Linking to Excel files
It would be nice if one could link to an Excel file during placement rather than having to change the preferences on and off.
Also, it would be nice if InDesign remembered how many rows were marked as header rows when updating linked files.

Kerning Issues Between Text and Tabs
A detail about kerning/tracking that seems to have slipped through the cracks: how text and tabs interact with each other in Indesign.
I noticed this while doing fillable forms with underscores. The space after the type wildly varies in distance, and from what I can tell, there is no way to automatically or manually adjust it. I tried switching kerning between manual and optical, with no results. I tried manually adjusting the kerning, which doesn't affect it either. The spacing seems to be related to the length of the text.

Countdown page numbering
I needed to start a book with the highest number to the lower, but it's not possible to start a page from 200 until 1 instead of 1 to 200.
Could a nice function also for double language book with right reading languages and left reading languages.3 votes -
Form Field Export Tags
Form fields tags aren't exporting properly for tagged pdfs in the newest Indesign (13.0.1). The tags won't show up in the file therefore not allowing the pdfs to pass the accessibility checker. The only work around I'm finding is to re-install the 2017 CC, save the files out as an idml and reopen and export from there. There are no issues when exporting as tagged pdf from the 2017 CC.

For documents that are "name-heavy", it would be great to be able to have the option within spellcheck to skip a page or skip a text box!

End-notes and Footnotes URLS
I do a lot of books for Print and digital (pdf and ePub). End-notes have always been a problem, even now that Indesign supports End-notes.
For PDF and ePub export , in order to have the end-note reference clickable to redirect the user to it's corresponding end-note, then a link back again, I have to do this manually.
This is a massive manual process...
Let's say I have 100 end-notes. With each end-note reference, I have to place a new 'Hyperlink Destination' (for the return link)... That's going through the document, and placing 100 hyperlink destinations.
Then, I go to…

Make embedded audio InDesign's EPUB3 files fully compatible with Google Play Books platform
Embedded audio in EPUB3 documents created with InDesign is not recognised when the EPUB3 document is published via the Google Play Books platform. This is due to incompatible ID tags. InDesign exports this:
<audio id="idAudio001"
but Google Play Books requires:
IDs must start with a letter ([A-Z,a-z]) and may be followed by any number of letters, digits ([0-9]), hyphens ("-"), underscores (""), colons (":"), and periods (".")Currently this makes it impossible to use InDesign to create an EPUB3 with embedded audio and publish it correctly via the Google Play Books platform.

improving master page functionality
It would be super helpful if i could create a master page with regions of text and then apply that to pages. Then, those regions could be edited in the page with the correct information, but if i needed to edit the placement of the stuff, i could change it in the master and it would sync to the page.

Tailoring Fonts for Languages within Multilingual Documents
Sometimes large documents that have been translated into other languages will still have English written in them (company names, brand names, stuff that original creator wants to remain in English). Many times the English text will use a specific font, but that font does not support other alphabets/characters that appear in other languages, so the unsupported text comes up as red boxes.
There is no feature in InDesign that allows you to correctly identify the foreign language (all the red boxes) and lets you pick a different font WITHOUT changing the font for English. The only way to do this…

Keeping the format when updating the spreadsheet link indesign data merge
After creating a linked data merge file, you can then go in and edit certain field. But, if the excel sheet needs updating, you then have to 'data merge' again and lose all formatted text/images etc. There are third party apps, like WordsFlow, but this is expensive. Please have this feature in InDesign! Thankings.

PDF export profiles shall store all settings
Until now, coming from CS2, Indesign was not able to store the security settings in a PDF export profile. Every time when exporting a PDF I have to set these settings manually, plus the password. I know I could do that in Acrobat with an action, but that's only worth doing when exporting more than two files at once. The same PDF profiles could also be used by Distiller when converting EPS to PDF by drag 'n drop, so the target PDF would always be password protected. I call this automation.

Please expose a PDF's page count to scripting
To place a PDF in InDesign, you have to know the PDF's page count. The main point of the PlaceMultiPagePDF script is to show how you can place a PDF without knowing its page count, but it's slow business and get very tedious when you want to place part-ranges that include an open-ended range, such as 10-20, 30-
There is a hack, but it's ugly and unreliable.

Automatically group objects when pasting them into an image frame
At the moment InDesign does not let you paste several selected objects (that are not grouped) into an image frame. The user has to group the selection before pasting it with CMD+OPT+V into the image frame.
Please let InDesign automatically group the object when pasting or make it possible to paste ungrouped objects.
Thanks

Make editing of hidden Conditional Texts easier
When working on texts with hidden conditional texts in it, I frequently have to do corrections inside the hidden texts either. It would be great, if hidden conditional text would be visible and editable e.g. in the story editor, without changing the visibility in the conditional text panel.
Or make it expandable in the story editor by clicking on the eye symbol ...

full folder information when opening an existing InDesign file
When I try to open an existing InDesign document from inside the InDesign program I don't get the full range of folders (1). This does not change when going to an upper level and into the detail again despite there is an original InDesign file in one of the hidden folders. I have to go to Windows explorer (2 and 3) to start the file.

Please implement support for fast entry of Mac OS accented chars asap
Mac OSX now supports accents very cleanly and simply c/o press and hold briefly (a, e whatever) then your accent choices display as in the attached screengrab. This feature is supported in all Mac apps, email clients, etc etc ... even dare I type, MS Word v15.40 (171108). But not InDesign (yet ... as of 13.0.1). Very disappointing for a s/w vendor that is otherwise at leading edge of all things creative design / innovative UIs ...

Style group support via xml import
So far as I know, InDesign does not support style groups via xml import.
Why is this usefull?
If styles in a InDesign template organized into groups, we cannot refer with the attribute aid:pstyle and aid:cstyle to these styles and automatically apply these during xml import.23 votes -
Styles UI needs to keep up with the times
Styles are implemented in InDesign since... well, for ever. The options and settings grew a lot over the years BUT it still looks and feels the same. Old and unflexible. There is a styles window with your collected styles and to edit those you have your Style Options window. Basically that´s it.
Practically that means you have to open each style individually, make your changes individually (although you want equally changes), check if design and layout still works, edit each style... again... individually.
Please find a way to improve working/handling styles e.g. for collective changes or simultaneously opening multiple Style…

Better offline interactive products.
More and more product needs to be interactive.
Indesign allows us to make beautiful interactive pdf's. But there's a problem, the i-pdf doesn't work on all pdf-viewers and pre-viewers. Only adobe-reader or opening in the browser, but not directly from for example Gmail. Also some functions in indesign could work much better, for example the button; it work perfectly as an roll-over, but not as a click-go-to-pageX. Those functions should be usable together.
Can we make an i-pdf feel like/work as an offline website? And i would love to see more features/functions!

Cross-reference dialog: sortable picker / resizable window
Every time I place a new cross-ref or edit a broken one, it opens that "Edit cross-ref" window, which is not resizable, where a lot of space is wasted and where the most import part, the list of headlines to pick from, is not the biggest part. Then I would select a paragraph style from that very small list on the left where some style names may even be wider than the list field. And when picking from the list on the right, it is not sorted aphabetically by default. Please put something we can click to sort. Imagine you…
