  1. Add a “floating” option to anchor frames

It would be wonderful if InDesign could have a “floating” option for anchored frames the way that FrameMaker does: it allows one to define that, for example, an anchored frame would always be in the upper right corner of the page where the text flows that contains the anchor.
As it is now, if text is added above, the anchored frame moves down with the text, and if it hits the bottom margin, then text wraps to the next page without filling the previous page.

  2. Paste where mouse is pointing

When not using paste-in-place, the item in the clipboard should paste where your mouse is currently sitting on the screen.

The would save a lot of time when you don't need an item pasted in the same spot but rather in a certain area.

  3. Include search for cross references pointing to other documents in Preflight

Until now, cross refs to other documents can kill Indesign in case that other document has been renamed, moved or deleted. ID would then, like, forever try to find that document, slowing itself down to the unability to work with it.
That's why such cross refs should not exist, but they occur when copying text from one document to another. In order to find these cross refs, the only way is to hover with the mouse over the cross refs listing in the cross ref panel. That's annoying. Please include searching for such cross refs to Preflight.

  5. Need the ability to assign fonts to Interactive Text Boxes

Please, please, PLEASE update the Interactive Buttons and Forms functionality to include the ability to assign fonts to the Interactive Text Boxes.

Currently, I have to hope that the design I have made is 100% final approved before I can create the final Interactive PDF and spend additional time fine-tuning the fonts and paragraph alignment. If there are any changes after that, I have to go through the entire process again, losing valuable hours, depending on the length of the document. The ability to change only the font size is useless.

But if the functionality was included in the InDesign…

  6. Paragraph style doesn't save for captions

Saving paragraph styles for generating captions. I open many documents a day and would like to save the Paragraph Style. I make my changes and save it. I open another file and have to start over. No preset available. Maybe I'm missing something?

  8. Wait until I've pressed OK in Step and Repeat before popping up the "Out of Bounds" warning

When using step and repeat, the first thing you enter is the Count. But the distance values are from the last transformation, so sometimes the value there and the Count you enter trigger the "out of bounds" warning when you press tab to exit the "Count" field and move on to the distances. Yes yes, I know, but I haven't had a chance to fill out the new distance yet.

So I then have to tab over to the distances, adjust those, and shift+tab back to the count. Why must I get a popup stopping me when I haven't actually…

  9. Turn paths into guides with the right click menu "Make guides" like in Illustrator.

Pretty self explanatory. It's very useful for example if you need a marquee or an odd shape to serve you as a guide and most importantly, the snapping in InDesign between a line and a guide is so different and so hard to snap to a path.

  10. Add Text Macros like in InCopy

I create a lot of documents that have textual elements that are repetitive, like resumes that include a project description. When using MS Word, I use the Quick Parts functionality to capture that text and insert it whenever I need it.

My company is just beginning to explore the InDesign/InCopy workflow, and I saw that InCopy has a feature much like Quick Parts, called Text Macros. I could really use this if it was implemented in InDesign as well. I have used Autocorrect for similar functionality, but I have never tried it with more than a few words at a…

  11. Adding a dedicated Opentype window to InDesign, as is available in Illustrator (Alt + Shift + Ctrl/Cmd + T)

I think it would be extremely helpful to add a dedicated Opentype window to InDesign, as is available in Illustrator.

Changing more than one setting for a typeface - for example, removing ligatures and then enabling tabular lining - requires more than one navigation through the sub-menu within Character/Paragraph.

It seems strange that this is not a standard window in InDesign when it is in Illustrator, being that InDesign is the standard application for creating text-heavy page layouts.

  12. Take into account alternate layouts when generating / updating tables of contents

Create a (say) 20-page A4 document with a table of contents (sections, subsections and whatever).
Then create an alternate layout of this document, for an A5 paper size. This should make the A5 version about 40 pages long.

We can create and update the table of contents for the A4 layout, but we cannot specify a 2nd ToC for the A5 layout, that takes into account the page numbers, as they are adjusted in the alternate layout(s). If we link the A4 ToC to the A5 layout, its contents will display the pagination of the A4 version.

    In my current…

  14. Apply Multiple Master Pages per Page (Akin to Layers)

Ideally, InDesign would treat master pages like layers. In this manner, a variable number of master pages could be applied to any page, allowing for more efficient and quicker customization of page layout. For example, a user might set up the following master pages:

    A-Body (1 Col.)
    B-Body (2 Col.)
    C-Body (Fig. or Table)
    D-Header (Full)
    E-Header (Partial)
    F-Footer (Full)
    G-Footer (Partial)

In this example, the many possible combinations, such as AD, AF, ADF, AE, AG, AEG, BD, etc. (based on layout needs) wouldn't need to be created. More importantly, as in styles based on parent styles, changes would effectively…

  15. Place Photoshop artboards into InDesign

We need to be able to place Photoshop artboards into InDesign.

This should work similar to placing Illustrator artboards or placing pages from a PDF or another InDesign file.

    Thanks.

    In Backlog  ·  Anonymous responded

Thanks for the info. This is indeed correct that since the various artboards come in as a layers the dimensions are of the entire document which can be problematic. Adding this to our backlog.

  17. Managing Multiple Sets of Endnotes In a Document AND allowing Endnotes to refer to a separate INDD Document

    Issue #1:
Here's my first dilemma: I am building a book with several hundred pages. This book will be printed (won't be an eBook/iBook). I'm keeping each chapter as its own document that I will then collect together as a larger Book at the end. The last chapter will be just for all the book's endnotes. In previous versions of InDesign, I would import the Word document, delete the endnotes out of the "Chapter x" document, and pop them back into the "Endnotes chapter" without affecting the superscripts referencing the endnotes throughout the text. Easy. Now, in cc 2018 if…

  18. Find/Change options for variables

Currently, you can only search for all variables used. But that's it. There is no way to search for the contents of variables or find a specific variable used.

  19. Save INDD file in previous version INDD (e.g. CC 2019 can save in CC 2018)

It would be great if InDesign can save INDD file in previous version INDD (e.g. CC 2019 can save in CC 2018). Yes, I know about IDML but it's not exactly what I need.

  20. Adobe Photoshop or other programs Charts and Infographics

How to easily update creative charts and infographic values made in Adobe Photoshop CS5 or other programs versions. How can all graphical parameters be easily updated, depending on each other? Is there a very practical way to do this?

    Thanks
