Tab key to navigate through text fields only
In dialog boxes, pressing the tab key should only navigate between text fields. It used to do this. Now it navigates through every field, button and popup menu. There is a system keyboard setting that regulates this. InDesign now ignores this setting.
For example, in the New Document box, press the tab key repeatedly and it goes:
Facing Pages > Start Page # > Primary Text Frame > Page Size > Width ...and so on.
It should only go:
Start Page # > Width ...all those other buttons etc should be skipped.

Text from a paragraph style used in a variable does not carry any character styling
Text from a paragraph style used in a variable does not carry any character styling.
Define a variable using the text of a specific paragraph style. Add character styles to the text (or use a GREP style) and when the text is
pulled" by the variable the character style is not reflected.Often this is used for running headers and footers. Example: if the registered trademark symbol is added to the text, it is regular case in the variable.
This also really screws up the ToC when the paragraph style is used in a ToC

Paragraph shading (and borders) should be able to clip/inset based on the text box
Paragraph shading extends outside of the text box. This is especially annoying when shaded text spans over multiple pages (see screenshot: AutoShading.png). It would be great if it could automatically clip and inset based on the text box—see screenshot: HowItShouldLook.png. The current solutions I can think of are really messy and easily negated.

voice to text
Help us avoid glitches with voice to text directly in InCopy. Yes, we can type into InCopy, but for long documents and articles, all the better with voice to text, to save time, and effort from all the typing. We could read citations right in; read documents in, not have to convert them to Word for Place. Let's get free from Apple/Word conversions and cut/&/pastes, thus the resulting glitches. Wouldn't this doable feature (Apple offers Dictation for free with its package) make Adobe's publishing output even easier and faster to use, and more glitch free from Word? And save…

Ability to add alternate text to long hyperlinks
One of the suggested techniques for complying with WCAG 2.0 AA is to provide alternate text for long urls so that screen readers read the alt text rather than the url when tabbing through. This can only be done in acrobat at the moment. Which means it has to be done every time a PDF is created. We regularly amend our files and have many documents with many long (2 line) urls so it is going to be very time consuming to do this every time we create a PDF. I appreciate one way round it is to have human…

Include Blue Guides When Moving Text/Objects
This feature is seen in Illustrator when you move text or objects around. It either creates a shadow or outline of what you are moving. It really helps me when I am manually aligning objects, especially text. Bounding boxes around text is usually never helpful when used with the alignment tool. This is due to aligning with x-height, and not with descenders/ascenders, which is what the bounding box is around.

export all the text to word
Would it be possible to add a function to export all the text of all blocks, chained or not, from a document in one go to word.
I make directories and my clients always want to recover the text once the published directory to make their changes for the next issue.

Would like to be able to anchor images anywhere and have the text wrap respected
Specific anchor location is important for placements in ePub/HTML exports. However, there are a couple major drawbacks with InDesign's current anchoring abilities.
(1) If an image is supposed to appear after a certain paragraph, but that paragraph ends on the previous spread, you cannot anchor the image to the paragraph it belongs with on the previous spread. (see screenshot: ToPreviousSpread.png). This seems to defeat the purpose of an anchored object. It can't be anchored so will not travel with re-flowing text and it will not Export to ePub/HTML in that specific location.
(2) Images cannot be anchored after their placement…

Allow Data Merge to use .csv with semicolon separated text
Currently one has to use tab separated text (.txt) or comma separeted text (.csv). When using the .csv-export from Excel, it generates semicolons as separators, which is helpful because there may be a comma inside a table cell. So it would be helpful to use this text directly in InDesign.
This might be an issue only in the German version of Excel/InDesign, but it causes a lot of trouble.8 votesThis feature has been implemented in InDesign 2020. Please use this version of InDesign to use this feature.

Copy & paste formatted text between apps
It is beyond baffling that Adobe is so incompetent they have not been able to implement a way to copy and paste formatted text between their own applications. There can only be two reasons we can’t copy and paste formatted text between (for example) Illustrator and InDesign: Either Adobe is unwilling to add this feature or Adobe is incapable of adding this feature.
Even a way to save formatted text between programs then place it would be an improvement over the nothing we have now.

Text Box Auto Size Type
I think we should have the ability to lock a text box so as we type in it, it automatically typesets the copy to always fit in the textbox.

Angled text in table cells
In Cell styles, please let us nominate the angle of the text, don't limit us to the up/down left/right options currently available. I want to put in 45° text.

Put the Tab panel in the Text and Table section of the Window menu
The good old Tabs are still standing strong, and they can still do stuff Tables and Character or Paragraph settings can't, like tab leader dots, align on specific characters, fill to right tabs, etc.
But users are always looking for it under the Text and Table section in the Windows menu. I know, it might technically not behave completely like a regular window/panel. But it looks like a window, it moves like a window, so to most people it's a window...

Make column rules continue in footnotes
If you have a text frame with multiple columns and the footnotes split into columns, the column rules do not continue in the footnotes.

Fill with Placeholder Text dynamically changes when resizing box
When a box has been filled with Placeholder Text and is then resized, it would be really useful if the text still fills the box.
So if you make the box larger, more text would be added to still fill the box. If you make the box smaller, text would be removed so the box is still filled but not overset.

Optical Margin Alignment as part of paragraph styles
It would be very helpful to have the option to include Optical Margin Alignment included in paragraph style sheets.

Make overset text + icon stand out better
Maybe it is just me grappling with this, but I find it extremely hard to see the overset text ‘+’ in the bottom right of the text frames. Sure, I can go to preflight panel and resolve everything from there, but I often fix many other things too as I go and work quite visually. If the box had a red fill and the + was white, it would stand out better. Currently I have to zoom way out to get an idea of where they are.
