  1. Directly create transparency on letters/words in a text frame

Currently it is not possible to define a letter or words within a text frame with a certain percentage of transparency. It is only possible to adjust the Tint. In the Effects Panel, the Transparency options are greyed out (not accessible).

Sometimes in a design you want to create such text effects, which at the moment can only be achieved with a workaround: an anchored text frame which poses several challenges if the transparent text runs over several lines.

Affinity Publisher offers this right out of the box in the current version (2.3.1). Quark Xpress can do this as well.…

  2. InDesign Cannot Set Actual Text (Accessibility)

    InDesign Cannot Set Actual Text

InDesign has no way of setting actual text. This can only be done in PDF. Actual text is set when acronyms are used. Access technologies such as screen readers cannot properly read acronyms such as USA. They voice them as words, like "Youusah." Actual text has to be set for the document to be read correctly. This is a painstaking process that requires InDesign users to learn PDF Remediation, a highly specialized skillset that is typically outside the role of the average Graphic Designer. Currently, the process for setting actual text in Acrobat is as…

  3. TOC - Update page numbers only

Update page numbers only in TOC (like it is possible in a common Text Processing software) would save a lot of time, as we often insert styling and manual line warps in the TOC for aestetical reasons and have to redo it as TOC has to be refreshed and overwrites everything.

The suggestion in this forum to create Cross-References would also be a nice solution to this problem.

  4. "Create Outlines" should automatically "convert bullets and numbering to text" first.

Currently you have to remember to select "Convert bullets and numbering to text" before you also select "Create Outlines." This should not be a two part process as there would never be a time when a designer would suddenly want the bullets and numbers to disappear when making outlined text for a printer.

  5. Emoji for Print: Update EmojiOne Color and Support COLR Fonts

I work for a large book publisher and more and more books (especially YA) include a lot of emoji. To the point that having to replace all emoji with art is a tedious process. For workflow efficiency and for accessibility issues, we utilize emoji fonts and convert them to outline, then color correct for print (grayscale or CMYK). That way we can support diverse emoji and preserve the unicode values so that characters are maintained as manuscripts go from Word to InDesign.

Right now, emoji fonts that support shading and skin tone/hair color options come in two flavors--OpenType SVG and…

  6. Paragraph Rules Improvements

I would be great if the Paragraph Rules menu received a couple of improvements:

    1) Add a chain link for when you want both the Color and Gap Color to be the same. Likewise for the Tint and Gap Tint percentage.

    2) This one is a bit difficult to explain, but one of the biggest annoyances with using Paragraph Rules to apply a RULE ON to text is that the rule expands/contracts in an undesired way if you change the size of a text box or if you add/delete something from the text. What should happen is that the rule…

  7. Make share button neutral

The new SHARE button is very blue. In Photoshop we have the option to make it interface colored. Same in Illustrator. InDesign dosen't.

Improve InDesign's accessible PDF creation workflow to make it easier to generate WCAG 2.1 compliant PDFs, in line with EU legislation.

  9. More options when resizing a layout

If I need to resize a page/layout using Document Setup, ideally for me, all of the existing content would remain at the top of the page, so a new, taller page size would add more space at the bottom, or if I wish to shorten a page, empty white space would be removed from the bottom. InDesign 19.2 centers all content vertically on the new page size, which I can't imagine anyone would ever want, forcing the unnecessary step of moving everything back to the top of the new page. You could add a Photoshop-style grid icon to show where…

  10. Help Tab Search Feature

On iMac I have a search feature under the help tab. On Windows I do not and I am struggling to find things in the program now!

  12. New “Hide Spread/Show Spread” feature: automatic page number adjustment

I was excited to discover the new 'Hide Spread/Show Spread' feature in InDesign. Page numbers on visible spreads don’t adjust automatically when other spreads are hidden in the document. Thus the feature becomes useless for any document that uses page numbers – at least within my workflow.

  13. Batch Rename Multiple Layers at once. Find/Change Names of Layers.

Would be nice to rename multiple Layers at once in Indesign like renaming Files in a Finder-Folder. Or with a additional function for Find/Change.

Usecase in the picture below. Have to rename several Layers for exporting with scripts. Always double-click is annoying. Would improve my Workflow a lot.

  14. Accessibility: DESPERATELY need to input table summaries in Indesign. Before exporting to Acrobat

Accessibility: Long form print/digital/W3C-ADA designers need to be able to input table summaries in Indesign. I update an Accessibility Document 2-3/year. +325 Tables/25 pgs. This one project that is coupled with a 240 page digital catalog is the bain to my existence. Having to redo the Table Summary work every interation is TORTURE.

  15. Create (H) Header and (P) Paragraph style on same line to produce a TOC and 508 Accessible document (Run-in Running variable))

Create (H) Header and (P) Paragraph style on same line that will pickup the styles when I produce the TOC and make the document accessible.

I understand this can be done in FrameMaker.

If a programmer can make it happen in FrameMaker, they should be able to make it work in InDesign.

    Thank You, Linda

  16. Opentype + Glyphs UI Menu Preview

The UI for Opentype is extremely difficult and time consuming to use. The entire thing needs to be set up like Illustrator, with one addition: PREVIEW TYPOGRAPHIC FEATURES (especially the stylistic sets).

This UI feature should behave just like the Fonts Menu: When you open the font family menu with text highlighted, each font you hover over previews on your selected text.

This needs to be replicated for Opentype and Glyphs. So once you open the dropdown for stylist sets or glyphs, each style you hover over, will preview in real time on your selected text or in a pop…

  17. Layer Arrangement (Send to Current Layer)

Like it is in Illustrator, it would be super nice if there was a right-click option under >Arrange that would allow you to "Send to Current Layer." just small + quality of life, but it's how I'm used to working in Ai and would be nice to see additional congruency between these kinds of things!

  18. Please Add "Screen" Intent Option for Creating New Documents

Please add a new Intent option called "Screen" as a choice when creating a new INDD file. The current choices of Print, Web, and Mobile don't cover what I need for creating PPT backgrounds for slide shows, stills and lower thirds for our video team. Page sizes could be at least: 1366 x 768, 720p, 1080p, and possibly 3840 x 2160 for 4K. This would save time from rifling through the other options for the right dimensions, creating a custom size, changing measurements, and changing color profile.

  19. Possibility to control Superscript/Subscript, i.e., 40% if >XX font size, 65% if<XX font size

In "Advanced Type" (in settings) I can control Superscript, subscript and Small Caps. Many fonts has got a gigantic and ugly ® (registered trademark) and needs to be shrunk. Sadly, that shrinks the ® in normal body copy too much. It would be great if I could have options in Advanced Type to control it more.
E.g., 40% size and 65% baseline if bigger than 36 pt font size, and some other setting for anything smaller than that size.

  20. Pages Folders!
