Include page count in XMP
The XMP metadata included in an InDesign file does not include the page count. This makes it difficult for thrid party solutions such as digital asset management systems not running InDesign or InDesign Server to display the page count to their users for InDesign files.
There is a standardized XMP element called xmpTPg:NPages which is supposed to contain the page count for multi-page documetns. https://developer.adobe.com/xmp/docs/XMPNamespaces/xmpTPg/ This should be included in the XMP by InDesign.

Add scrolling feature to Publish Online
I create decks for brands and companies, and we often need to use interactive elements like videos and gifs — so we need to publish them online.
Because of smartphones, the design of most websites now, and the way people read PDFs in 'Reader', people expect to be able to scroll rather than clicking left and right.
I'm having a lot of requests now to create documents in non-adobe programmes, like Readymag — purely because they offer scrolling.
My contemporaries are having the same.
I hope this would be a small fix for Adobe, because it would make a huuuuge…

The hope of developing a new vertical effect of CJk text
(If you only want to read the core content, please go directly to the end of this article)
(This document is designated to be delivered to Adobe Japan)
————————
Dear Adobe Japan:
Thank for your attention and helping. On behalf of my region, I would like to make a request boldly to your company about the new effect of vertical typesetting.
The existing versions of indesign equipped with CJK typesetter and applicable to East Asia have only one text arrangement direction for vertical text arrangement - the first column inherited is on the right, from right to left from ancient…

disable launch image
Disable Launch Image
I do not think the launch images in photoshop, indesign and illustrator are culturally sensitive. They should not include any people especially not raunchy females. They should be totally neutral - landscapes, nature, no people please!!12 votes -
Font Height Reference. Can we have this existing Illustrator functionality for Indesign?
This is very useful for producing legible large-format environmental graphics. Often distance legibility tables are based on the x-height or the cap height. Being able to set these directly without an Em box look-up will save a significant amount of time.

Change text & add button on message window when trying to close a file while background task is running
When you try to close a file while a background task is running you get a warning (Screenshot A). The word "cancel" appears there 4 times, so a fast reader would think clicking on "Cancel" will cancel something. But that's wrong. If you click on "Cancel", the window is closing. Nothing else.
So please change the button to "Close" (and in the German version to "Schließen" instead of "Abbrechen") to make clear nothing is cancelled.
In addition to that it would be nice to have a second button that helps the user to get directly to the background task panel.…

Having a handover / sign-off feature when using share for review.
Having a handover / sign-off feature when using share for review. This will inform the 'designer' that the client has completed making comments/changes.

nest pages
The pages panel is the most ridiculously cumbersome thing in the world!
I make digital planners and regularly work with documents that are over 2k pages long- there is SO MUCH SCROLLING OH MY GOD
Please make pages nestable where we can group them together and expand or hide as necessary like photoshop layers folders.
if designers are working on a book there's absolutely no need to see the entire book all the time - being able to work chapter by chapter is so much easier to manage than scrolling for a month! Also the scrolling in the pages panel…

Add Javascript for creating interactive Documents
So I had the nice task of creating an interactive PDF document. It needed a bit more logic than Indesign had to offer, so I was forced to use Javascript.
Because Indesign can't add Javascript, the design file and the logic file were separated. I was forced to manually connect the two every time I needed to make a change in Indesign, adding nearly 40 hours to my workload and completely destroying my workflow.
Just being able to add the scripts to the elements would have saved so much time.

Object Styles Positioning from inner margin (spine)
For the last few years or from as long as I can remember, I am having to have two styles for each action. So the most simple action I do is a Full Page bleed image box. On the outer margin it has an additional 3mm. This is set from the inner margin out. However I have to always create to styles, one for the left and page and one for the right. It would be so useful to have 'from Spine' as an option as a reference point.

Please make it possible to bulk edit colors in a merged document.
I often need to make a global color changes like you can in Illustrator. After spending an hour manually editing the spacing for each entry (some cursive fonts have funky spacing), it's maddening that I can't then change the color in the merged file when the color is coming out wrong in print. Please help!

Nested bullet styles
Bullet lists should have nested styles similar to Numbered lists and let us choose which symbol to use for each bullet level.

Same Gradient-Tool as in Premiere Pro?
In generell - why not make all tools more consitent? Gradients in InDesign are still way behind Illustrator, while both lack the elegant, intuitive rubber band of Premiere Pro's gradients. I think, everyone would love the Premiere Pro-version in InDesign (and Illustrator, too, because it doesn't feel that fluid there!).

Conditional no-break in character styles
I want an option to make no-break in character style, but if it's impossible to keep text in frame, breaking would be possible.
For example, usually I don't want to break a hyperlink in text and if I make it no breaking, very long URL's makes it impossible to keep text running in text frames.
I think there is a workaround with GREP's but that's not really solid solution for this.3 votes -
Would like to be able to anchor images anywhere and have the text wrap respected
Specific anchor location is important for placements in ePub/HTML exports. However, there are a couple major drawbacks with InDesign's current anchoring abilities.
(1) If an image is supposed to appear after a certain paragraph, but that paragraph ends on the previous spread, you cannot anchor the image to the paragraph it belongs with on the previous spread. (see screenshot: ToPreviousSpread.png). This seems to defeat the purpose of an anchored object. It can't be anchored so will not travel with re-flowing text and it will not Export to ePub/HTML in that specific location.
(2) Images cannot be anchored after their placement…

Improving the various options of footnotes
In one of the latest versions of InDesign, endnotes have undergone a significant upgrade as they have become live endnotes than static endnotes. But unfortunately, the footnotes are left far behind.
We really ask that you rewrite the footnote feature so that the following features are possible:
1) Select all the footnotes at once (by Cmd + A or Ctrl + A)
2) Option to split footnotes into a number of columns is different from the main text (not just span footnotes but complete control over the number of columns)
3) Continuous footnotes in the same paragraph (run-in).
4) Possibility…622 votes -
Work in Whole Pixels (Snap to Pixel Grid)
When working in a document whose intent is Web or Mobile it would be great if InDesign had an option to force users to work in whole pixels.
Not to be confused with InDesign's "Snap to Document Grid", what I am thinking is something more like Photoshop's behaviour when your Preferences -> Tools has "Snap Vector Tools and Transforms to Pixel Grid" selected.
The outcome would be that you could never have a page item with floating point values.

Would like to be able to apply formatting to text variables
You should be able to somehow apply formatting to text variables. (See screenshot: TextVariable.png). The running header on the right hand page is based on the "chapter title" on the left hand page, but the italics can't be applied. It would be nice if you could apply a GREP style, or even a nested style, to the paragraph style that is applied to running header.
