1. Paragraph Borders and Shading - Keep in Frame

   I use a P Style for a Tip paragraph in my Quick Reference Cards (QRC). The Tip is typically one or two sentences, and has a light shading (light grey) with a top and bottom blue border. I use a similar style for Warnings, except I change the borders to red. Occasionally, the Tip/Warning falls at the top or bottom of a column, and the Border, and sometimes the Shading, lands outside the text frame.

   Can we have a "Keep in Frame" for Borders and Shading, similar to the one for P Rules? David Blatner had a great workaround when I reached out to him on Twitter; add a P Rule with 0pt, and the Color of None, add appropriate Offset, and turn on Keep in Frame. It works, but it's many steps, where a check box would be much quicker.

2. Rework Grid: Set Grid opacity, Add Grid to Document setting in stead of Preferences

   Grids are very usefull. But when those are In Front, it would be convenient if the opacity could be reduced. 100% opaque makes it hard to make design decisions when the grid is active.

   An old (Xpress legacy?) irregularity, is that Grid settings are part of Preferences, while these should be part of Document Setup.

   Grids belong to a document, not the application.

3. Live Preflight reporting a false error with OpenType Type 1 fonts

   InDesign's Live Preflight will wrongly flag an OpenType Type 1 (PostScript flavored) font as invalid when the font appears in a linked graphic.

   To recreate:
   1. Create an InDesign Preflight Profile
   2. Set it to flag Type 1 fonts as Font Type Not allowed.
   3. Create a new InDesign document.
   4. Add text using an OpenType Type 1 font.
   5. Turn on the preflight.
   The preflight will not signal an error. This is expected and correct.
   6. Now export a PDF of the document created.
   7. Create a new InDesign document.
   8. Place the PDF as a linked graphic into the new document.
   9. Turn on the preflight.
   The preflight will flag any OpenType Type 1 font as "Font not allowed". This is incorrect. The expectation is for it to signal no error.

   Details:
   InDesign 14.0.2
   Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6

5. XML structures and footnotes/endnotes

   This is a point which was subject of lot of discussion since years in several forums. Even this uservoice mentions it (partly) sometime but obviously it hasn't been considered at all.
   In InDesign, a footnote can't contain xml structures.
   In InDesign, it is not possible to map an xml element to the footnote object.
   This is really weird, since:
   a) mapping XML element to an InDesign object is something exiting already for tables thanks to attribute aid:table. So why not having set an attribute aid:note, with values "footnote" and "endnote" and implementing this?
   b) footnotes and endnotes can contain by nature various content such lists, tables, references, etc. which are, in the scope of a XML publishing workflow, subject to specific tagging. In other words, allowing tags in these contents is really a must have. Again in table cells - which are a specific object too, xml tagging is allowed.

   That point plus the lack of management of mathml, is seriously blocking the use of InDesign in the scope of structured content workflow.
   Which is a pity since in the meantime Framemaker - done for structured content - has itself serious lack in its rendering capabilities.

6. Export PDF comments

   InDesign 2019 -- PDF comment import works fine, however what is the point if I cant then export back to PDF for further review and INCLUDE those comments?

   Seems like the import PDF comments without including them in the export to PDF is an incomplete feature.

8. Find/Change: search multiple formats, NOT & OR options, multiple changes, drop-downs

   I work with books, some of them very long and complex. Because I'm strict about styles and consistency, and because the authors rarely are, I have to use Find/Change a lot. It is by far the part of InDesign that I find most lacking.

   1. Instead of clicking to get to find format or change format options, pick from drop-down(s) right there on the F/C dialog. At least for styles (but ideally also for fonts, swatches, etc.).

   2. Search multiple styles at once (but not all styles, as happens when you don't select one in the find format area). For example: find any italic text in the Semibold Caption, Semibold Caption Wide, or Semibold Caption Narrow paragraph styles and change it to Semibold Italic character style without having to do the search 3 times. Another example: When there are several paragraph and/or character styles that came in from an older version of the file or from a Word document and you want to make sure they're not still applied anywhere, you could choose all of them in the find format drop-down rather than having to search for each individually.

   3. Have a "not" option in searches, so we can search for any text (or whatever) that is NOT a certain color, size, etc. For example, find italic text that is NOT in the Body Italic character style, or find any text that is not black (i.e., has any swatch applied other than Black). Especially when there are a lot of things you don't want, such as colors, having to search each one separately is frustrating and eats up a lot of time.

   3b. Add an "or" option. For example, instead of having to search separately for each of several words or characters that need something done to them, be able to enter them all in the search field with something between them that means "OR," or be able to add more search fields, each with something different in it. I'm sure I could use GREP to do this, but if it's only being done once it's not really worth the time and effort. I run into this when there are multiple spellings of a name and I need to make them consistent, or when several different terms throughout a book need to be changed to one other word.

   1. ID should be able to remember what's already been dealt with during a search, even if I do something outside the search dialog and then resume. Example: In authors' files there is often text that has italic applied but should not (maybe they changed a word from italic to regular at some point but didn't know the punctuation was still italic) so I can't just have InDesign change all italics to my character style. I have to search the whole document and address each result indivdually, which is fine. I like that level of control. The problem is that if it finds something italic that should not be, I have to skip it (Find Next) because if I click in the text and change the format of that result, when I resume searching ID will, when it gets to the end of that story (or file, if I'm searching multiple files, as in a book) search all the previous results in the story/file before going to the next one.

   2. A related request is that there be more than one action possible in the change part of the operation. For example, if I'm searching for italics, I'd like to be able to click a Change-1/Find button to apply my style, a Change-2/Find button to apply None, and a Change-3/Find button to apply my semibold italic style.

   3. Each of the buttons in the Find/Change dialog should also be triggered by a key so I don't have to use the mouse every time I don't want to do what I did to the last result so can't hit return/enter.

9. Diagonal strike through text

   Please allow designers to use diagonal strike through text.

   Designer should be able to ...
   - Set the trike through line for single a text selection
   - Define this in a paragraph style
   - Use it as a property in a script
   - choose a direction (top left to bottom right / Bottom left to upper right)
   - define a line thickness and color
   - choose to only display a part of the line below and on top of the text

10. Select multiple objects/images across spreads

    Please develop a way to select multiple object or images across multiple spreads. I have a 300+ page document that needs all images nudged slightly up or down.

11. Isolation mode for InDesign

    Create an "Isolation mode" for a group InDesign, working like in Illustrator.

    Once in isolation mode, only the items in the group are editable. You can select easily multiple items in the Group without touching other items.

12. After data merge, export to split PDF

    I do lots of work that involves creating personalized documents for event attendees (schedules, welcome letters, etc.). I merge attendee data from the registration site. Upon rendering a merged document, I should be able to export each page as an separate PDF using data fields as filenames. "Smith, John Itinerary.pdf" for each person, for example. The workaround for this involves generating and exporting bookmarks to Acrobat, which is convoluted and doesn't always work.

14. Add .psb file format to standard importable files

    Please add the .psb file format to the list of standard importable/placable files. it's the only format Photoshop allows after a certain image size, and i use it quite often when designing big print items that are several square meters in size.

15. 拗促音（小仮名）へのルビの文字かけを許容するオプションの追加

    現在、InDesignのルビ設定「文字かけ処理」では、「無制限」以外のすべての設定において、拗促音（小仮名）への文字かけが許容されない仕様となっています。 しかし、実際の日本語組版、特に縦組みの文芸書においては、拗促音への文字かけが強く求められています。この仕様のために、組版作業において大きな支障が生じています。

    提案

    1. デフォルトの動作は「許容しない」ままとする（既存の仕様を維持）
    2. 環境設定に、ドキュメントのデフォルトを「許容する」に変更できるオプションを新設する

    理由

    • 既存の仕様である「許容しない」は、互換性維持の観点からデフォルトのままとすべき
    • 「許容する」設定は、個々のルビ設定で変更するのではなく、ドキュメントごとのデフォルトとして設定できるようにするのが望ましい。そのため、環境設定で制御できる形が適切である

16. Interactive/Button and Forms/PDF Options - Add Text Field option for flush left, centered or flush right

    Text Fields are all flush left. Add an option to make them flush left, centered or flush right. I create interactive PDFs. Every time I export to a PDF, I open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro and have to manually change Prepare Form/Text Field Properties/Options/Alignment to the desired alignment to "centered" or "flush right" since the default is "flush left." This option would be a great time saver and save on my frustration.

17. publish online accessibility

    Since the web has accessibility standards and guidelines, the documents created and hosted online using Publish Online should follow those guidelines, at least the most basic parts.

    For example, a screen reader cannot read out any text on the pages because all the text is embedded into images. This makes the documents unusable for anybody with vision difficulties.

    Please consider adding an option to create these files with the actual text saved as HTML paragraphs, headers, lists, anchors, etc. This would make it suitable for the web and much more appealing.

18. Show Import Options when Dragging File from Finder

    When Placing a file, there is an option to show Import Options. This is helpful for inserting a select range of pages. It would be helpful if this same option was available when dragging a PDF file from my Desktop/Finder. Often times, I will have my finder window open which contains my projects home directory. Simply dragging the PDF into the InDesign document is much quicker than having to go through the process of locating in File->Place route.

19. make Spell Check and Find/Change operate in page order rather than chronological order of text box creation

    Find/Change and Spell Check seem to function in a random way (they actually search through text boxes in the order in which the boxes were created in the document). In a large document a user can become very confused about how much of the document is searched, especially if he makes changes mid-search.

    It would be much more user friendly if the functions would operate in a page by page order.

20. The current Pantone Plus Color swatches (Color Bridge in particular) are not being updated when the Adobe software updated with updates

    The Pantone Swatches do not update when updating Adobe software in the cloud. And updating with Pantone Color Manager is completely inane.

    I have the most recent update for Adobe (InDesign CC Release 2017.1, and a build of 12.1.0.56 x64) and have loaded the most recent Pantone Color Manager to update the Pantone Plus Color Bridge colors (i started with one color library... updating all libraries would take at least a half day)

    After updating:
    1. I can no longer search for colors as I used to, so I manually have to scroll through the whole list to find the general color and this is very tedious.
    2. The library upgrades are tied to Pantone color swatch book serial numbers. Even when using serial numbers the Color Manager app started telling me after one month of usage that I needed to reactivate because my license was up.

    1. There seems to be no way to delete the old color libraries, and the new ones load at the bottom of the list.

    I know this is a partnership between Adobe and Pantone, however Adobe software is useless if we cannot choose industry standard colors. It's been extremely challenging, especially with a CC subscription.

    Color choice is a basic part of each program, so having this fundamental issue makes it hard to create work, prepare files for printing or uploading while expecting similar results.

    The Pantone Swatches do not update when updating Adobe software in the cloud. And updating with Pantone Color Manager is completely inane.
