1. InDesign Cannot Set Actual Text (Accessibility)

   InDesign Cannot Set Actual Text

   InDesign has no way of setting actual text. This can only be done in PDF. Actual text is set when acronyms are used. Access technologies such as screen readers cannot properly read acronyms such as USA. They voice them as words, like "Youusah." Actual text has to be set for the document to be read correctly. This is a painstaking process that requires InDesign users to learn PDF Remediation, a highly specialized skillset that is typically outside the role of the average Graphic Designer. Currently, the process for setting actual text in Acrobat is as follows: Find the acronym in the Tags tree. Open the Accessibility tool and choose Reading Order. Drag a marquee over the acronym and tag it as what it is – paragraph/text or a heading level. The Tags tree will collapse. Open the Tags tree again to find the new acronym Tag. Right click on the new acronym Tag and choose “Properties”. Type the acronym with spaces between each letter in the Actual Text field, for example “U S A.” Spaces will cause the acronym to be read correctly. This issue affects EVERY SINGLE InDesign user who is required to make accessible content. Please make setting actual text an option within InDesign so painstaking remediation is not required.

2. Back/forward buttons to navigate document

   I'm often working on a specific page and referencing other pages within the document.
   It would be handy to have a back button maybe in the Pages panel to jump back to the previous page viewed.

3. Besides entering coordinate values, does InDesign have a function to align two path points?

   For aligning one or two points, the best way is probably to enter coordinate values, but can it be a bit slow sometimes.

   Wouldn't it be cool to have this feature in the alignment panel.

5. Working with multiple files - When a file is closed, rather than skipping to the last file, got to the next file in order

   Description:

   I have multiple files open at once.

   When finished working on the first, if I close it, InDesign will skip to the last file that was opened, rather the next file in the order.

   See attached - I closed “untitled 1” and it skipped to “untitled 5” rather than going to “untitled 2” which is next in line.

   Why this would be valuable:

   This interrupts an expected workflow to InDesign's usual left to right UI direction.

   InDesign allows users to reorder the file tabs to suit their needs. Skipping to the end file in unexpected behaviour and switching back to the next file in order can be particularly annoying when you have a lot of files open and you need to select the one you want through the dropdown list.

   This has also lead to problems for me in the past when lot of the files look the same, and I've started to edit the wrong file.

7. spell check

   Spell check in Indesign is not fit for purpose in its current state, it is slow and clunky and gives no indication of where you are when checking a long document, could it not give a list of words like links panel that you can click to go to? At least implement some sort of progress bar and indication of how man words are incorrect/need reviewing. The forwards and backwards button do not help in any way - i'm sure the reason you need the change direction is only because its so slow and clunky that it goes past a word from clicking and need to go back - so please, either a list of words with word count on how many spelling queries or a progress bar on how many words still to check

8. Clearer comment navigation in share for review

   click on a comment and have the comments panel scroll to the comment clicked, make the active comment highlight more visible and don't unmap comments when the text is deleted but delete the comments with the text.

9. Please make the reflect tool work the same way as in illustrator!

   It works completely opposite of Illustrator which makes it super confusing if you're switching between them (i.e. to do the same transformation, you have to use a horizontal reflection in indesign and a vertical one in illustrator.) A preview like in illustrator would be great too.

10. Add Sticky Notes to Incopy like in Acrobat

    The Layout and the the Editors work pretty close together in our company. The ability for the Editors to correct their text in the Layoutview is a nice thing for both... Layout and Editors. But we really miss the "Sticky Note" Feature known from Acrobat. When the Editors try to communicate, that they want changes being applied to the Design, thats not really possible with Incopy right now. For example, the editors would love to click the sticky note tool, so that they could place it right next to a picture and add their notes. For exmample: "make this one bigger", "Erase this on", "Please take Picture 678 instead", and so on.

    We would really need a sticky note feature.

11. Add "Unmap All" to Map Tags to Styles

    In the Map Tags to Styles popup panel, please supply a "unmap all tags" button. Sometimes we use the tags to prestyle text, but then apply manual overrides, and want to retain the manual overrides when importing new XML. We currently have to manually remove all mapped styles from the tags before doing that, which can be very tedious when working on large numbers of documents.

12. Ribbon and tab interface

    I would like to express my desire to have the current menu bar replaced with a Ribbon and tab interface, similar to what is found in Microsoft Office 2016. I believe this new design would significantly enhance efficiency and usability. The Ribbon format organizes commands and tools in a way that is much more intuitive, allowing users to access the functions they need with ease. Instead of navigating through various nested menus, which can often be cumbersome and time-consuming, the Ribbon provides a clear and visual way to find and use features. Overall, I think this change would greatly improve the user experience and streamline workflows.

13. Export All Alternate Layouts as PDFs With Layout Name

    I use the alternate layout tool a lot to group different sized content in the same InDesign file.

    While I know I can select the layout as a range during export, it would be a huge timesaver to be able to export all of my layouts as separate PDFs and then just add the alternate layout name to the end of the PDF file.

    Ideally this could be a check box in the export settings "export each alternate layout as a separate file"

    InDesign versions CC2018 and above have an option called ‘Create Separate PDF Files’ in the Export PDF dialog. Using this option, you should be able to export all your layouts as separate PDFs.

    With the entry into force on June 28, 2025 of European Directive 2019/882 (European Accessibility Act, EAA), the production of accessible digital documents has become a legal obligation for a wide range of public and private operators working in the European market. The regulation requires that electronic documents — including PDFs — conform to the PDF/UA standard (ISO 14289-1) and the technical standard EN 301 549.
    At present, Adobe InDesign is not capable of natively exporting PDFs that are PDF/UA compliant and verifiable with third-party tools such as PAC. This limitation forces professionals to rely on third-party plugins or manual corrections in Acrobat Pro after every export — resulting in additional costs, operational inefficiencies, and the risk of errors in every production cycle.
    Bringing InDesign into compliance with these requirements is today a legal necessity for thousands of European professionals who use the software daily to produce institutional communications, reports, publications, and technical documents subject to EAA obligations. It would also demonstrate Adobe's genuine commitment to the values of inclusivity and accessibility.
    The native implementation of these features would eliminate dependency on third-party tools, reduce production costs, and ensure that Adobe InDesign maintains a competitive position aligned with the current European regulatory landscape.
    Supporting accessibility is not merely an ethical choice — it is today a concrete responsibility toward the millions of users with disabilities and toward the professionals who produce content for them every day.

15. Object Style default option for the Rectangle Frame Tool (F) other than [None]

    Hello and thank you for the opportunity to offer feedback! I have always used the Rectangle Frame Tool (F), primarily for images but also for text. I am trying to streamline options and defaults in InDesign as my work is now required to make all digital reports and other documents with accessibility requirements for screen readers. In trying to set the default of my frames to the [Basic Graphics Frame] object style with my updated changes or a custom object style, the object style immediately snaps back to [None] when I draw the frame. It doesn't matter how I draw it, when I select the object style, or what I've set to the default, it automatically reverts back to the [None] object style. The Rectangle Tool (M) does not have this same problem. Because frames are a more flexible option for shapes, text, etc., I would appreciate the same features applied for setting defaults with the Rectangle Frame Tool (F). Thank you!

16. Password requirements / limitation for publish online function

    We are facing an issue, that we have to use a specific password, which the customer define and we have to use for protecting the documents. It's not allowed, to use a different password.

    This password is longer than 20 characters, but you have rules for the password and one of it is defined, that the password has not to be longer than 20 characters.
    That means for us, we cannot share any Adobe files with these customer, which means, that we have to use competitor tools, which allows a password with more than 20 characters...
    Would be great, when you can extend the max. character amount to 32 or even more.

17. Making imported PDF edit more obvious in InDesign and fixing delays with mouse clicks

    As a book designer who works with many long manuscripts, I do appreciate being able to import PDF edits into InDesign. That is a great new feature in the last few versions.

    However, some edits are just too hard to spot in a spread. One can easily spot highlighted text (such as when the editors mark a phrase for deletion or replacement). But when the editors insert or delete commas and periods or choose a spot where they want to add new text, there is nothing obvious -- beyond a skinny, nearly invisible cursor -- to draw the eye. The thin cursor can be impossible to spot quickly within a page spread (the fact that it blinks doesn't seem to help), and when one works with books that are 200, 300, 400 pages and more, stopping to search every spread for a barely visible cursor, often multiple times in the same spread, becomes a major headache.

    Currently, I am unable to use the PDF import feature in InDesign without also having the same PDF document open for reference in Acrobat on my second monitor. Working back and forth slows me down, but it is only way I can quickly and confidently find the comma, period, and text insertion edits. Acrobat draws a bold, colored box around each area commented and makes the edit very obvious. This would be such a great feature to add to InDesign.

    Another headache that results from being forced to use both Acrobat and InDesign to ensure I spot all the edits comes when switching back and forth between the two. When one clicks on a comment in Acrobat, that program hesitates a beat before responding, which is annoying enough. But it is worse with InDesign. If you've hopped over to Acrobat and then come back to InDesign, you have to click twice on InDesign's PDF panel before the program will take you to the selected edit.

    I've used this two-program editing method with a great many books so far and still it does not come naturally to click twice on the PDF panel in InDesign, and the need to do so is a constant aggravation. This is nonintuitive in a major way.

    Together, the delays involved in all this back and forth are a huge inconvenience and would perhaps not even be necessary if InDesign somehow called out the edit/insertion points the same way Acrobat does, with a bold box drawn around them. At least one could spot the edits quickly and perhaps would not even have to have Acrobat open at all.

    But when the two programs do still have to be used in concert, it would be great if they each didn't delay in their response to the mouse click.

    So, please consider making these two improvements -- 1) add something like a box or other call out to imported PDF edits in InDesign, especially the small insertion points for commas and periods and 2) do something about the delayed response to mouse clicks in both Acrobat Comments and InDesign PDF Panel when switching back and forth between the two.

    At the very least, could you please consider making imported PDF edits MUCH MORE OBVIOUS in InDesign?

This is a major limitation for users creating academic papers, scientific publications, books, theses, or any long-form documents with sources.Currently, we rely on workarounds like:Drafting in Word with citation plugins (e.g., Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley), then placing static text into InDesign.
    Third-party scripts (e.g., zot2indd for Zotero), which are unofficial and limited.

    Requested features:Native dynamic citation fields (similar to Word's References tab) for inserting in-text citations and auto-generating/updating a bibliography.
    Official plugin/extension support or API integration for popular reference managers like Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley, Citavi, etc.

19. Allow key bindings, shorcuts and function changes for mice

    Similar yet from different worlds, AutoCAD is easy to navigate a layout by zooming in and out with the mouse wheel to where the curser is pointed, as well as to pan by clicking and holding the middle mouse button. Is there a way to do this already? However, it seems that InDesign only allows binding of Keyboard shortcuts. Mouse-bindings can further reduce stress and fatigue when working on documents for extended periods of (Coming from a Civil Drafter of 7yrs). It can also improve the speed of work completed by allowing the user to more fully tailor the InDesign experience to their style.

    Side note - using Esc to de-select tools (or default back to the select tool) would be super handy also, hahah (but I don't want to override any other command that Esc has in the program)

20. Preflight. Hidden pages

    It would be great if we had the option to add hidden pages to the preflight.

    When working with long documents, if your pages panel is small it might be difficult to see a hidden page.

    For translation projects, it might be essential that only text that is going to be visible in the final pdf is actually present in the indd /idml file so hidden pages should be identified and deleted.
