Find/Change options for variables
Currently, you can only search for all variables used. But that's it. There is no way to search for the contents of variables or find a specific variable used.

Save INDD file in previous version INDD (e.g. CC 2019 can save in CC 2018)
It would be great if InDesign can save INDD file in previous version INDD (e.g. CC 2019 can save in CC 2018). Yes, I know about IDML but it's not exactly what I need.

Adobe Photoshop or other programs Charts and Infographics
How to easily update creative charts and infographic values made in Adobe Photoshop CS5 or other programs versions. How can all graphical parameters be easily updated, depending on each other? Is there a very practical way to do this?
Thanks

Fitting Content - Define Zoom Percentage
Add a feature to let me define the Zoom percentage instead of just the standard selections. Example, an 8.5x11 from a manual has margins. If the manual needs to be printed smaller, having to place every page into a defined size requires touching every page instead of just enlarge/reduce to a specific size.

Please allow the ID/IC workflow to function with the Creative Cloud Files area
Right now, if you store your InDesign and InCopy files in CC Files and share (collaborate) that folder with your team, all the files are synced EXCEPT the lock files for InDesign and InCopy. This prevents users working on the same project from knowing if someone else has opened an InDesign file or has checked out a story (ICML) file. SO people try to use Dropbox, Google Drive, or Box, all of which have figured out how to sync the lock files for checked-out stories at least. No one as far as I know has been able to sync the…

Production notes
It would be great if I'd have the possibility to add notes to areas which are only internal. Often you have to make tweaks to get the result you want, but when you have to produce the next version, probably a year later, you don't know anymore, why you did what in this way. If I could add notes it would be very helpful.

Enable surveys to be embedded in Publish Online documents.
It would be great, since many people use PublishOnline to generate newsletters and other similar types of documents that are sent to a large audience, to be able to input simple responsive forms (essentially surveys) of 1-5 questions that send answers back to a programmed space either within PublishOnline's dashboard or to a designated space. Or, allow us to embed suveymonkey javascript survey code somewhere so we can track it that way. I was recently asked if I could add a one question pulse survey to my newsletter I create with PublishOnline and can't find an easy solution without just…

Bettter error handling. Stop resorting to hard crashes every time indesign encounters a problem.
Been using InDesign since it began. It completely/suddenly crashes/unexpectedly quits more than ANY program I have ever used. This has been well over a decade on more than a dozen totally different (mac) systems. Some versions have been more stable than others, but the program is consistently crash-happy.
I honestly don't mind that it has some issues—it does a lot and we ask a lot of it, I get it. But what I mind is how horrible it is at dealing with problems. Does it have to completely CRASH every time it gets confused? It's like it throws its hands…

Snap-to status indicators
Add an indicator somewhere that's always visible that displays the current status of the Snap-to-Guides and Snap-to-Document-Grid controls. It could also act as the on/off switch for them.
Now there's no way to tell if the snap-to mode is engaged or not without either dragging something around to see if it snaps-to a guide or grid, or going into the View > Grids & Guides pull-down menu.

Data Merge - allow "export to PDF" to have all features of regular PDF
When using the data merge function of InDesign, it is currently not possible to export to a PDF with the same functionality as exporting a PDF from a regular document - several checkboxes such as "Create Tagged PDF" and include hyperlinks are greyed out. I've written a much more detailed article about it here: https://colecandoo.com/2016/12/17/data-merge-pdf-export-vs-regular-pdf-export/

InDesign Dimmable Layers
I think it would be great if we could have an option to dim a layer similar to Illustrator. I think it would be a benefit when aligning elements above a background layer.

Center-point auto-selected when rotating images in a content frame
I want this to be something I can set in InDesign with my workspace. If it isn't automatically set to centerm then allow me to change the preferences for the whole program.
I make manuals that require six photos a page, and I am always having to select the center point square in the rotation toolbar.
I would like the option for this to be my default.

Section specific controll of the "based on" featues in paragraph styles
Add a checkbox to each menu under the paragraph style options, to let the user check if a set of options should be inherited or overwritten.
A bit like the way we define specific live attributes when creating object styles.
The goal is to give the user greater control and insight into what attributes are overwritten, and easily add/remove/change them.

Multiple styles per element with cascade like CSS
So many documents get output into electronic formats now. The limitation of only one style per element (paragraph, character, object) makes it difficult to map what is happening in InDesign to good HTML and CSS.
If InDesign allowed multiple styles to be applied to an element, with cascade rules like CSS, then electronic output would be easier and the quality of generated markup could be improved. In addition, being able to apply simple style changes to override more comprehensive styles would simplify documents and reduce the number of styles needed to make little variations of design possible..

Managing Multiple Sets of Endnotes In a Document AND allowing Endnotes to refer to a separate INDD Document
Issue #1:
Here's my first dilemma: I am building a book with several hundred pages. This book will be printed (won't be an eBook/iBook). I'm keeping each chapter as its own document that I will then collect together as a larger Book at the end. The last chapter will be just for all the book's endnotes. In previous versions of InDesign, I would import the Word document, delete the endnotes out of the "Chapter x" document, and pop them back into the "Endnotes chapter" without affecting the superscripts referencing the endnotes throughout the text. Easy. Now, in cc 2018 if…98 votes
