  1. Please bring back Mini Bridge

Mini Bridge was an awesome feature that I, as a graphic designer, miss greatly. It made laying out books that were hundreds of pages long with tons of pictures so much easier!! Please bring it back!

  2. Accessibility—Artifact tables for layout, but keep their content

Sometimes designers use a table for layout purposes, not for a traditional spreadsheet-like matrix data in columns and rows.

Example: A table that creates a complex, multi-celled form. For layout, it's easier to create rows and columns to hold the form labels and form control fields.

However, when the form is exported to PDF, the table structure itself is not needed and often gets in the way of many assistive technologies.

Need a way to artifact the table structure itself, but retain the content within the table as live text and form fields. And of course, have it correctly tagged…

  3. Artifacting Master Page Items—accessibility

Within the past year, Adobe InDesign changed the way it handles items on a master page when the file is exported to accessible PDF.

We used to be able to control each MP item and designate whether it was artifacted or kept live and tagged in the PDF reading orders. BUT, in recent versions of InDesign, EVERYTHING on the MP is automatically artifacted and we have no control over this.

This fowls up workflows where some MP items must be kept live, tagged, and in the PDF's reading order, such as the project I'm working (series of fact sheets for…

  5. Animated InDesign icon in Apple Doc

When I print documents on a laser printer using the menu item "Print", the InDesign program icon in the Apple Doc is animated. You can see exactly what the progress is with an animated bar. It would be great if this animated progress bar could also be seen when exporting to PDF. Also as the sum of all background processes. THANK YOU!

  6. Galley view in InDesign

It would be great to have galley view in InDesign, like the one already available in InCopy. This provides a way to work with the many features of the story editor while seeing line breaks within the text as they appear in the layout.

  7. Enable Find (from Find & Change) in checked in content (Incopy workflow)

Currently the Find feature does not work on content which is checked in in an Incopy workflow. It seems like an unnecessary technical restriction which hopefully could easily be changed. E.g. when you'd be on the phone with copywriter while that person is working on the content and you need to quickly find certain sections. Or you need to place an image next to a certain passage.

(I understand it can be activated by checking out all stories, but there are scenarios when this would be unpractical.)

I reckon it should be technically not challenging to implement, while logic to…

  8. grep queries on server

being able to store queries on the server, so that the whole team has the same queries (esp. greps). Maybe 2 options, a userbased and a "application" based solution, just like the scripts?

  9. User Dictionary specifications for some languages

Unlike English, where the declension of nouns in cases is made using prepositions, there are many languages in which the declension is made according to other rules, for example, by changing part of the word itself.

For these languages, we add the same word to the dictionary dozens of times, but many words are built and changed according to the same rules. (Russian, Ukrainian, Byelorussian and many Eastern-European languages).

Here is an example (not complete) for two Ukrainian words ("dissertation" and "compilation").

  10. Possibility of defining several alternative Font Styles in one Character Style

Possibility of defining several alternative Font Styles in one Character Style.

    E.g. Character Style: Italic
Font Style: Regular Italic OR RegularItalic OR Italic OR ItalicRegular OR Italic Regular

Currently working with two families of fonts, one of which has italic defined as Italic and the other as Regular Italic, this is impossible. You have to define two character styles and search the whole text.

  12. Assign paragraph style depending on odd/even page

It would be nice to assign a paragraph style automatically depending on the “value” of a odd or even page? So you can for example make some styles have more margin at the right or left side, depending on odd or even.

Of course you can apply this with different paragraph style, but when a new page appears in the middle of a large document it would be very nice if this can go automatically.

  13. Add ability to add multiple header rows to tables

I would like to be able to add multiple header rows (or something along those lines) to tables so that a table style would be reapplied from that row onward. This would allow alternating fills to always begin on the same color after a header. This feature would be especially handy when adding a row to an existing table as only the fills under the current section of the table you're working on would change. Additionally this table would then be one single table instead of multiple linked tables, allowing changes to any formatting such as column width to be…

  14. Hyphenation of compound words must take precedence over hyphenation

Currently, in Indesign in german language "st" is always hyphenated. In my work, however, there are many compound words in which the "st" is at the beginning or end of the word and therefore the hyphenation of a compounded word must occur before or after the "st" instead of between "s" and "t".

    Example:
"Führerstand", compunded of the words "Führer" and "Stand"

    Expected hyphenation:
    Führer-stand

    Wrong InDesign hyphenation:
    Führers-tand

  15. Please add the possibility of using conditional text to the Table of Contents.

Sometimes we need to shorten the title, or generate a list of abbreviations, a table of contents for each section, or any other list that could use the Conditional Text.

Conditional Texts can be created independently of Character Styles.

    This should work.

What do you think about it?

  16. Please make the text size in panels bigger.

It is hard to read the headings and the small instructions in the panels. It would be great if you as a user could adjust the size. not only the size of panels (when you drag to make it bigger) but also of the tect inside of the panels.

If this alternative already excist please give me a hint.

  17. Make smart guides work on the pasteboard

Smart guides are a really helpful feature but they currently do not work on the pasteboard area of a document. I frequently use the pasteboard to create design elements which I then move onto the page. This would be so much easier if we had the same guides functionality across the workspace. There doesn't seem to be any logical reason for smart guides to stop working once you move to the pasteboard.

Export to ePub presets, like there are for print and PDF. Kind of a "best practices" export reset that could be customized for periodical projects.

  19. Batch "enable profiles for all linked images" option

There should be an easy way to batch "enable all ICC profiles" for linked images in an opened document.
Today, the only way to do this is by changing each image individually. Alternatively, you can force an ICC profile mismatch before opening the file, and then enable all profiles while assingning the correct ICC, which it can lead to errors.

For those whose workflow is based on PDF/X-4, it is crutial to activate the ICC profiles for all the linked images in every InDesign document.
And since the default behavior for InDesign is to ignore the ICC profile while placing…

  20. Text Variables in Floating Window/Pod

Text Variables needs a dockable window/panel/pod. Pull defining new variables out of the Text menu and put it in a panel that we can access without having to drill down through the UI.

Having Text Variables available in a panel in this fashion would let us place the cursor, double-click to add a variable, move the cursor via arrows and double-click the next variable. We would also be able to click several variable in a row without having the laboriously drill down through the UI to get to the list. This is very frustrating when you have several dozen variables…
