow:]
             │     → AGX::Texture::writeRegion / processCompressedRegion2D   (342 samples — full-bitmap upload)
             ├─ PlugPlugOwl +0xf0744 → -[AGXTexture initWithDevice:desc:…] → IOGPUResourceCreate   (35 samples — a NEW texture every frame)
             └─ PlugPlugOwl +0xf087c → _xzm_free_large_huge   (freeing a large buffer every frame)
   

   The CEP CVDisplayLink thread in the same sample shows MetalKit's
   DisplayLinkCallback → dispatch_source_merge_data → _dispatch_runloop_queue_poke
   on every vblank — i.e. the MTKView is running with isPaused = NO /
   enableSetNeedsDisplay = NO at the display's refresh rate.

   For comparison, indesign-sample-panels-closed.txt is the same sample with
   all panels closed: the main thread is ~96% blocked in mach_msg and there
   are no PlugPlugOwl frames at all.

   3. The cost tracks the display refresh rate. Switching the display from
   120 Hz to 60 Hz (nothing else changed) roughly halved InDesign's CPU with the
   panel open (one measurement: 58% → 24%).

   4. The cost tracks the panel's pixel area. Resizing the panel larger /
   smaller moves InDesign's CPU up / down accordingly.

   5. A collapsed (icon-docked) panel costs nothing — consistent with the
   per-frame work being proportional to the view's size.

   6. Illustrator is unaffected. Same machine, same session, Illustrator
   2026 with a CEP panel open stays at ~2% CPU.

   Impact

   Every CEP extension — third-party and Adobe's own — costs a sustained ~20–25%
   of a CPU core per open panel on any 120 Hz display, which includes every
   MacBook Pro since 2021 (ProMotion). Users who keep two or three panels open
   have InDesign sitting at 50–75% CPU all day: lag, fans, battery drain, and the
   effect compounds with other work. Users are unlikely to attribute it to the
   panels since the panels themselves look idle and their renderer processes
   show ~0%.

   Related reports

   • InDesign 2022 17.3 – HIGH CPU when idle
     (community forum, Jul 2022 – Jan 2024, unresolved). Very likely this same
     bug seen from the outside: 30–40% idle CPU in the InDesign process itself
     (the reporter ruled out CEPHtmlEngine when staff pointed at it) on a 16"
     M1 Max MacBook Pro — a 120 Hz ProMotion display — persisting from 17.0
     through the 2024 release. The default workspace includes the CC Libraries
     panel, which is a CEP panel, so a user needs no third-party extension to
     hit it. Quick check for that thread's reporters: collapse the Libraries
     panel to an icon and watch the CPU drop.

   • High GPU load on macOS 26 Tahoe
     (Illustrator UserVoice, also reported for InDesign; status "Started",
     3 Aug 2026: "platform-level compositing issue … flagged with Apple",
     workaround in Illustrator beta 30.8.0.72). Adjacent but NOT the same
     issue — that one is WindowServer GPU with the app's CPU low, whereas this
     is CPU inside the InDesign process in its own MTKView draw. Please don't
     merge them; note that Illustrator 30.8.0, which carries that workaround,
     is the app that does NOT show this problem.

   Suggested fix

   In the InDesign side of the CEP view hosting (PlugPlugOwl's MTKView usage):

   • Run the MTKView paused (isPaused = YES, enableSetNeedsDisplay = YES) and call setNeedsDisplay only when CEF delivers a new frame (OnPaint), the way Illustrator's hosting evidently already behaves.
   • Reuse one MTLTexture per view rather than allocating and freeing one per frame, and skip the CPU conversion + upload when the frame is unchanged.

   Workarounds for affected users

   • Set the display refresh rate to 60 Hz (halves the cost).
   • Collapse panels to dock icons when not in use (cost goes to zero).
   • Keep panels closed rather than open-but-idle.

   Attachments

   • indesign-sample-one-panel-open.txt — sample of the InDesign process, 5 s at 1 ms, one static CEP panel open.
   • indesign-sample-panels-closed.txt — same, all panels closed (baseline).

7. Unable to deselect image in latest update

   When selected multiple boxes (image, text, graphic etc.) In the latest update (21.4) I am unable to deselect the image box using shift if there is an image placed which I used to be able to do. I am currently selecting what I need manually which is a pain when dealing with lots of elements.

8. ID very slow in scrolling with many tables

   When a document has many tables, even if small ones, scrolling is abysmally slow. You can't work on it, since you can't even stop scrolling when expected, since ID continue scrolling to previous or following pages as it likes.

   I had this same document in CS6 on a Mac mini Quad-Core 2012. It was faster than with the latest ID on a Mac mini M4 Pro.

9. Taking much time to load, i have to wait until loading completes.

   I have been using InDesign since 3 years and have handled a lot more heavy files. From 2 days, i have been facing a problem that after placing the subject in frame box, the InDesign starts loading and till the time checking not completed i am unable to do anything else. This is more frustrating because the file is not too heavy.

10. Puntero de mouse queda trabado con icono de reloj y permite trabajar a medias

    Apenas se abre el programa y selecciono una herramienta, el puntero queda trabado con ese icono, permite seleccionar menues pero no puedo hacer nada mas y es mucho peor cuando inserto una imagen, se crashea todo y es imposible tener un flujo de trabajo, no se soluciona incluso al reiniciar el programa. La unica forma de salir es a través de el finalizardor de tareas.
    No puedo deshacer ninguna accion y los menues que se abren estas en blanco.

    If I apply only a "Font Style" without specifying the "Font Family" part, when I apply the style to text, it adds "Font Style" next to "Font Family" (not normal) and also within "Font Style" (normal).

    Steps to reproduce the issue
    1. Launch Adobe InDesign 2026.
    2. Open any document (or create a new blank document).
    3. Work normally for a while, or even do nothing.
    4. Choose “InDesign > Quit InDesign” or press Cmd+Q.
    5. Confirm quitting if prompted.
    Expected result
    InDesign quits cleanly without any error message and returns to the macOS desktop.
    Actual result
    • InDesign crashes on quit every time.
    • macOS shows a crash dialog stating that “Adobe InDesign 2026 quit unexpectedly” (or similar wording).
    • The macOS crash report shows:
    • Exception Type: EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT)
    • Termination Reason: Namespace SIGNAL, Code 6, “Abort trap: 6”
    • Crash is triggered in Thread 10.
    • This happens even after:
    • Resetting InDesign preferences on launch.
    • Deleting InDesign caches and preference folders in the user Library.
    • Completely uninstalling and reinstalling InDesign via Creative Cloud.
    • Testing in a brand-new macOS user account.
    Additional context
    • The same InDesign version (21.2.0.30) on my previous Mac and macOS version did not show this problem; the issue started only after migrating to the new Mac (same InDesign version, newer macOS).
    • No third‑party plug‑ins are installed (or all third‑party plug‑ins have been removed for testing).
    • The crash occurs regardless of which document is open; even a new, empty document triggers the crash on quit.

13. In the "Share for editing": Track changes feature required

    Since many people are going to work on the "Share for editing" feature, there needs to be a log of what changes are made on the cloud so that the designed within INdesign is aware of it once the changes are synced

14. Tables are causing a crash every time I attempt to split or merge a cell in a table.

    In Adobe InDesign 2026 (21.5.1) I am unable to work in tables. Any time I attempt to merge two cells or split a cell vertically or horizontally I experience a crash. I had to downgrade to 20.5.5 to get tables to work correctly. MacOS Tahoe Version 26.2.2.

15. copy paste illustrator zu indesign (und andersrum)

    Wieso kann nicht einfach, wie von allen anderen Programmen, zwischen Illustrator und Indesign copy/paste verwendet werden (und von Indesign zu Illustrator) ?
    Ich will nicht zig mal herumprobieren welche Voreinstellungen jetzt die richtigen sind damit ein Teil des Kopierten ankommt und der Rest nicht oder wieder ein PDF eingefügt wird ohne dass ich weiter am Text arbeiten kann.

    Und wieso stürzt das neue Indesing so oft ab bei copy/paste?

16. Mp4 export – create animated posts for social media directly in Indesign

    In Indesign hat man alles um sinnvoll layouten zu können und sogar die Möglichkeit einfache Animationen einzubauen. Wieso wird der professionelle Workflow nicht verbessert und ein Mp4 Export direkt in Indesign integriert?
    Wieso soll ich auf Adobe Express oder Canva ausweichen oder Dritthersteller Workaround-Plugins verwenden, um einfache animierte Social Media Posts zu erstelllen. Animate und After Effects sind viel zu kompliziert um z.B. ein Balkendiagramm schnell zu animieren. Indesign kann es ja bereits nur der Export fehlt.

17. Disconnected from Share for Review link

    I'm unable to

    a) open the share for review link in Chrome (I get a Disconnected error) and
    b) I can't see any annotations (pins, highlights, and contextual markers) via InDesign review window. I can only see the comments attached to each spread

    AI tells me that: My Share for Review link is no longer synced to Adobe’s cloud review servers.

    Going to adobe.com/files (Creative Cloud > Home > Your Files) = also gives me a disconnected error.
    When I check my account on the top right (in Creative Cloud) = I only see the preload screen like its about to populate
    Going to account.adobe.com (in Desktop) = also gives me a preload screen
    Yes, the show annotations option is on in InDesign.

    I'm guessing Adobe is currently ******** itself – or there's a bug with Share for Review or perhaps its just with my account?

    Mac OS 26.5.2

18. [Data Merge] MacRoman special characters corrupted after updating data source in InDesign 21.5.1

    Product version: Adobe InDesign 21.5.1
    
    Operating system: macOS 26.5.2
    
    Last working version: Adobe InDesign 21.4.1

    Description:

    Since updating to InDesign 21.5/21.5.1, Data Merge incorrectly decodes special characters in legacy MacRoman tab-delimited TXT data sources.

    The same data sources and InDesign documents work correctly in InDesign 21.4.1. In InDesign 21.5.1, special characters such as German umlauts, ß and accented characters become corrupted when “Update Data Source” is used.

    Selecting the source with these import settings does not resolve the problem:

    • Delimiter: Tab
    • Encoding: ASCII
    • Platform: Macintosh

    Re-selecting the data source with the same options also does not reliably restore the characters.

    Steps to reproduce:

    1. Create a tab-delimited TXT data source encoded as Western Mac OS Roman/MacRoman.
    2. Include values containing characters such as ä, ö, ü, Ä, Ö, Ü, ß and é.
    3. Connect the file through the Data Merge panel.
    4. Modify the data source without changing its encoding.
    5. Choose “Update Data Source” in InDesign 21.5.1.
    6. Check the merged-data preview.

    Expected result:

    The updated data is read using the original MacRoman import settings, and all special characters remain unchanged.

    Actual result:

    After updating the data source, special characters are decoded incorrectly and appear as unrelated characters.

    Regression:

    The identical documents and data sources work correctly in InDesign 21.4.1 on the same Mac. Rolling back from 21.5.1 to 21.4.1 resolves the problem immediately.

    This may be related to the new UTF-8 and multiline Data Merge implementation introduced in InDesign 21.5. Please ensure that updating a data source continues to respect legacy encoding and platform settings.

19. can't resize the program window

    I can't resize the program window from the either side or from any corner. Sometimes if i keep trying, it will eventually work, but other times I could try 10 times and it won't resize.
    We are using Windows 11 Pro with dual monitors.

20. collapsed palette panels on the right side don't open

    Collapsed palette panels on the right side don't always open when clicked on, it may work for a while but then stops until I reset my workspace, then it works for a while and then stops again. Clicking icons (sometimes) does not open the palette panels. Resetting the workspace fixes it. We are using Windows 11 Pro. Coworkers have the same issues.
