1. Double-clicking one document in a Book can open every selected document and leave InDesign trapped in recovery

   InDesign version: 21.5.1 x64
   Operating system: Windows 11

   Steps to reproduce

   Open an InDesign Book containing many documents — in my case, approximately 80.
   Select all documents in the Book panel in order to export the complete book to PDF.
   After the export is finished, double-click one particular document in the Book panel because you want to open only that document.
   InDesign begins opening every document that remained selected after the PDF export.

   Expected result

   Double-clicking a particular document should open only the document that was double-clicked.

   If opening every selected document is considered intentional behaviour, InDesign should at least:

   warn the user that a large number of documents are about to be opened;
   ask for confirmation;
   provide a clear way to cancel the entire operation after it has started.

   Actual result

   InDesign starts opening every previously selected document without warning or confirmation. There is no practical way to cancel the overall operation.

   In my case, every document also displays a modal dialog asking whether the document’s hyphenation exceptions or the current user-dictionary settings should be used. However, this dialog is not a cancellation mechanism: both Yes and No continue opening the documents, and there is no Cancel button for the overall operation. The only apparent way to stop the process is to force-terminate InDesign.

   Paradoxically, without these dictionary-conflict dialogs, InDesign would silently open all approximately 80 documents without asking anything at all.

   Force-terminating InDesign can make the situation considerably worse. On the next launch, InDesign may attempt to recover or reopen the large number of documents that were open when the application was terminated. The application can therefore become trapped in another long and effectively uncontrollable sequence during startup. Restarting InDesign no longer provides an obvious way out.

   An experienced user may know that deleting or moving the contents of the InDesign Recovery folder can interrupt this cycle. An ordinary user cannot reasonably be expected to know where this hidden recovery data is stored or that it must be removed manually. From the user’s perspective, InDesign may appear permanently broken, leaving reinstallation as the only apparent remedy.

   The retained multiple selection is particularly easy to overlook because the row that was double-clicked is highlighted differently from the other selected rows. A user can therefore reasonably believe that the double-click applies only to that document.

   I use and pay for Adobe InDesign on behalf of the Szent Jeromos Katolikus Bibliatársulat (St Jerome Catholic Bible Society) for professional Bible publishing. This occurred immediately after successfully generating the complete PDF of a 1,504-page Bible. A professional publishing application should not allow one accidental double-click to launch an application-blocking operation involving approximately 80 documents, offer no usable cancellation mechanism, and then potentially prevent the application from starting normally after forced termination.

   InDesign version: 21.5.1 x64

2. Cursor flickering throughout InDesign 21.5.1 on macOS Tahoe

   Since updating InDesign from 21.5 to 21.5.1, the cursor flickers and repeatedly switches between different pointer shapes/icons while working in InDesign. This occurs throughout the application, including over text, tables, frames and the pasteboard.

   System:

   MacBook Pro (2021), Apple M1
   macOS Tahoe 26.5.2
   InDesign 21.5.1
   Apple Magic Mouse
   Normally using two external monitors (one HDMI, one USB-C)

   Troubleshooting performed:

   Restarted InDesign and macOS multiple times
   Reset InDesign preferences
   Disconnected both external monitors and tested using only the MacBook display — the flickering continued
   Tested Photoshop — no cursor flickering
   Tested InDesign 20.5.4 — no cursor flickering
   Reverted InDesign from 21.5.1 back to 21.5 — the cursor flickering stopped

   The problem therefore appears to have been introduced in InDesign 21.5.1. The same hardware, mouse and macOS configuration work normally with InDesign 21.5.

   Please investigate the cursor/UI rendering changes introduced in 21.5.1 on Apple Silicon Macs running macOS Tahoe.

   Since updating InDesign from 21.5 to 21.5.1, the cursor flickers and repeatedly switches between different pointer shapes/icons while working in InDesign. This occurs throughout the application, including over text, tables, frames and the pasteboard.

3. InDesign 21.5 — kImportAndPlaceCmdBoss fails with error 29441 on Volumes network-mounted paths

   kImportAndPlaceCmdBoss returns error 29441 ("Cannot place this file. No filter found for requested operation") when placing image files located on SMB/WebDAV network volumes mounted under Volumes. The same file, same mount, and same plugin code succeed in InDesign 21.4.

   Steps to Reproduce
   1. Mount a network share via SMB/WebDAV so it appears as /Volumes/<servername>/
   2. Confirm the target image file exists on the mount (stat returns valid inode)
   3. From a plugin, call kImportAndPlaceCmdBoss with the file path pointing to the mounted volume
   4. Observe error 29441 after approximately 7 seconds (network I/O timeout)

   Expected Behavior
   Image is placed successfully, as it was in InDesign 21.4.

   Actual Behavior
   ProcessCommand(kImportAndPlaceCmdBoss) blocks for ~7 seconds then returns 29441. ErrorUtils::PMGetGlobalErrorString() returns:
   Cannot place this file. No filter found for requested operation.

   For log detail please check attachment.

   kImportAndPlaceCmdBoss returns error 29441 ("Cannot place this file. No filter found for requested operation") when placing image files located on SMB/WebDAV network volumes mounted under Volumes. The same file, same mount, and same plugin code succeed in InDesign 21.4.

4. 'Save As' doesn't clear the undo stack

   InDesign version: 21.5.1.73

   Saving a document using Save As should clear the undo stack, but InDesign stopped doing that. This is a problem because the over time, the undo stack increases a document's size enormously.

   To reproduce the problem:

   1. Open the attached document. It has three small text frames on page 1: one placed, two duplicates.
   2. Verify the document's undo stack: in the Edit menu you'll see Undo Duplicate. Press Ctrl+Z a few times and the frames are removed.
   3. Use Save As to save the document.

   Expected result: The undo stack should have been removed, Ctrl+Z should do nothing.

   Actual result: The undo stack is not deleted. Ctrl+Z does not remove the frames.

   InDesign version: 21.5.1.73

5. Adobe InDesign Freezes and Does Not Close

   Adobe InDesign frequently freezes while I am working. The application becomes completely unresponsive, and the mouse pointer changes to the blue spinning loading cursor. I cannot close the program normally and have to force it to close using Task Manager.

   This issue interrupts my work and may cause unsaved changes to be lost. Please investigate the cause and provide a solution.

6. Find/Change Custon Queries and Multi-Find/Change Extension

   The latest update to Indesign (verision 21.5.1) breaks Multi-Find/Change Extension and Custom (save) Queries menu in the Find/Change dialog box. As of the update I can perform only 1 task in Multi-Find Change. The task can be running a set of queries or importing a set or exporting a set. Whatever you do, you can only do 1 thing before crashing. Trying to do a second task results in a crash and quit of Indesign. Also the menu of saved queries in the Find/Change dialog is glitchy: sometimes showing and sometimes doing nothing. (Maybe this has something to do with the latest half-*** beta AI feature allowing conversation searching?) Had to revert to previous version.

7. Pre-composed Hebrew characters do not track

   InDesign 21.1 ME
   Pre-composed Hebrew characters in many Hebrew fonts do not track through the Character panel, though precomposed Latin characters do (see image, line 5 versus line 9). I would expect that they track like any other discrete character.

8. Object Export Options / addig Alt Text issues

   1) InDesign 21.5 on MacBook Pro Tahoe 26.6.1

   I'm experiencing various issues when adding Alt Text to images. The longer I work with the Object Export Options dialog, the more likely it becomes that one or more of the following issues will occur:

   A) The Object Export Options dialog is open and an image is selected. The existing Alt Text is highlighted and a new text is entered, but instead of replacing the existing Alt Text, the new text is inserted into a new text frame on the page.

   B) An object is selected and the Object Export Options dialog is open. Alt Text is entered, and then the next object is selected. However, the text displayed in the Alt Text field does not update, even though the newly selected object has different Alt Text assigned or no Alt Text at all. The Object Export Options dialog must be closed and reopened before it reflects the correct Alt Text.

   C) No object is selected and the Object Export Options dialog is opened. A graphic frame is then selected, but the Alt Text options remain greyed out and cannot be edited.

   D) When the Object Export Options dialog is opened with no object selected, all Alt Text-related options sometimes remain greyed out even after selecting different objects.

   Feature Requests:

   I) Generating Alt Text takes a moment, but there is no visual indication that the generation process is in progress. It is unclear whether clicking the button was successful until the generated text eventually appears. Please add a progress indicator or other visual feedback while Alt Text is being generated.

   II) Why is there no keyboard shortcut available for opening the Object Export Options dialog? It would significantly improve accessibility workflows and efficiency when adding Alt Text to large numbers of images.

   1) InDesign 21.5 on MacBook Pro Tahoe 26.6.1

10. When the UI size is not the smallest, the effective area of the function that is forced to scroll when text is entered near the panel will s

    The version that occurred: InDesign 18.3 or later,
    and the previous version is likely to have a similar problem.

    Steps to reproduce the issues:
    *Preferences > Enlarge/Reduce UI > Set the UI size to as the minimum
    *Create a text frame
    *Scroll and adjust the document so that the text insertion point comes near the right/bottom of the panel
    *Enter text

    Expected result:
    Text is entered, but inadvertent scrolling does not occur.

    Actual result:
    When you enter text in a position covered by the panel, the function of forcing scrolling works. Due to the influence of the UI scale, there is a shift in the panel area from the upper left corner of the document.
    When the UI size is the maximum, about twice the coordinate area is the area where forced scrolling occurs.
    The same is true for the icon panel.

    The version that occurred: InDesign 18.3 or later,
    and the previous version is likely to have a similar problem.

    Steps to reproduce the issues:

    Environment

    • Adobe InDesign 21.5.1
    • macOS Ventura 13.7.8
    • Intel iMac
    • French version of InDesign

    Problem

    In InDesign 21.5.1, assigning a color to the **File > Export… command through Edit > Menus… causes the Export dialog to display only Adobe PDF (Print) when the dialog is opened from the File menu.

    All other export formats disappear.

    However, if I open the same Export dialog using the keyboard shortcut Command + E, all export formats are available normally.

    Removing the color assigned to File > Export… immediately restores all export formats when using the File menu.

    The problem is therefore specifically related to assigning a color to the Export… menu command.

    Steps to reproduce

    1. Launch InDesign 21.5.1.
    2. Create a new blank document.
    3. Choose File > Export….
    4. Check the Format menu in the Export dialog.

    Result: all normal export formats are available.

    1. Cancel the Export dialog.
    2. Go to Edit > Menus….
    3. Assign any color to File > Export….
    4. Confirm the menu customization.
    5. Choose File > Export… again.

    Result: the Format menu now contains only Adobe PDF (Print).

    1. Cancel the dialog.
    2. Press Command + E instead.

    Result: all export formats are available again, even though the Export menu command is still colored.

    1. Go back to Edit > Menus… and remove the color from File > Export….
    2. Choose File > Export… again.

    Result: all export formats are restored.

    Additional tests performed

    I performed several tests to isolate the cause.

    • The issue occurs with both a temporary menu customization and a saved custom menu set.
    • The issue occurs regardless of which color is assigned to Export….
    • Coloring another menu command, for example an item in the View menu, does not cause the problem.
    • The issue occurs with both Adobe default workspaces and custom workspaces.
    • Switching workspaces does not appear to be the actual cause.
    • Using the default, unmodified menu always allows access to all export formats.
    • Using Command + E always allows access to all export formats, even while the File > Export… menu command is colored.
    • Removing the color from Export… immediately restores normal behavior.

    I initially suspected corrupted preferences because resetting the InDesign preferences restored all export formats. After progressively restoring my custom settings, however, I was able to isolate the problem specifically to the color assigned to the File > Export… menu command.

    Expected behavior

    Assigning a color to a menu command should only change its visual appearance.

    File > Export… and Command + E should invoke the same Export command and display the same complete list of available export formats.

    Actual behavior

    When File > Export… is assigned a color:

    File > Export… → only Adobe PDF (Print) is available.
    Command + E → all export formats are available.

    Removing the menu color restores the expected behavior.

    This appears to be a reproducible bug in the interaction between menu-item color customization and the Export… command in InDesign 21.5.1.

12. Indesign struggling to do anything and lagging

    I haven't had a problem with Indesign when I started using it, but the more I use it the more a pain it is being. I am a university student for graphic design and we need to use Indesign to create our portfolios. It started with a little lag when trying to scroll, but now I sruggle to get into the app, it takes hours and when I finally get in the app it takes more hours to open my portfolios. Once I am finally in my portfolio and want to start doing my work, even just moving the mouse cursor slightly causes it to lag for minutes. I don't have time for this to happen. I have submissions to complete and a lot of work needs to be done. Fix the problem properly because it is on the most current version it can be and is updated. Fix this quick because I am not the only one with this problem

13. Issues with running GREP formula more than once

    InDesign Version: 21.4.1

    I am formatting an Author Index. Some of the authors in the book that I am working on come in with multiple authors per paragraph with the corresponding page number listed once at the end. I use GREP to separate the authors onto their own lines with the page number.

    GREP formula:
    Find: ^(.+?), (.+)\t(\d+)$
    Change To : $1\t$3\r$2\t$3

    The format I start with:
    Coby Morvinski, Yaniv Shani 1086

    The format I finish with:
    Coby Morvinski 1086
    Yaniv Shani 1086

    I have to run this formula multiple times so that it separates the larger groups (there can be up to 12 authors per paragraph). It does just fine for the first 3-4 times, and then will start causing InDesign to crash. The only fix I have found is to copy the authors out of InDesign, run the GREP formula through an outside app like Sublime Text and then copy it back into InDesign.

    Things that I have tried:
    -Computer Restart
    -Clearing preferences,
    -Saving the file as a .idml
    -Copying out a smaller portion of text into a new document and just running the GREP on that.
    -Working through the document by selecting “Change/Find” instead of “Change All”

    I can run a new GREP formula and it will work fine. It is only when I go back to re-running the formula that originally caused the crash that it will start crashing again. This is not the only GREP formula that I have trouble with when I try to run it multiple times.

14. PDF export do not work with big documents

    Mac mini M4 24 GB
    Tahoe 26.5.2 (25F84)

    Document 1834 pages
    3 colums
    It contains only running text—no images—using paragraph and character styles. It is entirely in Times New Roman. The document is simple, though it is quite long.

    It creates a 0 KB PDF file and just keeps spinning without ever finishing. There are no error messages. The "Force Quit" menu shows nothing unusual.

    It is impossible to print using any of the "Adobe PDF Settings" options—such as "Press Quality," "High Quality Print," etc.

    A friend tried printing the file from an older version of InDesign on a PC, and the document printed correctly and quickly using any of the PDF output settings.

15. InDesign Relink Search do not find files on SMB share

    We're experiencing an issue when attempting to relink missing assets stored on an SMB network share.

    Environment

    Adobe InDesign (Latest Version)

    Files stored on an SMB network share.

    macOS (Fully up to date)

    The Problem

    When a linked file is missing and we choose Relink in InDesign, searching for the filename returns no results, even though the file exists on the SMB share.

    However:

    Finder can locate the file immediately.

    Spotlight also finds the file without any issues.

    What We Have Tried

    We found a script that can be run from within InDesign. When the script performs a search of the same SMB share, it successfully finds the missing files.

    This suggests that InDesign itself can access the share, but the built-in Relink search is behaving differently from the script.

    Has anyone encountered this behaviour before?

    We're looking for a solution that would allow InDesign's relink process to locate files on an SMB share. Possible solutions could include:

    A preference or macOS setting we've overlooked.

    An enhanced version of the script that could automate the relinking process after locating the files.

    A third-party plug-in or utility that improves the Relink workflow with network shares.

    All suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    InDesign becomes unresponsive when working with images – cursor disappears, text disappears, application cannot be closed
    I am experiencing serious stability problems with Adobe InDesign on Windows 11.
    I previously reported a text display problem where text would randomly disappear from a text frame while still being present in the Story Editor. That problem has also occurred in the current version.
    However, I have now noticed a second, very serious problem:
    As long as I work only with text, InDesign works normally. As soon as I start working with images, the problems begin.
    For example, when I place an image:
    • underneath a text frame,
    • next to a text frame,
    • or anywhere on the page,
    the normal mouse cursor disappears and is replaced by a spinning circle/loading cursor.
    I can still perform some operations, but the program becomes extremely slow and unstable. When I then try to return to editing text, the text disappears from the text frame again. It becomes visible only after clicking in the text frame twice.
    The most serious problem is that InDesign eventually cannot be closed normally at all. Choosing Exit/Close does not close the application. The program remains unresponsive, and the only way to shut it down is to force the computer to restart/shut down.
    This makes normal professional work in InDesign extremely difficult and unreliable, especially when creating magazine layouts where text and images are constantly being edited together.
    System information
    • Windows 11
    • Adobe InDesign 2026, version 21.4.1
    • Hungarian user interface
    • The problem occurs with text created directly in InDesign as well as text pasted from Word.
    • I have already completely uninstalled and reinstalled InDesign.
    • GPU Performance is disabled.
    • The problem is not limited to a particular font; it also occurred with Arial and Minion Pro.
    • The problem is intermittent when working with text alone, but the severe cursor/freezing problems consistently begin after I start working with images.
    I would be very grateful if this could be investigated by the InDesign engineering team. I can provide a video demonstrating the problem if required.
    This is not simply a text-editing or workflow issue. The application becomes unstable when images are introduced into the document, eventually becoming impossible to close normally.
    Please let me know if you need any additional diagnostic information or a screen recording.
    Additional clarification: The text-disappearing problem I reported previously eventually resolved itself, and InDesign worked normally for a period of time. The problems described in this new report appeared only later, after this period of stable operation, and are specifically triggered when I start working with images.

17. InDesign paragraph borders and rules fail PDF/UA-1 accessibility (Unmarked Content Error)

    Hello,

    I would like to report a persistent PDF/UA compliance bug regarding Paragraph Borders and Paragraph Rules exported from InDesign 21.4.1.

    [Description of the issue]
    When using the built-in "Paragraph Borders" or "Paragraph Rules" features within Paragraph Styles, InDesign fails to correctly tag or artifact the generated vector lines upon PDF export, even when the export tagging for the style is forced to a specific tag (like H2 or P) and "Create Tagged PDF" is checked.

    As a result, tools like Adobe Acrobat Preflight (PDF/UA-1 validation profile) and axesCheck return a critical compliance error: "Content neither marked as artifact nor nested within a structural element" (Unmarked Content). The vector line is exported as an independent, untagged graphical object adjacent to the text container inside the tag.

    [Steps to reproduce]
    1. Create a Paragraph Style for a heading (e.g., H2).
    2. Enable "Paragraph Border" or "Paragraph Rule" inside this style.
    3. In Export Tagging, force the PDF Tag to "H2".
    4. Export the document as an Interactive or Print PDF with "Create Tagged PDF" enabled.
    5. Run a PDF/UA-1 Preflight check in Adobe Acrobat Pro or axesCheck.

    [Expected result]
    The paragraph border/rule should be automatically integrated as an attribute of the text container or automatically nested as an <Artifact> layout element.

    [Actual result]
    The file fails PDF/UA-1 validation due to untagged content. The user has to manually use the Reading Order tool in Acrobat Pro to mark each border/rule as an artifact, which is extremely time-consuming for long documents.

18. CC Libraries thumbnail transparency

    In InDesign 2026, CC Libraries does not correctly preview transparent white vector assets. “Show Transparency Grid” only displays the transparency grid outside the asset’s bounding box. The area inside the bounding box remains white, making white logos and icons invisible. For example, a round white logo is shown as a blank white square. The asset is transparent when placed in the document, so the issue affects the CC Libraries thumbnail only. Local InDesign Libraries show the object contours in the layer color, but CC Libraries offer no comparable visibility option.

    Would prefer either:
    - A transparent box with white preview only of the asset.
    - A contour of the asset in the layer colour (like in local libraries, so you can see the outline of the asset).

    In attachment, icon is added into the library in white (wit) and black (zwart).
    Black one is visible, white one is not.

19. can't convert PDF files

    Indesign is currently failing to open PDF and Illustrator files. The Covert dialogue pops up and takes a very long time to process before returning a failure message. Error says "some features in the PDF" are to blame, but it's happening with even previously good files and .ai files as well.

    Issue initially presented on latest version (24.1.1); tried reinstalling, then tried uninstalling that and dialing back to version 21.0.2. Same issue every time, even on files I worked on previously with no issue. Have rebooted my system multiple times, no change. Sample PDF attached.

    Windows 11 enterprise x64
    AMD Ryzen 7 7700 8-Core Processor (3.80 GHz)
    RAM 32.0 GB (31.1 GB usable)

20. Color Issue on Appearance Panel

    When trying to change the color on the appearance panel, there is an audible sound on my MacBook, like I can't select it.
    I have an example, a regular rectangle, I tried to change the color under the appearance panel and it makes that sound and it won't let me change the color. Ive deleted and reinstalled inDesign, cleared settings, restarted the computer, and the issue persists. I've also opened different files, and new files for testing it and it still does the same thing. I'm on the lates version 21.4.1, not on a beta of macOS either.
