Add Layer Name to the options under Type/Text Variable/Insert Variable
We create a base version and save that as the file name, which we can add to our slug line as Inserted Text, then we have multiple versions which we have to manually add to the slug line before we release proofs to the client. Having the layer inserted into the slug line would be a great improvement to time/accuracy .

InDesign Review Panel should NOT switch the filter to 'Resolved' when editing text with older resolved comments
I am often working on documents with multiple review sessions. The problem that occurs since the latest updates of InDesign is that as soon as I put the cursor in a piece of text which previously had a comment attached to it which is resolved, all resolved comments pop up in the comments panel and I cannot see the current comments: all comments are immediately filtered to 'resolved'. Of course I can switch off the filter for resolved comments again, but it switches back again to 'resolved comments' as soon as I start working on the text. This is…

convert metadata description to alt text
It would be so helpful if there was an option for image metadata like "description" or "keywords" could be imported as the alt text. Right now we need to go click on every picture to type it in for every document that image is used in and it is time consuming. If I could just add a description in the image in bridge/photoshop and then have that imported as alt text, it would save so much time trying to reprocess all our documents to be accessible.

Snap to Glyph option like the one that exists in Illustrator
Not much to elaborate on, but I'd love to see this option available in InDesign as I frequently find it useful in Illustrator. When trying to align objects to the center of the text, as opposed to the text box (because the text box is taller than the text), this would be amazing.
Alternatively - a way to double click on the top-most midpoint of the text box and have it autosnap to the glyph height. This is virtually identical to the feature that already exists within InDesign.

PDF Comments: Apply comments, of type Strikethrough text, that has a text comment attached, with same behaviour as comments of type Replace
When making comments in Acrobat Reader, clients often use the Strikethrough-type and add a text comment, when they really should have used the Replace-type comment.
Strikethrough-comments with text, could be applied with the same behavior as Replace-comments.

Preflight: option to check document text only (not in linked graphics)
Hi, I would appreciate to be able to determine whether or not the Preflight profile marks errors found in linked graphic files, rather than in the document itself. (For example, when a linked graphics file uses fonts that are flagged as 'not allowed', it might still be reproduced well while the same error is likely to be important when it occurs in a text included in the .INDD file itself.).
I'm mainly thinking of text-related errors like invalid or missing fonts. For controlling this, the current TEXT options could just be duplicated into "Document Text" and "Text…1 vote -
Imported text linked to a document (like Word) where changes can be made and then automatically updated in indesign document
When importing text, we brake the link with the original textual content. I wish we could have the option to keep the imported text linked to its original document so that we can design while some of the content is being modified in a word processor and then updated like any other kind of link and without losing the applied styles.

Highlight text in preview only
InDesign is often used for templates. It would be really cool if we could highlight text so that it's ONLY highlight in preview mode (W) and the highlight doesn't show in print, PDF etc. That way we can highlight the areas to change each time we edit a template but the highlight doesn't get printed.

Copy CMYK, RGB values in Color Picker as text
I would like to be able to copy RGB or CMYK values as text so I can paste them elsewhere. This would be helpful in my daily work where I make color palettes and then describe them with text in a brand guide.

Auto recognize type on path with overset text
When using 'type on path' with multiple paths and you have overset text on one path. When clicking on the red plus so you copied the overset text to past it on the next path but it's not possible because InDesign doesn't automatically apply/recognize 'type on path' like in Illustrator.
Attached an screenshot what I mean.

Allow GREP functions embedded in Paragraph Styles to 'soft' replace text
GREP functions in paragraph styles are powerful and let you find and style text automatically - but they don't let you stylistically 'replace' it. It would be very helpful for example to replace 'and' in Title Style to '&' or to add custom dingbats and company logos in place of 'company name'.

Put the Overset text warning directly at the beginning of the export file process
When I want to export a PDF, InDesign kindly reminds me of overset text or missing links. However, I do not understand why this warning appears at the very end, after I have gone through the file location selection and PDF export settings. Obviously, I want to correct this error in 95% of cases. Instead, I have to cancel the export, then go through the entire process again. The file location, file name, and any PDF export settings I might have changed are lost, and I have to start all over again.

Easy Paste/Replace images
Normal behavior of clipboard handling (Copy/Cut & Paste), is that the content of the clipboard replaces the selected items. E.g: Copy a piece of text (to the clipboard), select another piece of text, choose Paste, and the selection is replaced by the contents of the clipboard.
But, unfortunately, InDesign breaks this rule, when trying to replace the content of an image frame.
It is not able to Copy the content of a frame, and replace the content of an other frame. We first have to remove the old content, and then choose 'Paste Into'. Why not…1 vote -
Pattern support
I am surprised pattern support has not arrived for InDesign yet. I would like to be able to pick a repeating pattern or drop a png of a pattern in and select to repeat it vertically and/or horizontally within a frame.

Notes for images/picture-frames (InCopy)
It's possible to select some text to attach a note, but it's not possible to select images to attach notes (for example the editor like to have the image brighter and like to communicate this to the designer)

Text/Object Effects Preference Settings
I cannot find an option to do this, and Googling it results in no results.
I often find myself using the Effects options, especially Drop Shadow, on my text and arrows when creating user guides. I like to use very specific settings when doing so, and I like it to be consistent across the entirety of my manuals. However, I have to manually enter these settings in when creating new text boxes or objects, and I cannot find a way to make it so that my desired settings are saved for later use. It would be very useful and time…

Hanging Punctuation needs to include more characters and be customizable #Optical Margin Alignment
Many people need more characters to hang when Optical Margin Alignment is turned on than what is provided by default. This panel should have settings to customize from the default. The workaround to add a space before the character you want to hang and then adding a huge amount of negative kerning, works, but seriously that's all we've got? That is not a real solution, nor is it efficient for multiple instances in multiple documents worked on by multiple people every week. The time used fussing with this alignment must add up to dozens of hours per month,…

Stop exporting <Sect> tags
Please make InDesign stop exporting <Sect> tags for every text frame. We don't need these tags, and they interfere with accessibility.
We need more control over how our content exports to the tag tree. We only need to see our content under the articles <Art> tag.
We have to remove every single <Sect> tag to make our PDFs truly accessible.
