Option for Overprint to apply to black text only (not graphics) by default
It would be great to have two options in Preferences for how overprint behaves.
Appearance of Black Objects: Overprint Swatch at 100% (tick or untick)
Appearance of Black Text: Overprint Swatch at 100% (tick or untick)I spend a ton of time correcting black on graphics before printing files and it can be quite fiddly at times with illustrations. This would save so much time + printing errors when I miss stuff!

Automated Language detection
Please consider a automatic intelligence, which could automatically detect the languages used in a document.
In nearly all texts I’m typesetting for journals and specialized books, there are parts of foreign languages inside the text (quotes, citations, ...). It would be genious, if InDesign could automatically search, find, and mark those bits of foreign languages, and change the language mode for those bits, so that the correct hyphenation will be applied.
In combination with the ability to unlimit the number of character styles, that can be applied to character or text, that would be a very powerful feature.

Find/Change: search multiple formats, NOT & OR options, multiple changes, drop-downs
I work with books, some of them very long and complex. Because I'm strict about styles and consistency, and because the authors rarely are, I have to use Find/Change a lot. It is by far the part of InDesign that I find most lacking.
Instead of clicking to get to find format or change format options, pick from drop-down(s) right there on the F/C dialog. At least for styles (but ideally also for fonts, swatches, etc.).
Search multiple styles at once (but not all styles, as happens when you don't select one in the find format area). For example: find…

Rework overhead size to reduce pdf file size
Please fix the pdf file sizes created from overhead. For example, I think, this is created when a document has many tables (and cells) in it. I can create a text file, with zero pictures, no pixels, just vectors (the text), and the pdf proof (lowrez) size is huge! It should be about 800k, but it's at almost 10 megabytes! The only way around this is opening the pdf in acrobat and optimizing it to reduce it to the expected 800k size, which, sometimes, leads to text disapearing, but that's another issue.

CC Library Keyboard Shortcuts, or TextExpander feature
CC Libraries exist to make it fast to add pre-built content to an INDD. Text does not have a quick way of placing inline - you must right click and click place content. Annoying when doing hundreds of times.
Two solutions:
1. Right clicking on a library element should have "keyboard shortcut" adjacent "rename". When a keyboard shortcut is added, show that shortcut on the right side of the element in the CC Library panel.
2. Add 'text expander' feature. Right click on a text library element and have option for 'expand text on...' where a unique phrase can…5 votes -

External link to a specific point of a Publish Online document
Can we get a way to link directly to a text anchor, hyperlink destination, page # etc from an external source?
For example: I'd like to publish product documentation using Publish Online, and it would be nice to be able to link to a page or text anchor from a help document that would take someone to a specific point (i.e. a connection diagram).

Ratios of Height to Width
I would like to see ratios of height to width in InDesign similar to Photoshop. In PS, when using the selection marquee or crop tool, you can set the tool to a ratio of height to width. InDesign should have that when making a frame shape and when making a page size. Designing content into frame regions that express a ratio of H x W furthers graceful design.

The KEYBOARD INCREMENTS part of Units and Increments preferences should application level not document level.
I have to go into this panel multiple times a day to change this from 2 to 1.
It should be application level, because it all relates to how much I expect text to move when using keyboard shortcuts. Or at least let me toggle it or override.
I think this is like if my custom keyboard shortcuts were document level and I had to set them back up every time I got a file made by someone else.25 votes -
Multiple find an replace
How if you make 10 or 15 replacements at once? With replacing options each, or global replacing options, as a suggestion, the dialog is two columns, the left column contains the find text boxes, and the right column contains the replace text boxes. This will be GREAT and SAVES much time. Thanks Adobe Brains!

Re-separating the tool menu
You combined the tool menu in the right panel, but now I have to scroll down to the align section every time I want to adjust something. In InDesign, I'm mostly creating forms or schedules where I realign things constantly. It was more convenient before. Either put align at the top of the panel, or re-separate the panel. I can't drag align to the top of it either. If I could even just reorganize it, it would be better.

Find/Change Panel -> Dockable ?
I'm struggling with screen estate here (laptop, no other screen) and was wondering about the Find/Change window.
It's floating on top of everything, like a modal window, but you still can interact with everything underneath.
So it is basically acting like a panel.
What I am missing here is an icon + the option to dock it and hide and show when needed.
It is quite a large panel so it very often hides things (results, context) under it.
What about 3 things :
1. "make it a (real) panel", don't change design quick and dirty, but already…185 votes -
Appearance Panel in Properties window
In the properties window, every-time I open the fill in the appearance panel I have to open any swatch folders, it would be good if it remembered which folders were open so I don't have to open each time. Also, would be handy to have the switch from Text to Frame as icons to the left of that panel, then it's just one selection rather than two.

Replace all missing glyphs
Option in the find replace dialogue to replace all missing glyphs, not just swapping one glyph for another. As far as I know, you have to go one by one throughout a document. The find/replace Opentype feature (text tab hasn't worked for me either.)

Do not like the new endnote feature. There needs to be an option to disable it when importing Word documents.
Endnotes needs an option to be disabled when importing long Word documents. Minimally, it needs an option to run-on the endnote text at the end of the document and dissociate the reference marker with the note text so that both can be formatted with the rest of the document.
