Indic Unicode font rendering is broken in InDesign
When writing text in certain Indic scripts, InDesign does not render the font correctly. For example, using the Padauk font for the Myanmar script, the following string renders the Medial Ra (U+103C) around the consonant Na (U+1014) instead of the consonant Ma (U+1019).

Abbreviations & Acronyms PDF accessibility
There is currently no way tag either abbreviations or acronyms in InDesign.
Having spent an entire day entering expansion text for the phrase "Title IX" in Acrobat because I couldn't properly prep the document in InDesign, I'm now dreading and future revisions.
Please beef up the accessibility options in InDesign, including the ability to tag both abbreviations and acronyms.

Combine more than one paragraph style for a single TOC entry
Major navigation points sometimes have headers that are split across multiple paragraph styles, not just one. This makes it impossible to correctly generate the TOC styles, since you can only select a single paragraph style per TOC/NCX entry. It would be helpful if multiple paragraph styles could have their text combined into one entry, so that they create a single navigation link in the epub. For example, "Chapter" and "One" may have two different paragraph styles, but you would want 1 NCX entry, with "Chapter One" as the text.

Table of contents update only page numbers
Like in MsWord, it would be a nice feature to update the table of contents and update only the numbers, or update text and numbers together. Sometimes people change long words in a table of content just to fit a header into one line of text. Or they add a few words behind the header just to make the table of content easier to understand. When updating the table of content then it would be nice if you could choose to update only the numbers.

You can easily change text cases with just a few clicks, ensuring consistency across your designs. This feature streamlines text editing, saving you time and effort. Enhance your workflow by adjusting text case quickly from the Text or GREP tabs of the Find/Change panel. The feature is now available in the latest InDesign 2024(v19.5.0.084)

Footnote references in header rows of tables should not be repeated
It is desirable that text in table headers is repeated in the second and subsequent text frames.
But it is not good that footnote references are also repeated in headers. This is because the footnote for the corresponding references is to be found on the page where the reference is first mentioned, but not on the following pages of the table, which breaks across pages.6 votes -
We need text variables whose values can change PER SECTION.
I'm mystified that there's no way to (for example) specify a name for a section in a document. "Section marker" is not a solution, because you frequently need to use that to display a section NUMBER (which should also be a built-in marker).
So I created a text variable called "section name," but found it was useless because there's no way to set a variable's value per section. Don't most document sections have names?

Better justification using OpenType Variable Font width axis
Please improve the justification options in InDesign. Variable font width axis could significantly contribute to better text justification – see the attached example.

It would be fantastic to have an AI agent built into InDesign which would check spelling, grammar and fact check text data.

i use InCopy as a notes app since 2015. the file i write on is now almost 5 mb big. and i noticed that over the years it takes longer and longer for incopy to open my document. and it is because of "Autoflowing Text" i do not even know what it is and i can't even google it. But it takes so long. what i have been doing over the years is that i just wait for it to finish. But now i am trying to find a setting in preferences to turn it off whatever it is…

Tabs whose location is set from the right instead of from the left (not just the right-aligned tab!)
Recently setting a series of tables of financial data, I noticed that, if the column width varied, I had to set individual decimal-aligned tabs for each column to ensure that the numbers ended up a similar distance from the right edge of the column. (In other words, so that the numbers in the narrow columns aligned correctly on the decimal without having the numbers in the wide columns appear too far to the left.)
Would it be possible to create a set of tab stops whose positions are calculated from the right-hand edge rather than the left?…

Running Headers to pull from previous page
Add the ability for a paragraph/character style to pull from previous page. Currently only given first on page and last on page. Need more options. example: chapter 1title is on page 1 and text crosses onto page 2. At the end of page 2 is the next chapter title, but need to be able to put the previous chapter header on page 2 as a running header.

Add New Stand-Alone Styles for Tracking Changes in Layout View
There are times when I need two lines of text to stay in a frame/page. I can do this manually, but I get overrides. I could accomplish this using paragraph styles, but globally it would impact other frame layouts; or result in many more paragraph styles (I already have over 40 for long documents). I could do it using character styles, which I do, but then I lose other necessary character styles like italics applied to a book title.
If we could have a separate Style for 'tracking', kerning, character spacing, character width, etc. it would. be so helpful.

When you issue a new version of ANY Adobe package keep the help text in synch
It is a poor indicator of an organisations ability to manager Quality Control in it's software when it allows the hep text to fall behind the release cycle. Using the most recent version of CC Indesign, the Help text suggests that I am able to add a new page by using the pages panel. It further goes in to say that if it is NOT visible it will be in the Window menu. When I check the menu there is no such facility.

Hyperlink in Data Merge
Please, please, please add the hyperlink data field when using Data Merge. Why can we generate a QR code, but not add a simple URL to a box or a text or whatever you want, visibile in an interactive PDF? Please add this function, doing press releases is transforming me into a monkey!

Allow default stroke alignment to be "Inside" even if default stroke is zero
I want to set the default stroke weight to Zero and the alignment to Inside. You can't do this. If you set default weight to Zero the default alignment setting is grayed out. So every time I have to add a stroke to a box I have to change the stroke alignment or it increases the size of the box. (If the default stroke weight is anything other than zero you CAN set the default alignment. Setting the alignment and then changing the stroke back to zero doesn't work. The default of Center returns.)

Allow multiple character styles to be applied to characters
Allow multiple character styles to be applied to one character.
There should be an »appearance« panel as in Illustrator, which reflects the hierarchy of multiple applied character styles to one character/a text. This would ease the work with XML and reduce the number of character styles needed. Nowadays you have to trick with GREP styles etc. to apply multiple character styles to one character.
With such a feature, I could define »italic« and »bold« and has no need to define »bold italic«. This will even end up in better HTML export: instead of <span class="BoldItalic">blabl</span> there could be the…478 votesThanks for the suggestion. We have started to explore this feature. Will share more details soon
